Matrix-dominated constitutive laws for composite materials

He, Yihong 06 July 2010 (has links)
Accurate three-dimensional stress-strain constitutive properties are essential to understanding complex deformation and failure mechanisms for materials with highly anisotropic mechanical properties. The large number of different methods and specimen types currently required to generate three-dimensional allowables for structural design slow down the material characterization. Also, some of the material constitutive properties are never measured due to prohibitive cost of the specimens needed. A method for measurement of three-dimensional constitutive properties using short-beam specimens subject to three-point bend load has been recently developed. This method is based on the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) full-field deformation measurement and closed-form stress approximation. The purpose of this work is to improve the accuracy of the constitutive properties through accurate stress solution. A method is developed based on a combination of full-field strain measurement and nonlinear finite element stress analysis in the material characterization. The nonlinear shear stress-strain relations are the major concern in this work. An iterative procedure is applied to update the nonlinear shear properties using iterative finite element simulations. The accuracy of the numerical procedure is verified by comparing the finite element strain results with full-field measurements. The procedure is further verified using the V-notched beam test results. Excellent agreement has been achieved in the verification. Simplicity of the short-beam specimens and accuracy of the constitutive property approximations make the present method attractive for measurement of three-dimensional stress-strain relations for anisotropic materials at various load rates.

Rock mass strength and deformability of unweathered closely jointed New Zealand greywacke

Stewart, Scott William January 2007 (has links)
Closely jointed greywacke rock masses are widespread throughout both the North and South Islands of New Zealand and much of New Zealand's infrastructure is constructed upon greywacke rock masses. This thesis deals with determining the rock mass strength of unweathered closely jointed New Zealand greywacke rock masses. Currently, the estimation of rock mass strength and deformability is reasonably well predicted through the use of such empirical failure criteria as the Hoek-Brown failure criterion and empirical expressions to predict deformability. However, previous studies upon predicting the strength and deformability of unweathered closely jointed New Zealand greywacke rock masses has shown that existing empirical methods of determining strength and deformability are unsatisfactory. The problem with predicting rock mass strength and deformability moduli of New Zealand greywacke and the lack of adequate data to calibrate a failure criterion was the starting point for this work. The objective of this thesis was to increase the knowledge of intact and defect properties of closely jointed greywacke, develop reliable rock mass data with which to calibrate a failure criterion and improve the ability to estimate the rock mass strength of greywacke rock masses. A review of existing failure criteria for rock masses was conducted and of these criteria, the Hoek-Brown rock mass failure criteria was selected to calibrate to both the intact rock and rock mass failure data, because of its broad acceptance in the rock mechanics community. A database of greywacke properties was developed based on previous studies upon unweathered greywacke around New Zealand and is attached to the thesis as an Appendix. The database included descriptions of greywacke defect properties and mechanical properties of the intact rock and joints. From this database, inputs could be justified for numerical modelling and later analyses of failure criteria. Records from the construction archives of the Benmore and Aviemore hydroelectric power projects in the South Island of New Zealand were reviewed to obtain information and results from a series of shear tests carried out on unweathered closely jointed greywacke in the 1960s. Data on rock mass strength at failure and rock mass deformability were extracted from these records to assess the predictability of the failure criterion and deformability expressions. Problems experienced during the shear tests at the Aviemore dam site created doubt as to the actual rock mass strengths achieved at failure. The behaviour of these tests was studied using the finite difference code FLAC. The work was aimed at investigating the potential for transfer of shear force between the two concrete blocks sheared in each test and the impact shear force transfer had upon the likely normal stresses beneath each block at failure. The numerical modelling results indicated that a combination of preferential failure occurring in one direction, and doubt in the actual normal load applied to the concrete blocks during testing lead to premature failure in the blocks sheared upstream. The blocks sheared in the opposite direction failed at normal stresses that are reflective of the strength of an unweathered greywacke rock mass, but these results could be explained by failure occurring along defects therefore not satisfying the assumptions of homogeneity typically required of a rock mass failure criterion. The Hoek-Brown failure criterion for intact rock was investigated by fitting it to the largest intact greywacke datasets. For a full set of test data (i.e. including tensile data), the Mostyn & Douglas (2000) variant of the Hoek-Brown failure criterion gave the best fit for a full set of rock mass data. A multiple regression method was developed which improved the fitted curve to intact data in the tensile region and gave the best estimate of tensile strength if no existing lab results for tensile strength were available. These results suggest that the Hoek-Brown failure criterion is significantly limited in its applicability to intact NZ greywacke rock. Hoek-Brown input parameters different to those suggested by Hoek et al (2002) are recommended for using the Hoek-Brown failure criterion for intact NZ greywacke. For closely jointed NZ greywacke rock masses, the results from the shear tests at Aviemore and Benmore were separated into different GSI classes and Hoek-Brown envelopes fitted to the datasets by multiple regression. Revised expressions were proposed for each Hoek-Brown input parameter (mb, s, ab) as a function of the GSI. The resulting revised Hoek-Brown failure envelopes for NZ greywacke offer a significant improvement on the existing criterion used to predict the strength of NZ greywacke intact rock and rock masses. The differences in the behaviour of the reaction blocks that failed before the test blocks and the reduction in rock strength due to sliding along defects from that predicted could be reasoned from recorded observations and the behaviour of the concrete blocks during the shear tests. This study has clearly illustrated the need for continued research in this area. This includes (1) a means of assessing the role of defects upon the shear strength of closely jointed greywacke rock mass into a failure criterion, (2) further modelling of the in-situ shear tests by a discrete element procedure to expressly determine the role of the defect on failure, (3) more testing on rock masses to obtain more data to calibrate a rock mass failure criterion, and (4) more studies on predicting the strength of extremely disturbed rock masses.

