Haar Wavelets-Based Methods for Credit Risk Portfolio Modeling

Ortiz Gracia, Luis 24 November 2011 (has links)
In this dissertation we have investigated the credit risk measurement of a credit portfolio by means of the wavelets theory. Banks became subject to regulatory capital requirements under Basel Accords and also to the supervisory review process of capital adequacy, this is the economic capital. Concentration risks in credit portfolios arise from an unequal distribution of loans to single borrowers (name concentration) or different industry or regional sectors (sector concentration) and may lead banks to face bankruptcy. The Merton model is the basis of the Basel II approach, it is a Gaussian one-factor model such that default events are driven by a latent common factor that is assumed to follow the Gaussian distribution. Under this model, loss only occurs when an obligor defaults in a fixed time horizon. If we assume certain homogeneity conditions, this one-factor model leads to a simple analytical asymptotic approximation of the loss distribution function and VaR. The VaR value at a high confidence level is the measure chosen in Basel II to calculate regulatory capital. This approximation, usually called Asymptotic Single Risk Factor model (ASRF), works well for a large number of small exposures but can underestimates risks in the presence of exposure concentrations. Then, the ASRF model does not provide an appropriate quantitative framework for the computation of economic capital. Monte Carlo simulation is a standard method for measuring credit portfolio risk in order to deal with concentration risks. However, this method is very time consuming when the size of the portfolio increases, making the computation unworkable in many situations. In summary, credit risk managers are interested in how can concentration risk be quantified in short times and how can the contributions of individual transactions to the total risk be computed. Since the loss variable can take only a finite number of discrete values, the cumulative distribution function (CDF) is discontinuous and then the Haar wavelets are particularly well-suited for this stepped-shape functions. For this reason, we have developed a new method for numerically inverting the Laplace transform of the density function, once we have approximated the CDF by a finite sum of Haar wavelet basis functions. Wavelets are used in mathematical analysis to denote a kind of orthonormal basis with remarkable approximation properties. The difference between the usual sine wave and a wavelet may be described by the localization property, while the sine wave is localized in frequency domain but not in time domain, a wavelet is localized in both, frequency and time domain. Once the CDF has been computed, we are able to calculate the VaR at a high loss level. Furthermore, we have computed also the Expected Shortfall (ES), since VaR is not a coherent risk measure in the sense that it is not sub-additive. We have shown that, in a wide variety of portfolios, these measures are fast and accurately computed with a relative error lower than 1% when compared with Monte Carlo. We have also extended this methodology to the estimation of the risk contributions to the VaR and the ES, by taking partial derivatives with respect to the exposures, obtaining again high accuracy. Some technical improvements have also been implemented in the computation of the Gauss-Hermite integration formula in order to get the coefficients of the approximation, making the method faster while the accuracy remains. Finally, we have extended the wavelet approximation method to the multi-factor setting by means of Monte Carlo and quasi-Monte Carlo methods.

Ventayol Bosch, Sílvia 25 June 2013 (has links)
This work aims to analyse and to study in depth the novel Andrea Víctrix (1974) of Llorenç Villalonga, one of the author’s last works, so far little studied and representative of the dystopian genre in Catalan literature. It is framed by a general introduction which outlines the origins, purpose and the literary tradition of utopian and dystopian fiction. Subsequent chapters describe the origins, techniques and mode used in the novel, as well as its literary influences and analysis of the critical and satirical approach of the novelist towards the world of progress and all that it includes.

A Comparison of Socially-Motivated Discussion Forum Models for Learning Management Systems

