The central problem in this dissertation entails how the concept volksmoeder (mother of the nation) gradually developed to secure a place in the Afrikaans drama. Chapter 3 ascertains that characteristics of female personages as mothers of the nation determine their positions in patriarch/volksmoeder relationships in W.A. de Klerk’s Die jaar van die vuur-os (1952). Different types of volksmoeder appear in the above-mentioned farm play and in H.A. Fagan’s Ousus (1934). Chapters 4 and 5 identify how the present day volksmoeder in recent plaasdramas such as Deon Opperman’s Donkerland (1996), André P. Brink’s Die jogger (1997), Ek, Anna van Wyk (1986) and Die koggelaar (1988) by Pieter Fourie, indicate a further development in the concepts patriarch and volksmoeder. In the latter’s Koggelmanderman (2003) the man and woman are removed from the idea of gender. / Die sentrale probleem in die verhandeling behels hoe die konsep volksmoeder met verloop van tyd in die Afrikaanse drama neerslag gevind het. Hoofstuk 1 bepaal die hipoteses van die verhandeling. Hoofstuk 2 fokus op die kenmerke van die volksmoeder. Die gevolgtrekking in hoofstuk 2 is dat Maria in Langenhoven se Die vrou van Suid-Afrika (1918) ooreenstem en kontrasteer met Nederlandse vrouefigure. Nonnie de la Rey 1856-1923 (Afrikaans)

In her lifetime Jacoba Elizabeth (Nonnie) de la Rey, née Greeff (1856-1923) was widely known not only for being the wife of the eminent General Koos de la Rey, but also for her exceptional tenacity during the Second Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902). From December 1900 to the conclusion of the war in May 1902 she and her children lived a nomadic life. Nonnie's experiences were recorded in her memoirs, Mijne omzwervingen en beproevingen gedurende den oorlog, which were published in Amsterdam in 1903. Shortly thereafter – also in 1903 – the English edition, A Woman's Wanderings and Trials During the Anglo-Boer War, as translated by Lucy Hotz, was published in Londen. The 18 months that Nonnie spent wandering through the country probably constitute the most important phase of her life, but she experienced a great deal more, which she recorded in another memoir. Her childhood and pioneer's life are well documented. At the age of eighteen Nonnie met Jacobus Herculaas de la Rey; they were married on 24 October 1876 and settled in the vicinity of Lichtenburg. The period from 1880 to 1899 constitute a kaleidoscope of events in Nonnie's life, for example the First Anglo-Boer War (1880-1881), the loss of Nonnie's father and mother, and a move to the farm Elandsfontein. The South African War broke out in 1899. Nonnie's life during the war years can be divided into two phases, namely the period when she lived in Lichtenburg (October 1899 to November 1900), and the period characterised as her wandering years (December 1900 to May 1902). Events in Nonnie de la Rey's life from 1902 to 1923 include their official visit to Europe, the restoration of Elandsfontein, Union (1910) and Koos de la Rey's political involvement, the Rebellion of 1914 and the death of Koos de la Rey. In her final years Nonnie was involved with various organisations. She was an eminent presence in her community, being revered as a “volksmoeder” by her compatriots. Die Boerevrou 1919-1931 : ‘n kultuurhistoriese studie oor die eerste Afrikaanse vrouetydskrif (Afrikaans)

AFRIKAANS: In die bronne van bewysmateriaal vir Afrikaanse geskiedenis en kultuurgeskiedenis is daar sporadiese verwysings na die bestaan van ‘n vrouetydskrif, getiteld Die Boerevrou. Dit was die eerste, en tot en met die staking daarvan, die enigste Afrikaanse vrouetydskrif. Die tydskrif is in Pretoria van Maart 1919 tot Desember 1931 maandeliks onder die redakteurskap van die eienaar, Mabel Malherbe, uitgegee. Hoewel dit al as ‘n ryk skat van inligting oor die Afrikanervrou en haar leefwyse beskryf is, is daar min inligting oor die tydskrif beskikbaar. Dit is ook in vergelyking met ander tydgenootlike Afrikaanse publikasies soos Die Huisgenoot, baie min vir primêre navorsing gebruik, hoewel oorspronklike versamelings daarvan vandag nog redelik maklik bekombaar is. Gevolglik is Die Boerevrou aan kultuurhistorici betreklik onbekend. As vrouetydskrif het dit ‘n wye verskeidenheid onderwerpe van kultuurhistoriese belang gedek. Die studie het ook lig gewerp op die leesgebruike en -voorkeure van die Afrikanervrou in die vroeë twintigste eeu. Dit is duidelik dat kultuur en die media in ‘n baie komplekse verhouding staan en mekaar wedersyds sterk beïnvloed. Die lesers van Die Boerevrou is nie net deur die tydskrif gelei en beïnvloed nie, soos talle ander studies bevind het die geval met die pers in die ontwikkelingsjare van Afrikanernasionalisme was nie. Boerevrou-lesers het ook aktief meegedoen aan die skryf van die teks van die tydskrif omdat hulle ‘n sosiale netwerk gevorm het wat ontvanklik en gereed was vir die assimilasie en verspreiding van ‘n nasionalistiese identiteit. This monthly periodical was published in Pretoria from March 1919 to December 1931 under the editorship of the owner, Mabel Malherbe. Although it is a rich treasure of information about Afrikaans women and their way of life, there is little known about the magazine. Compared to other contemporary Afrikaans publications, such as Die Huisgenoot, it is also very little used for primary research. This study attempts to determine whether Die Boerevrou can be viewed as an authoritative primary source for cultural history and why it is not utilised as such. Since there are few secondary sources on magazine studies, the development of a scientific methodology for undertaking such studies is considered to be one of the contributions of this thesis. The historical context and economic conditions within which the magazine has been published was determined and information was obtained about the editors, staff, policies and circulation of Die Boerevrou. All have served as a background to make conclusions relevant to the research question. It was found that the magazine is of high journalistic quality for the period in which it was published and reviews a wide variety of topics of interest to women. The study also shed light on the reading practices and preferences of Afrikaans women in the early twentieth century. The relationship that exists between culture and the media is clearly very complex. The readers of Die Boerevrou were not only led and influenced by the magazine, as many other studies have found to be the case with the media during the formative years of Afrikaner nationalism. Boerevrou readers also actively participated in writing the text of the magazine. They formed a social network which was receptive and ready for the assimilation and dissemination of a nationalist identity. Die Boerevrou is an authoritative primary source for cultural history and can be utilised with great success for studies on Afrikaans women from 1919 to 1931. The fact that the magazine is underutilised as a resource is mainly due to two aspects: Most studies of women's magazines are ideological analyses with a feminist slant that create the perception that this genre offers problematic and unreliable study material and should therefore be avoided; The scientific research of women's magazines is furthermore still a relatively young field of study. / Thesis (DPhil)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / Historical and Heritage Studies / unrestricted

