Luquiari, Paluana Curvelo January 2017 (has links)
This work aims to analyze the development of a new methodology, between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, that seems to have promoted a greater scientific rigor. This methodology expresses a new relation between knowledge and technique, assuming a picture of Nature that could be used to enable the correct understanding of the World. Cognitive values were discussed so the interpretation of Nature could happen in the most desirable approach. In astronomy, focus of this work, this strategy was consolidated amidst the use of the telescope, as Galileo, in conjunction with the criteria adopted by him which expressed his desire for an autonomy of science. Nevertheless, I aim to demonstrate that this methodology began with Tycho Brahe, an important astronomer from the pre-telescope age, who developed great instruments for the pondering of the heavens as to get the most accurate numbers during his time; likewise, the empirical adequacy seems to be an important value to be manifested for scientific conceptions, according to the author. In this sense, the work focuses on this new method that seems to have begun with Brahe and have consolidated with Galileo.

La miséricorde selon Saint Jean Eudes

Granger, Daniel 12 November 2021 (has links)

A second edition was published with the title Habiti antichi et moderni di tutto il mondo in 1598. This edition presents a project different from the first one. Its iconographic content is expanded, whereas the author's comments are either reduced or even omitted. The emergence of this type of publication, called costume books, occurred during the Sixteenth Century, along with the cartographic and encyclopedic interest. The period in which the author lived, witnessed the rapid expansion of the printing press in Venice, as well as of the studioli, the cabinets de curiosité and Wunderkammern. Apart from that, those years followed the creation of an interconnected network of publications that established a repertoire of "social types", repeated throughout the years, and helped in the idea that, especially the Venetians, had about the rest of the world. The content of the work covers the habits - in a very broad sense - combined with the representation of a variety of costumes. Vecellio does not only represent European clothing, but he also includes Asian, African and American costumes. This anthology of world clothing is also considered, by some authors, as the first modern history of costume, since it covers commented images from Antiquity until the time of the author, in a broad geographical spectrum. In this text we aim to understand the project of the Vecellian work. Starting with three essays of the current study, we will discuss the ruin of the old values and the mutation (clothing associated with the Venetian myth, the issue of good governance and prosperity of cities, the relationship between ancient and modern etc.); then we will problematize the posture of Venice, which projects a positive image of the city within a turbulent context, as well as the Vecellian way of discussing this subject while presenting the "social types" (doge, Venetian virgin, courtesan...), associated with the State's self-image; finally, we will present an overview of his work, whose purpose will be to understand the author's posture and the discourse towards otherness, discussing some problematic notions of the "I", which is defined from the confrontation with the "Other". Furthermore, together with this, we propose a partial translation of the content of the book into a Portuguese version (unpublished and commented), with the intention of contributing to the theoretical debate - very restricted in our Brazilian reality -, without abandoning, however, the scope described herein / Mestrado / Historia da Arte / Mestra em História

The Relationship of Robert Greene and Thomas Nashe, 1588-1590: An Episode in the Development of English Prose Fiction

Koenig, Gregory R. (Gregory Robert) 12 1900 (has links)
Robert Greene began collaborating with Thomas Nashe as English prose was turning away from the style and subject matter of Lyly's Euphues (1578) and Sidney's Arcadia (1590). When Greene and Nashe came together in London, the two writers appear to have set the tone for the pamphleteers who would establish the realistic tradition that contributed to the development of the novel. Greene's Menaphon (1589) may be a satire representing his abandonment of courtly fiction. The influence of the Marprelate controversy is reflected in Greene's appeals to the pragmatic character of the emerging literate middle class. Greene's Vision (1592) appears to be Greene's affirmation of his critical philosophy at a point of stress in the authors' relationship.

Public Administration Reform In The Context Of The European Union Enlargement Process: The Hungarian And Turkish Cases

Sener, Hasan Engin 01 September 2008 (has links) (PDF)
In this study, administrative reform in the EU accession process was analysed with reference to the cases of Hungary and Turkey. The main goal of this study is to show that both objective (economy) and subjective (politics) factors are important and acceding countries to have room to manoeuvre in the context of the social-liberal framework of the EU. To this end, necessary causality between neoliberal administrative reform and EU accession, and determinism in the enlargement process, which leaves no room to manoeuvre for candidate countries, are denied. In conclusion, it is seen that since there is no public administration model, candidate countries are free to determine the content of the administrative reforms within the framework of general principles set by the EU. Moreover, it is found that the EU accession process is closely related to modernisation of the public administration system in the candidate countries and administrative reform has been overlapped and equalized to EU accession. Finally, it is understood that administrative reform with its extensive content, caused centralisation.

Giovanni Battista Cavalieri's Ecclesiae militantis triumphi : Jesuits, martyrs, print, and the counter-reformation

Tsoumis, Karine January 2005 (has links)
Five hundred years of Christian martyrdom are represented in the Ecclesiae militantis triumphi (1583). Engraved by Giovanni Battista Cavalieri, the series that was bound into a book reproduces a fresco cycle in the church of San Stefano Rotondo in Rome. While the church belonged to the Jesuit German-Hungarian College, the book accompanied priests in their proselytizing mission in Northern Europe. This thesis will look at the function of the book in relation to various audiences, in different viewing contexts. Analyzed primarily in relation to the intended Jesuit audience as an object of devotion, the book will also be inserted within the Early Christian revival promoted by Gregory XIII (1572-1585). Finally, it will be looked at in relation to an audience composed of individuals interested in factual knowledge about Early Christian history and in the martyr as a historical figure. A general endeavor of the thesis is to situate the Ecclesiae militantis triumphi in relation to late sixteen-century representations of martyrdom, both Catholic and Protestant, as well as in relation to other contemporary Roman printed works.