Almukhaylid, Maryam 01 December 2017 (has links)
This thesis seeks to contribute to the field of learning management system (LMS) development in tertiary educational institutions, particularly to advance the adoption of learning management systems (LMSes) by exploring the incorporation of socially-motivated discussion forum models. This study proposes a Web-based application, which includes four different discussion forum models for LMSes, in order to test usability and student preferences. The purpose of this study was to compare two non-social discussion forums and two social discussion forums, to determine their appropriateness in terms of attributes or features and general functionality for LMSes. The design processes led to the creation of a Web-based application called 4DFs, which includes four different discussion forum models. Two of these models are non-social discussion forums: the chat room unstructured model and the traditional general threaded discussion. The other two types are social discussion forums, where users can choose who they converse with: the Twitter-style short comment feed and the Facebook-style. The chat room and the traditional general threaded discussion forums’ features are based on those of Sakai, since the research sample was comprised of students from the University of Cape Town (UCT). The Twitter-style and Facebook-style elements, such as retweets, hashtags, likes and reposts, are based on Twitter and Facebook. A pilot study was conducted to discover any errors or issues with the experimental procedure. A controlled experiment was then conducted with 31 students from the institution. Participants had to fill out a background information survey to gather some demographic information and to understand more about participants’ previous experiences using chat rooms, discussion forums, and social media applications for university related purposes and for non-university related purposes. Following that, participants were given tasks to test all the features of the different discussion forum models. To avoid bias in the participants’ choosing of discussion forum models, the research was conducted with a Counterbalanced Measures Design. Participants had to fill in the System Usability Scale (SUS) questionnaire in conjunction with their use of the Web-based application. Then, after using all discussion forums, they had to fill out a preferences questionnaire that asked about their preferences of the discussion forums and the features. The Twitter-style short comment feed model was preferred in terms of the ease of use and since participants were familiar with this forum. This was followed by the chat room unstructured model and the traditional general threaded discussion in terms of these forums’ ease of use and students’ preference for the layout. The Facebook-style was less preferable. Also, participants indicated that the post button, reply button, edit, delete, and search button were more beneficial features. Participants mention that the layout of the chat room unstructured model was not optimal, since the massive amount of text made it confusing and unclear to decipher. Participants suggested that including the uploading of media, allowing private chat, adding extra features for important posts, and using a repost button in the discussion forums would be more useful. The study found that students preferred that the learning forum include certain characteristics; they prioritised ease of use, less complexity, less interaction and a user-friendly interface over their familiarity with the forum. For learning, there is a need to use the features for a specific purpose so users do not necessarily want extra fancy features (like emojis), instead they want systems that help them to learn efficiently.

Marigó Cortés, Judit 18 March 2013 (has links)
Fossil remains of Eocene primates have been recovered from many sites in the Iberian Peninsula since the 1960’s, although they have been poorly studied. This doctoral thesis includes, on the one hand, a thorough bibliographic revision of all the Cenozoic primate material from the Iberian Peninsula, which represents an essential updating after the new discoveries of the last decades. On the other hand, the description, comparison and taxonomic determination of new primate dental remains of Plesiadapiformes, Adapoidea and Omomyoidea from different Eocene fossil sites of the Iberian Peninsula: Masia de l’Hereuet and Sossís (Lleida), Sant Jaume de Frontanyà (Barcelona) and Mazaterón (Soria), stored in the collections of the Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont. These studies have allowed, in some cases, the definition of new taxa. Specifically, the only material of a plesiadapiform found in Spain has been described, which was recovered from the fossil site of Masia de l’Hereuet (Early Eocene, Southern Pyrenean basins). The studied remains have been attributed to the genus Arcius, the only genus of the family Paromomyidae found in Europe, even though the scarcity of the material has not allowed a specific determination. From the fossil site of Sant Jaume de Frontanyà (Middle Eocene, Southern Pyrenean basins) two new species have been erected, the adapoid Anchomomys frontanyensis and the omomyoid Pseudoloris pyrenaicus. The finding of A. frontanyensis, which existed in the Pyrenees simultaneously with the species A. gaillardi in France, reveals the existence of another lineage of this genus in Europe. The description of the P. pyrenaicus material reveals that the species P. saalae-P. isabenae-P. pyrenaicus-P. parvulus constitute a lineage that evolved during the Middle-Late Eocene in Europe. Moreover, a new genus and species, the adapoid Mazateronodon endemicus, and a new species, the omomyoid Pseudoloris cuestai, have also been described from the locality of Mazaterón (Middle Eocene, Duero Basin). They both present traits in their dentition that differ from the representatives of their groups in the Pyrenean basins and the rest of Europe. This reinforces the endemic character of the faunas of the Western Iberian Bioprovince, which was previously observed in other groups of mammals, caused by the isolation of this region from the rest of Europe during the Eocene, as a consequence to the marine transgression that connected the Cantabric and Mediterranean seas at that time. In addition, Mazateronodon represents the richest sample of an Eocene primate from this bioprovince. From the Sossís fossil site (Late Eocene, Southern Pyrenean basins) a new genus and species has been described, the adapoid Nievesia sossissensis, which will help to clarify, together with the rest of the adapoids studied in this thesis, all belonging to the tribe Anchomomyini, the phylogenetic relationships among the anchomomyins and with the rest of adapoids and extant strepsirhines. The results indicate that the new genera Nievesia and Mazateronodon seem to be more related to each other than to other anchomomyins, and also that the anchomomyins would not be more related to crown strepsirhines than to other adapiforms, and that, on the contrary, there would be a closer phylogenetic relationship between anchomomyins, asiadapines and sivaladapids than to other adapiforms. Nevertheless, these results need to be taken with caution, since more information about still unknown characters is needed.

