"A certain zest to his own enjoyment" : homoerotic competition, race, and the rise of a Southern middle class in The marrow of tradition

Wise, Rachel Ann 01 August 2011 (has links)
This essay contends that Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick's "between men" thesis (1985) provides a particularly apt methodology for engaging The marrow of tradition (1901), a post-bellum novel concerned with the structure of the New South in the United States. While the novel contains myriad "between men" pairs, reading the homosocial bond between Lee Ellis and Tom Delamere has the potential to change the way we think about the novel's interest in the complex relationships among class, social mobility, race, whiteness, and the erotics of power. If "the political and the erotic necessarily obscure and misrepresent each other... in ways that offer important and shifting affordances to all parties in historical gender and class struggles," then we can read the Ellis/Tom/Clara erotic triangle as dramatizing the rise of a white middle class whose professional capital encroaches upon and supersedes the central role of a plantation based aristocracy without significantly challenging either the essential hierarchy of white over black or the bloody lynch law that helps enforce that hierarchy (Sedgwick 15). Sedgwick's broad definition of desire as "the affective or social force, the glue, even when its manifestation is hostility or hatred, that shapes an important relationship" can usefully be applied to the rivalry between Lee Ellis and Tom Delamere, a rivalry that epitomizes the Girardian theory that "the bond between rivals in an erotic triangle [is] stronger [and] more heavily determinant of actions and choices, than anything in the bond between either of the lovers and the beloved" (Sedgwick 21). An examination of the erotic triangle and the function of the courtship plot enable us to theorize the implications of this expropriation of the aristocrat by the white southern middle class and this ascendant class's role in remaking a whiteness that at the novel's end still reigns supreme. / text

Issues of poverty and poor relief in colonial Northern Vietnam : the interaction between colonial modernism and elite Vietnamese thinking

Nguyen-Marshall, Van 11 1900 (has links)
This dissertation explores the discourses on poverty in Colonial Vietnam. Based on French-language archival material and Vietnamese-language literary and journalistic sources, the dissertation examines both the French colonial administration's and Vietnamese intellectuals' conceptualization and representation of poverty and poor relief. While both the French and Vietnamese discourses on poverty diverged in their analyses of the problem, they both vied for moral authority in the domain of poverty relief. This dissertation, therefore, contributes to the Postmodernist argument that poverty is a socially constructed concept, revealing more about the elite than the poor of whom they wrote. Within the French colonial rhetoric one justification for colonial rule was the improvement of the material condition of Indochina. Poor relief fell within the purview of the French 'civilizing' mission, the official doctrine for French Imperialism. The colonial agenda, racial prejudices, and the French administrators' own ambivalent attitudes toward the poor made any attempt at poor relief doomed for failure. While poor relief functioned as a justification for the French presence in Indochina, when wielded by Vietnamese intellectuals the discourse on poverty became a rallying call for patriotism, nationalism, and for some, anti-colonialism. In the hands of the politically conservative intellectuals poverty became a problem connected with Vietnam's 'backward' culture and society. In the 1930s as the issue of poverty became more urgent, Vietnamese journalists and novelists began to explore critically the impact of poverty on their society. Literature of this period presented a compelling argument about the corrosive effect of poverty on Vietnamese society, and it subtly implicated French colonialism in the cause of poverty. By the late 1930s, left-wing writers took the discussion further to analyze the causes of poverty. Their writings left no doubt as to their conviction that colonialism and capitalism were responsible for the impoverishment of their society. In examining the various competing discourses on poverty among elite Vietnamese writers, this dissertation shows the diversity among the elite as well as the intellectual dynamism of the period as Vietnamese intellectuals grappled with the global forces of colonialism and capitalism. While Vietnamese intellectuals exhibited a modernist faith that poverty could be eradicated, and thought of themselves as modern, their own idealized society, a van minh (civilized) society was based on Confucian values, such as social harmony and responsibility.

The British Arts and Crafts movement manifested in an American case study of Gustav Stickley's Craftsman architecture / Title from signature page: British Arts & Crafts movement manifested in an American case study of Gustav Stickley's Craftsman architecture

Rosenthal, Ashley A. January 2006 (has links)
This thesis describes how components of the British Arts and Crafts Movement crossed the Atlantic and inspired the American Gustav Stickley's Craftsman residential architecture. As part of the Movement's reaction against the Industrial Revolution, Stickley's Craftsman residences emphasized honest and simple design and the use of natural materials. My thesis identifies the expressions of Stickley's ideals in the case study of a surviving Craftsman home located in the suburb of Irvington in Indianapolis, Indiana. The case study examines the house's configuration, construction methods, original materials and ornamental motifs. This study is particularly significant because original plans and documentation are available for research. The residence has had few owners and has therefore retained most of its original features and materials. These factors make the residence an exceptional example of Craftsman architecture. / Department of Architecture

