A emergência da hipótese do Relativismo Linguístico em Edward Sapir (1884-1939) / The emergence of the hypothesis of linguistic relativity in Edward Sapir (1884-1939)

Cunha, Adan Phelipe 22 February 2013 (has links)
This dissertation had as its objective to outline some factors related to the emergence process of reading the American anthropologist and linguist Edward Sapirs (1884- 1939) papers as one of the proponents of a set of assertions about the nature of natural languages, grouped under the label linguistic relativity, whose debate received much attention from American linguistic anthropologists, during the first half of the twentieth century. It is often said that the linguistic relativity is a hypothesis, which argues that language can shape the perception of reality, thought or culture. Since Sapirs name has been associated with Whorfs, as the label Sapir-Whorf hypothesis indicates, a term widely used today to refer to linguistic relativity, we carried out tracking of some fundamental concepts in this discussion, within the theoretical framework proposed by Sapir, as his conceptions of language, culture and thought, in order to assess the merits of its reception as a relativist. As this research was conducted under the methodology of Linguistic Historiography, we have also sought to rescue the contextual factors in which such theoretical propositions have emanated. Finally, we propose to discuss the setting of the term relativism in the author\'s theoretical horizon, aiming to provide a reading perspective fairly different from the ones proposed currently by numerous handbooks on the History of Linguistics.

Rebeca Eugênia Fernandes de Castro 29 April 2013 (has links)
When this confrontation turns into a failure to comply with juvenile court dispositions, it is necessary to understand these adolescents in order to design preventive interventions that might stop a criminal path into adult life. The present study aims to investigate the psychic functioning of a group of 30 young offenders, who were given a non-custodial sentence. These adolescents were classified in 3 groups, according to the level of lawful resistance (low, medium and high). The research was conducted in one of the Greater São Paulo Juvenile Courts, and it included interviews, psychological assessment using Rorschach Test, as well as reading prosecution files. Data from interview and prosecution files were categorized and described. The Rorschach Test results were analysed according to French (Paris School) methodology. The analysis considered quantitative aspects and it covered qualitative data from three cases, one of each group

Os significados dos 13 de maio : a abolição e o imediato pós-abolição para os trabalhadores dos engenhos da Zona da Mata Sul de Pernambuco (1884-1893) / The meaning of 13 may : abolition and the immediate post-abolition of workers for the sugar mills in the Zona da Mata Sul of Pernambuco (1884-1893)

This thesis aims to investigate the social experiences of the mills' workers in the emancipationist context of the 1880s and the immediate post-abolition. Our study discusses the breaks and lines of continuity between slavery and freedom experienced by the Lord of sugar mill and the workers of sugar cane. Among them, the poor and free population, mainly the black people and the slaves at the South Zona da Mata of the State of Pernambuco, especially between the years 1884 and 1893. To achieve this end, we make use a corpus consisting of several historical sources, such as police letter, lawsuits, newspapers, population census, memoirs and letters. At the intersection of these sources we intend to see the different meanings of Abolition, freedom and work for the characters presented in this thesis. The research showed that, throughout the years 1884-1893, the South Zona da Mata has undergone transformations promoted by the struggle to end slavery and Abolition, which changed the social and political relations in the region. At this time, of reordering of the social and labor relations, the black population sought to conquer greater autonomy and dignity, expressed by movement between towns and mills, imposing limits to the social oppression. Already the sugar mill owners, in turn, lived moments of discontentment with the loss of the old lordly prerogatives, and created strategies to control the manpower of former slaves and poor free. So, we aimed, above all, demonstrate how the experiences of slavery and abolition lived by the sugar workers influenced in complex working relationships, alliances and negotiations established on everyday and modes of claiming rights in post-abolition / Doutorado / Historia Social / Doutora em História

Charles Tomlinson Griffes's Three Preludes (1919) and Sonata for Piano (1918): A Lecture Recital, Together with Three Recitals of Selected Works