The extension of the study of formal languages over string case to two dimensional languages or picture languages has been of interest for long for its vast applications. In the thesis and the most common two-dimensional object studied is a picture which is a rectangular array of symbols taken from a finite alphabet. T he objective of this thesis concentrates on the study of generation of Picture language classes by bio-inspired operations namely, `Splicing' and `Self-Assembly' of DNA-Computing. Namely, H-Array Splicing System and Tiling Rule Systems. H-array Splicing Systems is a bio-inspired formalism extended from H-Splicing from string case, a vastly investigated study introduced by T. Head. In particular it is structured as a mechanism by studying two-dimensional right linear grammars. In elaborate this formalism is a mechanism which is applied on finite number of pictures called initial pictures with given set of column and row domino splicing rules. The context site where the two pictures are cut in columns and rows are decided by the sequence of adjacent dominoes in the set of rules. And then the `pasting' of the first part (or sub-array) of the picture to the second part of the picture is done by column and row concatenations respectively. The H-Array Splicing Systems is applied over 2D-RLG languages generating H-Array Splicing languages (HASL). Then the restriction classes defined and study are Self Cross over Arrays and Simple Array Splicing languages and incomparable results are proved with 2D-RLG, HASL. They are not disjoint and they intersect Recognizable languages. Another and the second main formalism introduced and studied in the thesis is Tiling Rule System TRuS . This formalism generates picture by set of tiling rules, assembling tiles. We have proved that the class of L(TS) (Tiling System, recognizable language) is contained in TRuS . Also, we prove there exist a construct of the formalism based on generating pictures in rows or columns which is equivalent to L(TS). The equivalence is proved using Wang systems. Thus leading to an interesting notion of bio-inspired (self-assembling) operation to picture generation.

