Providing a web-based information resource for Afrikaans first language teachers

Heyns, Danielle 03 April 2003 (has links)
This dissertation reports on an action research project that guided the development of the Goudmyn (www.onnet.up.ac.za), a web-based information resource for Afrikaans language teachers. The information needs and utilisation of information resources by 78 Afrikaans First Language teachers were determined by means of a questionnaire and focus group discussions. The quality of the Goudmyn as information resource for and Afrikaans teachers' utilisation thereof were formally assessed. From the data it is evident that Afrikaans language teachers do not utilise the Internet as an information resource to a high degree. Nevertheless, statistics of visits to the Goudmyn indicate that the resource is being utilised increasingly. Reasons for low levels of Internet utilisation by the respondents include the following: a lack of Internet access, time, training, relevant information, awareness of resources and integration of ICT skills into the curriculum. The study found that a web site such as the Goudmyn has the potential to play a central role in supporting Afrikaans language teachers, if the teachers are trained and made aware of the use and applications of the Internet for teaching purposes. / Thesis (MA (Information Science))--University of Pretoria, 2004. / Information Science / unrestricted

Coelomic Fluid Protein Profile in Earthworms Following Bacterial Challenge.

Brooks, Geoffrey Lance 12 1900 (has links)
Proteomic techniques were used to evaluate the protein profile of the earthworm, (Lumbricus terrestris), following a bacterial challenge. One control group received no injection; a second control group received injections of phosphate buffer solution (PBS). The experimental group received injections of PBS containing (Aeromonas hydrophila). After incubation for 12 hours at 20°C, coelomic fluid was collected from each group for analysis by 2-D electrophoresis. There were significant differences in spot appearance and density between control and experimental groups. Sixteen spots showed a two-fold increase in density and 63 showed at least a two-fold decrease in density between samples from control and bacteria-challenged earthworms, respectively, suggesting up- and down-modulation of proteins potentially involved in the earthworm's response to bacterial challenge.

Vliv zvýšené koncentrace oxidu uhličitého na obsah proteinů gliadinové frakce u ozimé pšenice / Impact of elevated carbon dioxide concentration on protein content of gliadin fraction in winter wheat

Hamříková, Dominika January 2015 (has links)
In this diploma thesis protein content of gliadin fractions in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum) var. Bohemia was studied. The crop was cultivated in conditions with ambient (AC) and elevated (EC; 700 mol•mol-1) carbon dioxide concentration. Moreover, half of the samples was fertilized with nitrogen in an amount of 200 kg•ha-1. Other observed environmental factors were drought and UV radiation. The gliadin proteins were separated by A PAGE method and quantified by computer densitometry. Generally the protein content within , and gliadin fractions varied, while the protein content of gliadins remained unchanged or almost unchanged. Clearly the nitrogen fertilization had the most pronounced impact on the gliadin protein content and it significantly increased the protein content in wheat grain. Most subfractions reacted in conditions of AC, drought and without UV radiation and in conditions of EC with natural rainfall and UV radiation. The interaction of nitrogen fertilization with UV radiation (AC, drought) was significant and so was the interaction of nitrogen fertilization excluding UV radiation (EC, drought). The interaction of nitrogen fertilization and natural rainfall significantly increased the protein content in conditions of AC without UV radiation and in conditions of EC with UV radiation. EC alone and the interaction of EC with other factors had only a small impact. The impact was the most pronounced in interaction with nitrogen fertilization. EC with nitrogen fertilization (drought without UV radiation) increased the gliadin protein content and EC excluding nitrogen fertilization (drought and natural rainfall with UV radiation) decreased the protein content.

Stack Number, Track Number, and Layered Pathwidth

Yelle, Céline 09 April 2020 (has links)
In this thesis, we consider three parameters associated with graphs : stack number, track number, and layered pathwidth. Our first result is to show that the stack number of any graph is at most 4 times its layered pathwidth. This result complements an existing result of Dujmovic et al. that showed that the queue number of a graph is at most 3 times its layered pathwidth minus one (Dujmovic, Morin, and Wood [SIAM J. Comput., 553–579, 2005]). Our second result is to show that graphs of track number at most 3 have layered pathwidth at most 4. This answers an open question posed by Banister et al. (Bannister, Devanny, Dujmovic, Eppstein, and Wood [GD 2016, 499–510, 2016, Algorithmica, 1–23, 2018]).

