[en] A LAGRANGIAN APPROACH FOR SIMULATING VISCOPLASTIC AND MULTIPHASE FLUIDS / [pt] UMA ABORDAGEM LAGRANGEANA PARA SIMULAÇÃO DE ESCOAMENTOS DE FLUIDOS VISCOPLÁSTICOS E MULTIFÁSICOS

AFONSO PAIVA NETO 21 December 2007 (has links)
[en] In the last decade in Computer Graphics, they were development many techniques to simulate the behavior of objects such as rigid bodies, water, smoke, hair and cloth. While these techniques focus in simplifled physical models through monophase fluids or ideal solids, we propose new simulation techniques of viscoplastic and multiphase fluids based on a lagrangian approach of momentum equation. These techniques consist in the fluid discretization through particles system instead of traditional grid-based methods. The computational fluid dynamics is performed using the method called SPH (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics). In this thesis, we represent a viscoplastic material like a non-newtonian fluid that it varies between solid and liquid states, and from low to high viscosity depending on the external force applied on material or its own temperature. The simulation of multiphase fluids is made using a hybrid method grid- particle to guarantee the incompressibility of SPH method.

A constraint based viscoplastic model of granular material

Nordberg, John January 2011 (has links)
The goal of this thesis is to develop a constraint based viscoplastic fluid model suitable for time-efficient dynamics simulation in 3D of granular matter. The model should be applicable to both the static and dense flow regime and at large pressures. The thesis is performed for UMIT Research Lab at Umeå University. It is a part of the research at UMIT connected to LKAB and Volvo CE and its applications can be in simulating industrial processes or training simulators. My work is based on previous work done by Claude Lacoursière, Martin Servin and Kenneth Bodin. They have created a constraint fluid model based on {\sph} and Claude's PhD. thesis. This model is extended with additional constraints to handle shear forces, which is necessary to model granular material. Some test cases are specified and compared visually to each other and to the results of other work. The model seems to work visually but more analysis and larger systems are needed to be certain. The model should scale well and is well suited for parallellization.

[en] FLOW OF GAS BUBBLES IN VISCOPLASTIC AND THIXOTROPIC FLUIDS / [pt] ESCOAMENTO DE BOLHAS DE GÁS EM MATERIAIS VISCOPLÁSTICOS E TIXOTRÓPICOS

WILLIAM FERNANDO LOPEZ CANDELA 14 January 2019 (has links)
[en] The gas flow in complex fluids is a phenomenon present in industries such as foods and beverage, pharmaceuticals, chemistry and oil and gas. In this research the phenomenon of gas invasion in cement pastes during the cementation process of wells of petroleum was analyzed. This problem is governed by different parameters such as bubble size, geometry and velocity, fluid rheology, material shear history, injection pressure and flow rate. In this work, we perform an experimental study of the dynamics of a non-spherical air bubble under a Stokes or laminar regime, flowing in materials that simulate cement pastes with different levels of viscosity. Cement pastes and their viscoplastic and thixotropic properties are reproduced using suspensions of Carbopol and Laponite, respectively. A simplified mathematical model for the dynamics of the phenomenon of gas migration, with application in the petroleum industry, is also presented. In the Carbopol study, the effect of the yield stress and the relationship between viscous and inertial forces and their influence on the dynamics and geometry of the gas bubble is investigated. The analysis with Laponite aims to simulate the process of invasion and gas migration during the cement cure process. The effect of thixotropy on the shape and dynamics of bubble migration is analyzed. These results also simulate the complex dynamics of gas migration in fluids with time dependent rheology, such as cement pastes during their curing process. The formation of gas bubbles with flat geometry has been observed, allowing the gas to flow with lower resistance and to form preferred paths that can become channels with high gas flow rates.

[en] NUMERICAL STUDY OF CEMENTATION PROCESS IN ERODED WELLS / [pt] ESTUDO NUMÉRICO DO PROCESSO DE CIMENTAÇÃO EM POÇOS ERODIDOS

HIMER ALBERTO MIELES PINTO 07 March 2017 (has links)
[en] Currently in the oil industry, the numerical simulation is often used to eval-uate different processes through powerful software tools that help to prevent an experimental research in a real well, which can be an expensive and sometimes impractical task. The purpose of this study is to present a numerical investigation to find a better efficiency in the cementation process in eroded wells. In this pro-cess, one fluid displaces another through a tube with variable cross sectional area. Both fluids may have non-Newtonian behavior. The analysis is done by the nu-merical solution of the governing equations, using the finite volume method. Pre-vious studies showed that the displacement process through vertical wells are ruled primarily by the viscosity and density ratios of the fluids, the eccentricity of the annulus, and the Reynolds number. In addition, other variables such as the casing rotation and well geometry can influence the displacement efficiency. Then, the analysis of the influence of these parameters in the flow pattern through the well and removal efficiency in eroded wells will be performed, and will help to optimize the cleaning and removal processes.