The representation of aspects of Afrikaner and British masculinity in the first season of Arende (1989) by Paul C Venter and Dirk de Villiers : a critical analysis

This study performs a critical analysis of the representation of Afrikaner and British masculinity in the first season of the South African War (1899-1902) television series Arende (1989-1993). The study first identifies key concepts in both western identity and masculinity and then moves on to build an historical theoretical base from which season one is analysed. This theoretical base is created through the assimilation of historical sources dealing with masculinity and masculine events from both the Afrikaners and the British. In order to provide a suitable foundation for the investigation into masculinity, the study first briefly explores the concept of identity and how it manifests in both the Afrikaner and British society represented in the first season of Arende. This was done by using a psychological model designed by Roy F Baumeister (1986) which involves both individual and societal identity. Identity as a social construct is also investigated, and the question why identity matters in society is discussed Arguments for a structuralist semiotic approach to identity in a particular society are presented. In dealing with the overview of dominant western masculinity a number of key terms were identified and discussed. These include patriarchy, the female body and masculine control, social labelling, gender order and ‘women watching,’ the family unit, division of labour and public and private space, hegemonic masculinity and the male hero. After this overview, the study conducted an assimilation exercise into historic Afrikaner and British masculinity during the time before and after the South African War. This discussion centres on a number of points dealing with both societies, namely the model male, male military tradition, masculine rebels/outcasts and other masculine issues, and male relations with women. The final part of this study involves the analysis of the masculine theory, generated in the previous chapter, on the Arende text. Text in Afrikaans / After taking her severely incapacitated husband to Europe immediately after the cessation of hostilities to obtain specialist medical treatment, Mrs Rachel Isabella Steyn (Tibbie) in 1905 brought the partially recovered Pres Steyn back to South Africa. She joined forces with her husband to revive the defeated Afrikaner socially, spiritually and materially. Tibbie assisted her husband with establishing the Oranje School for Girls in 1906, and in 1907 the Oranje Association for Women (OVV) was formed with Tibbie as chairperson. Although she was English speaking by birth, she openly identified herself with efforts to promote Afrikaans as a cultural language. Alongside her husband she worked for the building of the National Women's Monument to commemorate those who had died during the war. During all these activities she conscientiously cared for the health and spiritual needs of Pres Steyn. After Pres Steyn's death in 1916 she emerged more forcefully in public life. After the First World War in co-operation with Emily Hobhouse she collected money for the needy in Central Europe. She was constantly occupied with alleviating the needs of people, e.g. by collecting small donations from her people who had been impoverished by the war. In this manner a home could be acquired for Emily Hobhouse and Mrs De Wet, widow of the famous war general, could be assisted in her need. In 1926 Tibbie also arranged the burial of Emily Hobhouse at the Women's Monument. As a leader among her people Tibbie experienced the tensions of the Rebellion and two world wars without becoming involved publicly. Despite sharp political differences between the two language groups and amongst members of her own fam~ly, she successfully maintained her role as binding force. She preferred acting behind the scenes. She was the patroness of many organisations, and while she was often involved in ceremonial situations she always performed her duties with grace. Among both English and Afrikaans speaking peoples she was held in high esteem and among Afrikaners she spontaneously became accepted as Volksmoeder. When she was 83 years of age the Government asked her to act as South Africa's official representative at the abdication of Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands. She was accorded a state funeral at the Women's Monument when she died on 3 January 1955. / Nadat sy haar ernstig ongestelde man na die einde van die Anglo-Boereoorlog vir gespesialiseerde mediese behandeling na Europa geneem het, het mev.
