Ikoners inverkan på användbarhet och förståelse : Användarbarhetstest för ikonbiblioteket Font Awesome / The usability and understanding of icons : Usability test of the icon library Font Awesome

Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka användbarheten hos ikonbiblioteket Font Awesome samt hur sammanhanget påverkar användares uppfattning av en ikon. Frågeformulär och intervjuer har besvarats av 20 testpersoner för att undersöka hur internetanvändare uppfattar användningen av 35 utvalda ikoner och hur dessa ikoner bör presenteras för att bidra till hög användbarhet på webbplatser och i applikationer. Resultatet från frågeformuläret påvisar att flertalet ikoner kräver tillhörande text eller tydliga sammanhang för att vara användbara. Resultatet från intervjuerna påvisar att sammanhanget där en ikon presenteras har stor betydelse för hur användarna uppfattar ikonens representation. / This research is aimed to investigate the usability of the icon library Font Awesome and how context affects the user’s perception of an icon. Questionnaires and interviews were conducted by 20 respondents in order to examine how users perceive the use of 35 selected icons and how the icons should be presented for achieving good usability on web sites and in applications. The results of the questionnaire indicate that the majority of icons require accompanying text or clear context to demonstrate usability. The results of the interviews demonstrate that the context in which an icon is presented is of great importance for how users perceive the intention behind the application of the icon.

Iphigenia at Aulis: Myth, Performance, and Reception

When Euripides wrote his final play, Iphigenia at Aulis, depicting the human sacrifice of Agamemnon’s first child that allowed the sailing of the Greek expedition against Troy, he was faced with several significant mythographic choices. Of primary concern was the outcome of the sacrifice: there existed a strong tradition in early sources that mitigated the sacrifice by affecting a divine rescue by Artemis, usually with a deer being left in her place on the altar. The extremely troubled textual history of our script – the play was first performed posthumously, and we do not know in what state Euripides left the text – means that we cannot be certain which tradition Euripides actually chose to follow, sacrifice or rescue. Depicting Iphigenia as a willing victim, however, must have been Euripides’ own innovation. This dissertation explores the ramifications of that self-sacrifice and contextualizes this play within a tradition of mythographic evolution and reception. Chapter 1 surveys the history of criticism of the text, itself a mode of reception, and also examines trends in Euripidean criticism in the modern period, limited until recently by the textual issues. Chapter 2 considers instances of the Iphigenia legend before Euripides’ play. The parodos of Agamemnon, the first source to express the sacrifice in terms of human suffering, receives special attention. Chapter 3 seeks to understand audience reception at the moment of first performance through three different critical lenses: thematic (self-sacrifice was a recurring motif in Euripides’ work), socio-political (by considering the recurring Panhellenic sentiment deployed in the play’s rhetoric), and dramaturgical (by treating the spatial dynamics of the performance as a point of intertextual contact). Chapters 4 and 5 examine reception of the sacrifice story in antiquity (in the Hellenistic and Roman periods), a process which reveals much about the position of Greek tragedy in the popular imagination following the fifth century. The final chapter brings to bear considerations of adaptations of the play into new genres and new media since the advent of the printing press, all of which open up new possibilities for the creators of these adaptations and the story they wish to tell.

Analysing the Adoption of awesome South Africa mobile travel application as a marketing strategy

Mobile Marketing is a critical marketing strategy and a foundation of competitive advantage for small to medium enterprises in the tourism and hospitality industry in South Africa. While many studies focus on mobile marketing, this study focuses on the adoption of mobile marketing innovations by small to medium enterprises in the tourism and hospitality industry in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. Analysing the adoption of Awesome South Africa mobile application, as a marketing strategy among SMEs in the Western Cape tourism and hospitality industry was therefore imperative to understand the factors that influence mobile marketing adoption. The objective was to find out the factors that contribute to the adoption of mobile marketing as well as the factors that would impede the adoption of mobile marketing by the SMEs in this industry. The research employed the Technology Acceptance Model as a theoretical framework as well as a guide in ascertaining the factors that affect the adoption of mobile marketing innovations among SMEs. There is certainty that the Awesome South Africa mobile travel application could partly solve the information asymmetry problem as well as the marketing challenges of the SMEs in the Western Cape Tourism and hospitality industry. An exploratory design was deployed in this study, resulting in the application of a qualitative research approach for data collection, analysis and interpretation. Both content and thematic data analyses were used in this study because data was collected from multiple sources that included reports and face-toface interviews. The research findings showed that the TAM provides a reasonable explanation of the factors that influence technology acceptance amongst SMEs. Perceived usefulness, perceived cost, perceived competitive pressure and perceived employee capability emerged as the significant factors that simultaneously influenced mobile marketing adoption among SMEs. Factors impeding the adoption of mobile marketing application by the SMEs included perceived high cost of adoption, lack of managerial support, employee incompetence, limited financial resources and perceived complexity of the mobile marketing innovations. The recommendation was that the Awesome South Africa mobile application innovators should capitalise on the TAM constructs in order to realise the adoption of their mobile application among SMEs in the Western Cape tourism and hospitality industry.

A single-photon source for quantum networking

Cavity quantum electrodynamics (cavity QED) with single atoms and single photons provides a promising route toward scalable quantum information processing (QIP) and computing. A strongly coupled atom-cavity system should act as a universal quantum interface, allowing the generation and storage of quantum information. This thesis describes the realisation of an atom-cavity system used for the production and manipulation of single photons. These photons are shown to exhibit strong sub-Poissonian statistics and indistinguishability, both prerequisites for their use in realistic quantum systems. Further, the ability to control the temporal shape and internal phase of the photons, as they are generated in the cavity, is demonstrated. This high degree of control presents a novel mechanism enabling the creation of arbitrary photonic quantum bits.

Database Auto Awesome: Enhancing Database-Centric Web Applications through Informed Code Generation

Database Auto Awesome is an approach to enhancing web applications comprised of forms used to interact with stored information. It was inspired by Google's Auto Awesome tool, which provides automatic enhancements for photos. Database Auto Awesome aims to automatically or semi-automatically provide improvements to an application by expanding the functionality of the application and improving the existing code. This thesis describes a tool that gathers information from the application and provides details on how the parts of the application work together. This information provides the details necessary to generate new portions of an application. These enhancements are directed by the web application administrator through specifying what they would like to have generated, in terms of functionality. Once the administrator has provided this direction, the new application code is generated and put in updated or new files. Using this approach, Database Auto Awesome provides a viable solution for semi-automatically generating enhancements to an existing web application.

Syftet med denna C-uppsats var att implementera ett visualiseringskoncept för att presentera data i ett tidslinjegränssnitt med hjälp av Font Awesome-ikoner inom A4Cloud-projektet. Den huvudsakliga målgruppen utgör personer som främst arbetar inom A4Cloud-projektet. För att kunna belysa brister i visualiseringskonceptet genomfördes användartester där testpersonerna fick använda sig av det upprättade tidslinjegränssnittet samt en konstruerad plattform för att besvara ikoners betydelse. Både kvalitativa intervjuer samt statistiska framställningar genomfördes under studien. De slutsatser som kan dras från denna studie är att några element var svåruppfattade som interaktiva element och svåra att åtskilja från resten av gränssnittet. Testpersoner, blev under studien, tillfrågade under intervjun om de kunde tänka sig använda tidslinjegränssnittet i sin vardag. Orosfaktorn verkar inte ha spelat någon roll när testpersonerna besvarade tidigare nämnda intervjufråga, utan behovet att vilja ha koll på sina delningar med diverse tjänster verkar vara det som avgör. / A4Cloud
