[en] NUMERICAL SIMULATION OF A GAS-LIQUID MIXER FOR PUMPING STATIONS / [pt] SIMULAÇÃO NUMÉRICA DE UM MISTURADOR GÁS-LÍQUIDO PARA ESTAÇÕES DE BOMBEIOLEONARDO CHAGAS CARBONE 26 January 2016 (has links)
[en] The offshore oil production is increasingly using pumping equipment at the seabed for production of wells at long distances from production units. Most of these devices have difficulty to operate in the presence of gas, especially in slug flow conditions, where the pump suction s void fraction can vary significantly. This problem limits the equipment s range of operation. One way to minimize the effects of slugging and thus enlarge the operation range of these devices is to use flow mixers at the pump s suction, which helps to ensure the operation even in the presence of large gas bubbles. Therefore, the design and prediction of the behavior of this type of equipment are essential for proper operation of subsea pumping systems. At the present work, the efficiency of a type of flow mixer to provide uniform void fractions at its outlet is numerically investigated, with the two fluid model. Different geometric configurations are analyzed and the influence of intake flow of both phases is discussed. The methodology is validated through comparison of the pressure drop through the flow mixer with available experimental data, where good agreement was observed. The numerical model also shows that a buffer of liquid is maintained inside the equipment and the gas is forced to disperse in the liquid stream to exit the mixer. The mixer s behavior in the presence of slugs is also investigated. Finally, a new geometry is proposed, which seems to be more efficient to avoid flow s intermittencies.

[en] FLOW OF OIL-IN-WATER EMULSIONS THROUGH CONSTRICTED CAPILLARIES / [pt] ESCOAMENTO DE EMULSÕES ÓLEO- ÁGUA ATRAVÉS DE CAPILARES COM GARGANTASYGIFREDO COBOS URDANETA 14 February 2008 (has links)
essencial
A análise
experimental consistiu
grandeza do
tamanho
das gotas
e o diâmetro do poro.
[en] Flow of emulsions is found in many petroleum recovery and
production processes
and it is often referred to in the context of tertiary oil
recovery. The
characteristics of emulsion flow in porous media depend on
several parameters
such as medium drop size to pore size ratio, viscosity
ratio, flow rate
and the effect of these parameters is far from being
entirely understood. A
detailed analysis at a microscopic scale of the flow is
essential to improve
the understanding of flow of an emulsion in a reservoir.
This would lead
to the development of better simulation models, henceforth
increasing the
predictability capability of reservoir simulators for
enhanced oil recovery
applications. In this work, flow of oil-water emulsions
through constricted
capillaries, used as model for the geometry inside a
porous media, is studied
experimentally and theoretically. The experimental
approach consisted
of measuring pressure drop response as a function of flow
rate for different
emulsions and visualizing the flow under an optical
microscope to understand
the phenomena involved. The theoretical approach is
divided in two
parts. First, the immiscible steady flow of a infinite
single drop suspended in
an less viscous fluid through a capillary was analyzed by
solving the Navier-
Stokes equations with the appropriate boundary conditions
for free-surface
flow. The second part of the theoretical analysis
consisted of solving the
transient flow of a drop suspended in a less viscous fluid
through a capillary
with a constriction. It is shown the effect of capillary
number and viscosity
ratio over the main responses of the flow. The results
show that models
of emulsion flow in a porous media cannot be based on the
macroscopic
properties of the emulsion when the drop diameter is of
the same order
of magnitude as the pore throat diameter. In this case
flow rate-pressure
drop is a strong function of the interfacial tension,
viscosity ratio, flow rate
and drop to pore size ratio. The results can be used to
design appropriate
emulsions to control the water mobility during EOR
operations by emulsion
injection.

