Reproducibility and validity of two anaerobic threshold methodologies with overweight women

The twofold purposes of this investigation were: to determine the reliability and validity of two noninvasive methods for determining anaerobic threshold (AT) and; to examine the effect of an aerobic training program on the AT. Twelve sedentary, overweight women participated in an 8 wk walk/jog program 3 dâ ¢wk⁻¹ at 70% VO<sub>2max</sub> with a concurrent hypocaloric diet. A computerized polynomial regression and four independent reviewers were used in an attempt to decrease the subjectivity of noninvasive AT estimation from data plots. Duplicate plots allowed determination of intra-reviewer variability for AT<sub>FEO2</sub> and AT<sub>VE/VO2</sub> estimation. All reviewers fell within the 2-10% variability range accepted for research and clinical purposes, respectively. / Master of Science

What Children Think, Feel, and Know About the Overhand Throw

The purpose of this study was to gather insights about the thoughts, feelings, and knowledge children had about the skill of throwing. Interviews, conducted with 54 children enrolled in two different schools, served as the primary data collection source. Information concerning their knowledge of the biomechanical throwing cues was gathered using a written test. The children were involved in two different physical education programs. One physical education program was taught using the skills theme approach and the other used a traditional approach. Questions guiding the study included asking the children how they felt about how they were learning to throw, what they liked and disliked about their throwing experiences in their physical education classes, and how important they thought it was to learn to throw. Children were also asked to describe and demonstrate the correct way to throw a ball. Assertions were formed using interpretive research. These assertions framed and organized the results section of the study. Results indicated that the children taught using the skills themes approach were more knowledgeable about the skill of throwing and they attributed their throwing knowledge to their physical education teacher. The children taught using a traditional approach showed little knowledge about throwing and they relied on others, not their physical education teacher, to teach them about throwing. Additional results revealed that all of the children said throwing was an important skill to learn and the way to improve throwing performance was to practice. Assessing the suitability of sustainability frameworks for embedding sustainability in higher education curricula: pragmatism versus transformation

Yes / Purpose. This viewpoint paper addresses the use of sustainability frameworks in embedding education for sustainability into the curriculum of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). We focus on the paradox that sustainability frameworks must facilitate transformation of existing structures whilst also being well-enough aligned with current conditions to be readily adopted by today’s HEIs. Design/methodology/approach. We propose a set of four criteria for assessing the suitability of sustainability frameworks for use across the curriculum: Relevance to Current Curricula; Language; Institutional Fit; and Concept of the Future. Using these criteria, we assess how various frameworks align with the current (unsustainable) state of affairs, and their transformative potential. The frameworks assessed are: the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); the Three Pillars Framework; and the Capitals Approach. Findings. We find that each of the frameworks has strengths and weaknesses: the SDGs and the Capitals Approach perform well on alignment, but less well on transformation. Conversely, the Three Pillars Framework perform well on transformation and less well on alignment. By applying the criteria set out in this paper, we hope those working to embed sustainability into the curricula of HEIs will be better equipped to navigate the tensions presented by sustainability transitions. Originality. Correlates of a sense of control of aging

During the past few decades much research has focused on the salutary effects of personal control over life events generally and specifically in the area of health. Studies indicate that people who feel that they are in control of the events in their lives cope more effectively than do those people who feel that their lives are governed by chance, luck, or fate. Feelings of control or mastery are an important psychological coping resource. In recent years much has been written about whether the expanding elderly population will place a burden on society because of their greater susceptibility to illness and disability, or whether life-style changes made by progressive cohorts will bring about modifications of the aging process. The question arises as to whether some sense of control over the aging process exists in a similar fashion as does control over one's health. Further, if such a sense of control over aging exists, what social structural conditions contribute to such a perceived control of aging. The present study, conducted among members of an athletic facility in a southwest Virginia city and among staff, faculty, and graduate students at a major state university, seeks to determine if a sense of control over the aging process exists, and what social structural variables and personal attributes might contribute to such a perception. Results indicate that several social structural variables (for example, gender, age and education) are predictors of perceived control over the aging process. Self-related variables (for example,self-efficacy, beliefs concerning the health benefits of exercise, and exercise behavior itself) are also significant predictors of perceived control over aging. / Master of Science

Compulsory school teachers’ strategies to incorporate ESD (Education for Sustainable Development)  into teaching practices

This thesis explores the strategies compulsory school teachers employ to integrate Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) into their teaching practices in Sweden. Given the increasing importance of sustainability in education, this study investigates how ESD is incorporated into the curriculum and the challenges educators face. The research is framed within the Swedish education system context, which mandates ESD inclusion under the national curriculum guidelines. Using qualitative methods, including interviews with teachers and analysis of educational practices, the study identifies key factors that drive and hinder the effective integration of ESD. The findings reveal that while teachers are motivated by a solid commitment to sustainability, they often encounter obstacles such as a lack of resources, insufficient training, and the interdisciplinary nature of ESD, which contrasts with traditional mono-disciplinary teaching methods. The thesis contributes to the theoretical understanding of ESD by highlighting teachers’ resilience and adaptive strategies for overcoming these challenges. It also provides practical recommendations for enhancing ESD integration through improved teacher training, policy support, and curriculum development.
