Jádro filozofického názoru Jiřího Buquoye v kontextu romantické vědy / Principle of Georg Buquoy's philosophical outlook in the context of romantic science

This diploma thesis deals with the basic principles of Georg Buquoy's (1781-1851) philosophy, which were presented in his unpublished treatise Kern meiner philosophischen Grundansicht. Buquoy's ideas are interpreted in the context of contemporary scientific discourse in the Czech lands. Attention is also drawn to Buquoy's foreign inspiration sources. The explication of Buquoy's ideas is based on the theory of intellectual history, with special focus on the interrelationship between natural sciences and humanities and the esotericism of the late 18th and the first half of the 19th century.

A autora norte-americana Kate Chopin (1850-1904) é conhecida por sua vasta produção de contos ambientados no estado de Louisiana, os quais exibem uma representação das peculiaridades locais. Em vários dos contos, Chopin focaliza a cultura Cajun e propõe uma representação ficcional da língua daquela comunidade (língua crioula Cajun) através da fala dos personagens, como ocorre em "No baile acadiano". Dividida em três capítulos, a presente dissertação almeja investigar se a questão da regionalidade, representada por marcas da cultura local e de identidade cultural dos personagens, influencia na permanência de expressões em língua francesa e língua Cajun no processo tradutório do conto At the ‘Cadian Ball para a língua portuguesa: "No baile acadiano". A pesquisa permitiu constatar que houve influência das questões culturais e de regionalidades na tradução do conto, uma vez que o uso da língua transmite informação social, aspecto exemplificado durante a alternância de códigos entre os personagens dependendo do interlocutor. Divided into three chapters, this dissertation aims to investigate whether the issue of regionality, represented by marks of local culture and cultural identity of the characters, influences in the maintenance of expressions in French and Cajun language in the translation process of the short story "At the 'Cadian Ball" into Portuguese: "No baile Acadiano". The research showed that there was influence of cultural issues and regionalities on the translation of the story because the use of language conveys social information, aspect that was exemplified during the code-switching process among characters, depending on the interlocutor. So, it is noticeable that the translator's attitude (Denise Mariné) can be considered as respectful in relation to the author and to linguistic aspects that would be lost if such sentences and/or expressions/phraseologisms were translated into Portuguese.

Transition of the Sonoran presidios from Spanish to Mexican control, 1790-1835

The presidial system was the focus for Spanish and Mexican military operations in northern New Spain. The Spanish established these garrisons to provide their settlers and missionaries protection from hostile indigenous tribes opposing expansion into their territories. Between 1692 and 1776, presidios were established on the Sonoran frontier at Fronteras, Terrenate, Horcasitas, Santa Cruz, Altar, Tubac, Bavispe, Bacoachi, and Tucson. The Spanish and Mexican governments never completely solved the problem of adequately supplying the Sonoran presidios with men and materials to achieve dominance over the native populations. These conditions left the presidios and civilian population exposed to attack and harrassment by hostile Indians. Examination of the major events concerning the presidios from 1790 to 1835, including the Apache pacification policies, establishment of "Indian" presidios, the Mexican war for independence, transfer from Spanish to Mexican control, and the study of presidial personnel, reveals how the presidio functioned as a major frontier institution.

Set in the Old West of the 1870s, the story primarily concerns itself with events in the train robber's life from the time he owned and raced the Denton Mare to the now famous shoot-out in Round Rock, Texas. It is a story of crime and betrayal told through the eyes of Bass and one of his close confederates, Jim Murphy.

Das Buch "Seuils" des französischen Literaturwissenschaftlers Gérard Genette wurde unter dem Titel "Paratexte" ins Deutsche übersetzt. Genette beschreibt den Paratext als "jenes Beiwerk, durch das ein Text zum Buch wird und als solches vor die Leser und, allgemeiner, vor die Öffentlichkeit tritt." (Genette, Gérard: Paratexte. Das Buch vom Beiwerk des Buches. Frankfurt a.M., 2001, S. 10.) In dieser Dissertation werden die Paratexte von 47 Sagenbüchern untersucht. Das Buchkorpus wird nach folgenden zwei Zeiträumen aufgeteilt: a) Buchkorpus mit Sagenbüchern aus dem Zeitraum von 1851 bis 1925. b) Buchkorpus mit Sagenbüchern aus dem Zeitraum von 1946 bis 1998. Die untersuchten Paratexte sind zum Beispiel: Nennung des Herausgebers, Titel, Vorwort, Schrift, Illustrationen und Umschlag. / The book "Seuils" written by the French literature specialist Gérard Genette was translated into German under the title "Paratexte". Shelleyan monsters: the figure of Percy Shelley in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Peter Ackroyd’s The Casebook of Victor Frankenstein

Magister Artium - MA / This thesis will examine the representation of the figure of Percy Shelley in the text of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818). My hypothesis is that Percy Shelley represents to Mary Shelley a figure who embodies the contrasting and more startling aspects of both the Romantic Movement and the Enlightenment era. This I will demonstrate through a close examination of the text of Frankenstein and through an exploration of the figure of Percy Shelley as he is represented in the novel. The representation of Shelley is most marked in the figures of Victor and the Creature, but is not exclusively confined to them. The thesis will attempt to show that Victor and the Creature can be read as figures for the Enlightenment and the Romantic movements respectively. As several critics have noted, these fictional protagonists also represent the divergent elements of Percy Shelley’s own divided personality, as he was both a dedicated man of science and a radical Romantic poet. He is a figure who exemplifies the contrasting notions of the archetypal Enlightenment man, while simultaneously embodying the Romantic resistance to some aspects of that zeitgeist. Lately, there has been a resurgence of interest in the novel by contemporary authors, biographers and playwrights, who have responded to it in a range of literary forms. I will pay particular attention to Peter Ackroyd’s, The Casebook of Victor Frankenstein (2011), which shows that the questions Frankenstein poses to the reader are still with us today. I suggest that this is one of the main impulses behind this recent resurgence of interest in Mary Shelley’s novel. In particular, my thesis will explore the idea that the question of knowledge itself, and the scientific and moral limits which may apply to it, has a renewed urgency in early 21st century literature. In Frankenstein this is a central theme and is related to the figure of the “modern Prometheus”, which was the subtitle of Frankenstein, and which points to the ambitious figure who wishes to advance his own knowledge at all costs. I will consider this point by exploring the ways in which the tensions embodied by Percy Shelley and raised by the original novel are addressed in these contemporary texts. The renewed interest in these questions suggests that they remain pressing in our time, and continue to haunt us in our current society, not unlike the Creature in the novel.