[en] NON-NEWTONIAN FLUID DISPLACEMENT IN ANNULI / [pt] DESLOCAMENTO DE FLUIDOS NÃO NEWTONIANOS EM ANULARES

ALINE AMARAL QUINTELLA ABDU 07 March 2017 (has links)
[en] Displacement of one fluid by another is a common process at petroleum industry, as completion and cementing operations of oil wells. The success of these fluids displacement guarantee the lifetime of the wells. The adequate operation occurs when the cement slurry distribution at the wall is homogeneous. In this work, experimental and numerical studies of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluid displacement through annuli are performed. The experiments are performed using a scaled oil well model. The numerical solution of the governing conservation equations of mass and momentum is obtained using the finite volume technique and Fluent and OpenFOAM softwares. The multiphase modeling is performed using the volume of fluid (VOF) method. The effect of rheological parameters, density and viscosity ratios, geometry configuration, and flow rate on displacement efficiency was evaluated to optimize cementing operation. Tests were performed using model and real fluids, Newtonian and non-Newtonian. The displacement efficiency was evaluated analyzing the interface between fluids and measuring the density of the mixture at the annuli outlet through time.

[en] SIMPLIFIED MATHEMATICAL MODEL FOR MIGRATION OF GAS BUBBLES IN VISCOPLASTIC / [pt] MODELO MATEMÁTICO SIMPLIFICADO PARA MIGRAÇÃO DE BOLHAS DE GÁS EM FLUIDO VISCOPLASTICO

WILLIAM FERNANDO LOPEZ CANDELA 02 May 2014 (has links)
[en] In this work, a study of the rising movement of single gas bubble in non- Newtonian fluid is performed, in order to simulate the behavior of a gas bubble in a cement paste during oil well cementing. The fluid is modeled as a non- Newtonian fluid type Hershchel-bulkley with varying rheology in the time. The particle immersed in the fluid is not necessarily gaseous, it also could be liquid or solid, with some restrictions for each case. To develop the mathematical model, it was done a dynamic analysis of the spherical particle immersed in the fluid, and also, using the Ansley and Plesley’s equations (1967), was finished the model. The equation systems was solved using a low order numerical method of Runge Kutta. The numerical model was implemented using Matlab program of the Mathworks Company. The calculations were made for spherical bubble, low Reynolds number (less than 3), constant temperature, wall effect neglected and without effect population. The model was validated comparing the numerical data with experimental results of multiple authors. Experimental data was consulted of Raymond and Rosant (2000), Hervé Tabuteau (2007) and Neville Dubash (2003) authors. It was analyzed the bubble mass effect and the surface tension of the liquid-gas interface in the kinematic particle, to define under what conditions it is possible to neglected its effects. Finally, the effects of rheological parameters on particle kinematics was analized. furthermore, the dependence of the rheology in the time to determine the bubble displacement process in the curing cement was analized.

Aproximação de Galerkin mínimos-quadrados de escoamentos axissimétricos de fluido Herschel-Bulkley através de expansões abruptas / Galerkin least-squares approximations for herschel bulkley fluid flows through an axisymmetric abrupts expansions

Machado, Fernando Machado January 2007 (has links)
The study of non-Newtonian fluid flows in expansions is of great interest for researchers in the several branches of engineering, due to their wide application both in industry and academy. The objective of this Dissertation is to simulate flow problems involving a viscoplastic fluid through an axisymmetric abrupt expansion. The mechanical model employed is based on the mass and momentum conservative equations for isochoric flows coupled with the Generalized Newtonian Liquid (GNL) constitutive equation, with the Papanastasiou-regularized Herschel-Bulkley viscosity function. The mechanical model is approximated by a stabilized finite element scheme, namely the Galerkin Least-squares method. This method (GLS) is used in order to overcome the numerical difficulties of the classical Galerkin method: the Babuška- Brezzi condition and the inherent instability in advective flow regions. The method is built adding mesh-dependent terms in order to increase the stability of the classical Galerkin formulation without damaging its consistency. The GLS formulation is applied to study the influence of power-law index, yield stress and aspect reason in the flow dynamics of Herschel- Bulkley fluids through an axisymmetric abrupt expansions of aspect reason 1:2 and 1:4. Problems involving negligible Reynolds numbers, for a Herschel-Bulkley number range between 0 and 100 and e power-law index range between 0.2 and 1.0 are presented. The results are physically comprehensive and are in accordance with the literature.
