____________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / The present work is comprised, in great measure, by essays and publications that resulted from my engagement in the research group Writing: Language and Thought, whose activities are linked to the Department of Literary Theory and Literatures at the University of Brasilia, under the leadership of Professor Piero Eyben – who is also the supervisor of this thesis. Common to them all is the fact that they tread upon the thinking and literary texts of Maurice Blanchot, paying particular attention to the questions of meaning and language and their philosophical implications. Imperative is also to stress that the work presented here is a further development of my Master‘s dissertation, a research project that was undertaken in the Department of Philosophy of the same University, which was circumscribed to the essayistic work of Blanchot. The present thesis entertains a similar aspiration, this time focusing on the author‘s texts that belong to the ambivalent domain of fiction.

A critical study of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars : interests, motives, actions and the makings of a culture of violence

Tripathi, Deepak January 2012 (has links)
This submission includes two studies, based primarily on the use of historical archives, of the Afghan wars from 1978 and the Iraq War from 2003. Breeding Ground: Afghanistan and the Origins of Islamist Terrorism (2011) is a study of various layers of the Afghan conflict: the 1978 communist coup; the 1979 Soviet invasion and America’s proxy war against the Soviet occupying forces in the 1980s; and the rise of the Taliban in the 1990s. It shows how Islamist groups allied to the West against Soviet and Afghan communism turned into enemies of the United States, with consequences including the September 11, 2001 attacks, President George W. Bush’s retaliation against the Taliban in Afghanistan, and the invasion of Iraq. Overcoming the Bush Legacy in Iraq and Afghanistan (2010) is an analysis of the George W. Bush presidency in terms of its “war on terror.” The books thus study the Afghan and Iraqi conflicts in the context of United States foreign policy, with particular emphasis on the interests, actions and motives of actors in the conflicts and the interactions between internal and external actors. The central argument is that these factors contributed to the development of a “culture of violence,” defined as that “condition in which violence permeates all levels of society and becomes part of human thinking, behavior and way of life,” and how this provided space for “terrorist” groups to operate.

A response to external world scepticism

Thorpe, Joshua January 2015 (has links)
In this thesis I give a response to external world scepticism. I first argue that scepticism arises when we accept that it is an empirical question whether I am in a sceptical scenario, that is, a scenario in which my beliefs are coherent, and yet my empirical beliefs are false. The idea that it is an empirical question whether I am in a sceptical scenario gets its plausibility from the realist claim that our empirical beliefs have an objective subject matter. I then attempt to give a response to scepticism that is compatible with this realist claim. Three promising responses to scepticism are considered, but are found to be inadequate. Seeing why these responses are inadequate helps us to appreciate some of the conditions on an adequate response to scepticism. By drawing on the work of Donald Davidson I develop a response to scepticism that is compatible with the realist claim, and that meets these conditions. According to this response, when we get clear about the concept of belief we see that sceptical scenarios are a conceptual impossibility. Thus, just as it is not an empirical question whether I am a married bachelor, it is not an empirical question whether I am in a sceptical scenario, and the argument for scepticism breaks down.

A special Davidsonian theory of events

Douglas, Keith 11 1900 (has links)
What is an event? What sort of object are they? How is a given event distinguished from other events and other objects? This thesis on science oriented metaphysics will take Davidson's account of events as its starting point to answer the above questions. It will develop this conception of events into one that is consistent with the special theory of relativity by updating its notions of change, cause and property. The new concept of a proper property, a generalization of the notion of an invariant, is introduced to solve some of these metascientific problems. Other features of the work include an analysis of the Lorentz force equation as it applies to one family of cases of causation, showing that a use of cause and effect to help individuate events cannot be complete until relativistic features are built into it. I propose that the conception of a proper property will also solve this worry over the nature of causation as it affects the issues of events above. In particular, it will attempt to solve a charge of circularity which has been leveled at Davidson's account. This property analysis also has the feature that it makes the account of events which started with Davidsonian inspiration (i.e. causes and effects are intimately connected to events) more like Kim's. Kim's account of events is modified on the grounds it does not do justice to our intuitions about changes and events. / Arts, Faculty of / Philosophy, Department of / Graduate

Application of Cyclic Polarization of Aluminum 3003 Used in All-Aluminum Microchannel Heat Exchangers

