A considerable amount of data is daily produced by business and financial operations, social media, mobile devices, sensors as well as other gadgets available in the world. This phenomenon gave rise to the big data term whose effects can be perceived by companies, science and governments. However, the strategic intelligence, not the information itself, supports managers eliciting values from big volume of data. For this purpose, transforming the dispersed information in the environment into structure knowledge is necessary and useful for organizations’ decisions. This is a complex process, and despite the tools and available techniques, it is indispensable that the professional in intelligence knows how to deal with inherit cognitive complexity in the courses of analyses. In this context, the objective of the present work was examining how the phenomenon big data affected the course of analyses in the strategic intelligence activity. The research was addressed on how the phenomenon big data was perceived by the interviewers in their analytics activities in strategic intelligence. It also proposed analysis based on its implications. In order to achieve this, a qualitative exploratory study was conducted. Several Brazilian professionals were interviewed, including residents in states such as Rio Grande do Sul, Rio de Janeiro, Distrito Federal and São Paulo. Those interviewed were chosen by agents with experience and knowledge in the strategic intelligence field and/or big data. The guide used for the interviews was structured from dimensions of big data phenomenon and its effects on the course of analyses in the strategic intelligence activity. The technique used for analyzing data was through content review. Results indicate that the volume of big data contributes to the comprehension of collection methods even though it eventually might debilitate the ability to grasp the topic. Other discoveries show that for some of those interviewed, big data has already integrated professional practices on not only performing a more detailed analyses but also developing specific projects. Nevertheless, big data is not a reality yet for others since the necessity of utilizing big volume of data for analysis is not really being perceived. This fact also denotes a paradox between the characterization of production knowledge within big data field and its use in the professional area of strategic intelligence. On the one hand, the great workload about big data is located in the professional area of productive organizations. Not in the academy, though. After all, intelligence professionals have not realized yet the real value of big data phenomenon for their professional performance.

From strategic planning to strategy implementation in the hotel industry in South AfricaLeslie, David 04 May 2009 (has links)
This study was initiated due to the need to address process of moving from strategic planning to strategy implementation within the South African hotel industry. The idea of strategy implementation might seem straightforward: namely that the strategy is formulated and then implemented. However, transforming strategies into action is a far more complex and difficult task. Numerous impeders hamper this process. The main deliverable of the investigation was to develop a conceptual and practical strategy implementation model for the South African hotel industry. The intention of the strategy implementation framework was to serve as a tool that assists in the process of moving from strategic planning to strategy implementation. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were employed for data gathering. The first phase involved five in-depth interviews with executives from three to five star rated hotels. The second phase involved the completion of a structured questionnaire by a sample of 61 three to five star rated hotel managers. Although the data gathering covered the entire strategic management process, there was a specific focus on strategy implementation and the impeders associated with this process within the South African hotel industry. The data from both the phases were analysed and a draft conceptual and practical model was developed. The intention of the researcher was to present a model that is both user-friendly and easy to understand, as well as practical for use by all levels of management with varying educational qualifications, within the hotel industry. A draft model was subsequently presented during a focus group session to a group of hotel executives, managers and management consultants for review. The discussions focussed on a number of aspects relating to the model, including but not limited to the ease of understanding of the model and concepts and its practicality in assisting hotel practitioners move from strategic planning to strategy implementation. Based on the discussions from the focus group, a revised and final model was developed. While the research focussed on the hotel industry in South Africa and therefore its primary application is for the South African hotel industry, further research could be done to investigate the potential application of the model in hotels located in other countries. The model might also be adaptable for use in other service industries. In addition, the research focussed on developing a model that would assist practitioners in the hotel industry move from strategic planning to strategy implementation. During the research, it became apparent that the need for customised hotel industry specific strategy implementation tools is a niche requirement. However, further research must be conducted to investigate, review and ascertain the availability of management and practical tools that could help hotel managers in the monitoring of strategy implementation and if not, a model or scorecard could be developed, taking into account the idiosyncratic nature of the hotel industry. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2008. / Tourism Management / unrestricted

Towards a value-based theory of sustainability framingLoskutova, Tetyana January 2017 (has links)
A thesis submitted to the faculty of Commerce, Law and Management, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in fulfilment of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy, January 2018 / The goal of this research was to develop a comprehensive theoretical perspective on values and framing of sustainability in the context of strategic transformation in an organisational field. This perspective aimed to address the gap in understanding of the role of values within and across framing levels in the sustainability discourse.
The goal of this research was accomplished in two stages. Firstly, a conceptual review of the previous research was used to develop an initial model of the valuebased framing of sustainability. Secondly, a case study based on framing analysis was conducted to verify the model. To accommodate the diversity of framing sources, a framing analysis methodology was developed based on the previous methodologies of value elicitation and framing research.
The results confirmed the usefulness of the framing analysis in understanding the meaning construction and the outcomes of change, conflict, or resistance to change in strategic transformation. Additional insights from the empirical case revealed both value-framing divergence and convergence and the influence of the roles of frame actors in such processes. The framing analysis also indicated that some values might be associated with silencing sensemaking.
The original contribution is three-fold. Firstly, an integrated model was developed based on the conceptual synthesis and the case study. The model differentiates sensemaking, sensegiving, and silencing sensemaking as sub-processes within the framing mechanism of sustainability transformation. The model clarifies the role of values as inputs, outputs, and strategic devices. The model outlines the processes of value-framing divergence and convergence. This model forms the foundation for the value-based theory of sustainability framing. Secondly, a new approach to framing analysis was developed that facilitates analysis of diverse communication styles in a comparable way. Thirdly, this research resulted in the development of an agenda for the advancement of the value-based theory. / XL2018

