空間與自我重塑: 佛斯特《窗外有藍天》 / Space and reconfigured self in E. M. forster's _a room with a view_

佛斯特(E. M. Forster)在小說《窗外有藍天》(A Room with a View, 1908)裡,將義大利描繪為自由、激情、活力的國度,而英國相較而言卻是嚴謹、傳統且充滿囿限。在空間與文化的刺激與啟發下,主角露西(Lucy)的義大利旅行逐步地改變她的人生觀以及對生活的態度。藉由義大利旅行與城市的互動,以及遇見他者(the other)的經歷,露西慢慢地得以「變成他者」(becoming-other),突破原有的傳統限制變成遊牧旅行者(nomadic traveler)。本論文擬以空間議題來探究露西在旅行經驗下的「空間變成」(spatial becoming),以及她逐步成形的遊牧自我(nomadic self)。 本論文第一章為總論性質的介紹。第二章主要藉助德勒茲(Gilles Deleuze)與瓜達希(Félix Guattari)的「遊牧學」(nomadology)和「變成」(becoming),結合伊斯蘭(Syed Manzurul Islam)從德勒茲理論延伸的旅行理論,來探討義大利與英國的空間如何影響身於其中的主體。本章將英國空間比喻為房間,義大利空間喻為風景,闡述露西如何面對她的文化衝突並發展自我重塑。然而,露西的遊牧轉變不應被視為身分認同議題下的自我追尋,亦非男性與女性之間的二元對立,而是邁向「變成旅行者」(becoming-traveler)的轉變。 第三章運用德瑟鐸(Michel de Certeau)城市行走(walking in the city)的概念,來檢視露西藉由街頭行走(street-walking)的經驗以及她和義大利生活文化的相遇,所逐步產生的自我改變。由於單獨的街頭行走,對維多利亞時代(the Victorian)的女性而言是一項禁忌,從掙扎到漫遊,露西在城市中的行走非但沒有被動地接受城市設計者所塑造出的都市形象,甚至能夠主動地從她的觀察來解讀詮釋城市,於是跨越了維多利亞時代的限制疆界,從依賴轉為獨立,進而遇見他者(encounter the other)。她的行走經驗開拓了自身的視野,而與城市的互動更是重燃她對於自由和自主權的渴望,因而開啟了她的「空間變成」(spatial becoming)。 第四章則著重於分析露西回到英國的生活,如何受到義大利旅行經驗影響而產生具體轉變。筆者援引伊斯蘭(Syed Manzurul Islam)的概念,剖析露西是一個不斷改變的遊牧旅行者(nomadic traveler),而她的未婚夫賽希爾(Cecil)卻是一個單調不變的靜止旅行者(sedentary traveler)。當露西從旅行經驗中發展出遊牧自我,她與傳統保守的英國空間、賽西爾的衝突也勢將不可避免。義大利顯然觸動她不可逆(irreversible)的變成他者與變成旅行者,露西因此轉而前往義大利繼續其無止盡的旅程。 總括言之,在《窗外有藍天》中,露西與義大利空間的互動驅使她跨越疆界,進行自我轉變。然而,義大利只是帶領她離開嚴謹傳統束縛的旅程序曲。她的遊牧轉變並非一個確切定案的結果,而是不停歇的轉變過程。 / E. M. Forster’s A Room with a View (1908) delineates Italy as liberal, passionate and invigorating, whereas England is portrayed as rigid, conventional and restrictive. Due to spatial and cultural impact, the protagonist, Lucy, changes her view about life by degrees as soon as she travels in Italy. By means of her interactions with the urban space and her encounters with the other in Italy, Lucy gradually enters her becoming-other and breaks through the Victorian confinement into a nomadic traveler. This thesis employs a spatial perspective to investigate spatial becoming embodied on Lucy during her travel, and the formation of her nomadic self. Chapter One is an overall introduction to the whole thesis. As for chapter Two, I focus on Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s nomadology and becoming, and Syed Manzurul Islam’s extension in travel theory to explore how Italian and English spatiality influences the contained subjects. By characterizing England as a room and Italy as a view, this chapter explores how Lucy confronts with her conflicts and develops her reconfigured self. Lucy’s nomadic changes, however, should not be regarded as a self-searching pursuit in terms of identity politics. Instead, her transformation transcends binary opposition between men and women, heading toward her becoming-traveler. Chapter Three utilizes Michel de Certeau’s concept of walking in the city to examine how street-walking and encounters with Italian life and culture lead to the change in Lucy. Since street-walking alone is a forbidden behavior for Victorian women, Lucy’s street-walking goes through certain struggles. Rather than passively receives the built image from urban designers, Lucy is gradually able to read and interpret the city from her observation of the cityscape. From following others’ guidance to gradual independence, Lucy crosses the boundary of Victorian confinement and gets to encounter the other. Her walking experiences significantly open up her view and initiate her spatial becoming. Her interaction with a lived city rekindles her desire for freedom and autonomy. Chapter Four concentrates on the analysis of Lucy’s changes in England as a result of her Italian travel. I apply Syed Manzurul Islam’s idea to claim Lucy as a transformative nomadic traveler in contrast to her fiancé Cecil as a changeless sedentary traveler. I argue that with her formation of nomadic self, the return to English spatiality only leads to ineluctable conflicts between Lucy, her family and Cecil. Lucy accordingly seeks to leave for Italy and continues her endless travel. Italy triggers her irreversible becoming-other and becoming-traveler. Conclusively speaking, in A Room with a View, Lucy’s interaction with the Italian spatiality inspires her to cross the boundary and makes her transformation possible. Yet, Italy is only a prologue to her journey, bringing her out of the rigid convention. Her nomadic change is not a pinpointed result, but a shifting and ceaseless process.