[en] INSTANTANEOUS LIQUID VELOCITY FIELD MEASUREMENTS IN TWO-PHASE INTERMITTENT FLOW THROUGH HORIZONTAL AND INCLINED PIPES / [pt] MEDIÇÃO DO CAMPO INSTANTÂNEO DE VELOCIDADE DO LÍQUIDO NO ESCOAMENTO BIFÁSICO INTERMITENTE EM TUBOS HORIZONTAIS E INCLINADOSROBERTO DA FONSECA JUNIOR 22 March 2010 (has links)
(Pulsed Shadow Technique – PST).
a luz verde intensa proveniente do laser associado à técnica PIV.
[en] instantaneous liquid velocity fields at the film, nose and tail regions of slugs in
horizontal and inclined two phase flow. To this end, a combination of three nonintrusive
optical techniques was employed. Two-dimensional particle image
velocimetry (PIV) was used to measure the instantaneous liquid velocity field at
a meridional plane of the horizontal pipe test section, while a synchronized
pulsed back lighting, provided by a matrix of red LED s, illuminated the bubble
contours thereby enhancing contrast of the interfaces (Pulsed Shadow
Technique - PST). A laser-induced fluorescence technique (LIF) was employed
to separate the strong reflections coming from the gas-liquid interfaces
produced by the green PIV laser, The tests were conducted on a specially built
transparent pipe test section, using air and water as the working fluids. The
velocity fields were obtained for flow regimes where the slugs were lightly
aerated. The velocity field results in the nose, tail and film regions revealed
valuable detailed information that helped to better understand the physics of the
flow, besides contributing to the formation of a data bank for supporting the
development of two-phase, horizontal slug flow simulations. The work
conducted also provided statistical information on the main global variables that
characterize the flow, such as, speed and length of gas bubbles and liquid
slugs, and the frequency of passage of these structures.

[pt] ESTUDO EXPERIMENTAL E SIMULAÇÃO DE ESCOAMENTOS BIFÁSICOS BORBULHANTES EM BOCAIS CONVERGENTES DIVERGENTES / [en] EXPERIMENTAL STUDY AND SIMULATION FOR TWO-PHASE BUBBLE NOZZLE FLOW06 August 2015 (has links)
[en] Two phase bubblyflow of two components has widespread applications in industries when efficient mixture in equipaments is required. High rates of mixing are frequently obtained in a converging-diverging nozzle flow. In this investigation a resin made converging-diverging nozzle was designed and built, with pressure taps drilled along its axis, so that the water-air mixture properties could be investigated under the bubbly flow regime. The experimental data was compared to the predicted values by two existing theories(N. T. Thang and D. Chisholm), using the estimated uncertainty of results, showing that in the converging section of the nozzle, the predicted pressure profile matches with the experimentally one. In order to usa Thang s theory, the gas-liquid velocity ratio was experimentally determined as a function of their mass flow rate ratio. A prediction scheme for the throat and the divergent section of the nozzle, using a modification of Chisholm s C coeficient method, was developed using the experimental data of this investigation. It is proposed in this work a prediction scheme for the whole nozzle flow, under the bubbly flow regime.

[en] Emulsion injection in porous medium as an Enhanced Oil Recovery method can turn out to be reality in the operation of onshore and offshore fields, due to increasing rigidity in the disposal of produced water and also due to the potential additional oil production. In order to understand macroscopic behavior of this EOR method, it is necessary to understand the microscopic phenomenon. With this objective, it was performed the numerical modeling of the flow of a droplet immerse in continuous phase through a constricted capillary using the Lattice-Boltzmann method. This method was chosen due to its simplicity on being applied to complex rock geometries and multiphasic flow and due to its good commitment in representing microscopic phenomena. Focusing on understanding the influence of each parameter on flow behavior, several simulation studies were performed altering flow velocity, viscosity ratio, ratio between droplet s and pipe s diameter and interfacial tension. A reduction in mobility is observed as the droplet passes through the restriction caused by the conjunction of viscous and capillary effects. A negative correlation of mobility reduction factor 𝑓 in relation to the viscosity ratio and to droplet size was noticed, as it had been observed before by Roca-Reyes (2011) in a numerical implementation of level-set method. Weak correlation between 𝑓 and capillary number was determined, as in previous experimental essay performed by Robles-Castillo (2011). In this study, it was verified the importance of determining the appropriate set of system parameters, in order to achieve success in the implementation of emulsion injection.

