Co-variation of blood pressure and mood in the natural environment

Southard, Douglas R. January 1985 (has links)
Current clinical diagnostic procedures may lead to an V over-identification of hypertension. The lack of a comprehensive assessment may also lead to difficulty in timing cognitive-behavioral interventions to coincide with periods when blood pressure is most elevated. The goals of the current study were (a) to determine if a laboratory relaxation procedure would be capable of discriminating those individuals who generally have elevated blood pressure from those who react with increased blood pressure specifically to laboratory assessment, and (b) to identify "markers" of emotional states which would enable individuals to determine when their blood pressure was elevated. Fifty-one undergraduate students at Virginia Tech volunteered to participate in a two-hour laboratory session consisting of baseline blood pressure measurements, a relaxation procedure and a battery of psychological questionnaires assessing anger, anxiety and Type A. This was followed by a two-day self-monitoring period consisting of approximately twelve self-reports of mood state concurrent with blood pressure measured by a portable, semi-automatic monitor. Results suggested that blood pressure response to the laboratory relaxation procedure was associated with the difference between average ambulatory blood pressure and laboratory blood pressure for diastolic A blood pressure only. Anger arousal and anger expression were unrelated to either average ambulatory blood pressure or high versus low ambulatory blood pressure readings. Perceptions of the environment as hostile and demanding did discriminate between high versus low systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure readings. A cluster of negative moods discriminated between high and low systolic blood pressure readings. A cluster of moods characteristic of the Type A behavior pattern also discriminated high versus low systolic blood pressure readings as well as high versus low heart rate readings. One of the clearest findings of the study was the relationship between the type of analysis used and the probability of finding an association between psychological variables and blood pressure. In general, across subject analysis yielded fewer significant relationships than analyses emphasizing within subject variation. Exploring this further, two case studies are presented which illustrate statistical procedures for analyzing the relationship between blood pressure and mood in single case designs. / Ph. D.

A description of academic support systems in intercollegiate athletics

Gibson, Dale E. January 1985 (has links)
The effects of collegiate athletic programs have been debated by educators for decades. Although academic achievement is almost always listed as a major goal of athletic departments, there seems to be a conflict between the goals of higher education and athletics. Concerns about the balance between academics and athletics in the collegiate setting have been expressed both inside and outside the educational environment. As athletics have become an increasingly prominent part of higher education in America, athletes as a student subpopulation have become more vulnerable to academic exploitation. As a result, the need for effective academic support programs for athletes presumes the need for accurate and useful information about their educational characteristics. This research is an exploratory study which seeks to identify the major variables impacting the academic achievement of student athletes. Using Glaser and Strauss' discovery of grounded theory methods of research, thirty-two interviews were conducted with student athletes spread among six institutions. Findings identify factors and conditions which contribute to student athletes' perceptions of academic assistance. The study attempts to explain the relationship among these variables and how they facilitate or impede the academic progress of student athletes. Information from the research serves as a basis to form an integrated theoretical framework to explain how various factors affect student athletes' academic achievement. / Ed. D.

Nationalisme et racisme : analyse de dix ans de discours du Parti Québécois à l'égard des communautés minoritaires du Québec (1981- 1990)

Desrosiers, Eric K. January 1992 (has links)
How well founded are accusations of racism against Quebec nationalist? No research has been done on this question regarding contemporary Quebec. Authors who have examined the link between nationalism and racism in other contexts have disagreed about its relevance. To provide an answer, a broad and flexible definition of the concept of racism is required. This thesis analyses the content of the Parti Quebecois' political discourse concerning minority communities as reported in newspapers between 1981 to 1990. An original aspect of this research is the fact is submits its results to representatives of the Parti Quebecois and minority communities to shed different lights on the author's interpretation of his results. The research supports the conclusion that the Parti Quebecois' discourse from 1981 to 1990 was not racist. As a result, a direct link between nationalism and racism cannot be established.

The origin, evolution, and function of the myth of the white goddess in the writings of Robert Graves

Davis, Robert January 1987 (has links)
This is a study of the development of the myth of the White Goddess in the work of Robert Graves, a subject related to the wider field of the place of myth in modern culture. It begins by looking at the conditions which promoted Graves' interest in myth, principally his experience of the Great War. The responses of other writers are examined to provide a context for understanding Graves' transition from Georgianism to myth, as reflected in his early poetry, autobiography and writings on psychology. Before looking at how Graves' myth was formed, the history of the concept of myth is examined, from primitive peoples to civilized religion. Focus is centred upon the dual tendency of myth to reinforce and to undermine authority. Some of the figures behind Graves' interest in myth and anthropology are subject to scrutiny. An account of the relations between myth, literature and psychology permits the survey of Graves' gradual transition from psychological theory to mythographic speculation. The gradual emergence in his poetry of devotion to a Love Goddess can also be traced. Detailed interpretation of The White Goddess, its arguments and procedures, brings to light Graves' theories of the single poetic theme and the primitive matriarchy, both of which can then be evaluated and set in the context of his dedication to non-rational forms of thought. This leads into a close reading of Graves' major mythological poems, followed by reflections upon the myth's application in his critical writings and cultural commentaries. Finally, consideration is given to Graves' later writings, especially his attraction to Orphism and the adoption of mythic personae in his verse. The influence of the Black Goddess of Wisdom over these later works is interpreted and assessed.

A escrita da dor : testemunhos da ditadura militar / The writing of the pain : military dictatorship testimonies

Fernandes, Fabricio Flores 27 February 2008 (has links)
Orientador: Marcio O. Seligmann-Silva / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Estudos da Linguagem / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-10T20:48:51Z (GMT). The subjects of this research are the testimonial works of Luiz Roberto Salinas Fortes, Retrato calado (1988), and Flávio Tavares, Memórias do esquecimento (1999), in which the authors narrate events experienced during the years of the Brazilian military dictatorship (1964-1985), among them the torture suffered. One explores, in this work, the reasons for the accounts present some structural features such as the narrator split before the description of the extreme violence, the simulation of an interlocutor to whom the narrator speaks, the apparent impossibility of setting down the facts on a chronological order, and the repetition of words and syntactic constructs on a same period. The interpretative hypothesis one works with understands that such devices, added to the evidence that long time elapsed between the facts and the narration of them, indicate this hesitant narrator is a victim of traumatizing experiences. As a way of hypothesis validation, one broaches a series of theoretical works on the relation between the testimonial act and the suffered traumas. Furthermore, with the intent to better comprehend the accounts emergence conditions, one investigates perpetrators texts, whose visions on the events are rather opposite to the ones by the authors here studied. Finally, one minutely analyses discursive structures of Salinas¿ and Tavares¿ testimonies, calling attention to the difficulties faced in the act of writing the pain / Doutorado / Teoria e Critica Literaria / Doutor em Teoria e História Literária
