Religious dimension, for example – a fundamental element of the genesis and structuring of Canudos – needs further studies. The wrong way with that aspect was approached by our literary tradition and even by latest intellectuals is a proof of this shortage. As a result of these perceptions, the movement of Belo Monte is still rated by many as a manifestation of "millenarianism" or "messianism", an interpretation can not be sustained from closer examination of the phenomenon. Through a conjunctural analysis of the historical period in which the Belo Monte community emerged – including social, political, economic and cultural – the study of the training and the specifics of catolicismo popular sertanejo, and finally, through a consistent examination of religious dimension of the social phenomenon in question, with this work I seek to better understand Canudos, contributing to uncover aspects of its genesis, and especially of its religiosity.

O Desenvolvimento da noção de caráter no pensamento Reich / The development of the notion of character in Reichs thought

João Rodrigo Oliveira e Silva 06 April 2001 (has links)
The research examines the development of the concept of character in Wilhelm Reichs thought. It is based upon a historical and systematic reading of the authors The impulsive character and Character analysis. At first, it presents the context in wich this concept was brought out, including a brief view of the history of characterology and a description of some uses of this notion by psychoanalysts who preceded Reich and those contemporary to him. Following that, this research reveals and discusses the different meanings that the term character had throughout the authors work. It recognizes the connection between his early reflections on character and the psychoanalytic tradition, it indicates the particularity of his thought, and finally points out the changes in the concept, according to the theoretical transitions performed by Reich.

A relação entre sensação e produção de conhecimento na obra de Wilhelm Reich / The relation between sensation and knowledge production in the work of Wilhelm Reich

Ailton Bedani 10 May 2013 (has links)
This thesis examines the laboratory, clinical therapeutic and epistemological studies that Wilhelm Reich, in the course of his work, dedicated to the subject of sensation. The following resources were consulted: a) articles, books, correspondences, diaries and transcriptions of an interview and of some of Reichs conferences; b) works of Reichs commentators; c) papers from authors that have significantly influenced Reichs research on sensorial apprehension, particularly Friedrich A. Lange, Henri Bergson, Sigmund Freud, and Richard Semon; d) studies in the fields of History of Science and Philosophy of Science that allowed the recovery of lines of investigation and epistemological positionings that have inspired the reichian reflexions on sensation. We tried to indicate four fields of research that have contributed to Reichs sensorial studies: the biological and medical sciences (such as the Protozoology and Neurology), the psychological knowledge (particularly the Psychoanalysis), a discipline created by the author himself (the Orgonomy), and the Theory of Knowledge (specially certain Neokantian tradition). Examining Reichs investigations on these fields, we tried to identify the scholars and currents of thought that have stimulated him in his research on the sensorial dimension and we tried to examine the strictly reichian propositions of clinical, experimental and epistemological content regarding sensation. It was observed that Reich shared the notion that a basic sensoriality would manifest in all living beings. We recovered the reichian thesis that elementary perceptive levels would be directly associated, in living organisms, to a singular natural force (the orgone energy), which the author believed to have discovered and objectified. We analyzed Reichs assertion that in human knowledge production, certain rudimentary perceptive functions (phylogenetically archaic) would be continuously modeled by the structure of character (a sphere built in the dialectic relationship individual-society). Finally, it was verified that Reich, transiting through different sectors of wisdom and chasing original investigative routes, tried to articulate two extreme aspects of the sensorial phenomenon: the sensation as a basic property of the living matter, and as a central ingredient of the human production of knowledge

The Religious Dimensions of William Faulkner: An Inquiry into the Dichotomy of Puritanism

Wu, John Guo Qiang 05 1900 (has links)
"The Religious Dimensions of William Faulkner: An Inquiry into the Dichotomy of Puritanism" traces a secular mode of thinking of American moral superiority and the gospel of success to its religious origins. The study shows that while the basis for American moral superiority derives from the typological correspondence between sacred history and American experience, the gospel of success results from the Puritan preoccupation with work as a virtue instead of a necessity because labor improves one's lot in this world while securing salvation in the next. By explaining how Puritanism begins as a rejection of worldliness but ends as an orgy of materialism, my study raises and addresses the paradoxical nature of the Puritan legacy: Why should the Puritan work ethic, when subverted by its logical conclusion---the gospel of success, result in the undoing of Puritan spirituality in its mission of redeeming the Old World? Furthermore, this inquiry examines the role Puritanism plays in creating the mythologies of America as the New World Garden, the white man as the American Adam, the black man as the American Ham, and the white woman as the American Eve. In the Puritan use of biblical typology, blacks and women function as the white men's servants and helpmates and, as such, have only adjunctive value to the white men's moral vision of the New Canaan and their economic pursuit of an earthly paradise. Since the racist and sexist discourse of Adamic self-creation predominates the American Dream, blacks and women become part of, rather than owner of, that dream. Basing my analysis on his three major novels, I demonstrate William Faulkner's penetrating insight into the dilemmas and ramifications of Puritanism in his critique of the American gospel of success in general and the Southern gospels of racism and sexism in particular. My conception of Puritanism in dichotomous tension, paradigmatically proposed as the American Adam turned Franklinesque self-made man, sheds new light on Faulkner's fictional characters as victims of the Puritan moral ambiguities.