[pt] MEDIÇÃO DO CAMPO TRI-DIMENSIONAL DE VELOCIDADE DA FASE LÍQUIDA DE ESCOAMENTOS TURBULENTOS, GAS-LÍQUIDO, INTERMITENTES EM TUBO HORIZONTAL / [en] THREE-COMPONENT LIQUID VELOCITY FIELD MEASUREMENTS IN TURBULENT, GAS-LIQUID, INTERMITTENT FLOWS IN HORIZONTAL PIPESRODRIGO DOS SANTOS NAVARRO DE MESQUITA 30 June 2020 (has links)
[en] The analysis of gas-liquid intermittent flow in horizontal pipes is of great
relevance importance due its applications in many industrial problems, such
as in the petroleum industry, boiler and heat exchanger tubes and cooling
systems of nuclear power plants. A considerable number of experimental and
analytical studies have been carried out on the pursuit of a deeper knowledge
of this complex phenomenon. The present work describes an experimental
study of a horizontal, gas-liquid pipe flow in the intermittent regime.
Experimental techniques such as high frequency stereoscopic particle image
velocimetry (SPIV ) and laser induced fluorescence (LIF), were applied in
order to obtain all three components of the velocity vector at different pipe
sections, referred to the gas bubble nose tip. A 40mm inner diameter,
17.7m long acrylic pipe was used as test section (L/D approximately 450). The
working fluids, water and air formed the intermittent flow pattern, with
superficial velocities of jL equal 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 m/s and jG equal 0.5 m/s.
A set of three photogate sensors, equally-spaced along the pipe, were
used to measure the bubble translational velocities, and to trigger the
SPIV system, allowing for the determination of ensemble-averaged, threecomponent
velocity fields of the turbulent liquid flow in cross-stream planes
around the gas bubble. The original data obtained revealed the influence of
the faster-moving gas bubbles on the dynamics of the liquid velocity field,
providing valuable information that contribute to a better understanding of
the physics governing the flow, also serving for the validation of numerical
simulations.

[en] EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF ELONGATED BUBBLES IN HORIZONTAL TWO-PHASE INTERMITTENT FLOW / [pt] ESTUDO EXPERIMENTAL DE BOLHAS ALONGADAS NO ESCOAMENTO BIFÁSICO HORIZONTAL INTERMITENTEWALACE ROSA LAURINDO 04 January 2013 (has links)
[en] The present work experimentally studied several relevant dynamic characteristics of gas-liquid intermittent flow through a horizontal pipe. All tests were performed in a test section formed by 50.8 mm internal diameter pipe using air and water as working fluids. The tests covered a region where the flow undergoes a complex transition from elongated bubble flow regime, characterized by long gas bubbles located near the top of the pipe, to the slug flow regime, characterized by a large amount of dispersed gas bubbles in the liquid slug and elongated bubbles with distorted shapes and fronts displaced from the top of the pipe. In this region there is a notable lack of experimental techniques capable of extracting quantitative information of the characteristic dynamic phenomena involved. A set of infrared optical switches was employed to obtain statistical information on liquid piston lengths and frequency, as well as the elongated bubble lengths. An extensive comparison of the data obtained with works available in the literature was performed, validating the experimental results and the technique employed. Also, a high frame rate camera with back illumination was employed to capture images of the nose and tail of gas bubbles. An innovative procedure for image processing was developed, allowing for the extraction of original quantitative information on the complex shapes of the bubble and its relationship with flow variables. Relevant information such as the lowering of the bubble nose as a result of competing gravitational and inertial forces could be verified and confirmed quantitatively seemingly for the first time.

[en] DEVELOPMENT OF TECHNIQUE BASED ON FLUORESCENCE TO MEASURE TWOPHASE SLUG FLOW / [pt] DESENVOLVIMENTO DE TÉCNICA BASEADA EM FLUORESCÊNCIA PARA MEDIÇÃO DE ESCOAMENTO BIFÁSICO EM REGIME DE GOLFADAPAULO HENRIQUE DA SILVA ANICETO 15 April 2008 (has links)
medição instantânea do
O trabalho
concentrou-se no regime de escoamento em golfadas. Água e
ar foram utilizados
como fluidos de trabalho nos testes. A técnica implementada
combina
Velocimetria por Imagem de Partículas (PIV - Particle Image
Velocimetry), com
Fluorescência Induzida por Laser (LIF - Laser Induced
Fluorescence) e
bolha. A técnica
A técnica PIV
[en] This work presents the implementation of a non-intrusive
optical technique
for measuring the hydrodynamic characteristics of liquid-
gas, two-phase flows.
The work was limited to the study of air-water slug flows.
The technique
implemented, already described in the literature, combines
Particle Image
Velocimetry - PIV, Laser Induced Fluorescence - LIF, and
pulsed background
illumination, known as Pulsed Shadow Technique - PST. The
combination of
these techniques allows the simultaneous measurement of the
instantaneous
flow field generated in the liquid by the passage of the
air bubble, together with
the shape and velocity of the bubble. The technique was
employed in the study of
an air bubble rising in a stagnant liquid layer. The PIV
technique was employed in
the determination of the instantaneous flow field in the
liquid using fluorescent
particles illuminated by a pulsed laser sheet. An optical
high-pass filter was used
to block the light scattered by the air-water interfaces
and by the pipe walls,
allowing the digital camera employed to only capture the
particle positions. A LED
panel furnished back illumination at a wave length that
passed through the
high-pass filter and allowed an accurate determination of
the bubble shape. A
digital image processing procedure was employed to
determine the bubble
shape, velocity and liquid flow field. The results obtained
revealed, with excellent
resolution, the details of the liquid flow at the wake,
wall film and nose of the
rising bubble, thereby attesting to the quality of the
technique implemented.