Alternative constructions of masculinity in American literary naturalism

Stryffeler, Ryan D. 29 June 2011 (has links)
This project asserts that male Naturalist authors were not “hypermasculine” acolytes of strident manhood, but instead offer alternative constructions which they portray as less traumatic and more cohesive than prevailing social notions of normative male behavior. I maintain that the rise of the concept of manhood advocated by Theodore Roosevelt in the early decades of the twentieth century contributed to this misconception, for it generated a discourse of “manly” individualism which became equated with socially acceptable performances of masculinity for many Americans. My first chapter illustrates the gradual evolution of an individualistic, violent, and strident concept of manhood, which I label “strenuous masculinity,” through the rhetoric of Theodore Roosevelt. The second chapter explores the ways in which Stephen Crane’s fiction illuminates the trauma and confusion inherent in strenuous concepts of manhood. Many of Crane’s stories, like “Five White Mice,” demonstrate the failure of individualism, while others, like “The Open Boat,” document a more positive construction of what I call “homosocial manhood.” In my third and final chapter, I attempt to prove that Richard Wright’s early texts showcase a range of possible outcomes of black male attempts to stand up to racial oppression. I document that Uncle Tom’s Children and Native Son both depict a continuum of confrontation, with individual violence on one end of the spectrum and non-violent group protest on the other. Furthermore, because individual resistance is consistently equated with the suffering and death of the protagonists, my project implies that strenuous manhood also fails to provide a site for effectual and sustainable opposition to the negating forces of racial oppression. / Theodore Roosevelt and the transformation of American masculinity -- "The youth leaned heavily on his friend" : alternative constructions of masculinity in Stephen Crane's fiction -- Richard Wright's early fiction as a rejection of the racial oppression of strenuous manhood. / Department of English

Describes situations where the conflict was observed in one of the companies in the region. From this description and theoretical research on the subject, a questionnaire is prepared which is subjected to 78 professional staff of those departments who have worked in this company and in at least one other company in this sector in the region of Campinas. These professionals were categorized from two vectors: the Department in which they work (Production, Quality or Engineering), and if they were part of the technical body (composed of Engineers, Technicians, Analysts and Technical Managers), or Staff operating body (composed of Supervisors and Operation Managers). Theoretical analysis on the topic is made taking as central axis the Sociological Theory of Conflict of Georg Simmel, for whom the conflict is positive and element constructor of social relations. The questions to be answered are related to the identification of the structural conditions of conflict, understanding if the same is seen as positive or negative by the surveyed ones, if the conflict promotes the change in the structure of the Organization, and if is contained in the observed Organization or whether it is something common to other companies in the region. The answers of the surveyed ones point out that the Department in which they work, the type of position or function, the performance appraisal system and the dynamics of information technology industry operate as structural elements of the conflict. Moreover, the organizational conflict evaluated do not presents itself as positive by tensing the structure instead of overcoming it, and do not enable the maintenance or improvement of the Organization in its positioning in the consumer market share. It is still seen by respondents as common to companies in the region. The survey responses also point to the failure of sociological theory of Simmel in analyzing the conflict in environments where it is uneventful, because it is unable to produce transformation in the social structure of the Organization, and because there are generalizations in his normative theory about the conflict that have not been verified in practice.

Ilustração brasileira (1854-1855) e a ilustração luso-brasileira (1856, 1858, 1859): uma contribuição para o estudo da imprensa literária em língua portuguesa / \'Ilustração Brasileira\' (1854-1855) and \'A Ilustração Luso-Brasileira\' (1856, 1858,1859): a contribution to the study of the literary press in Portuguese language

Benedita de Cássia Lima Sant\'Anna 12 March 2007 (has links)
This dissertation entitled \"Ilustração Brasileira (1854-1855) and A Ilustração Luso-Brasileira (1856, 1858, 1859): a contribution to the study of the literary press in Portuguese language\" was carried out to demonstrate that, in Brazil, the illustrative press began with the publication of Ilustração Brasileira, since no former publication gave such a great emphasis and special prominence to the \"illustrative model\" as the magazines at issue did, what can be confirmed by analyzing the Brazilian journals which preceded it. It was also proved that the publication of the magazine A Ilustração Luso-Brasileira (1856, 1858, 1859) followed a tradition of the ascendant Portuguese illustrative press. This dissertation also broaches the relevance of both illustrations to the study of the Portuguese and Brazilian Romantic literatures, as well as the role played by each literature in the development process of the literary and illustrative press in each of those countries, and additionally presents a separate volume of the table of contents classified according to the categories of texts published in each of those magazines.

About 60% of the risk factors of RA are related to genetic characteristics of individuals. The functional polymorphisms of the TNF gene -308 G/A andPTPN22 1858 C/T were associated with RA in several studies. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of the TNF 308 G/A polymorphism in the promoter region of the tumor necrosis factor- gene and PTPN22 1858 C/T on rheumatoid arthritisand tuberculosis patients from the Brazilian Amazon. A total of 545 individuals 205 healthy controls without arthritis and 132 individuals suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and 208 tuberculosis patients  were genotyped for these polymorphisms using a methodology based on PCR-RFLP. Rheumatoid factor, age more than 60 years old and more than 10 disease years, was found to be risk factors for systemic disease (p=0,0001). The frequency of the A allele (TNF2) in rheumatoid arthritis sufferers was not found to be significantly higher than in the controls (p=0.671; OR=1.16; confidence interval=0.59 – 2.25). However, using a logistic regression model when the patients were stratified according to whether the manifestations were preponderantly articular or systemic, there was a strong association between the TNF2 allele and the systemic disease (p=0.001; OR=4.75; confidence interval=1.82 – 12.40) as well as the use of anti-TNF immunotherapy (p=0.021; OR 2.93; confidence interval=1.15 –7.46). On the other hand, PTPN22 1858T allele was not associated with systemicdisease (p=0,071; OR=3,17; confidence interval=0.83 – 11.73), but we found association between this allele and biologic anti-TNF immunotherapy (p=0,021; OR=4.39; confidence interval=1.08 – 17.86). Moreover, there was found no association between PTPN22 15858 C/T and rheumatoid arthritis nor tuberculosis. These results suggest that the TNF2 allele is associated with the more serious forms of the disease in individuals from the Brazilian Amazon but not with a risk for developing RA.