Influência da velocidade de rotação da mini-palheta na resistência de um solo siltoso / Influence of the mini-vane test rotation rate on the strength of a silty soil

Gauer, Emanuele Amanda January 2010 (has links)
The problem of tailings disposal and dams failure concerns engineers and national and international environmental agencies. These materials have geotechnical characteristics that differ from geomaterials found in natural deposits, are predominantly silty and have intermediate hydraulic conductivity. As the vane test is a usual technique to estimate the shear strength of clays, the present study extend this knowledge to silty soils. Among the factors that influence the undrained strength measurements, the rotation rate can be considered the most important, particularly when partial drainage during shear occurs. The occurrence of partial drainage during field tests on silty tailings generate uncertainties in the interpretation and estimation of design parameters. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the influence of mini-vane test rotation rate on the undrained strength of a silty soil, with a particle size similar to the gold tailings, through laboratory mini-vane tests. Thus, the automation and customization of a mini-vane test equipment initially manual was developed for the application of different rotation rates. Mini-vane tests were carried out at rotation rates between 0.5 and 54 rpm, corresponding to dimensionless velocities (V) between 2 and 276. The mini-vane tests results showed, in general, an increase in resistance with decreasing the rotation rate due to the occurrence of consolidation of soil at low shearing rates. The time to failure decreased and the displacement to failure increased with increasing rotation rate. There was a wide dispersion of test results, probably due to blade size to soil grain size ratio. Regarding the drainage conditions imposed to the soil during shear, the tests have shown that the undrained conditions are satisfied for V values greater than 10+2, while the drained conditions occurs for V values lower than 1. When 1<V<10+2 partial drainage occurs during shear. The interpretation using normalized results correlating the dimensionless velocity V to the drainage degree U allows the identification of partial drainage occurrence, avoiding the overestimation of soil geotechnical properties in field tests.

