Uncapping the volcano : Malcolm Lowry, literary creativity, and writer's block

Sinclair, Struan January 1995 (has links)
Literary creativity and its shadow, the phenomenon popularly referred to as writer's block, have historically been accorded little attention by literary studies. In my thesis I seek to redress this oversight, illustrating my argument with reference to the creative life and works of Malcolm Lowry. I begin by arguing for a model of literary creativity that takes seriously the roles played by plans and intentions in motivating, sustaining and appropriately terminating literary creative action. I employ this model in order to provide a basis from which to clarify Lowry's own creative method. / I go on to rehearse and evaluate definitions and theories of writer's block from a variety of research paradigms. From these accounts I distill some important general features of writer's block. I argue that writer's block typically occurs as an intervention between stages of the literary creative process. / Finally, I return to detailed consideration of Lowry's creative method. I investigate three critical periods of writer's block in Lowry's later life and examine these interventions with reference to circumstantial, methodological and goal-based considerations. I conclude by drawing attention to the importance for literary studies of an accurate and comprehensive understanding of both literary creativity and writer's block.

A philosophical and theoretical analysis of African socialism with particular reference to Ghana : and the implications for political modernization

Conteh, Frank Sumana January 1974 (has links)
This dissertation attempts to analyze the concept of African Socialism particularly in Ghana under the leadership of the late Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. African Socialism is defined in various ways by contemporary African thinkers. What they all have in common is the tendency to emphasize the point that African Socialism is somehow distinctively African, rooted in African traditions, and therefore, not intrinsically related to socialism elsewhere. This crude definition will be clarified as the writer examines the various works of African Socialist leaders.Special attention will be paid to the political implications of African Socialism in Ghana during the leadership of Nkrumah. The discussion will include both his supporters and his opponents and the ultimate collapse of his regime.

The fictional universe of Manuel Rivas stands out in the Spanish literary scene among a group of writers belonging to the post-transition generation, with a recurrent theme, considered a taboo subject for most of the recent history of Spain: the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). The aim of this thesis is to reflect and to review this time of history in order to better understand it, taking into account memory and its historical and literary reality, when analyzing the literary marks in the narrative of El lápiz del carpintero.

Silva, Victor Hugo Oliveira January 2016 (has links)
Palavras-Chave: Rogério Duarte; estudo de trajetória; movimento Hare Krishna / Abstract: This master thesis aims to think about the relationship between spirituality and counterculture in Brazil during the late 1960s and early 1970. In particular we seek here to consider the way in which the spiritual quest was configured as a viable path as a way to recreate the meaning of existence for a person whose career was marked by a profound disruption. In addition, I propose here to make a reflection about the place of rationality in the design of transcendence developed by this person when he resorts to spiritual practice as a way to give meaning to their life experience. The purpose of this research seeks to carry through a study of trajectory of the intellectual, artist and thinker Rogério Duarte. Having gone through representative experiences about some of the most critical moments of his generation - as Tropicália, the CPC of UNE and the Hare Krishna Movement - Rogerio Duarte presents a path that allows us to make more complex understanding of some aspects of the specific reality Brazilian history, regarding the experience of the generation of 1960 and 1970 and its relationship with the counterculture and spirituality. This anthropological work - building on influences from areas such as history and sociology - was held mainly by intensive desk research and interviews. Keywords: Rogério Duarte; trajectory study; Hare Krishna movement
