De Roy, Layna 06 March 2024 (has links)
This study focuses on the sculptural practice of Brian Dettmer. Disarticulated, sealed prior to being carefully carved, the books at the center of the artist’s practice forego their traditional aspect and take on strange forms that relentlessly subvert the structural and esthetical proprieties of the object itself. Definitely delinquent while still bearing to this day the imprint of the first codex, these altered objects, through the survival of their fundamental quality, question the relationship we have with books in the digital age. Conflictual, oscillating, this relationship underlies the process of the artist, whose own discourse, always tightly related to his practice, sees in the book format a symptom of deep sociocultural changes. Drawing from anthropology, philosophy and sociology, this multidisciplinary study intends on revealing the pathof thought used by Dettmer in his effort to establish a dialogue between the “object-book” and the dematerialized informational environment, the latter contending the former’s claim to the guardianship of knowledge. Through a careful consideration of the artist’s commentaries, the materiality of his sculptures and the epistemological effects they induce, our study ultimately explores the encounter between these two different devices of knowledge.

Douglas Pike (1908-1974) : South Australian and Australian historian.

Calvert, John David January 2008 (has links)
Douglas Henry Pike was born in China in 1908, the second of five children, whose Australian parents were missionaries with a Protestant interdenominational faith mission, the China Inland Mission. Following graduation from an English style mission boarding school at Chefoo in northern China, Pike came to Melbourne in 1924; and from 1926 spent twelve years jackerooing on various New South Wales country properties. He returned to Melbourne in 1938, trained for the ministry in a Churches of Christ College, graduated in November 1941, married Olive Hagger and was sent to Adelaide. During pastorates at Colonel Light Gardens and Glenelg he studied at the University of Adelaide for his BA. He achieved History Honours, resigned from the ministry, taught briefly in Adelaide and at the University of Western Australia then returned to Adelaide as Reader from 1950 to 1960. Pike obtained his MA, then the D. Litt. for Paradise of Dissent, a history of South Australia. During the 1950s he wrote a series of newspaper articles, ‘Early Adelaide with the lid off’. Douglas Pike (1908-1974) South Australian and Australian Historian. In 1960 he was appointed to the Chair of History at the University of Tasmania and published his second book, Australia: The Quiet Continent. In 1964 he moved to the Australian National University and commenced his pioneering task as founding editor of the Australian Dictionary of Biography. Therefore the most significant period of his working life in history and historiography covers the years from 1948 until his sudden illness in November 1973, and death in May 1974. The Second World War at first slowed but then stimulated the teaching and writing of history in Australia. Pike commenced his university studies during the war; his research and writing followed in the post-war period. His years in academia witnessed the establishment between 1946 and 1958 of four more universities in Australia, including the ANU, where he spent the last ten years of his life. However, apart from book reviews, obituaries in newspapers and journals, biographical paragraphs and the ADB, Pike’s contribution and significance to Australian historiography has been largely neglected. My thesis is based on personal interviews and correspondence with people who knew Douglas Pike, including family members, together with archival material from the Australian National Library and the universities where Pike worked. Printed sources include newspapers, journals, and Pike’s own published writings. / http://proxy.library.adelaide.edu.au/login?url= http://library.adelaide.edu.au/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?BBID=1347424 / Thesis (M.A.) - University of Adelaide, School of History and Politics, 2008

Regionalism and conflict resolution in the Horn of Africa : the role of inter-governmental authority on development in the Sudanese civil war

Onyango, Moses January 2003 (has links)
This thesis expounds the theoretical underpinnings of problem-solving approach to conflict resolution. It also criticizes the traditional state-centric approach to conflict resolution being followed by the Inter Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in the Sudanese civil war. IGAD was initially known as Inter Governmental Authority on Drought and Desertification (IGADD), but was renamed IGAD in 1996. Its objectives were reformulated to give priority to conflict prevention, resolution, and management, and humanitarian affairs. It is stipulated in the thesis that IGAD faces problems that need attention if the Sudanese civil war is to be resolved. A key problem is that while IGAD's objectives were reformulated to give priority to conflict resolution, IGAD's management structure has remained the same. The management structure is state-centric and lacks neutrality, which is a very important ingredient in deep-rooted social conflict resolution. The management structure, which was initially based on combating drought and desertification, was not restructured to conform to the realities of a problem solving approach to conflict resolution. The committee that was formed to look into the Sudanese conflict is composed of states in dispute with Sudan. The other structural problem cited in the thesis is that the IGAD peace process is cumbersome and does not include all aggrieved parties. The meetings involve heads of state, ministers, ambassadors and other government representatives. The peace process is not inclusive of other important players such as other rebel movements. This thesis concludes that: 1. there is a need for peace keeping forces from neutral African Union (AU) member states; 2. conflict resolution specialists are deployed in the region whose main task would be to assist the belligerent groups to reach a common understanding of their problems; 3. the United Nations (UN) acts proactively to create international awareness to the Sudanese problem.