摘要 民國90年台灣成立金控法,一夕之間多家公司透過發起設立或轉換設立和成立金融控股公司,然而,當時沒有機會成立金融控股公司的金融機構又受制於二次金改,金控減半的政策導向原因而不知其門而入。而目前可以進軍金控行列的方式不多,其中唯一較可行就是併購現有的金融控股公司。 本研究將重點擺在甫併購不久的元大金融控股公司。法定上於96年4月2日與復華金控合併生效日,更名為元大金控。本研究對於併購過程做了一系列的探討研究整理。並且對於合併前後動機評估及併購後的綜效探討和對此併購案是否有為股東帶來財富增加的效果做分析。最後,在併購後成為金控公司之一的元大金控,未來的發展策略及執行方向也做出研究。

旅行面面觀:以德勒茲閱讀《愛麗絲夢遊仙境》 / Aspects of Travel: A Deleuzian Reading of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

在路易斯‧卡洛(Lewis Carroll)的小說《愛麗絲夢遊仙境》(Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, 1865)中,愛麗絲是個透過夢境冒險於地底的旅行者。在她的旅行中,愛麗絲一直無法掌握仙境中各種事物的意義,而產生了「怪誕」(the uncanny)觀感,因為仙境中的事物總是一方面打破、另一方面卻怪誕地指涉地面上的世界。本論文擬從「旅行時空性」、「旅行本質」與「愛麗絲做為旅行者」三個面向去解讀愛麗絲旅行的涵意。 / 本論文第一章為總論性質的介紹。第二章從心理學潛意識分析討論文學中的「幻見」(fantasy)與「奇幻文學」(fantasy literature)中的旅行主題。本論文主張潛意識與現實息息相關,愛麗絲夢境中的旅行因而帶有真實色彩。本論文以法國哲學家德勒茲(Gilles Deleuze)的「遊牧」(nomadology)與「變成」(becoming)理論為基礎,結合伊斯蘭(Syed Manzurul Islam)從德勒茲理論延伸出的旅行理論,為小說中的旅行主題帶出新的觀點與視野。 / 第三章分析仙境的時空性(spatiotemporality)與時空性對愛麗絲的旅行者角色的影響。伊斯蘭將旅行者分成兩類:遊牧旅行者(nomadic traveler)與靜止旅行者(sedentary traveler)。遊牧旅行者脫離現在(the present),在平滑空間(smooth space)中進行其「變成」過程;靜止旅行者則只侷限於有限時間中,在固著空間(rigid space)的特定路線移動。因此,旅行的時空性影響旅行者成為遊牧旅行者或靜止旅行者。本論文指出,仙境的多重時空性供給愛麗絲成為遊牧旅行者的機會。 / 第四章著重探討愛麗絲的旅行本質與她的旅行者角色,從分析愛麗絲與他者的相遇情形、她的旅行速度與移動,到她在地底世界的「變成」過程。愛麗絲在仙境的「變成他者」(becoming-other)有待商榷,她不斷地侷限自己於維多利亞(the Victorian)的規範中,無法「與他者相遇」(encounter the other),無法以緊密的速度(speed of intensity)進行「去畛域化」(deterritorialization)。儘管仙境的時空特性促使愛麗絲往遊牧旅行的路線前進,但是她缺少擺脫過去記憶與偏見的決定性動作。愛麗絲的旅行擺盪在「變成他者」、成為遊牧旅行者的邊緣地帶。 / 愛麗絲的旅行既不是靜止旅行,也不是遊牧旅行;她有自己獨特的旅行風格,總是擺盪在靜止旅行者與遊牧旅行者的角色之間。她沒有像遊牧旅行者一樣「變成他者」;她處於無止盡的「變成(遊牧)旅行者」(becoming-(nomadic) traveler)過程中。 / In Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865), Alice is a traveler, adventuring in the fantastic underground under the framework of her dream. Alice’s failure to grasp sense in Wonderland and her constant suspicion of things and inhabitants make her travel an uncanny one, for events in Wonderland always disturb but uncannily refer to those of the above world. This thesis attempts to explore the secrets of Alice’s travel lurking in the dream scenario, identifying and explicating her role as a traveler in the miraculous Wonderland from three aspects of travel: traveling spatiotemporality, the nature of travel and the traveler herself. / Chapter One is a condense, general introduction to the whole thesis. Chapter Two discusses