January 2016 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / This work aims to analyze and reflect the political and cultural function possessed by the Cine-Teatro Cuiabá and Goiânia, starting from the urban intervention process. In the early 1940's the state government of Mato Grosso and Goiás built the movies theaters in their capitals, buildings included in the projects of the cities modernization; in Goiânia's case, the movie theater was part of the institutional works for the new capital construction. Based on the concept of invention of tradition proposed by Eric Hobsbawm, aims to analyze the process occurred in the mentioned states as a key part for Getúlio Vargas' policy of New State, where culture poses as an intrinsic element for the modernization project of Cuiabá and Goiânia. In this context, the March to the West was an important project in order to compose the ideal of non-Indian settlement as a fundamental part of the constructed idea of progress - mainly by advertising - on the two states. Urban interventions in Cuiabá began in the late 1930's and continued until 1945 questioning the modern urban and architectural designs for a city of colonial origin. In Goiania, interventions emerged entirely by modern conceptions. The main sources of research were periodicals; plays brought up to stage on the spaces in question and also the very materiality of buildings. The objective of this work is to give a contribution to (re)think the New State period in the Brazilian Midwest, bringing up to debate the very spaces for culture in a propose of reading among the crossroads of history, architecture and theater / Mestre

Anyone Lived in a Pretty How Hell: the Rhetoric of Universality in Bessie Head

Edwards, George, Jr. 05 1900 (has links)
This dissertation approaches the work of South African/Botswanan novelist Bessie Head, especially the novel A Question of Power, as positioned within the critical framework of the postcolonial paradigm, the genius of which accommodates both African and African American literature without recourse to racial essentialism. A central problematic of postcolonial literary criticism is the ideological stance postcolonial authors adopt with respect to the ideology of the metropolis, whether on the one hand the stances they adopt are collusive, or on the other oppositional. A key contested concept is that of universality, which has been widely regarded as a witting or unwitting tool of the metropolis, having the effect of denigrating the colonial subject. It is my thesis that Bessie Head, neither entirely collusive nor oppositional, advocates an Africanist universality that paradoxically eliminates the bias implicit in metropolitan universality.

George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue (Solo Piano Version) : An Historical, Rhythmic and Harmonic Perspective, a Lecture Recital, Together with Three Recitals of Selected Works of R. Schumann, F. Liszt and Others

Innis, Steve (Stephen Gregory) 12 1900 (has links)
The evolution of twentieth century American music involves much more than the continuation of European tradition. The music of black Americans before and after the turn of the century had a profound impact on the musical sensibility of American culture in general. Additionally, the fledgling popular music publishing industry had a dramatic effect on the course of "classical" tradition. Nowhere was this more apparent than in the music of George Gershwin. Gershwin's importance in the history of American art music is undisputed. Why his music sounds the way it does is less understood. This paper considers the popular and folk genres that most influenced the young caiposer, and traces specific stylistic elements through their various popular and folk incarnations of the previous thirty years into Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue of 1924.

Invention or reflection? - tradition and orality in the works of Bessie Head

Castrillon, Gloria Ledger January 1993 (has links)
A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Arts, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts. Johannesburg, 1993. / This dissertation examines the work of Bessie Head with a view to sophisticating prevailing understandings of her texts which tend to concentrate on Head's place in a tradition of African women writers. Current critical works emphasise selected aspects, of Head's biography and assume her presentation of the 'tradition' and 'orality' of Serowe to be accurate. We argue in this dissertation that Head has constructed and manipulated concepts of 'tradition' and 'orality' in her texts to suit both her intellectual concerns and her fictional intentions. Broadly these are to present her works as the recorded history of an 'oral African' society. Head's six novels as well as aspects of her letters and interviews are examined in order to demonstrate this assertion. / AC2017

Niego Vásquez, Raquel 03 November 2016 (has links)

Gonzales Durán, Pedro de Jesús 24 August 2017 (has links)
