Sarah T. Hughes: Her Influence in Texas Politics

Justiss, Charnita Spring 12 1900 (has links)
Conservative males traditionally dominated Texas politics. In 1930, however, Sarah T. Hughes, a liberal woman from Maryland, began a spectacular career in state politics despite obstacles because of her gender and progressive ideas. First elected to the Texas Legislature in 1930, she remained active in politics for the next fifty years. Hard work, intelligence, and ability allowed her to form solid friendships with Texas's most powerful politicians. She became the first woman in Texas to hold a district judgeship, the first woman from Texas appointed to the federal bench, and the only woman to swear in a U.S. president. Hughes profoundly influenced state politics, challenging the long-standing conservative male domination. She helped to create a more diverse political field that today encompasses different ideologies and both genders.

The Significance and Impact of Women on the Rise of the Republican Party in Twentieth Century Texas

Strickland, Kristi Throne 08 1900 (has links)
During the early twentieth century, the Democratic party dominated the conservative political landscape of Texas. Through the 1920s, members of the Republican party focused on patronage and seemed content to maintain the position of minority party. A growing dissatisfaction with the liberal policies of the New Deal during the 1930s created opportunities for state Republicans to woo dissenting Democrats to their side. With a change of leadership within the state GOP after 1950, the Republicans waged serious campaigns for offices for the first time. Republican men exercised their political yearnings through leadership positions. Women, on the other hand, were shut out of the leadership ranks, and, as a consequence, they chose a traditional female strategy. They organized clubs in order to support the new leadership and rising candidates. Against formidable odds, Republican women acted as foot soldiers and worked diligently to attain their objectives. As early as 1920, Texas Republican women began to organize. In 1938 they joined the newly chartered National Federation of Republican Women. In 1955 Texas women organized the Texas Federation of Republican Women (TFRW). Working through the TFRW, the women became the catalysts that broke the Republican party from its state of inertia, and they significantly contributed to the breakdown of the one-party system in Texas. Willing to do the "shoe leather politicking" necessary for victory, women became invaluable to GOP candidates, who began their campaigns in the clubhouses of Republican women. In 1978, with the election of the first Republican governor in a century, Republicans finally brought competitive politics to Texas. By the 1990s, the GOP became the majority party in the state. Republican women were not only important to the growth of the party, they were the driving force that broke the state from the shackles of one-party rule by winning elections through grassroots efforts. This study fully recognizes the rich contribution women made to Texas politics throughout the twentieth century.

The Negro in Texas Politics, 1865-1874

Fennell, Romey 01 1900 (has links)
"The theme of this work centers around the Negro and his association with the Radical Republican party. For eight years this party controlled the state government of Texas and, the Negro's participation during this period cannot be overlooked. The Negro possessed, at this time, two valuable assets, the right of suffrage and a strength in numbers. It was through the careful coordination of these two assets that the Radicals were able to gain and maintain control of Texas politics."--Leaves iii-iv.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Madureira_JoseRafael_D.pdf: 2098968 bytes, checksum: 68591f45cb20280e08dd75fd10cec532 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2008 / Resumo: Émile Jaques-Dalcroze (1865-1950), compositor austro-suíço, é o protagonista deste estudo. / Abstract: This work presents the concepts and practices of Eurhythmics (Rythmique) as conceived by the Swiss composer Émile Jaques-Dalcroze (1865-1950). It discusses the relation of Eurhythmics with modern dance and gymnastics in Europe and in the U.S. It also stablishes a comparison between the poetic experience of Eurhythmics and the German employ of rhythm and expression gymnastics in the european totalitarism. This thesis is composed by 9 PICTURES which describe Dalcroze's exploration of the universe of dramatic arts (music, dance and theather) and gymnastics. These pictures are unfinished, and for this reason they may offer their potency to inspire future researches on the theme body-rhythmmovement- expression. The 9 pictures are preceded by a PROLOGUE and present the following approaches: 1. A biographical essay about Émile Jaques-Dalcroze; 2. A synthesis about Dalcroze's system of musical education named Eurhythmics; 3. The influences of the theories of expression by François Delsarte (1811-1871) on the creation of Eurhythmics; 4. The friendship with the cenographer Adolphe Appia (1862-1928) and the relation between Eurhythmics and the Appia's concept of "living work of art"; 5. The experience of the 1st Dalcroze's Eurhythmics Institute created at the garden-city of Hellerau (Germany); 6. The interruption of Hellerau's school activities caused by the begining of the World War I; 7. The relation between Dalcroze's Eurhythmics and the conception of Modern Dance in Eupore and in the U.S.; 8. The relation between Eurhythmics and the germany gymnastics - a special approach with the Expression-gymnastics created by Dalcroze's pupil Rudolf Bode (1881-1971); 9. The permanence of Eurhythmics at french contemporary dance with Françoise Dupuy. Annexed there is a video named "Émile Jaques-Dalcroze: Memory into Music", where it's possible to hear Dalcroze's own compositions and see some images about his personal life and work.

Pâquet, Martin 25 April 2018 (has links)

Masters No More: Abolition and Texas Planters, 1860-1890

Ivan, Adrien D. 12 1900 (has links)
This dissertation is a study of the effects of the abolition of slavery on the economic and political elite of six Texas counties between 1860 and 1890. It focuses on Austin, Brazoria, Colorado, Fort Bend, Matagorda, and Wharton Counties. These areas contain the overwhelming majority of Stephen F. Austin's "Old Three Hundred," the original American settlers of Texas. In addition to being the oldest settled region, these counties contained many of the wealthiest slaveholders within the state. This section of the state, along with the northeast along the Louisiana border, includes the highest concentration of Texas' antebellum plantations. This study asks two central questions. First, what were the effects of abolition on the fortunes of the planter class within these six counties? Did a new elite emerge as a result of the end of slavery, or, despite the liquidation of a substantial portion of their estates, did members of the former planter class sustain their economic dominance over the counties? Second, what were abolition's effects on the counties' prewar political elite, defined as the county judge? Who were in power before the war and who were in power after it? Did abolition contribute to a new kind of politician?

The 1948 States' Rights Democratic Movement in Texas

Griffin, James P. 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this paper is to examine, from a local perspective, the reaction of the southern conservative wing of the Democratic party to the liberal changes which occurred in that organization as a result of the transitional decades of the 1930s and 1940s. In particular, the study focuses on the growing sense of alienation and the eventual withdrawal of a handful of Texas Democrats from affiliation with the national body and their subsequent realignment with other dissident Dixie Democrats in the short-lived States' Rights party of 1948. This work is based essentially on the personal recollections of Texans who participated in the States' Rights movement and on those papers of the party's leaders which have survived until today.