[en] INFLUENCE OF SUCTION ON THE SHEAR STRENGTH OF A FILITE RESIDUAL SOIL FROM BELO HORIZONTE, MG / [pt] INFLUÊNCIA DA SUCÇÃO NA RESISTÊNCIA AO CISALHAMENTO DE UM SOLO RESIDUAL DE FILITO DE BELO HORIZONTE, MG

MARIA BERNADETE LUCIANO LOPES 15 February 2007 (has links)
[en] This work intends to evaluate the influence of suction in the shear strength of a young residual filite soil from Belo Horizonte city, of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The experimental program included conventional tests of geotechnical, chemical and mineralogical characterization. The relationship between suction and water content of soil was obtained by the filter paper method and represented graphically by soil-water characteristic curves (SWCC). In order to determine the shear strength of unsaturated soil, direct shear tests with controlled suction were executed with soil samples in their natural state. In addition, conventional shear strength tests were performed with undisturbed and submersed specimens. Both types of tests were performed with different values of stress. From the analysis of the tests´ results it was possible to establish a three- dimensional shear strength envelope in function of the stress state variables ((sigma)-ua) and (ua-uw). Moreover, some considerations about the influence of stress variables in compressibility of soil are discussed. Finally, a comparison of the results obtained for the soil´s shear strength was made with different prediction models using the SWCC and the effective strength parameters (i.e. Lytton, 1995; Vanapalli et al., 1996; Fredlund et al., 1996; Oberg e Sallfors, 1997). The results were also compared with other data found in the literature.

A comparison between torsion and wire-loop shear bond strength tests

Tathy Aparecida Xavier 24 March 2010 (has links)
Objective: verify, by finite element analysis (FEA) and laboratorial tests, if the torsion bond strength test is able to lead adhesive interface to fracture under shear stress and if it would be more advantageous than wire-loop shear test. Material and method: for stress analysis by finite element method, the 3D models of both tests consisted of a resin composite cylinder, an adhesive layer and a dentin cylinder with a larger diameter. The specimens were simulated with both conventional and micro sizes, in a 5:1 ratio, except for the adhesive layer, kept in a constant thickness. Two values of elastic modulus were simulated for the composite cylinder (hybrid and flowable). For the shear models, different distances were simulated between the load point and the adhesive interface. The values of maximum principal and maximum shear stresses and the ratio between both types were analyzed along the adhesive interface, as well as the maximum principal vectors direction and the local of stress peaks. For the laboratorial tests, cylinders of hybrid and flowable resin composite, in both micro and conventional sizes, were adhered onto dentin surfaces by means of 3 adhesive systems. The shear load was applied with a metallic wire-loop at distances from the interface based on literature and, for the torsion test, the torque was applied by specific apparatus developed for that. The values of bond strength were submitted to analysis of variance and Tukeys test. Fracture surfaces were analyzed by scan electron microscopy. The frequencies of fracture types were compared by Fishers test and its relationship with bond strength values were verified, as well as the relationship between fracture features and stresses results obtained by FEA. The experimental parameters for comparison between both tests were: ability for detecting significant differences among the 3 adhesives, change of adhesives ranking while varying the test configuration and frequency of fracture types. Results: both tests showed non-uniform stress distribution. It was not noticed a lower sensibility of torsion test results to changes of the test configurations, nor a major ability for detecting significant differences among the adhesive systems than showed the shear test. The torsion test showed to be more difficult to execute and exhibited a higher frequency of cohesive fracture, however, that occurred most of the time in the composite cylinder, while it occurred mainly in dentin in shear test. There was no certainty about the kind of stress that lead to specimen fracture in both tests. Conclusions: although there was no certainty about the kind of stress that lead to specimen fracture and the major difficulty of execution of torsion test, this test exhibited a feature that suggests future studies: the occurrence of cohesive fracture mainly in the composite cylinder, which could be solved, maybe, by reinforcing the cylinder material.

