[en] PERFORMANCE OF A NEW CONSTITUTIVE EQUATION FOR NON NEWTONIAN LIQUIDS / [pt] DESEMPENHO DE UMA NOVA EQUAÇÃO CONSTITUTIVA PARA LÍQUIDOS NÃO NEWTONIANOS

RONEY LEON THOMPSON 13 January 2012 (has links)
[en] Non-Newtonian materials exhibit different behavior if submitted to shear or extension. A constitutive equation in wich the stress is a function not only of the rate of deformation, but also of the type of the flow is proposed and analyzed theorecticaly. It combines information obtained in shear, extension and rigid body motion in all regions of a complex flow. This equation is tested with numerical codes for two different axissymmetrical geometries, namely, the 4:1 abrupt contraction and the R(2)z=C convergent channel. Both geometries have been employed to measure the extensional viscosity. In order to validate the model, a test section was buit with a 4:1 contraction. Newtonian and viscoelastic fluids were tested using the Particle Image Velocimetry technique to determine the velocity field.

[pt] ESTUDO DO COMPORTAMENTO DINÂMICO DE UMA VÁLVULA DE ALÍVIO DE PRESSÃO DO TIPO MOLA / [en] STUDY OF THE DYNAMIC BEHAVIOR OF A SPRING-TYPE PRESSURE RELIEF VALVE

MARCOS JOSÉ BABILONIA PÉREZ 23 November 2016 (has links)
[en] Pressure relief valves (PRVs) are important devices which guarantee the safe operation of liquid pipelines, being responsible for preserving the integrity of the duct in case a sudden flow blockage event occurs. The PRV s dynamic behavior, that is, its response time and discharge coefficient as a function of open fraction, can vary considerably depending on the nature and duration of the blockage event, on the valve s characteristics and on the duct length. This more detailed information on the valve s transient behavior is not specified in standards and is rarely made available by valve manufacturers. A detailed characterization of the valve s dynamic behavior is relevant information for the computational simulation of hydraulic transients in liquid pipelines. In particular, the dynamic behavior of the valve discharge coefficient is not known, being normally replaced by data obtained from tests under steady state conditions. In the present work, a detailed study was conducted using a valve model with the objective of obtaining comparative information on the valve discharge coefficient for steady and transient conditions. To this end, a transparent PRV model was constructed in order to allow for the use of the two-dimensional Particle Image Velocimetry technique (PIV) for measuring the instantaneous flow field inside the valve. Pressure and displacement transducers were employed to yield instantaneous information on the pressure drop and valve opening. The valve model was installed in a closed circuit where water was pumped through a long pipe, passing through the PRV and through the blockage valve that was capable of producing flow blockage events in the range of 4 ms to 3.5 s. Control systems were specially constructed to synchronize the events of valve blockage, PIV laser firing, and acquisition of pressure, and displacement data. These data allowed the determination of the instantaneous and phase-averaged values for the valve discharge coefficient.

[en] EXPERIMENTAL EVALUATION OF GAS DISPERSION IN OSCILLATORY CROSS FLOW OF LIQUID / [pt] AVALIAÇÃO EXPERIMENTAL DA DISPERSÃO DE GÁS EM ESCOAMENTO CRUZADO OSCILATÓRIO DE LÍQUIDO

PHILLYPE DE LIMA MASSARI 26 July 2017 (has links)
[en] This work presents an experimental investigation of the flow field induced by the interaction between a bubble plume and an oscillating cross flow. Similar flow conditions can be found in artificial aeration processes used for mitigation of pollution contamination in rivers and submarine outfalls in coastal areas. The mixing zone is highly dependent of the flow field near the plume hence the efficiency of aeration processes. In the present work, controlled surface waves were introduced to generate oscillations in streamwise and wall normal components of the cross flow. The waves were excited with a moving paddle and unsteady flow conditions were selected for the investigation. Air was injected in the bottom wall of the water channel to form the bubble plume. Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) techniques were employed to measure the velocity flow field. Prior to velocity estimation, images were pre-processed using Matlab routines in order to distinguish tracer particles from air bubbles and to create a dynamic mask for the PIV images. Thus, the velocity vector field was estimated using standard PIV algorithms. In addition, properties of the bubbles, such as size and velocity, were also estimated from the acquired images. Finally, the interaction between the bubble plume with the unsteady cross flow was analyzed.