Iriarte García, Alfredo 08 July 2010 (has links)
The main objective of the thesis is to evaluate the environmental impacts and energy and water demand of the future production of biodiesel in Chile and of its associated energy crops, sunflower and rapeseed, under different options of production, on a national scale. Additional objectives are to identify the most important environmental loads of these energy systems and to evaluate options for improvement in the biodiesel supply chain, taking into consideration a strategy of production using renewable or local resources.National agricultural data are used for the LCA inventory and process data of international databases are adapted to local conditions. The effect of field nitrous oxide emissions and land use change (LUC) is evaluated. The results of this thesis indicate that rapeseed production in Chile has a better environmental performance and lower water and energy demand, compared to sunflower. Mineral fertilizers cause the highest environmental impact in both crops. The main tillage systems of Chilean rapeseed production, conventional tillage and zero tillage, present similar energy demand and environmental impacts profile. This thesis indicates that future production of biodiesel from rapeseed grown in Chile, in a standard scenario with the most likely productions conditions and technology, has less impact than fossil diesel in global warming, energy demand, ozone layer depletion and abiotic depletion. The global warming potential of biodiesel in this scenario is 2.1 kg CO2 equivalents/kg: a 40% greenhouse gas emissions saving compared to fossil diesel. For energy demand, biodiesel presents an energy saving of 62% in comparison to the fossil diesel reference, with an energy efficiency of 2.1, measured as the energy output/input ratio. However, biodiesel has greater impact in seven categories; for example, acidification, water demand, eutrophication and those linked to terrestrial and marine ecotoxicity. The major impacts of the biodiesel are in the rapeseed production stage. In order to reduce the environmental impact and improve the life cycle stages of biodiesel in Chile, it appears that a production strategy involving local, renewable resources should be used, with an industrial ecology approach. Four alternative scenarios were investigated. The use of animal manure, with a corresponding reduction in mineral fertilizer, has the greatest reduction in impacts. The use of industrial forest residues as an energy source for biodiesel plants and using the railway to transport the biodiesel are also recommended from the environmental point of view. The use of highly degraded grassland for rapeseed cultivation is also important, as this option reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 22% compared to using non-degraded grassland. By combining the four scenarios, the impacts of the biodiesel are reduced by between 5% and 58% compared to the standard scenario. The alternative settings could be used in the short term, but should be backed up by economic and social studies.

Sansa Llovich, Jordi 17 May 2013 (has links)
This thesis, titled Fifhs and octaves prohibited in the modal-tonal era, presents a study of sequences of consecutive fifths and octaves throughout the history of western music, basically focusing on the period from early renaissance to the romanticism. During the modal-tonal period, the prohibition of sequences of fifths and octaves was a compositional detail which, imposed as a norm compulsory application, conditioned the sound of western music with independence of the different styles that have been happening throughout these centuries. For this reason, this compositional aspect can be studied as a detail of a compositional practice with a few common foundations cultivated during some four hundred years. However, although the composers were present this rule, all of them performed, occasionally, this type of intervallic successions. This thesis presents a research and classification of this type of successions or typologies circumscribed, therefore, in the era of prohibition and, at the same time, of its practical implementation, analyzing the musical reasons that determine its use. The classification made established 17 categories, each of which brings together the different typologies that have a certain characteristic in common. Based on the different procedures used by composers, a total of 78 consecutive fifths and octaves typologies have been defined. In order to understand the reasons for the realization of some of these typologies, has carried out a study of acoustic and psychoacoustic. Thus, from a scientific point of view, can be understood in a more objective manner the reason of his practice. A suitable large number of works has been analysed since the temporary period studied is very extensive. Thus, the amount of analyzed compositions implies a significant enough sample in order to justify the results. Although thesis includes 927 examples of 188 composers, this selection has been made of the carried out analysis of some 6.100 works corresponding to 343 composers. There has been a search for numerous treaties of harmony and counterpoint to complete the presentation of the different typologies, as well as the chapter that deals with the reason of the prohibition, including opinions of various theorists. References to over two hundred treaties found have been exposed in the bibliography as useful reference. This research includes two extensions. On the one hand, the study of the main aesthetic emerged from the second half of the nineteenth century, presenting examples of consecutive fifths of different aesthetic works, and analyzing new compositional resources that facilitate this practice. On the other hand, includes a study of the influences that traditional music has had on the employment of this type of intervallic successions.

SHOP-Net: Moving from Paper to Mobile

Talbot, Michael 01 January 2011 (has links)
Stock-ordering is one of the challenges that microenterprises face, because shop owners often need to leave their shops to travel to suppliers of goods. Triple Trust Organization (TTO) is a non-profit organization (NGO) that works with microenterprises around Cape Town and addresses this problem. They act as a supplier and fetch stock orders from shops they work with. Their ordering system relied on paper order forms and had a number of inefficiencies. To address these inefficiencies, a mobile-based stock-ordering system was designed with TTO. This system allows orders to be recorded and sent to a server at the TTO office using a mobile phone application where the orders are then processed. This system successfully increased TTO’s efficiency in three ways, namely, improved data processing ability, increased order accuracy and increased access to information. The evaluation was done according to their success criteria and the system has been in use for seven months. We argue that evaluations with NGOs should go further than just the management but include all of those affected by the system.