turbinas auxiliares.
Neste trabalho visa-se estudar, através de simulações
numéricas, a influência do
assim, aumentar o
desempenho deste tipo de entrada. O escoamento em uma
entrada NACA
convencional é analisado numericamente e seus resultados
são tomados como
referência para comparações subseqüentes. Em seguida, o
gerador de vórtices é
projetado e acoplado à entrada NACA convencional.
simulações do conjunto entrada
derrapagem do
mastro.
vórtices livre leva a
reduções consideráveis da espessura da camada limite e,
consequentemente, a
ar.
[en] Submerged air inlets are used for several systems of an
aircraft, such as
engine, air conditioning, ventilation, and auxiliary
turbines. This work intends,
through numerical simulations, to study the influence of
the use of a vortex
generator upon the boundary layer that develops upstream
of a submerged air
intake, with the aim of decreasing its thickness and,
thus, to increase the inlet
performance. The flow in a conventional NACA inlet is
analyzed numerically and
its results are considered as a reference for subsequent
comparisons. Then, the
vortex generator is designed and assembled to the
conventional NACA inlet. A
parametric analysis of the influence of the horizontal
position, the angle of attack,
and the area of the vortex generator on the flow field
structure and on the
performance parameters of the air inlet is presented.
Finally, a support mast of the
vortex generator is designed, and simulations are
performed for the ensemble
NACA inlet with vortex generator and mast for three
sideslip angles of the
support. The results show that the presence of the vortex
generator is responsible
for considerable reductions of the boundary layer
thickness and, consequently,
significant improvements of the performance parameters of
the NACA inlet. The
improvements, relative to the conventional NACA intake, in
terms of ram recovery
ratio and mass flow rate, may reach of 58% and 21%,
respectively, for the case of
the NACA inlet with the freely standing vortex generator.
For the case of the
NACA inlet with the vortex generator and support,
improvements of up to 53%, in
terms of ram recovery ratio, and 19%, in terms of mass
flow rate ingested by the
intake, were obtained. The contribution of the drag
induced by the presence of the
vortex generator with support on the total drag of the
ensemble is smaller than
10%.

[en] ANALYSIS OF EMULSION FLOW THROUGH POROUS MEDIA USING CAPILLARY NETWORK MODEL / [pt] ANÁLISE DO ESCOAMENTO DE EMULSÕES EM MEIOS POROSOS UTILIZANDO MODELO DE REDE DE CAPILARESGIOVANE BARROSO LIMA NOGUEIRA 19 August 2011 (has links)
fornecem parâmetros macroscópicos do escoamento. Neste trabalho, o
A integração no tempo do modelo
[en] Emulsions can be used as mobility control agents in different enhanced oil
recovery and carbon storage methods in oil reservoirs. The application of this
technique, with the correct choice of the injected emulsion characteristics and the
determination of optimal operating conditions, requires an adequate understanding
of the emulsion flow in porous media. The macroscopic characteristics of the
emulsion flow through porous media are directly linked to the two-phase flow at
the pore scale. Capillary network models allow the implementation of the drop
flow mechanisms in the pore throats and the determination of macroscopic flow
parameters. In this work, emulsion flow in porous media is analyzed through an
unstructured 3D dynamic network model. The pressure distribution, and
consequently the flow rate in each capillary of the network, isdetermined by mass
balance equation in each pore. The effects of the drops of dispersed phase in the
flow behavior within each element of the network is described by a flow blocking
factor based on experimental results on emulsion flow through single
microcapillary tubes with throats. The blocking factor describes the changes in the
conductivity of each element and it is a function of the throat geometry, the size
and volumetric concentration of the dispersed phase and the local capillary
number. The concentration distribution of the dispersed phase along the network
is described by a mass transport equation, allowing the study of the filtration
process of the drops in the pores and the analysis of the alternate injection of
water and emulsion.Time integration in the dynamic model is performed by a
semi-implicit method and the non-linear system of equations obtained in each
time step is solved by an iterative method. The results illustrate the evolution of
the permeability reduction and the effluent concentration of drops as a function of
the drops size, injection flow rate, concentration of the injected emulsion and
injected volume of emulsion. The analysis of the emulsion/water alternate
injection clearly shows the pore blockage by the emulsion drops and the change in
the flow pattern after the reinjection of water.