Barnes, Javier 05 1900 (has links)
All-aluminum microchannel heat exchangers are designed to significantly reduce refrigerant charge requirements, weight, reduced brazed joints, and decreased potential for leakage by increasing reliability. Al 3003 alloy is corrosion resistant and can be formed, welded, and brazed but the issue with all-aluminum heat exchangers is localized corrosion (pitting) in corrosive environments. Currently, there is no universally accepted corrosion test that all coil manufacturers use to characterize their products. Electrochemical testing method of cyclic polarization was employed in this investigation and relevant parameters including electrolyte corrosive agent and its concentration, electrolyte pH, and applied potential scan rate was varied to find an optimal set of parameters. Results of cyclic polarization of Al 3003 in electrolytes containing various concentrations of NaCl were compared with those of the tests in Sea Water Acidified Accelerated Test (SWAAT) electrolyte and it is shown the SWAAT electrolyte (4.2% sea salt acidified to pH of 2.9) is by far stronger (in terms of corrosivity) than typical 3.5% NaCl solution used in most corrosion testing. Corrosion rates (g/m2yr) of Al 3003 measured in this investigation were comparable to those provided by ISO 9223 standard corresponding to C1 through CX categories. Duration of cyclic polarization test is much shorter than that of SWAAT and results obtained in this test is more reproducible compared to those of SWAAT. Scanning electron microscopy micrographs show typical pit depths of about 50 μm.

Opportunities for the Utilization of Non-traditional Species in Wood-based Component Manufacturing

McDaniel, Paul Warren 11 July 2003 (has links)
A mail survey of the US secondary wood products industry was conducted to assess the current species used and the market potential for the use of "non-traditional" species. Seven market segments within the secondary wood products industry were surveyed including the cabinet, flooring, millwork, office furniture, dimension and component, window and door, and household furniture market segments. Information from three hundred and fifty-seven was analyzed for this research. The results indicate that the secondary wood products industry is using a majority of "traditional" species to manufacture their products. For the industry as a whole, oak was the most popular species, which included the use of both red and white oak. Red oak average board footage use was calculated to be 1.3 million per year in the secondary industry. "Traditional" species for the component manufacturing segment were determined to be red oak, white oak, hard maple, cherry, ash, and soft maple. These species are being produced because of consumer demand. The component segment sells most of its products to the household furniture and cabinet market segment. Both of these markets are driven by fashion trends and what consumers view as "in-style." The component segment will be able to produce more "non-traditional" wood products when their customers (i.e., the six other market segments that were surveyed) begin to make finished goods with these species. Analysis showed that significant differences did exist between "non-traditional" species using companies and "traditional" companies on their ratings of component and component supplier attributes. Consistent supply was one attribute that was rated higher by many segments' "non-traditional" species users. The issue of supply will need to be addressed before many of these companies will be willing to use more "non-traditional" species. Within the overall secondary industry there was a significant difference between the importance that "traditional" species users placed on consistent supply and the importance that "non-traditional" species users placed on this attribute. "Non-traditional" species users were more concerned with having a consistent supply of their raw material and component products. For "non-traditional" species to be successful within the secondary wood products industry, a proven supply line must first be established. There is a potential to use "non-traditional" species in all of the markets that were surveyed. The millwork segment displays the most potential. This market segment already uses a wide variety of wood species, which shows there is no dominate species that is desired. The office furniture market segment also displays potential for "non-traditional" species. This segment desires a low priced raw material and "non-traditional" species can fulfill that need. / Master of Science

Venting Optimization of a Pulse Detonation Engine

Guzik, Stephen Michael Jan 11 April 2018 (has links)
A one-dimensional method-of-characteristics (MOC) code was developed to examine the venting of pulse detonation engines. Comparison with experimental results and twodimensional computational fluid dynamics demonstrates that a reasonably accurate level of simulation can be achieved with a single spatial dimension. A semi-empirical, deflagrative, flame-acceleration model was also constructed and compared to experimental results. While the results were promising, they were not sufficiently accurate to allow for modelling of deflagration-to-detonation transition. Several configurations were then examined with the MOC code to determine which parameters optimized the venting of the exhaust gases. The parameters varied were the location of detonation initiation, the filling velocity, and the distribution of reactants (partial fills). Each configuration was also simulated with a practical, fixed-geometry nozzle that was optimized, and a theoretical, variable-geometry nozzle. The results indicate that a variable nozzle increases the impulse by less than 15 % over a configuration with no nozzle. The impulse gain from a fixed nozzle is about half that of a variable nozzle, with a corresponding decrease in average thrust. For quiescent initial conditions, the differences in impulse between detonations initiated at the closed head and the open tail are negligible, although tail-initiated detonations consistently provided faster blow-down times. With increased filling velocity, tail initiated detonations provide several benefits. These include a smaller decrease in specific impulse, a larger increase in average thrust, a longer cycle time, and better performance with a fixed nozzle. Simulations with partial fills showed that they do not replace nozzles in recovering losses. For fixed nozzles, the partial-fill length can be as much as half the total length of the tube before the average thrust begins to decrease significantly.
