Familjebilder i dansk guldålderskonst : En tolkning av tre familjeporträtt av Emilius Bærentzen, Martinus Rørbye och Wilhelm Bendz / Family portraits in the Danish Golden Age : An interpretation of three family portraits by Emilius Bærentzen, Martinus Rørbye and Wilhelm Bendz

Lennersand, Britt Marie January 2020 (has links)
The first half of the 19th century is considered the Golden Age of Danish art. It was a period with economic problems for the country and for many people. As a result new values and ideals became important with emphasis on family and work. The middle classes gained more influence and also became more interested in art. The period was not called a golden age until the end of the century, when the artistic value of the works was more recognized. Nowadays Golden Age portraits and landscape paintings are especially admired.  In this essay I have investigated three family portraits painted 1829-1830 in order to find out who the sitters were, how they were depicted and in what settings. In my view the portraits tell stories of the sitters and the way families adhered to the ideals of family life and diligence. There was a division between male and female spheres and also between private and public parts of family life. As a result he family portraits do not only show what the persons and their homes looked like, the contents of the painting becomes a story presenting them to viewers, although, perhaps, in an idealized version of reality.

En spegling av tiden : Uttryck för nationalism i svensk och dansk målarkonst ca 1850 till 1865 / A reflection of its time : Nationalism in Swedish and Danish Painting c. 1850 to 1865

Lennersand, Britt Marie January 2022 (has links)
The aim of my master’s thesis is to study how of nationalism was expressed in Swedish and Danish paintings c. 1850 to 1865. In both Sweden and Denmark there were strong feelings of nationalism in the 19th century. The development towards a modern nation state meant that people began to feel like citizens of a nation rather than subjects to a king. In the words of the Irish-American anthropologist and political scientist Benedict Anderson they had the feeling of being in an imagined community.  I examine how nationalism was expressed, what factors influenced the portrayal of national feelings and the purpose of choices of subject. The final question is if there are differences between the countries and, if any, possible reasons. The time period I have chosen is the time between the two Slesvig wars in Denmark, which is now often seen as the latter part of the Danish Golden Age. It is also the period when many Swedish painters chose to travel to Düsseldorf to study painting and the Düsseldorf school became especially important in genre and landscape painting, often with nationalistic subjects. My study is divided into four themes, Mythology, Monarchs, People and Nature, covering different aspects of life and also of different categories of painting. For each theme I examine one painting by a Swedish artist and one by a Danish artist using Panofsky’s iconological method.  I include other paintings and texts for reference.  The expression of nationalism shows similarities between the countries, such as use of old Norse mythology and genre paintings of rural people in traditional costumes. Landscape paintings reflected the geographical differences between the countries. Current events, in particular the Slesvig wars for Denmark, also left their mark on nationalism and found their way into art.

Sekelskiftets molnkonst : En ekokritisk studie av Charlotte Wahlströms molnskildringar

Händler, Frida January 2023 (has links)
This essay examines cloud depictions made by the Swedish artist Charlotte Wahlström (1849–1924) during the turn of the twentieth century. The purpose of the essay is to increase the knowledge of the works of a relatively unexplored female artist and discuss how an ecocritical perspective can bring new light to landscape painting during this period of time. The material consists of a selection of six landscape paintings with cloud motifs displayed at the exhibition Kvinnliga pionjärer – Visionära landskap at Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde in Stockholm. The analysis is based on formal aspects from Allan Ellenius’ scheme for image analysis combined with an ecocritical theoretical approach, which puts the cloud paintings in an Anthropocentric context. By painting, Wahlström positions herself to the clouds, which reflects the relation between human and nature. Wahlström’s cloud paintings tend to be seen as subjective mood paintings, on which human feelings are reflected, regardless of the stylistic depiction of the clouds. The result shows that an ecocritical focus enables an image analysis that puts the clouds and the nature in focus, free from human’s projection of her own feelings. Ecocriticism cannot, however, see beyond the fact that a painting is an artefact made by and regarded by humans, and in turn always subjective.

[en] ART AND THE MODERN SUBJECT: THE (RE)PRODUCTION OF SUBJECTIVITY IN 19TH CENTURY PAINTING / [pt] ARTE E SUJEITO MODERNO: A (RE)PRODUÇÃO DA SUBJETIVIDADE NA PINTURA DO SÉCULO XIX

DESIREE VALENTE SPESSOTE 07 April 2022 (has links)
[en] The present work intends to investigate the possible dialogues between 19th century painting and modern subjectivity, exploring how the subjective modulation of the 19th century became visible in the artistic production of the period, while also creating impact in the field of art. Starting with Michel Foucault, who teaches to question what is seen as inevitable, this research understands that the way we are and relate to the world is not natural, but historical, and that the subjective experience of the modern man, characterized by his psychological interiority , reverberates in several human productions — among which art, especially painting, occupies a special place. Without establishing direct causes and consequences, this work aims to build a relationship between painting and the ways of perceiving and experiencing the world that are produced in Modernity, investigating how the new possibilities in the artistic field can be understood both as products and as producers of a new experience of being a subject.

