This thesis concerns itself with the conjunction of literature and politics in the work and thought of Hugh MacDiarmid and seeks to explore the nature of that conjunction: what is referred to as MacDiarmid's "political aesthetic". The thesis sets out to examine MacDiarmid's nationalism, its basis and its relevance to his writing, arguing that his theory of "National Psychology", as I term it, is central to his creative output and one important aspect of which is his imaginative embodiment of his country's "psychology" in his poetic voice: what I have called the "Representative Personality". As with his nationalism, this thesis also treats of his communism, its roots, nature and influence, and with special regard to his definition of the function of art as "the extension of consciousness" and questions the philosophical viability of his declared materialism. It argues here that, in spite of MacDiarmid's cult of the absolute and the extreme, much of the power and range of his poetry derives from his attempt to reconcile, or compromise between, philosophical idealism and dialectical materialism, and that the resultant tension deriving from his empirio-critical position is a major characteristic in his poetry. Concomitant with his empirio-criticism is the "God-building" mentality (as opposed to Solovievian "God-seeking") that he shared with many contemporaries, not least in the ranks of Lenin's Bolshevik Party. This is dealt with at some depth as is the influence of Slavophilism on his nationalism and Russo-Scottish parallelism. The thesis is, in many ways, a comparative study, and always seeks to relate important issues discussed to the relevant historical conditions and so placing MacDiarmid among British and European counterparts. It is not a blow-by-blow account of the poetry, but ranges widely through MacDiarmid's criticism as well, and attempts to define something of the intellectual and imaginative structures which gave power and ubiquity to the voice of the poet.

This lecture-recital deals with the two percussion sextets of Carlos Chavez. Each of the compositions is analyzed by examining compositional characteristics and performance problems. The selection, substitution, and construction of the necessary instruments for performance are explored. Suggestions for stage set-up are also included. The percussion ensemble has become an integral part of most high school and university percussion programs. Much of the literature composed for this medium has not become part of the standard literature. Chlvez's Toccata has obtained its place in the literature—it is one of the most often performed percussion works in the world. Although Tambuco has not yet attained the same status as Toccata, it is, nevertheless, an important contribution to the literature. An attempt is also made to identify the significance of these works by examining some of the early influences on Chavez's compositional style both from his native Mexico, and from other composers writing for percussion ensembles.

This thesis endeavors to offer a new explanation of her works from the perspective of Gilles Deleuze’s (1925-1995) philosophy. Deleuze stresses the need of innovation and becoming, which can shed new light on Hon’s innovative fiction. Hon, as a native Hong Kong writer, has won numerous awards and regional acclaim; however, discussions often focus on two negative issues: firstly, critics generally reject her new conception of family, but sympathetic with her criticism of conventional ethics and customs. Secondly, Hon’s works are usually viewed as bewildering to readers. / This study hopes to bring new insights into the study of Hon’s fiction, including Shushui-guan Sen-lin (《輸水管森林》), Ning-jing de Shou (《寧靜的獸》) , Feng-zheng Jia-zu (《風箏家族》), as well as Hui hua (《灰花》) and Feng shen (《縫身》). Conventional humanistic views suggest that the core value of a family, undoubtedly, includes love; however, under the framework of Deleuzian theory, such kind of prevailing views should not go unchecked. In Hon's fiction, family is where individual and social forces interact and as a result of which often changes its forms. Hon's family in contrast transformation differs drastically from what is conventionally conceived. El impulso inmediato para escribir esta tesis estuvo dado por los nulos resultados de la izquierda en las elecciones generales de 2006. Luego de haber estado ausente más de diez años de la escena electoral (1995 - 2006) la izquierda había recuperado su inscripción electoral y postulaba a través de estructuras partidarias propias. Los resultados fueron más que desalentadores para los izquierdistas: los tres partidos que podrían identificarse como continuación de la tradición de izquierda inmediatamente anterior obtuvieron: 0.62%, 0.47% y 0.27% respectivamente. Este proceso eleccionario ha vuelto explícita una crisis que -en términos electorales- la izquierda arrastra desde su fracaso en las elecciones de 1995 donde obtuvo apenas el 0.57% y el 1.88% de los votos para la elección presidencial y congresal respectivamente. / Tesis

Envolve o período de 1938 a 1978, no qual a atividade científica foi desem penhada com o objetivo de gerar e adaptar tecnologias que, sob determinadas condições, pudessem contribuir para elevar os índices de produtividade e bem estar social do setor agrícola. Adotou-se como modelo de análise aquele proposto por Esman e B1aise e que na literatura especializada aparece sob a denominação de Institution Building. A partir da análise desenvolvida foi possível identificar algumas fases que se caracterizavam por diferentes níveis de desempenho organizacional. As conclusões a que o presente estudo permite chegar são limitadas, mas a sua contribuição reside no estímulo a esforços posteriores de pesquisa, cuja necessidade pode ser identificada a partir deste trabalho.

The primary purpose of the study was to determine if the funding and revenue conditions which existed prior to the passage of the Tax Relief Amendment of 1978 continued after the enactment of public school finance legislation by the Sixty-Sixth and Sixty-Seventh Texas Legislatures. Analyses of four research questions were used to accomplish the purpose of the study.
