The study begins with an overview of the 1948 political situation, followed by the evaluation of Truman's use of ethical appeal using criteria developed by Thonssen, Baird, and Braden. Each of their three constituents of ethical appeal--character, sagacity, and good will--is applied to four speeches. Results of the analysis establish that Truman utilized a strong ethical appeal during the campaign. Conclusions are that his use of ethical appeal probably had a significant effect on the voters of America. Regardless of the quality of his use of pathos or logos, a less capable use of ethical appeal would probably have had a fatal effect on his campaign.

The topological entropy of a continuous map quantifies the amount of chaos observed in the map. In this dissertation we present computational methods which enable us to compute topological entropy for given time series data generated from a continuous map with a transitive attractor. A triangulation is constructed in order to approximate the attractor and to construct a multivalued map that approximates the dynamics of the linear interpolant on the triangulation. The methods utilize simplicial homology and in particular the Lefschetz Fixed Point Theorem to establish the existence of periodic orbits for the linear interpolant. A semiconjugacy is formed with a subshift of nite type for which the entropy can be calculated and provides a lower bound for the entropy of the linear interpolant. Esse trabalho versa sobre a questão do olhar nos terrenos da psicanálise e da arte, partindo dos efeitos produzidos no encontro com obra do pintor italiano Amedeo Modigliani. Ao buscar sentido para a representação no buraco dos olhos, presente nas pinturas do artista, tece reflexões acerca da imagem, no tocante à sua relação com o sujeito. Através da proposição utópica de interdição da imagem, sublinha a importância dessas criações que implicam outro modo de acesso à imaginação, destacando a sua função de corte, função de rasgadura que faz emergir a experiência do avesso. Ao despir a imagem do véu que lhe recobre, a angústia inquietante que irrompe nesse ato de contemplação com a imagem traz a dimensão do horror proposta por Freud (1919/2006b), desvelando a nudez do olhar. Algo da morte faz rasura na imagem, na direção do que Barthes (1980/2015) desenvolve ao situar a noção de punctum nas fotografias. Por fim, a reflexão sobre a máscara mortuária de Modigliani aponta a possibilidade de inserção da imagem na morte, reverso daquilo que o artista convoca ao se fazer a travessia das suas imagens em que algo da morte emerge lhes fazendo marca, recolocando, com isso, a questão dos limites da imagem no seu limiar com o real. / This paper approaches the matter of look in the fields of psychoanalysis and art, starting from the effects produced by the work of the Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani. Seeking meaning for the socket´s representation in the eye, present in the artist's paintings, it makes reflections about the image in the question to its relation with the subject. Through the utopian proposition of image interdiction, this work underlines the importance of these creations that imply another way of accessing the imagination, highlighting its function of cut, a function of ripeness that makes the experience of the reverse emerge. By undressing the image of the veil that covers it, the distressing anguish that breaks out in this act of imagery contemplation, it brings the dimension of horror proposed by Freud (1919/2006b), revealing the nakedness of the look. Something of death shears the image, in the direction of what Barthes (1980/2015) develops by situating the notion of punctum in photographs. Lastly, the reflection over the mortuary mask of Modigliani points to the possibility of insertion of the image into death, in reverse of what the artist convokes when crossing his images in which something of death emerges, marking them, thereby bringing about the limits of the image on its threshold with the real.

Publicación a texto completo no autorizada por el autor / Busca explicar, a través de la aparición y evolución de las comunidades de culto, la creación y desarrollo de la memoria histórica del coronel Francisco Bolognesi Cervantes entre los años de 1880 y 1908. Este rango temporal inicia con su muerte en la batalla de Arica, en junio de 1880 y finaliza con la inauguración de la Cripta de los héroes, el 8 de setiembre de 1808, lugar donde finalmente descansarán los restos del héroe. Este lapso temporal o de mediana duración como lo propone Braudel, nos permitirá describir desde las primeras manifestaciones en favor de la memoria de Bolognesi, hasta la consolidación de las mismas en monumentos a la memoria de los soldados que cayeron en la guerra de 1879, como lo que se dispuso en la Cripta de los Héroes, inaugurado en setiembre de1908. Se explica los contextos históricos en los que vislumbró la configuración de la memoria del personaje en cuestión. Se analiza las manifestaciones de reconocimiento a Bolognesi, para identificar cuáles fueron los usos simbólicos que terminaron por dotarle de todos los elementos necesarios para convertirse no solo en héroe, sino en uno de los símbolos más importantes de la guerra con Chile. Se integran los diferentes enfoques expuestos sobre la configuración de la memoria de los héroes, con la intención de producir una explicación capaz de acercarse a la objetividad histórica necesaria para este aspecto, tan importante en la identidad peruana. La hipótesis plantea que ante los estragos de la guerra con Chile y la difícil situación política de los años de posguerra, la comunidad de culto fue determinante en la composición de la memoria histórica del coronel del ejército don Francisco Bolognesi Cervantes. En ese sentido la comunidad de culto se presenta como variable independiente, ya que gracias a sus esfuerzos, el héroe podrá ser conocido y a su vez, podrá mantener vigencia en la sociedad a través del tiempo. La memoria histórica de Bolognesi se ubica como la variable dependiente, ya que su creación dependerá de los impulsos que le dé la comunidad de culto, la cual alimenta y propone en el imaginario, el recuerdo de este personaje. / Tesis
