[pt] A PIRÂMIDE DOS INFINITOS MUNDOS POSSÍVEIS DE LEIBNIZ / [en] LEIBNIZ S PYRAMID OF THE INFINITE POSSIBLE WORLDS

RAQUEL DE AZEVEDO 12 December 2019 (has links)
[en] This thesis investigates the story that Leibniz adds to the narrative of the Italian humanist Laurent Valla, transforming it from an anecdote about human freedom in face of divine foreknowledge and will in a study about the nature of creation. In the story, the infinite possible worlds are presented to Theodorus in a dream by Pallas Athena, daughter of Jupiter. What he sees through the rooms of the palace are infinite alternative stories to the unfortunate fate of Sextus Tarquinius, son of the last king of the Roman monarchy. These possible worlds are organized in descending order of perfection, so that the richest in variety is at the top of the pyramid, which is the geometric form to which Leibniz identifies the place where God deliberates on the best. This work traverses the structure of the pyramid to understand what Theodore sees in each room and what ensures the very partition between the rooms. On this route, it is verified that one of the calculations involved in the architecture of the pyramid is the dissimilarity between the part and the whole in the best of the worlds. Sextus participates in the variety of the existing world with its misfortune. Inside one of the rooms, Theodorus is introduced to the problems of infinite analysis by leafing through the book of fates. Finally, this work shows that the dystopic nature of the pyramid is not restricted to the alternative stories that Theodorus finds in each room, but there are also other worlds within the existing world itself. The most perfect world stands out for containing more variety than the others, which makes it a dense world. It is possible to transit through the density of this world through dystopias, understood firstly as an imitation of the structure of the law of the continuum and, secondly, as a bodily support that allows one to traverse, alternately, the phenomenal worlds.

[pt] O CORPO: IMAGENS DE DEFORMAÇÃO E RECOMPOSIÇÃO / [en] THE BODY: IMAGES OF DEFORMATION AND RECOMPOSITION

ALEXIA CARPILOVSKY 06 November 2023 (has links)
[en] In a conference in 1996, Michel Foucault stated that, for him, utopias were born from the human desire to escape from the prison of the body, or to erase bodies altogether. Shortly after, upon reflection, the philosopher felt he was mistaken, concluding instead that what deprives the body of its utopian possibility would be the weight and the limits we are taught to give it. From a contemporary perspective, David Le Breton, in L Adieu au corps (1999), notes that, with the acceleration of technological advances, the body s activities have been increasingly atrophied, replaced by services and devices, forcing the body into a position of limitation or disease. The present research investigates how works from cinema, the visual arts and literature, mainly produced in the first decades of the 21st century, interact with those approaches, discussing three imaginaries concerning the body: as a barrier to be surpassed by the human being through technology; as a reflection of anthropocentrism and of temporality conceptions, in dialogue with the notions of progress, devenir, and performance; and as a place of memory record, through inscriptions or mutilations on the flesh, or through the lack of flesh entirely, turned into a spectral absence. Narratives in which the body is deformed, reformed, or that aim to overcome the body, were selected in order to understand certain aspects of contemporaneity from these representations that deal with the most elementary material unit of the human being.

[en] THE SPECTRAL SUBJECT IN TWO BRAZILIAN NOVELS: MONGÓLIA E SOLIDÃO CONTINENTAL / [pt] O SUJEITO ESPECTRAL EM DOIS ROMANCES BRASILEIROS: MONGÓLIA E SOLIDÃO CONTINENTAL

ADRIANO FERREIRA ENNES 26 June 2015 (has links)
[en] This dissertation aims to investigate and define, taking into consideration the outbreak of the Eighteenth century Elinghtenment Subject crisis and the serious blow in the Western Reason, suffered in the postwar period, the concept of contemporary dystopia, since this can take various hues and tints. It also attempts to analyze how possible phenomena said dystopian : wandering, fragmentation, lack of universal values, gloom, inadequacy or maladjustment compared to pre-established standards, while triggering different modes of literary construction, appear registered in the narratives of Brazilian contemporary fiction, in particular, in two significant works of literature, namely : Solidão continental, by João Gilberto Noll, and Mongólia, by Bernardo Carvalho.

[en] BRASILIA: BIRTH AND DEATH / [pt] BRASÍLIA: NASCIMENTO E MORTE

ALINE TOMASCO ZORZO 02 June 2020 (has links)
[en] This dissertation analyzes the effects of Brasilia s construction, as a materialization of modern utopia in the southern hemisphere, more precisely, in Brazil. We investigate how modern utopia is a product not only of rationality and technical development, but also of will and faith, something that introduces it to religious nuances. In that sense, Brasilia becomes a paradigmatic case of study, because it results from a convergence between the ideals of modern architecture and a mythical genealogy that foresaw the construction of a capital in Brazil s central plateau as a means of unleashing the flourishing of a great civilization in a paradise of abundance, a paradise that later would be proved lost, unleashing melancholy and disillusionment. From this angle, we analyze unconventional readings of the event, extracted from the classics of Brazilian literature, and also mobilize the theoretical framework of allegory, derived from the work of the German philosopher Walter Benjamin, in order to construct an unconventional interpretation of Brasilia, beyond the boundaries of traditional historiography and its linear logic.