Faculty Development In Member Institutions Of The Florida Faculty Development Consortium: Strategic Plans, Evaluation Models, Organization, and FundingRoss, Laura 01 January 2006 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine strategic plans and evaluation models in light of organizational structures and funding to determine if member institutions in the Florida Faculty Development Consortium were investing in faculty development based on strategic and measurable criteria. Data were gathered through a mixed method survey mailed electronically to the individuals responsible for faculty development at 31 member institutions of the Florida Faculty Development Consortium. Even though the Consortium was comprised of public and private four-year institutions and public two-year institutions, faculty development programs in these institutions had similarities. Most programs had strategic plans, centralized faculty development units with dedicated staff, and institutional funding. In addition, most faculty development programs had evaluation models in which they collected reactionary responses, but little evidence existed that programs were measuring impact on faculty learning, faculty behavior change, or student success. It was concluded that member institutions in the Florida Faculty Development Consortium were investing in faculty development and providing faculty developers with dedicated time to attend to faculty development responsibilities. Member institutions were evaluating their efforts on strategic, goal-based criteria, but little evidence existed that they were evaluating based on measurable criteria.

Strategic planning to improve the physical activity behaviors of rural Maine adolescentsDrewette-Card, Rebecca Jean 17 February 2016 (has links)
Despite the well-known benefits for youth, fewer than half of adolescents, both nationally and in Maine, meet current physical activity recommendations. Impacting young people’s physical activity is important for their physical, mental, emotional, and social health, as youth health behaviors are predictive of the same behaviors in adulthood, and physical activity levels decline in the transition from adolescence to adulthood. Rural areas have unique challenges that negatively impact physical activity including fewer physical education classes, sidewalks, and exercise facilities. While evidence is emerging on the best approaches to physical activity promotion in urban settings, best practices for rural areas are less well-defined.
Rural communities interested in improving adolescent physical activity need to develop strategies that are based on existing evidence and theory, but also meet local needs. Intervention Mapping (IM) is a framework that can effectively guide strategy development. It involves six steps, beginning with a community assessment and ending with an evaluation plan to assess the implementation and effectiveness of the selected intervention strategies.
IM was implemented in Machias, a rural Maine community, to develop a community-specific strategic plan to increase adolescent physical activity. Lessons learned from formative evaluation of the framework’s implementation included the importance of having an individual lead the process, how to complete the work within a specific number of meetings, which phases require more time to complete, and how to complete multiple phases simultaneously.
Based on the experience in Machias, recommendations for the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC) were developed to replicate the process in other communities. The recommendations, building on the existing Health Maine Partnership (HMP) structure, include creating a workgroup of Maine CDC and local HMP staff to identify a common planning process that could be used by all communities, be it IM or another process; developing a toolkit and worksheets to guide that process; and implementing a training plan.
The experience in Machias is an example for similar communities on how to engage in a systematic strategic planning process to improve adolescent physical activity behaviors and potentially the health challenges faced by of other population groups.

Developing Learning Circles: ‘Sharing and Learning’ from the GENOVATE ProjectGENOVATE partner institutions January 2016 (has links)
Yes / Research institutions, universities and organisations at large have a growing interest for gender equality
and diversity to be integrated into all stages of research and innovation including strategic planning,
promotion, recruitment, performance reporting and transformation. Creating and finding open spaces
where these processes can be approached from different perspectives, in which multiple stakeholders
can express and share their interests and experiences, and where critical conversations, discussions
and knowledge sharing can take place is fundamental for advancing collaborative projects and actions
aimed at profound organisational change. Learning Circles, therefore, are useful resources that
facilitate organisational safe spaces where multiple stakeholders from different backgrounds, sectors,
disciplines, and nationalities reflect, in a relaxed and collaborative atmosphere, about gender equality
and diversity as collective projects; and their impact and relevance for/in research and innovation fields.
The advantages of Learning Circles are manifold: they represent intersectional, interdisciplinary and
even transnational arenas and opportunities for experience sharing, and knowledge generation/transfer. / FP7

Strategic Management Practices. An Investigation of Public Sector Organizations in the Kingdom of BahrainAbushabab, Wajdi January 2016 (has links)
Over more than three decades, there has been a sustained interest in strategic planning in the public sector to secure positive outcomes and long-term growth. However, several authors argued that strategic planning is limited, costly, time consuming and not producing the needed outcomes. Previous research has focused almost upon developed, and not on developing countries, for instance, the Kingdom of Bahrain. This gap in the knowledge provides the justification for this research. Using survey method, this research aims to explore strategic management practices in the public sector of Bahrain. Using both interviews and questionnaires as the mixed methods was more convincing and produced more comprehensive findings and hence stronger credibility. The findings reveal that the strategic management process was not effective in the researched organizations in the strategic formulation stage, the strategic implementation stage, and the strategic evaluation stage. The findings also reveal that there is a low satisfaction level with strategic management process within most of the organizations surveyed. Moreover, the findings revealed that the progress in the transition from strategic planning to a
strategic management approach was limited. However, some of the organizations were found to be at the start of such a transition and this may be a good sign. Additionally, the findings reported many leading edge elements that are closely related to this transition, and help to successfully implement organizational objectives. Finally, the present research is proposing a strategic management model to increase the ability to formulate, implement and evaluate better future governmental strategic plans.