Patterson, Donald Lee 12 1900 (has links)
The lecture recital was given July 18, 1977. The lecture began with the performance of the Three Preludes and a discussion of these final works in relation to the composer's last period of composition which included the Sonata for Piano. After the biographical foundation was laid, the Sonata for Piano was detailed concerning form and compositional techniques. All works were performed from memory. In addition to the lecture recital, three public recitals were performed. The first solo recital, performed on August 11, 1975, consisted of works by Schubert and Liszt-Busoni. The second recital, a chamber recital, performed March 29, 1976, consisted of solo and chamber works of Messiaen. The final solo recital, performed on August 1, 1977, consisted of works by Clementi, Satie, and Rubinstein. All four programs were recorded on magnetic tape and are filed, along with the written version of the lecture recital, as part of the dissertation.

Valle Vera, María Lucía 25 July 2017 (has links)
Tesis

The duty of love to God: the spiritual theology of John Leadley Dagg

Longshore, Jared 27 October 2016 (has links)
ABSTRACT THE DUTY OF LOVE TO GOD: THE SPIRITUAL THEOLOGY OF JOHN LEADLEY DAGG (1794-1884) Jared Richard Longshore, Ph.D. The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2016 Chair: Dr. Tom Nettles This dissertation argues that the duty of love to God is the central theme that shaped John Dagg’s life, doctrine, and ministry. Chapter 2 defines Dagg’s concept of the duty of love to God. This chapter serves a fundamental function in the dissertation as it identifies the precise nature of the duty of love to God. Chapter 3 surveys Dagg’s writings with a view to how the duty of love to God is expressed in each of them. Chapter 4 investigates Dagg’s doctrine of God in relationship to the duty of love to God. Chapter 5 explores Dagg’s understanding of doctrine itself. This chapter explains that it is Dagg’s emphasis on doctrine as the divine communication of the Trinity that leads to his experiential theology. Chapter 6 transitions from the doctrine of God to the doctrine of man. This chapter reveals that Dagg’s focus on the duty of love to God permeates his anthropology. Chapter 7 concerns Dagg’s soteriology. Dagg’s understanding of saving grace is shaped by his understanding of the duty of love to God. Chapter 8 brings the duty of love to bear on Dagg’s ecclesiology. This chapter examines Dagg’s understanding of the local and universal church. Chapter 9 concludes the dissertation stating its significance.

Eschatology in the early church : with special reference to the theses of C.H. Dodd and M. Werner

Martin, Gordon Wood January 1971 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to set in perspective, as far as is possible, the eschatology of the Early Church. The work required for it has been undertaken in the conviction that this is a significant area of investigation. It is impossible to gain an adequate picture of Early Church life and theology, if any one facet of thought, which was important to the people of the time, is left out of consideration. It is also felt that the writers and thinkers of the early centuries stood so much closer in their thought forms to those writers who set down the words of the Scriptures, and especially of the New Testament, that what they thought is a probable indication as to how the Scriptural writers themselves thought. It also seems to be true that the Church of Jesus Christ today has little to say concerning eschatology, and when it does speak, does so with an uncertain voice. The recovery of an understanding with regard to the assumptions of hope of the Early Fathers must put Christians today in a better position to make their own assessment in the field of eschatology. The study undertaken for this thesis has presented a constant challenge to the faith and understanding of the writer. It was originally intended to take the study through to the Council of Nicaea in 325 A.D. The volume of work made this impossible, but it is believed that the conclusions reached about the development of thought up to c.250 A.D. indicates. the trend of thought up to that watershed in the Ancient Church.

Harry S. Truman: An Examination and Evaluation of His Use of Ethical Appeal in Selected Speeches from the 1948 Presidential Campaign

Shaver, Mark Daniel 08 1900 (has links)
The study begins with an overview of the 1948 political situation, followed by the evaluation of Truman's use of ethical appeal using criteria developed by Thonssen, Baird, and Braden. Each of their three constituents of ethical appeal--character, sagacity, and good will--is applied to four speeches. Results of the analysis establish that Truman utilized a strong ethical appeal during the campaign. Conclusions are that his use of ethical appeal probably had a significant effect on the voters of America. Regardless of the quality of his use of pathos or logos, a less capable use of ethical appeal would probably have had a fatal effect on his campaign.