[pt] ESTUDO EXPERIMENTAL DO ESCOAMENTO AXIAL ATRAVÉS DE REGIÃO ANULAR COM ROTAÇÃO DO CILINDRO INTERNO / [en] EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF AXIAL FLOW THROUGH AND ANNULAR REGION WITH INNER CYLINDER ROTATION

08 May 2008 (has links)
[en] The flow between concentric cylinders with an inner rotating cylinder with an imposed pressure-driven axial flow was studied experimentally. The radius ratio was (n) = 0, 64 and the aspect ration was (r) = 265. Friction factor and velocity fields were studied for four rotations of the inner cylinder and for laminar, transitional, and turbulent flow. Velocity fields were measure by Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). The results for friction factor showed that the influence of the rotation is more apparent for laminar and transitional flow, increasing with the rotation of the inner cylinder. For these two flows, the increasing was 100% of f/f0. For turbulent flow, the increasing was gradualy decreasing to 10% of f/f0 for Reaxial = 8458. Instantaneous velocity fields showed complex flow patterns. The time average axial velocity profiles showed a top hat like form with the increasing of inner cylinder rotation and axial Reynolds numbers. For turbulent flow, the influence of rotation in the velocity profiles was small.

[en] Gas-liquid intermittent flows can be found in many engineering applications, such as oil production lines and nuclear reactors cooling systems. The detailed knowledge of this flow pattern is necessary for the development of accurate mathematical models of this complex phenomenon. In this work, an experimental study was developed with the goal to provide data that could be used to improve the existing models for two-phase intermittent flow in horizontal pipes. The high-frequency stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (SPIV) technique was employed along with the laser induced fluorescence (LIF) technique, allowing the measurement of velocity fields in the liquid slug, downstream of the elongated bubble, and in the liquid film, upstream of the elongated bubble. The experimental arrangement allowed the measurement of the three components of the velocity vector in an intermittent two-phase water-glycerine and air flow, in a transversal sections of a 40mm internal diameter horizontal pipe. The results obtained revealed original detailed information on the evolution of the three components of the averaged velocity field associated with the passage of the elongated bubble characteristic of the intermittent flow.

[en] EXPERIMENTAL CHARACTERIZING OF OUTWARD ANNULAR IMPINGING JET / [pt] CARACTERIZAÇÃO EXPERIMENTAL DE JATO INCIDENTE SOBRE SUPERFÍCIE CÔNCAVA EM ESPAÇO ANULAR

LUIZ FERNANDO BERMERO NARDI 01 February 2019 (has links)
[en] Flow induced vibration has shown an increasingly higher relevance in oil and gas industry. The vibration of completion strings, plus normal cycles of wells, can cause premature failure of micro-components present in the system. Flow turbulence is a potential source of vibration for the system. In injection wells, the fluid flows from the inner pipe (completion string) towards the surface of the external pipes (casings). This flow frequently has a turbulent behaviour, due to the high flow rates employed. In the present study, flow resulting from jets in a confined annular space is investigated, for different parameters, including Reynolds number, pipe diameters and number of jets. The geometry resembles that of an injection well, however the Reynolds numbers analyzed are lower than the actual case. The flow field inside the annular space is characterized using time resolved PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) techniques. The dynamic behavior of the perturbations was analyzed and the most relevant spatial structures were estimated using Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD). Results show that, in presence of two jets, flow exhibits intense periodic fluctuations, with well-defined frequencies This suggests the presence of a coupling between jets. Experiments are carried out to estimate the heat transfer coefficients associated with this flow. In the cases with jets close to the surface, results suggest that a reduction of heat transfer occurs in the region of jet stagnation.

[pt] ESTUDO NUMÉRICO E EXPERIMENTAL DA COMBUSTÃO TURBULENTA NÃO PRÉ-MISTURADA DE UM JATO DE HIDROGÊNIO NO AR / [en] NUMERICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF THE TURBULENT NON-PREMIXED COMBUSTION OF A HYDROGEN JET IN AIR

08 November 2021 (has links)
[en] The aim of this work is to carry out experiments and numerical simulations to study the turbulence-combustion interaction in a nonpremixed hydrogen-air ame stabilized in a bluff body wake. For this purpose, are used a PIV technique for the determination of two velocity components and a PLIF technique to determine the uorescence intensity of the chemical species OH, which is a good indicator of the flame front location. PIV post-processing methods are evaluated in order to maximize the spatial resolution of the technique and to remove spurious instantaneous velocity vectors. In addition, the burner is modeled in ANSYS / FLUENT and the simulation results are validated by comparisons with the experimental results. Models based in the Reynolds avareges are used to characterize the turbulence and a flamelet model is adopted to describe combustion. The experimental results indicates that, for the ow rates of air and hydrogen adopted, combustion occurs in the flamelet regime, where the flame front is wrinkled, but without discontinuities. The reactive cases simulations did not agree with the experimental results, indicating that the computational mesh needs to be improved.

