Networks and roles of Pro-Vice Chancellors : a study of the connectedness of PVCs in the 1994 group of universitiesPilbeam, Colin James January 2008 (has links)
Faced with a turbulent higher education environment senior management teams in universities seek to secure the future of their university by accessing as much information about the environment as possible, often through networks. Pro-Vice Chancellors (PVCs) are members of these teams, normally with significant responsibility for activities that are integral to the university, but very little is known about their role and the importance that connections to others might play in it. Taking a social network perspective, this thesis investigates this gap using a two stage research design. First an electronically distributed questionnaire was used to determine the connectivity between PVCs either with responsibility for research or with responsibility for teaching from the original 16 UK universities of the 1994 Group. Secondly, semistructured interviews were conducted with eight PVCs from four of these universities, to examine similarities and differences in the roles of different PVCs and the importance of connectivity for them. Network maps showed that research PVCs were cohesively linked; most were connected to at least two others, and often to many more. Conversely, PVCs with responsibility for teaching were almost wholly unconnected. Connections to other PVCs served three purposes. Occasionally they were important for personal development, otherwise they either enabled PVCs to perform her/his duties by providing information, or enhanced the performance of the university by allowing access to additional resources. It is concluded that PVCs play a boundary spanning role both internally and externally to the University. Moreover, enduring connections to other PVCs formed where opportunities existed to pursue additional resources collaboratively or when it was necessary to lobby government to protect the existing resource base from others. It was argued that these circumstances commonly occurred in the research environment but not in the teaching environment and so the observed pattern of connectivity amongst PVCs was explained.

This paper consists of the analysis of the discourse of the candidates to the government of Rio Grande do Sul state at the elections of 1994, Olívio Dutra e Antônio Britto. It aims at identifying the way both candidates address to the electorate during the :free electoral propaganda broadcast on television. The approach is focused on the definition of the crisis of the state and the need for its recovery. Such approach leads to a discourse that, on the one hand, covers administrative competence issues and, on the other hand, covers a way of governing opposite to the traditional one, defined as the" labour party way of governing". The recovery of Rio Grande do Sul is also attached to the kind of political relationship settled with the Federal Government, seen as aligning or opposing, according to each candidate's political positioning. These positions are supported by a regionalist discourse in defense of the interests of Rio Grande do Sul and a fight against the historical discrimination coming from the national political center. This paper also seeks to present the regional identity brought up by the two proposals o f relationship links with the Federal Government. The discourse held by the opposition to the center reinforces the identity of Rio Grande do Sul as a discident state whereas the discourse supporting the aligning with the Federal Government proposes, on its counterpart, a new singular regional status which would be established by the grandiosity o f the state achieved through the unity with the central government.

It's in the blood : the varieties of Linus Pauling's work on hemoglobin and sickle cell anemiaGormlet, Melinda (Melinda Brooke) 22 October 2003 (has links)
Linus Pauling incorporated hemoglobin and a disease of the blood, sickle cell
anemia, into many of his researches between the mid-1930s and mid-1970s. In the
early 1930s Pauling became interested in organic chemistry and named hemoglobin
as one of the first biochemical substances that he planned to analyze. In 1935 he
published his first paper on hemoglobin, which determined the structure of the four
hemes in hemoglobin. Pauling continued to study the structure of hemoglobin until
the early 1950s when he proposed that it was an alpha-helix. In 1945 Pauling learned
about sickle cell anemia and published an important paper in 1949 with Harvey A.
Itano, S.J. Singer, and Ibert C. Wells titled "Sickle Cell Anemia, a Molecular
Disease." Pauling investigated hemoglobin into the mid-1970s when he tried to find
an orthomolecular therapy for sickle cell anemia. From the mid-1950s to early 1970s,
Pauling also used sickle cell anemia to promote negative eugenics, point out the
possible mutagenic effects caused by nuclear weapons testing, and propose an
evolutionary theory. Additionally, in the final year of his life, Pauling wrote two
forewords for books on sickle cell anemia, which were published in 1994, the year he
died. Hemoglobin and sickle cell anemia can be considered a theme within Pauling's
work. He often returned to normal and abnormal hemoglobin as his primary
substance for examination, and his familiarity with hemoglobin and sickle cell anemia
inspired new research. / Graduation date: 2004

The Group Areas Act and Port Elizabeth's heritage: a study of memorial recollection in the South End Museum.Kadi, Palesa. January 2007 (has links)

The second half of the 1990's was marked by a significant reworking of memory and history in South Africa. WHilst the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) was involved in its hearings on amnesty applications and gross human rights violations, new museums were emerging and older ones began reshaping their displays. This thesis interrogated the changing representations of history, culture, identity and heritage in one South African city, Port Elizabeth, which in 2005 was re-named the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipal area. This discussion examined, at times, the historical era prior to South Africa's democracy and the period after the first democratic elections of 27 April 1994.

Fertility in Rwanda: Impact of genocide, an ananlysis of fertility before, during and after 1994 genocide.Basuayi, Clement Bula. January 2006 (has links)

The 20th century has witnessed several wars and genocides worldwide. Notable examples include the Armenian and Jews genocides which took place during World War I and World War II respectively. The Rwandan genocide of 1994 is a more recent example. These wars and genocides have impacted on the socio-economic and demographic transition with resounding crisis. The present study focused on the Rwandan genocide which affected households and families by reducing the fertility rate. Hence the fertility transition in Rwanda was analyzed for the period before, during and after genocide.