Harry Partch: And on the Seventh Day Petals Fell on Petaluma

Nicholl, Matthew James 08 1900 (has links)
Harry Partch's tuning system is an important contribution to tuning theory, and his music is original and significant. Part One of this study presents a brief biography of Partch, a discussion of his musical aesthetics (Monophony and Corporeality), and a technical summary of his tuning system. These elements are placed in historical perspective. Part Two presents a comprehensive analysis of "And on the Seventh Day Petals Fell on Petaluma," discussing the organization of formal, textural, rhythmic, linear, and tonal elements in the thirty-four "verses" of the work. Part Two concludes by showing how large-scale structure in the work is achieved through an overlay process.

Entre prodígios, murmúrios e soldados: o romance de Lídia Jorge / Among prodigies, murmurs and soldiers: Lídia Jorge\'s novel

Dunder, Mauro 29 October 2013 (has links)
Lídia Jorges work, started in 1980 with the novel O dia dos prodígios, forms one of the most significant and relevant sets of literary pieces produced in the Portuguese contemporary literature. Among short stories, plays, poems, and books for children, her ten novels so far, published between 1980 and 2011, evolve around several aspects of human nature and of the Portuguese life, especially the ones occurred after the Carnation Revolution (1974) building one of the most important overviews of the Portuguese sociopolitical evolution since then. The research project which originated this dissertation aimed to comprehend which aspects of that overview show more consistently in her novelistic writing, as well as its relation with the historical events of the country, in its democratic period (after 1974). In addition, Lidia Jorges writing presents, throughout her so-far ten novels, a reflection upon the act of writing itself and its relation with History and how it is represented in Portuguese contemporary fiction. Therefore, under the perspective of historiographic metafiction, as defined by Hutcheon (1991) and White (1995), this dissertation provides an analysis of her so-far ten novels, aiming at understanding the writers aesthetic and ideological project, how it consubstantiates and how it develops, since O dia dos prodígios and A noite das mulheres cantoras (2011). This work proposes that Lidia Jorges novels be divided into three different moments: the initial phase, made up of her first novels O dia dos prodígios (1980), O cais das merendas (1982), Notícia da cidade Silvestre (1984), and A costa dos murmúrios (1988); the second moment, in which belong A última dona (1992), O jardim sem limites (1995), and O vale da paixão (1998); and the third moment, which includes O vento assobiando nas gruas (2002), Combateremos a sombra (2007), and A noite das mulheres cantoras (2011). As foundation for developing this study, it was used the image of the needlework as metaphor for building imagery which, as a set and each one by itself, constitute a representative panel of a people, their History, and their relation with their own identity. In short, this work aims to characterize who one of the most important of the Portuguese contemporary literature is and writes.

Versões modernistas da democracia racial em movimento:- estudo sobre as tragetórias e as obras de Menotti Del Picchia e Cassiano Ricardo até 1945 / Two modernist versions of the Brazilian racial democracy : a study about Menotti Del Picchia´s and Cassiano Ricardo´s works and trajectories until 1945

Campos, Maria José 19 December 2007 (has links)
The present thesis analyzes the constitution of a discourse around the conception of the Brazilian racial democracy in the thought of two modernist authors: Menotti Del Picchia and Cassiano Ricardo. Such conception, found in the thought of authors whose works preceded Gilberto Freire´s studies, opened the way to a careful examination over the discussion about the so called \"myth of racial democracy\" in Brazil. This thesis embraces the study around this conception and, along with it, reveals its diffusion among several authors, the polysemy as a result of the plural use of the expression \"racial democracy\" and the impossibility to attribute its origin to any specific authorship. Through the intersection of the several ways the thoughts of these two authors became manifest - that is, by means of poetry, novels, works, political discourses and figurative arts - this thesis intends to question and enrich the study about the conception of racial democracy in Brazil. It does so by displacing the focus of the analysis on Gilberto Freire´s work, most currently author associated to the racial democracy theme. The study of the political essays in which Cassiano Ricardo e Menotti Del Picchia expressed their conceptions about the Brazilian racial constitution intends to interpret not only the meaning of this conception in the work of these two authors but also the ways the insertion and transmission of this discourse occurred within the context of modernist movement. The present thesis, thus, intends to recover part of the history concerning the creation of a current political discourse among brazilian intellectuals. Examining the components of the discourse and studying the action and transformation that have impact on the referred concept, this thesis relates the development of this concept to the sociobiographic trajectories of the authors who assumed and conveyed it as a peculiarity of Brazilian nationality.
