A study of the plasticity of clays and hydrated limes with Whittemore plasticimeter

Foote, Earl H. January 1937 (has links)
This project was an attempt to deter:nine haw the plasticity of clays and limes, as determined by the Whittemore Plasticimeter, varied over a range of water contents. The performance tests showed that the Plasticity Figure depends on the load applied to the shaft and on the size of the sphere. Furthermore the position of the zero-setting has an important effect on the results of a test. For one clay body, containing Tenn. Ball no. 5, there was a plastic range, at the working consistency of the clay, within which the Plasticity Figure remained constant. For another clay body, containing Challenger Ball, the Plasticity Figure decreased at a steady rate with increase in water content. For both clay bodies the one minute travel was found to be approximately proportional to the water of plasticity. The plasticimeter was found to be applicable to testing limes providing all the load was removed. Two Ohio Whites and one mason's hydrate were tested. In general, the Plasticity Figure was inversely proportional to, and the one minute travel directly proportional to the water content. The Ohio Whites required 15 per cent less water to reach the testing consistency than the ma.son's hydrate, and had Plasticity Figures, at that point, twice as great. A variety of clays were tested and Plasticity Figures obtained for both de-aired samples and those not de-aired. The results of typical tests were expressed on a flow diagram. / M.S.

The technique of plot study to determine soil losses and runoff under field conditions due to fertilizer treatment

Hicks, Reuben B. January 1937 (has links)
For the past ten years certain experiment stations have conducted studies dealing with soil and water losses under a wide range of conditions, but no study has been conducted on plots under actual field cultural conditions. These investigations have been very valuable in that they have revealed much needed information but they have added very little knowledge of plot technique under field cultural conditions. The size of the experimental plots for these studies has varied considerably from the small indoor laboratory plot to the complete watershed study. The indoor laboratory plot would exist under artificial conditions and could add little to methods and technique of the field plots, whereas the watershed investigation would take into account many factors not effecting field conditions. It is evident that a plot which would permit conduct of studies on the effect of fertilizer on soil and water losses under field conditions would be valuable. Such investigation is therefore undertaken in this thesis for a Master Degree. lt is believed that the information obtained from this investigation will have special value because it is the first of its kind to be obtained on Virginia soil and because the experiment will furnish needed data regarding the measurements of soil and water losses under the special field conditions due to fertilizer treatment. Objects In order to permit a more complete study of soil erosion and its causes some type of portable field plot is needed. Thus the objects of this investigation are as follows: (1) To develop and propose technical methods for studying soil and water losses on plots under field cultural conditions. (2) To test the practicality and usefulness of the methods developed by conducting studies on soil and water losses from plots of different fertilizer treatments. / M.S.

Crucial Instances: The Integrity of Edith Wharton's Episodic Structure

Lee, Joyce Glover 08 1900 (has links)
Edith Wharton structured her novels using a technique that relies on what she called "crucial episodes" or "illuminating incidents" to reveal theme and develop character. In Wharton's novels this technique attains a rare perfection as subject matter, circumstance, and dialogue are repeatedly connected by succeeding episodes. In addition, Wharton's fictional method allowed her to stage a series of incidents that essentially foretell the nature of a novel's outcome, creating a dramatic sense of inevitability that is often mistaken for determinism or naturalism. Wharton used the same technique throughout her career, lending strength to her published theories of fiction. The House of Mirth (1905), Ethan Frome (1911), and The Age of Innocence (1921) are representative not only of her best work, but also of her basic structural technique.

No. of bitstreams: 1 2016_dis_kcrodrigues.pdf: 1950994 bytes, checksum: bdede375bc038cf6f2f518ad5dd3cf20 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016 / Entitled "A son to the country: the construction of memory around General Tiburcio (1887-1937)", this research aims to understand the "memory work" involved in the election and promotion of this called hero of Ceará - which has developed in specific time and space. We understand that the way they elect these heroes lets see their own perspective of thinking and writing history, therefore, to look at the past. General Tibúrcio certainly was not the first or the last called hero for Ceará, however, the actions of certain groups - Ceará Historical Institute, press, Ceará Museum, militares poblications - we were noted the intention to make it a hero from Ceará who represented Ceará (part) in front (all) the country Brazil. The proposed cut is between 1887-1937, the empire ends and beginning of the Republic in Brazil, at which time the Republic was taking its first steps and sought to consolidate and legitimize. Ceará intended to have a hero who figured in the history of Brazil. We can say that his figure was promoted shortly after his death, when, in 1887, the square in the center of the city gets its name. In 1888, the monument is inagurated in the center of the square, and this whole process reported in the press, especially the newspaper "Liberator" in "Column Monument Tiburcio," written by the newspaper during 1887 and 1888. When the centenary of his birth was approaching, 1937, it took place in the magazines of Ceará Historical and Geographical Instituite, and the Historic Museum of Ceará, in 1934 and 1935, with the acquisition of "Biographical objects" and ordered paint by the director, Eusébio de Sousa. And finally, with the birth centenary commemoration with the celebration of achievement in Praca General Tiburcio and organization of a biography whose title was: General Tiburcio: Great Soldier and Thinker. This biography was organized by Eusébio de Sousa (Director of the Museum and the State Public Archives.) The sources used in the research are, in summary: Squares; Monuments; Newspapers, Biographies; Journal of Ceará Historical Institute and the collection of Ceará Museum.
