Not at Home: Im[Migration] and Design

Unknown Date (has links)
Not long ago, Venezuela was considered the wealthiest in Latin America. Today, Human Rights Watch estimates that 2.3 million Venezuelan refugees are scattered through the Americas. Imagine having to leave your home with just a few possessions. The world is currently witnessing a wave of mass migration, with nearly 65 million people being displaced because of war or persecution, and an even higher number migrating from poverty. This thesis uses design to visually articulate the personal narratives surrounding the struggles of flight and the significance of emotion to the debate on migrant identity, acculturation, and the perception of being the other, focusing on the current displacement crisis in Venezuela. The visual message making process of graphic design is used as a catalyst for social good with the intent to create a conversation and generate an experience and that promotes advocacy. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.F.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2019. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Economic Development: A Diagnosis of the High Andean Valleys of Venezuela (Tuname and Burbusay)

Davila-Spinetti, Eloy 01 May 1972 (has links)
The primary objective of this study was to set development policies applicable for the high Andean valleys of Tuname and Burbusay (Venezuela) ; and secondly to develop a quick and inexpensive way to assess development prospects of high Andean valleys similar to the ones studied here. The methodology employed was to classify various agricultural regions with specific development phases using the Thorbecke's classification and policy scheme. Production functions were estimated, fitted and analyzed to determine the parameters pertinent to such a classification for the two valleys where data was available. The analyses and classifications permitted a limited enumeration of policies for the valleys that could logically be expected to bring economic development. However, the study fell short of devising a quick and inexpensive method to assess developmental prospects of similar areas, which would not require some additional data collection and further refinement of the evaluation methodology.

Flyktingskapets situation och möjlighet : Colombianska flyktingbarn i Venezuela och Sverige / Situation and Possibility in the refugee situation : Colombian Refugee Children in Venezuela and Sweden

Fjällhed, Anders January 2009 (has links)
This thesis is about the situation and possibilities in a refugee situation. The aim is to deepen the understanding of the situation for Colombian refugee children and how they are able to handle the adjustments related to a refugee situation, both in a neighbouring country like Venezuela and in a foreign country like Sweden. First, quantitative data were collected and analyzed in order to obtain a general picture of the situation for the refugee children. Further, grounded theory was used to analyze some of the interviews, which resulted in a generated theory. During the process of developing the theory, a case study was carried out with a Colombian refugee family in Sweden. The interviewed persons are fifty Colombian refugee children (boys, girls, and teenagers) who lived in the border states of Venezuela, and a Colombian refugee family (the parents and their two children) who now live in Sweden. The generated theory deals with how the refugee children are able to relate to and manage the new refugee situation. The core concept is possibility-finding: the developed ability to find possibilities in the refugee situation. It is a way of thinking as well as practical action. The latter is evident in the way the refugee children see the possibilities and deal with the challenges and problems they are facing. By the solutions they find and the results that are developing into growth. All of this influences and helps to build up their personal stability. The foundations that emerge, and which support or strain possibility-finding, are peace, culture, language, and networks like familyship and friendship. There is an emphasis on the importance of peace and dreams in order to handle times of huge challenges.

Proyecciones de hogares: una aplicación para Venezuela al horizonte 2021

Yépez Martínez, Brenda 04 October 2010 (has links)
The volume and population age structure forecast is key information to public authorities and their policies and actions for anticipation of situations often uncertain. The need for more detailed information for specific fields like housing, household energy, water or other items contributed to the widespread use of household projections in recent years, although they are still rare in Latin America. Traditionally, the most known and applied method to project households is so called the headship rate. However, the results only provide information about the number of households by age and sex of the reference person, which is a major constraint. Further to the Latin American countries, where extended households are more common and average household size is greater than in developed countries. The main objective of this thesis is to present a projection method which overcomes these limitations. In particular, it is projecting Venezuela households up to the year 2021 by size and reference person age. The research also focuses on making an overview of the different methodologies used for the household projection, its benefits and limitations. This review is not limited only to the authors, includes also contributions from national statistical offices that make households projections worldwide. We apply Ediev (2007) projection method Alfa using micro census data. KEY WORDS: household projections, static model, dynamic model, headship rate extent method, alpha method.

Constitutional Jurisprudence in the Supreme Court of Venezuela

Dordelli Rosales, Nelson Richard 16 October 2013 (has links)
The prime focus of this dissertation consists in exploring constitutional jurisprudence in the Supreme Court of Venezuela over the last five decades, making use of arguments drawn from Venezuelan history and the existing jurisprudential approaches to theories about the general character of law as integrated in numerous public law cases. This study offers a new approach, one that focuses on ensuring that fundamental constitutional principles are aligned with the concrete objectives (purposes) that the Constitution sets out to achieve. This account is developed through a theoretical framework comprising of: I. A historical overview from independence (1811) to democratization (1947 and beyond), emphasizing the fundamentals of the Constitutions of 1961 and 1999, to portray a vivid and accurate picture of the origins of Venezuela’s constitutional democracy; II. A survey, of constitutional cases that illustrates the evolution of the Venezuelan constitutional jurisprudence under the overt or subliminal use of certain default legal theories, namely, legal positivism in the era of the 1961 Constitution, legal realism and Ronald Dworkin’s adjudication theory in the era of the 1999 Constitution III. An insightful discussion of the main arguments of Ronald Dworkin’s principled theory and Justice Aharon Barak’s purposive theory, in an effort to build theorectical support, which links the various points of their respective theories in order to articulate one in the context of the Venezuelan jurisprudence; IV An original attempt to build a theoretical approach based on the Venezuelan constitutional system, history, culture, and identity to bring together the priorities of formalism, particularly the written principles of the Constitution and the priorities of functionalism and social welfare. This is to ensure that the Supreme Court decides accordingly with the constitutional principles as much as their underlying purposes to provide solutions to legal conundrums.
