High Frequency Raster Magnets Design for the ARIEL Electron Target Station at TRIUMF

Ishida, Mathew 22 August 2022 (has links)
TRIUMF, Canada’s nuclear and particle physics research laboratory is currently in development of an Advanced Rare Isotope Facility (ARIEL) that will contain a newly designed electron target station. The target at this station is susceptible to destruction from instantaneous spot heating of the beam. To mitigate this, a raster system consisting of two AC electromagnets was proposed. The two magnets will work in tandem, vertical and horizontal, bending to produce raster patterns at 10 kHz. Since complex patterns consist of harmonics higher than the fundamental frequency, a design frequency of 100 kHz was chosen. AC current causes eddy currents which lead to the skin effect, causing high frequency current to concentrate on the outside of the conductor. To address this, a conductor diameter smaller than the skin depth at the given frequency must be chosen. This led to the choice of litz wire consisting of 400 insulated strands for the conductor. The radiation resistance insulation ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) was chosen for these conductors and a 3D printed polyethylene sulfide (PPS) will be used for the coil bobbins. The effects of eddy currents were eliminated from the core material by choosing ferrite, an amorphous material consisting of iron-oxide crystals. Simulations were completed to ensure a homogenous magnetic field in the region of the beam, and the subsequent pole profile was determined. Lastly, a metalized ceramic beampipe is used to integrate with the existing beamline and allow for discharge of any static buildup on the inner surface of the beampipe due to the electron beam. / Graduate

Comprehensive Ionization Model Development for the FEBIAD Ion Source and Its Application for TRIUMF’s Radioactive Ion Beam Program

Maldonado Millan, Fernando Alejandro 28 July 2022 (has links)
Radioactive isotopes enable advanced medical treatments and the study of nuclear structure, nuclear astrophysics, and fundamental symmetries. TRIUMF, Canada’s Particle Accelerator Centre, generates radioactive isotope beams using the Isotope Separation On-Line method. At TRIUMF, the Forced Electron Beam Induced Arc Discharge (FEBIAD) ion source is used to ionize specific isotopes but often presents limited performance and lower efficiencies compared to other facilities. To investigate the source limitation, elucidate the ionization mechanism, and propose improved and highly efficient sources for upcoming facilities, a combined numerical and experimental campaign has been undertaken. The developed numerical ionization model is able to describe the source as an electron impact ion source that is governed by strong space charge effects. The spatially distributed ionization rate is higher at specific locations of the anode volume, and this has been confirmed experimentally. The validated numerical model has been further used to propose simulation-based optimizations. With the overall optimization, the ionization efficiency for the TRIUMF FEBIAD is expected to increase ten-fold. / Graduate

O quarto e último capítulo analisa a obra O Espelho de Próspero, do historiador norte-americano Richard Morse / This essay aims to record the use of the characters Próspero, Ariel and Caliban, from the penultimate Shakespeare’s play, The Tempest, in Latin America, during the century XIX and XX century. In order to achieve this aim, it was divided in four chapters. The first one intends to approach the main characteristics of The Tempest, and of its author, Willian Shakespeare. The second one analyses three authors’ interpretations: Paul Groussac, Rubén Darío and José Enrique Rodó. These thinkers are chronolycaly the first to use the characters on American land, which is marked by the Hispano-American War of 1898. The third chapter aims to understand the differences in the use of the Shakespearians metaphors in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Again, it selects three authors to record this new perception: George Lamming, Aimé Césaire and Roberto Fernández Retamar. The fourth and last chapter analyses the essay O Espelho de Próspero, by the North American historian Richard Morse.

Labra Martínez, Paulina January 2008 (has links)

The Study of Ned Rorem¡¦s Vocal Chamber Music Ariel

Chou, Pei-yin 16 February 2012 (has links)
This study focuses on analyzing and discussing the interpretation of the vocal chamber music Ariel by the 20th century American composer Ned Rorem. (1923-) In 1971, Rorem was commissioned to compose a vocal chamber music for soprano, clarinet and piano by one of his good friend, an American well-known soprano, Phyllis Curtin(1921) . He picked up five pieces of works from the anthology, Ariel, of Sylvia Plath(1932-1963), the American female poet, for this composition. With a tie-in of Plath¡¦s poems and the poetry¡¦s life experience, Rorem used various musical language to reveal the sorrow and frustration in the mind of a woman whose husband has affair, and also the ideology of death in these poems . This essay consists of five parts: 1. Composer Ned Rorem¡¦s life, 2. Rorem and his art songs, 3. Poet Sylvia Plath's life, 4. The composed background of the vocal chamber music, Ariel, 5. Analysis and interpretations of the five lyrics and songs of Ariel. Through my study of Ned Rorem¡¦s Ariel, I hope to assist the readers having a better understanding to this work, as well as providing useful ideas for the interpreta-tion.

We propose that, in Ariel, the hyperbolic, transcendent and parodic transfiguration of real episodes, used as literary substance, corrupts and subverts the specular idea of a confessional truth usually related to the writer s work. Our objective is to examine signs of confluence between Sylvia Plath s poetry and performance art, departing from de idea that the spectacularization of the self, the exhibition of private rituals, the theatricalization of autobiographical circumstances and the undressing of one s craziness and vulnerability are mutual procedures to the poet and the perfomer. Simultaneously unfolding between the inside and the outside of the poem, Sylvia Plath s real suicide and the death and rebirth rituals performed in the literary text appear as symbolic elements that might reveal the performer s liminal space, where reality and representation coexist, and where the performative testimony does not frame only the real subject s body but also his/her infinite possibilities of being restored through art.

Falchi Gálvez, Daniela January 2007 (has links)

Aspects of identity : poet, persona and performance in Sylvia Plath's Ariel.

Esterhuizen, Leigh Caron. January 2010 (has links)
Female identity in Sylvia Plath’s Ariel collection (first published in 1965) is a complex site of being and becoming within a 1950s culture of performance. From a twenty-first century perspective, this dissertation bridges traditional and contemporary readings of Plath and the Plath archive through a referencing of motifs such as celebrity, ‘the gaze’, ventriloquism and clothing. The inter-discursive approach used – literary, psychoanalytic, cultural – attempts to underline the ongoing significance of Plath’s place as a woman poet in literary studies. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2010.

A view screen beam profile monitor for the ARIEL e-linac at TRIUMF

Storey, Douglas Wesley 16 August 2011 (has links)
A megawatt class electron linear accelerator (e-linac) will be constructed at TRIUMF as part of the new ARIEL facility which will produce rare ion beams for the study of nuclear structure and astrophysics, and material science. The 50MeV, 10mA, continuous wave e-linac will drive gamma ray induced fissioning of a Uranium target for the production of neutron rich beam species. View Screens located at a number of places along the e-linac beam-line will acquire two dimensional images of the transverse electron beam profiles, providing measurements of the size, position, and shape of the incident e-linac beam. The design of the View Screens will be presented, based on design studies and simulations performed to evaluate the performance of the View Screens under various operating conditions. These studies include GEANT simulations of the energy loss and scattering of the electron beam as it passes through the scintillation and Optical Transition Radiation beam targets, the subsequent thermal response of the targets, and a ray tracing optics simulation to optimize the configuration of the imaging optics. Bench test have been performed on the resulting optics design to evaluate the imaging characteristics, verifying fulfillment of the design requirements. Construction of a prototype View Screen device is currently underway, with beam tests scheduled for Fall 2011. A total of 14 View Screens will be constructed and installed along the e-linac beam-line. / Graduate

Quezada Sotomayor, Marco Antonio January 2011 (has links)