[pt] ESTUDO DO TRANSIENTE DE FORMAÇÃO DE UMA BOLHA DE SEPARAÇÃO LAMINAR / [en] TRANSIENT OF LAMINAR SEPARATION BUBBLE INITIATION

PEDRO BRUNO PEREIRA PANISSET 09 December 2020 (has links)
[en] Laminar separation bubbles in Low Reynolds number airfoils is important for several applications such as: gas turbines, wind generators, unmanned aerial vehicles, among others. The performance loss of this airfoils is usually associated with the presence and rupture of separation bubbles. The effects related to the sudden variation of the level of flow disturbances upstream of the bubble formation region are investigated in this work. The idea is to evaluate how the flow behaves when subjected to a sudden variation in the freestream turbulence. This condition can be observed in airfoil cascade of turbines, where the wake of a previous stage can influence the next. Although this scenario is of practical relevance, it has been poorly investigated in literature. For the present study, a water channel from the Fluids Engineering Laboratory was used. The pressure gradient, necessary for the bubble formation, was generated with a convergentdivergent plate and the level of disturbances in the boundary layer was controlled using a vibrating ribbon. Velocity fields in the bubble region were measured using the Particle Image Velocimetry technique with high temporal resolution. The generation of disturbances and measurements were phase locked, thus allowing the use of ensemble average techniques. The bubble was characterized in a so called steady regime, where there was no excitation of controlled disturbances upstream of the bubble. The results were compared with references in the literature, showing good agreement. In the transient regime, the flow was analyzed from the moment the disturbance generator was suddenly turned off until the bubble had completely recovered. In these conditions, it was noted that the bubble grew until reaching a length greater than that observed in the stationary regime. Only after the release of a large vortex did the bubble return to exhibit characteristics similar to those of the stationary regime. This behavior is similar to that reported in the literature for bubble rupture (bursting) but that is still not well understood.

[en] The analysis of gas-liquid intermittent flow in horizontal pipes is of great relevance importance due its applications in many industrial problems, such as in the petroleum industry, boiler and heat exchanger tubes and cooling systems of nuclear power plants. A considerable number of experimental and analytical studies have been carried out on the pursuit of a deeper knowledge of this complex phenomenon. The present work describes an experimental study of a horizontal, gas-liquid pipe flow in the intermittent regime. Experimental techniques such as high frequency stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (SPIV ) and laser induced fluorescence (LIF), were applied in order to obtain all three components of the velocity vector at different pipe sections, referred to the gas bubble nose tip. A 40mm inner diameter, 17.7m long acrylic pipe was used as test section (L/D approximately 450). The working fluids, water and air formed the intermittent flow pattern, with superficial velocities of jL equal 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 m/s and jG equal 0.5 m/s. A set of three photogate sensors, equally-spaced along the pipe, were used to measure the bubble translational velocities, and to trigger the SPIV system, allowing for the determination of ensemble-averaged, threecomponent velocity fields of the turbulent liquid flow in cross-stream planes around the gas bubble. The original data obtained revealed the influence of the faster-moving gas bubbles on the dynamics of the liquid velocity field, providing valuable information that contribute to a better understanding of the physics governing the flow, also serving for the validation of numerical simulations.

[en] Throughout history, fluid engineering is one of the most important areas of engineering due to its impact in the areas of transportation, energy and the military. The measurement of velocity fields is important for studies in aerodynamics and hydrodynamics. The techniques for measuring the velocity field are mostly optical techniques, with emphasis on the PIV technique. On the other hand, in recent years, important advances in computer vision, based on convolutional neural networks, have shown promise for improving the processing of optical techniques. In this work, a hybrid approach between cross-correlation and cascade of convolutional neural networks was used to develop a new PIV technique. The project was based on the latest work of PIV with an artificial neural network to develop the architecture of the networks and their form of training. Several cascade formats of neural networks were tested until they reached a format that allowed the error to be reduced by an order of magnitude for uniform flow. In addition to the development of the cascade for uniform flow, knowledge was generated to make cascades for other types of flows.
