A timely visit: the role of the Great White Fleet, naval defence and the press in the British-Australian relationship

Sanders, Frank Unknown Date (has links) (PDF)
When the Great White Fleet visited Australia in 1908 it became the focal point of an on-going test of wills between Britain and Australia. Relations between the two countries had become increasingly strained since Britain’s decision in the mid-nineteenth century to establish a new kind of relationship with its colonies. For the Australian colonies this meant moving towards independence within the Empire framework and assuming more responsibility for their own defence. This change had serious repercussions for the Australian colonies and British-Australian relations. Politically and psychologically the Australian colonies had developed an image of themselves as the inferior daughters of the superior and protective Mother Country. By changing the nature of the British-Australian colonial relationship, Britain not only challenged this Australian colonial self-image, it also heightened existing divisions among the Australian colonists. Anglo- Australian loyalists, enamoured of things British, clung to the established colonial image and remained subservient to Imperial wishes. Australian nationalists, on the other hand, tried to establish a new relationship with Britain, one in which Australian colonial concerns would have a greater voice. The work has, as its source and object, the Meio-Dia newspaper, which was published during the years 1939-1942 under the administration of Joaquim Inojosa, exponent of modernism in Pernambuco. The newspaper’s opinion has changed over the years, but distinguished itself because of its support of Nazi Germany in most of its existence, while almost all the organs of the mainstream media, then under control of the Departmento de Imprensa e Propaganda (DIP) and the Conselho Nacional de Imprensa (CNI), supported the allied cause. The research goal was to systematically analyze how, in the MeioDia newspaper, exception among Brazilian journals of the time, were made representations about the Estado Novo and the participating countries in the Second World War, themes that dominated editorials and articles of its founder and owner, Joaquim Inojosa, whose opinions varied during the publication of the paper. Thus, from a position of neutrality, adopted during 1939, the newspaper went on to attack mercilessly England and praise Germany’s regime, a stance that prevailed during the years 1940 and 1941. The change of Brazil’s position in January 1942 directly affected the journal, which again changed side and faced increasing difficulties, which eventually led to the end of its activities. The consult of the Departamento de Ordem Política e Social’s (DOPS) files revealed evidence of the newspaper’s connections with the German Embassy and German companies, and make clear that the journal and its owner were closely surveilled

_________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This research work focus on the topic of alterity, and its relation to psychoanalysis. The object of study proposed was defined by the following questions: How to discuss alterity in psychoanalysis? How to understand the concept of other, when we refer to the psychism? The Lacan´s theory was the basis for this research. The proposal was to draw a theoretical path in Lacan´s theory to identify the different concepts of others that he analyzed. The intention was to study Lacan´s three dimensions - imaginary, symbolic and real. In the dimension of imaginary the notion of small other was identified. It was understood that in the imaginary condition the other is very tied to the ego, within a relationship of similarity and ambiguity. The symbolic order is related to the language what allows the human being to become a subject. The concept of alterity in simbolyc is the great Other. In the real dimension there are two concepts of alterity: the object a, and the Other jouissance. The first one refers to a lost object. It is the object cause of desire, which does not exist. The second concept is related to the other sex. We tried to examine how each of the concepts mentioned held an opening for difference. It was noted that some concepts achieve this condition less than others. Anyway, all of them refer to a mode of alterity. Finally, if the Lacan´s theory is related to these three dimensions, the experience of alterity is part of the condition of being a subject.
