Parenting style moderates the relationship between childhood exposure to violence and sexually aggressive behavior in early adulthoodBeck-Xaysuda, Lisa 06 August 2011 (has links)
A relationship between childhood exposure to violence and the perpetration of sexual aggression in young adulthood has recently been established. In addition to replicating the relationship between these variables, this study also examined parenting style as a factor that may moderate this correlation. In this study, 903 college students completed an online survey assessing childhood exposure to violence, sexual aggression, and parenting variables. Childhood exposure to violence was correlated to the perpetration of sexual aggression in young adulthood. Also, the way in which individuals believed they were parented during childhood moderated the relationship between exposure to violence and sexual aggression. Both the optimal and affectionate constraint parenting styles significantly reduced correlations between exposure to violence and sexual aggression.

Establishing the Reliability and Validity of the Stalking Myth Scale - RevisedHowell, Amanda Lee 14 December 2013 (has links)
Misconceptions about intimate aggression have been found to have serious consequences (Kamphius et al., 2005; Robinson, 2005). These beliefs serve to minimize the crime and blame the victim which can cause individuals to not take the crime seriously (Kamphius, et al., 2005; Sinclair, in press). Initial work combined and updated Sinclair's (2010) Stalking Myths Scale and McKeon's unpublished Stalking Attitudes Questionnaire, but further psychometric analysis is needed (Lyndon, Sinclair, & Martin, 2011). I surveyed 1,200 undergraduates using the Stalking Myth Scale –Revised (SMS – R), a modified version of the Obsessive Relational Intrusion Inventory – Short Form (ORI - SF; Cupach & Spitzberg, 2004), and three intimate partner aggression myth scales. My findings replicated the factor structure of the previous pilot and attitudes regarding stalking were found to be predictors of the likelihood to engage in, the perceived normativity of, and the perceived motivation behind stalking.

Pain tolerance as a mediator of aggressive behaviorBarclay, Nathan 01 May 2020 (has links)
Research has shown that the experiences of pain and aggression are linked. Past research supports the notion that individuals with an aggressive history tend to have higher pain thresholds than their less aggressive counterparts. The aim of this study was to test the notion that past aggressive behavior is positively associated with higher pain tolerances, and that higher pain tolerance would be associated with the use of a clearly aggressive response on a laboratory task. Using data from a larger study on the neuroscience of human aggression (N = 80), a serial mediation model was tested using both objective and subjective indexes of pain tolerance as mediators. Results indicated that historic aggression was positively associated with both objective and subjective pain tolerance, and objective pain tolerance mediated the relationship between historic aggression and current aggression, whereas subjective pain tolerance did not.