Titulní strany časopisu Reflex a konstrukce hyperreality / Front Pages of Reflex Magazine and Construction of Hyperreality

Krutilek, Ondřej January 2018 (has links)
According the research there were noticed few interesting elements of simulacra "comportment" and about the nature of hyperreality itself. First of all there was described, that the nature of hyperreality is very different compared to realities of lower levels. Hyperreality is a semantic space which is filled with simulacra. Those simulacra are holding very strong meaning, which is technically one of the basic elements of their nature. At the other hand not every meaning did pass to the hyperreal stadium. It means that in the end hyperreality suffers the lack of meanings. Its spectre of meanings is simply very limited. Although simulacrum holds a very strong meaning, it can disappear. In this paper there were described two ways, how it can happen. Both ways are directly connected with interest of audience, which mean in this case the interest of public. Simulacra can simply disappear when the audience forget them because of change of the cultural rules. The other way is a kind of simulacra duel. Against older simulacrum is putted a new one. If audience because of any reason decide, that the new simulacrum fits better to their needs, that the old one, the old one disappears. It was described, that there is wide spectre of objects which are able to pass through simulation and become simulacrum. In the...

Love at first search :   a qualitative study exploring generated attitudes towards listings in SERPs

Nilsson, Linnéa, Nordling, Dante January 2022 (has links)
Background: Search engine result pages (SERPs) act as an information channel between businesses and consumers. There is no way of denying search engines massive success in marketing for companies. SERP allows companies to be seen, communicate, and promote their products and services in an environment sorted by relevance for the consumer. The search engine is one way of building a solid brand online; therefore, it is crucial to investigate how to catch the user's attention and understand their attitudes in the first step of the decision-making process.  Purpose: The purpose of this research is to explore the generated attitudes towards the content that is displayed in each listing in the search engine result pages (SERPs).  Methodology: This research undertook an inductive qualitative approach with an exploratory research design. A pre-study with three cases was developed and eight semi-structured interviews were conducted. The eight participants were based on non-probability judgemental sampling. The respondents were equally diverse between men and women between the ages of 24-29.  Conclusion: This study concludes that the main explored positive attitudes that were generated towards the content of the listings in the SERPs were primarily the relevance of the search term throughout the listing, as well as brand familiarity. Other positive influences of favorable attitudes were short and concise but informative listings as well as displaying pictures. Furthermore, negative attitudes were found to be generated towards poor relevance and paid search in the listings, where organic results generated only positive attitudes towards it.

Webbtillgänglighet för en senior målgrupp inom e-handeln : Kartläggning av till vilken grad den svenska e-handeln inom hälsa uppfyller de EU-direktiv som offentliga organ förväntas efterfölja / Web Accessibility for a senior target group in e-commerce : A survey of the extent to which Swedish e-commerce in health fulfills the EU-directives that public bodies are expected to follow

Fors Ottosson, Alfred, Johansson, Louise January 2020 (has links)
Web accessibility is an important aspect to consider when attempting to ensure a viable customer experience. To obtain web accessibility, websites should be available for everyone, regardless of any impairments. The regulation for web accessibility only applies for Swedish public authorities or for companies that are driven by public financing. These regulations are managed by the EU Web Accessibility Directive. Studies indicate that the total population for senior citizens is rising and that old age naturally brings different degrees of impairments. Research also indicates that e-commerce habits for older people are rising in Sweden, especially in the health category. Exclusion affecting a senior target group is avoided through web accessibility. It can be considered problematic that the Swedish e-commerce are not obligated to follow the EU Web Accessibility Directives. To what degree is web accessibility which public authorities are expected to follow fulfilled in the Swedish e-commerce health category? In this study, a survey of web accessibility on 16 Swedish e-commerce web pages was carried out. The web pages where measured against a web accessibility checklist based on the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). The results from the survey identifies strengths and weaknesses in terms of accessibility. None of the web pages was fully accessible. All web pages indicate deficiencies in the basic criteria of web accessibility which, among other things, affect individuals with visual impairment. However, they all show strengths related to responsive design and greater opportunities for navigation.