Essadik, Soufiane Ouaarab 16 November 2015 (has links)
This work analyzes the phenomena of policing behavior conventionally defined as local and community policing, by understanding these principles as methods of policing used in protecting and guarding the interests of the people, their safety, welfare and quality of life. The work has focused on epistemologically understanding these two concepts to establish an origin, evolution and its semantic meanings. A critical understanding by which exposing of the approach is truly in the interest of the people's safety and quality of life in the modern social context. The analysis establishes the need to think about a new paradigm of policing, by using a systemic view that introduces a philosophy of human safety pertaining to the conduct of police when viewed as a system in a social setting. This perspective has generated expectations for proactive policing as a social system, and not only reacts to the strict systematic manipulation and exploitation of the conventional powers. An original approach is introduced - in which the thinking of the police revolves around the human being in establishing proactive and systematic strategies - to allow to generate structural analysis. This will stimulate a triggering event to structurally perturb the political and legal systems to allow for human based adaptations; therefore, the structural adaptations will be consolidated to the interests, welfare and safety of the people. This study introduces not only the idea of the police from this original and primary focus that places itself as a proactive system, but also poses expectations of police performance from a philosophy that revolves around human values and coexistence from the proactive policing in the community focused structurally in the need of an optimal medium as the basis of coexistence and social order. This approach places police to operate proactively in enforcing the law not only from the functional perspective, but also as an interdisciplinary approach is employed, whereby morality and human values are taken into consideration . This invites us to think in new ways to legitimize police power. Furthermore, it will serve as a guide for change within the governance of the police institution. These points deserve further exploration in public law in congruence with these emergencies to rethink the governance of police action.

Petroff, Alisa 13 May 2013 (has links)
The current economic crisis faced by most European countries and the fact that migration represents an inseparable segment of the national economy, are two elements that lead, now more than ever, to a savage competition for attracting highly skilled labor force. Regarding the particular case of Spain, starting from 2000 this country discovers its place as a receiving country, attracting especially unskilled immigrants in housing and agriculture sectors, in the case of men, and domestic service, in the case of women. On the other hand, Romania becomes a provider of labor force for Southern European countries, in response to the increasing demand in unskilled sectors. As a result, in 2012 Romanian population represents 15,7% of the total of immigrant population in Spain with more than 890.000 Romanians living and working in this country (Padrón, 2012). Nevertheless, from 2007, when Romania becomes one of the E.U. members, scholars highlight a diversification of the flow proceeding from this country, with a significant increase of highly skilled profile. With these elements in mind, and taking into account the economic situation of Spain, we should understand the Romanian professionals in Spain as a peripheral profile that develops international careers in a hostile reception context. Therefore, the main objective of the current dissertation is to identify the elements that shape the labor trajectories of skilled Romanian migrants in Barcelona and to explain the role played by the incorporation into the Spanish labor market, in the overall career of these professionals. Regarding the core hypothesis, the labor trajectories shaped by these migrants is marked by the principle of life span development, the principle of agency, the principle of linked lives (social networks), the principle of time and place (Elder, 1993); and, on the other hand, by characteristics of the receiving context and the ability to transfer competences, abilities and professional experience in particular contexts. In order to achieve the objectives, the dissertation is structured in 4 parts. After a brief introduction explaining the way highly skilled Romanian migrations should be understood in the Spanish context, the first part included the theoretical framework. With the life course perspective (trajectory, turning point, transition) as a starting point, the second part of the dissertation includes the overall context and how Romania becomes a country of emigration in the last 20 years. The third part presents the methodological approach. Regarding this particular aspect, the research is based on a mixed method design. In a first stage, it was conducted an online survey on 217 members of a Romanian organization (GRASP) that promote brain networking throughout projects that connect Romanian professionals all around the world. After performing a cluster analysis, the characteristics of the cluster 3 were used in order to select the interviewers in Barcelona. The main results of the qualitative (30 biographical interviews) and quantitative fieldwork are presented in the fourth part of the dissertation that ends up with the final conclusions and reflections.