the psychoanalytical theory of the unconscious, the theory of fantasy in literature, and the motif of travel in fantasy literature. The inseparable relationship between the unconscious and the reality will be introduced first. It is this relationship that makes Alice’s travel in her dreamland being effective and possible in the real world. Employing the Deleuzian theory, this thesis takes Gilles Deleuze’s ideas on “nomadology” and “becoming” as the main theoretical framework. Being accompanied with Syed Manzurul Islam’s ideas on the ethics of travel, which is derived from the Deleuzian theory, this thesis takes a step further to develop a new perspective on travel account. / Chapter Three deals with the spatiotemporality of Wonderland, analyzing its spatiotemporal nature and the way it influences Alice’s role as a traveler. Islam divides traveler into two categories—a nomadic traveler and a sedentary traveler. A nomadic traveler is one who eludes the present, undergoing the process of becoming-other on the smooth space, whereas a sedentary traveler is one who travels on pre-set routes of the rigid space within limited temporality. Therefore, the spatiotemporality of a travel will affect the kind of a traveler Alice would be. The multiple spatiotemporality of Wonderland provides Alice with a good foundation to become a nomadic traveler. / Chapter Four concentrates on Alice’s travel and her role as a traveler, analyzing her encounter with the other, her traveling speed and movement, and her becoming in the fantastic underground world. Alice is problematic in becoming-other, since she keeps being captive in the representation of norms received from the Victorian overground which makes encounter with the other and deterritorialization with intensity of speed impossible. Although the spatiotemporality of Wonderland pushes Alice forward to the process of a nomadic travel, she lacks a final move to shake off the confinement of the past memories and preconceptions. Alice is on the brink of becoming-other as a nomadic traveler. / Alice’s travel is neither a sedentary nor a nomadic one; she has a travel of her own, always vacillating between a sedentary traveler and a nomadic traveler. As a sedentary traveler, she is not becoming-other as a nomadic traveler, but on the process of becoming-(nomadic) traveler.