Viktor Barvitius (1834-1902) / Viktor Barvitius (1834-1902)

Klouzová, Aneta January 2012 (has links)
English abstract: In this my master thesis I attempt to depicture comprehensively the life-work of Viktor Barvitius (1834 - 1902), one of the Czech Pioneers of Modern Realism. Tracing the fates and influences that had formed the oeuvre of this fancier of urban turmoil helps us to figure out his positron within the kontext of period art. Barvitiuses creation embraces all main domains of painting of the time: portrayals, historical painting, genre; it has reached its peak during his stay in France between 1865 and 1867. For his immediate reaction to the French Modern Realism and together with Karel Purkyně and Soběslav Pinkas, Barvitius represents one of the prophets of the Czech Programme Realism. In 1877, Barvitius got a commission as an inspector of the SVPU Art Gallery; Czech museum culture is a great deal due to his activity on the field. Barvitiuses whole life artistic work, both theoric and practical, make him an important figure of Czech cultural history. Hooked illustration and period and later reviews make an integral part of my thesis. It also includes the list of Barvitiuses art pieces owned by Czech museums and galleries, Czech National Gallery in Prague, the art pieces that were the subjects of auction-sale and the inventory of his art work.

Výzdoba pražské obytné budovy od šedesátých let 19. století do první světové války / Decoration of Prague Residential Buildings from the sixties of the 19th Century until World War 1

Šámal, Petr January 2015 (has links)
Dissertation work called Decoration of Prague Residential Buildings from the sixties of the 19th Century until World War I is devoted to sculptures and paintings of buildings, primarily serving for residential purposes. Residential aspect in this work is chosen to express difference from public buildings. City of Prague was chosen as a place of studied buildings not just only in its contemporary range, but in the sense of later "Great Prague". The period of the time covered in this work shows Prague intensely connected through cultural, social and artistic sense.Sculptures and paintings were the key elements for public buildings in the era of Historicism, Art Nouveau and Modernism. There were two essential meanings - ornaments and its richness represented the quality of the builder, as well as its content and symbolism expressed ideas, meaning and message of the building or its institution. The sculptures and paintings to a significant extent were developed not only in public buildings but also in private, ie. entirely residential. Also, these buildings contained their messages in the ornaments. Dissertation focuses exclusively on the part of the building where the ornaments included semantic component. It was either intended to be "read" by the audience, or contained meaning so individual in...

Hrob, náhrobek, hřbitov. Okruh motivů v českém malířství 19. století / Grave, Tombstone, Graveyard. The Range of Motifs of the Czech Painting of the 19th Century

Kučerová, Anežka January 2017 (has links)
(in English) This thesis called Grave, Tombstone, Graveyard. The Range of Motifs of the Czech Painting of the 19th Century is based on the analysis of paintings, drawings and graphics made by Czech authors throughout the 19th century. Artists worked with funeral motifs in different ways and these will be presented in different case studies. Some painters were fascinated by these subjects and they turned their attention to them systematically and repeatedly throughout their career. Other artists worked with funeral motifs rarely, although significantly. Artists integrated motifs of graves, monuments and cemeteries to their pieces of art for different purposes; this was connected with the interest of Romanticism in aesthetic anomalies and mystery, with their personal experience and feelings. Artists were also interested in genre scenes that were situated in cemeteries. Funeral motifs can be found in illustrated journals as well. Their aim was to document the specific place and as to symbolically express the finality of the life. The pieces of art will be presented in the context of the burial rites and literature of the 19th century. This phenomenon was also reflected by foreign artists, some of them will be also mentioned in the thesis as an analogy to the Czech works.

El Paisaje Montañés. La pintura de paisaje en Cantabria desde una aproximación contextual y personal

Alba Rodríguez, Víctor 19 December 2022 (has links)
[EN] The present investigation deals with the painting of Landscape in the Mountain. This is how the current Autonomous Community of Cantabria was known when, in the 19th century, several artists began to paint Landscapes without having existed any precedent in the region that was ascribed to the genre. Since this social, artistic and historical milestone that led to the emergence of the modern idea of landscape, landscape painting has persisted in the field of local creation, where it has evolved influenced by the development of modern artistic ideas to the contemporary. Therefore, landscape painting has remained current in each of the subsequent periods, rejecting the idea that it could be a passing nineteenth-century fashion, thanks to the morphological conditions of the chosen geography. To demonstrate the hypothesis, in a first chapter the semantics of landscape as a concept is investigated, in a second chapter the origins of the Landscape genre in painting are investigated, from a general horizon to the defined geographical framework, and, finally, , the artistic research carried out on the idea of the Mountain Landscape is shown together with the plastic results obtained. / Alba Rodríguez, V.