A COMPARISON OF FAULKNER'S AND RULFO'S TREATMENT OF THE INTERPLAY BETWEEN REALITY AND ILLUSION IN "ABSALOM, ABSALOM!" AND "PEDRO PARAMO".

RUKAS, NIJOLE MARIJA. January 1982 (has links)
The aim of this study is not to explain Juan Rulfo in the light of William Faulkner, although the latter's influence among Spanish American writers is unquestionable. Rather, I propose to specifically examine Faulkner's Absalom, Absalom! and Rulfo's Pedro Paramo in comparative terms, since both novels are about the conflict between human desire and reality: they deal with longings, particularly those of Thomas Sutpen and Pedro Paramo, which never achieve ultimate satisfaction, in spite of these central characters' overwhelming and obsessive will to power which creates Sutpen's Hundred and Comala in the image of each protagonist. Each character tries to assume the omnipotence of a god, once his unthinking participation in the existential reality has been destroyed by chance traumatic occurrences. Comparable metamorphic organizing images exist in the two novels: a square and a circle. They represent the protagonists' conception of a protected space/world with an illusory center, born out of desire and representing an ideal which would render meaningful Sutpen's and Paramo's existence. The heart of Sutpen's dream is an heir to continue his dynasty and Paramo is haunted by the idealized Susana whom he claims to be the reason of all his actions. However, the two fabricated worlds are eventually revealed as fictions, and the centers of both structures collapse into the dust of reality. What remains of the two protagonists is only a motionless marble tombstone in a decayed plantation and a crumbled heap of stones in a moribund village. The inheritors of the two worlds are a mulatto idiot and an incestuous couple. After commenting on some critical opinions of the two novels and their protagonists, I trace the conception, the workings, and the collapse, with its consequences, of the two worlds of desire. I follow an approximately chronologial order, although the two texts are anything but chronological.

Kenneth Burke's approach to language and theory construction

Archias, Susan Dana, 1953- January 1988 (has links)
This thesis explains the "systematic" refinement of Kenneth Burke's theoretical process through his development of a theological paradigm for the dramatistic vocabulary. It describes the merging metaphysical and dialectical issues in Burke's critical thought and locates a theoretical shift in A Grammar of Motives, where Burke posits the prototype for his key term, "act." The study then interprets the formal treatment of the prototype in The Rhetoric of Religion: Studies in Logology, and demonstrates how the derived paradigm maintains and advances the convergence of metaphysics and dialectics, and how it reestablishes the interaction between language structure and usage in two types of definition or explanation (temporal-logical, narrative-tautological). This thesis also describes the purpose and functional range of Logology.

The Beneficent Characters in William Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha Novels

Bryant, Deborah N. 05 1900 (has links)
In William Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha novels, a group of characters exists who possess three common characteristics--a closeness to mankind, a realization of the tragedy in life, and a positive response to this tragedy. The term beneficent is used to describe the twenty individuals who possess these traits. The characters are divided into two broad categories. The first includes the white and black primitives who innately possess beneficent qualities. The term primitive describes the individual who exhibits three additional traits--simplicity, nonintellectualism, and closeness to nature. The second group includes characters who must learn the attributes of beneficence in the course of the novel. All the beneficent characters serve as embodiments of the optimism found in Faulkner's fiction.

A biblical analysis of Donald A. McGavran's harvest theology principle

Benkert, Todd Alan 24 October 2008 (has links)
This dissertation provides a biblical analysis of McGavran's harvest theology principle as it relates to the relationship between faithfulness in the evangelistic task and actual numerical church growth. Chapter 1 introduces the problem and outlines the research method. Chapter 2 contains a detailed explanation of harvest theology as presented by McGavran in his published works. The chapter outlines the concept of harvest theology in terms of the role of gospel messengers, the importance of strategy and effective methods, and numerical results. Chapter 3 examines the biblical text to discover the role assigned to gospel messengers. The key question for this chapter is as follows: What role, biblically, do human agents play in the evangelistic task? The role of gospel messengers is examined in the teaching and ministry of Jesus in the gospels, the book of Acts, and the Pauline epistles. Chapter 4, examines the biblical text as it pertains to the use of strategy and methods in the evangelistic task. The key question for this chapter is as follows: What, if any, strategy or method is employed in the New Testament and for what purpose? In addition, this chapter examines the concept of "receptivity" as a factor in determining evangelistic strategy. The use of strategy and methods is examined in the ministries of the Twelve and of Paul. Chapter 5, examines those biblical texts that deal with numerical results and their relationship to evangelistic activity. The key question for this chapter is as follows: What does the New Testament say concerning numerical results? This chapter examines both the records of actual numerical results as well as how the New Testament writers view numerical results. The existence and attitude toward numerical results is examined in the Gospels, Acts, and the Pauline epistles. Chapter 6 serves as the summary and conclusion of the dissertation. This chapter summarizes the findings of the previous chapters and offer an analysis of harvest theology based on those findings. Additionally, this chapter offers a theological understanding of the relationship between faithfulness and church growth. Finally, the chapter offers implications of the research for contemporary ministry. / This item is only available to students and faculty of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.