M. Forster’s A Passage to India (1924) from the perspective of post-colonialism, and therefore, the focus of their criticism is often on the representation of the other. However, these critics neglect the fact that the encounter of the self with the other in A Passage to India is in fact a result of travel. Although there is much discussion on racial interaction in A Passage to India, the concept of travel is more than often taken for granted. As the title of the novel indicates, A Passage to India deals with a travel from England to India, and hence, this thesis examines the novel from the perspective of travel narrative. Yet, what does the term “travel” signify? According to Oxford English Dictionary, travel generally refers to a displacement in space. Nevertheless, this thesis tries to re-define “travel” in terms of exposure to the other, deterritorialization of the self, and becoming-other. Since travel narrative deals with the vacillation between the self and the other, this thesis begins with Emmanuel Levinas’s ethics of the other to distinguish the radical other from the metaphysical other. Next, this thesis includes Jacques Derrida’s theories of “hospitality” for further elaboration on the concept of the other. In order to probe into the transformation of the self under the influence of the other, this thesis also employs Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s ideas of “reterritorialization,” “deterritorialization” and “becoming.” The compilation of these theories, finally, amounts to Syed Manurul Islam’s division between two kinds of travel—sedentary travel (travel without traveling) and nomadic travel (traveling without return). This thesis is divided into five chapters: “Introduction” (Chapter One), “Theoretical Framework” (Chapter Two), “Sedentary Travel” (Chapter Three), “Nomadic Travel” (Chapter Four) and “Conclusion” (Chapter Five). Chapter Two, “Theoretical Framework,” is an elucidation of the above mentioned theories. Chapter Three, “Sedentary Travel,” illustrates the concept of sedentary travel by exploring Cyril Fielding and Adela Quested. Adela’s case is much more intricate when compared to Fielding’s, for she goes through two instances of deterritorialization: the first in the Marabar Caves and the second in the court. Chapter Four, “Nomadic Travel,” focuses on the character Mrs. Moore. The exploration of Mrs. Moore not only corresponds to the chronological sequence of the plot but also aims to explain the different stages of transformation Mrs. Moore undergoes.

形變的海洋敘事:《白鯨記》的德勒茲式讀法 / A Sea narrative of becoming: A Deleuzian reading of Moby-Dick

Moby-Dick bears manifold characteristics worthy of exploration. Among the multiple entries into the literary research, Moby-Dick’s achievement becomes evident when being analyzed from the perspective of sea journey. Moby-Dick manifests how a traveler’s mind-set influences her/his perception along the way on the sea journey. In light of encounters with the other, Ishmael’s recounted narrative assists in the understanding of the distinction between him and Captain Ahab as different travelers. The contrast between Ishmael and Ahab concerns whether they really encounter the other and undergo transformation. This thesis considers Ishmael as a traveler who really encounters the other while Ahab keeps his one-track mind-set on his revenge, which halts the chance for his encounter with the other. Following the examination of different travelers, Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari’s nomadology would be applied to further the reading of travelers. The triangular dimension among Ishmael, Ahab and Moby Dick is interpreted with the concepts derived from nomadology such as a war-machine and the State apparatus. Mainly focused on the power of resistance highlighted from nomadology, Ahab’s whale hunt deserves more attention to mobility rather than to the passiveness channeled by his revenge upon Moby Dick. More than what the monomaniac can show, the theory of nomadology would potentially enrich the analysis of Ahab’s pursuit of Moby Dick. Ahab plays both a role of the controlling force like the State apparatus and a role of the resisting power like the war-machine. Besides nomadology, Deleuze and Guattari also employ becoming-animal to suggest the possible inspirational resonance between Ahab and Moby Dick. Instead of an emphasis on the physical resemblance, “becoming” sheds light on the incorporeal transformation which Ahab undergoes within the in-between relationship with Moby Dick. Through his “lines of flight,” Ahab has been involved in becoming-Moby Dick to assert his energy flow out of the intense desire. Overall, this thesis aims at generating more dialogue by bringing nomadology and becoming in the context of Moby-Dick. This incorporation would allow readers to consider Moby-Dick as the manifestation of Deleuze and Guattari’s “nomad thought” rather than as a mere whale-hunting story of adventure.