Modelo de atrito estático em interfaces de contato entre concreto e areia / A model for the static friction between concrete-sand interface contact

Jeselay Hemetério Cordeiro dos Reis 30 March 2006 (has links)
The basic hypothesis employed in the development of the model equation takes into account the interface sliding friction (true friction), a rolling friction (particle rearrangement) and dilatancy(volume variation during shear). The model analytical solution considers the effect of roughness of the contact surface, the grain size distribution and its initial state of compactness of the sand. To calibrate the proposed model, a direct shear stress test under constant load was carried out along a 500mm x 500mm section concrete-sand interface. Furthermore, a discussion and suggestion of the inclusion of the model constitutive equation applied to the analysis of soil-structure interaction using the finite element method are presented. The applicability of the proposed model is proven through the analysis of 1-D and 2-D skin friction piles made of sand mass subjected to compression load

Shear Fracture and Delamination in Packaging Materials : A study of Experimental Methods and Simulation Techniques

Islam, Md. Shafiqul January 2016 (has links)
Packages are the means of preservation, distribution and convenience of use for food, medicine and other consumer products. Package opening is becoming complicated in many cases because of cutting cost in design and production of opening techniques. Introduction of new package opening technique, material or geometry for better opening experience, forces new design measurements which require a large number of prototype developments and physical testing. In order to achieve more rapid and accurate design, Finite Element Method (FEM) Simulations are widely used in packaging industries to compliment and reduce the number of physical testing. The goal of this work is to develop the building blocks towards complete package opening simulation. The study focuses on testing and simulation of shear fracture and shear delamination of packaging materials. A modified shear test specimen was developed and optimized by finite element simulation. Test method was validated for High-density polyethylene (HDPE) and Polypropylene (PP). The developed method has been accepted by international standards organization ASTM. Based on linear elastic fracture mechanics, a geometry correction factor of shear fracture toughness for the proposed specimen was derived. The study concluded that, for ease of opening, HDPE is a more favorable material for screw caps than PP. When performing the experiment with the shear specimen to find essential work of fracture, the ligament length should be varied between twice of the thickness and half of the width of the specimen ligament. Multi-layered thin laminate of Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and aluminum (Al), also known as Al/LDPE laminate, is another key object addressed in this study. Continuum and fracture testing of individual layers provided the base information and input for numerical modeling. The propagation of an interfacial pre-crack in lamination in Al-LDPE laminate was simulated using several numerical techniques available in the commercial FEM solver ABAQUS, and it was concluded that using the combination of VCCT technique to model the interfacial delamination and coupled elasto-plastic damage constitutive for Al and LDPE substrates can describe interfacial delamination and failure due to necking. It was also concluded that the delamination mode in a pre-crack tip is influenced by the ratio of fracture energy release rate of mode I and II. To address the challenge in quantifying shear energy release rate of laminate with very thin substrate, a convenient test technique is proposed. Additionally, scanning electron microscopic study provided useful information on fractured and delaminated surfaces and provided evidence that strengthened the conclusions of this work. The proposed test methods in this work will be crucial to measure the shear mechanical properties in bulk material and thin substrates. Laminates of Al and LDPE or similar material can be studied using the developed simulation technique which can be effectively used for decision support in early package development.

Teplotní stárnutí bezolovnatých nízkoteplotních spojů / Thermal aging of lead-free low-temperature joints

Jansa, Vojtěch January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this masterś thesis is to investigate properties of lead-free low-temperature solders after termal aging. The theoretical part is focused on various types of lead - free solders, pastes used for the manufacture of electrical circuits by thick-film technology and methods of testing the properties of the soldered joints. The practical part deals with the design and production of test substrates for testing the solder joints formed between the SMD component and the ceramic substrate. Two solder bismuth-containing solder was selected for testing, the SAC solder was selected as the reference. After aging with temperature cycling from -30 ° C to 115 ° C, the data obtained by testing the mechanical strength of the solder joint by the shear test is evaluated.
