Modelling Pure Thorium Bundle Implementation in the CANDU-6 Reactor

Yee, Shaun Sia Ho 11 1900 (has links)
Fuels comprised of the element thorium have become increasingly popular with researchers and the public as the next generation fuel due to its ability to produce its own fissile element (U-233) and generate lower concentrations of heavy actinides. The use of thorium can possibly lead to a self-sustaining cycle whereby the addition of fissile material is not required and that the fuel can breed sufficient amounts of U-233 for a continuous supply. Research into thorium use in CANDU reactors has mainly been focused on using driver elements such as U-235 or Pu-239 to initiate the nuclear reaction by taking advantage of bundle design or by mixing the thorium and driver fuel together; however, these methods have added complexities and may not lead to a pure thorium fuel cycle, but extend the life of current nuclear fuels used. This thesis will investigate a simpler means of utilizing thorium for the intent of breeding U-233 through the use of pure thorium bundles in a once-through cycle by the ways of a heterogeneous core loading in a CANDU-6 reactor model. A 3x3 multi-cell model using DRAGON 3.06K will simulate the dual fuel model by having the centre lattice enclosing the thorium bundle and the outer eight lattices enclosing the enriched uranium bundles as the driver fuel. Next, the diffusion code DONJON 3.02E is used to produce time-average, instantaneous, and initial startup full-core simulations. As well, a brief look at the refuelling operations on the thorium channels will be done. The presence of a thorium bundle places a negative reactivity load on the multi-cell, but causes a positive insertion of reactivity for a coolant void and shutdown scenario. In the full-core modelling, the final core configuration chosen shows that thorium channels should be located in the inner core rather than in the most outer channels to produce a flattening effect on the radial profile. Thorium channels will require a combination of SEU and thorium bundles in an attempt to maintain channel power levels. Specifically, the use of 4, 6, or 8 Th bundles were investigated. The most optimal core performance shown has a radial form factor of 0.816, a total average core burnup of 18.32 GWd/t, and operates within designed power limits. It is possible to implement pure thorium bundles into a reactor set in a dual fuel mode. A careful consideration of where thorium bundles should be located in the core can help flatten the radial power distribution and help the reactor operate within the operating licensing parameters without the use of adjuster rods while breeding U-233 for a future thorium fuel cycle. / Thesis / Master of Applied Science (MASc)

Kostnadseffektiv enhet för fjärrövervakning av inbyggda system

Byström, Henrik, Rickardsson, Filip January 2013 (has links)
Companies can have production plants in a variety of locations around the world. The industrial equipment used in facilities often includes some form of built-in systems which require maintenance or monitoring at regular intervals. The equipment can be technologically advanced and therefore maintenance must be performed by a service technician. Smaller suppliers of industrial equipment are not always able to have service departments in each country, which often means an additional cost. It would therefore be advantageous with an additional communication system that acts as an intermediary between the service technician and the target system that can be located in different places. The communication system developed in this project acts as a kind of remote monitoring where it is possible to perform remote reading, and change different settings remotely. The purpose of this study is therefore to develop a simple and cost effective device designed for remote monitoring of equipment containing embedded systems. The study resulted in a cost-effective prototype, based on the single board computer Raspberry Pi, of a monitoring device that can be connected to a target system when service is needed. The communication system was tested throughout the project on a target system based on the single board computer Arduino Uno. The monitoring unit is able to communicate with the target system via three different ways: RS-232, JTAG and communication via GPIO-pins. These communication methods can be used for different purposes as these communication methods are useful for various applications and can thus enable implementation of many different functions. The communication methods are also widely used and suitable for many different target systems. Service technicians have two available user interfaces for interacting with the monitoring unit. The primary user interface is a web interface where the output of the target system can be monitored and that there is the possibility to set different settings. The second interface is remote controlling of the monitoring device which has functions to perform debugging and the ability to flash a new program into the target system.

INTEGRATING A GROUND WEATHER DATA ACQUISITION SYSTEM AND AN AIRBORNE DATA ACQUISITION SYSTEM

MacDougall, Christopher 10 1900 (has links)
International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 27-30, 1997 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / During engine and airfield performance testing it is often necessary to acquire weather data at the airfield where the test is being conducted. The airborne data acquisition system (DAS) acquires data associated with flight parameters. A separate system records airport weather conditions. Many times the separate system is an Automated Terminal Information Service (ATIS) or the ground crew relaying wind speed, wind direction and temperature from a weather station. To improve this system, the weather station is designed to acquire and store the data in memory. Utilizing a second DAS that is remote to the airborne DAS poses several problems. First, it is undesirable to have many different data acquisition systems from which to process data. The problem then develops into one of integrating the ground weather DAS with the existing airborne DAS. Other problems of system integrity, compatibility and FCC licensing exist. Complete system integration while maintaining integrity and compatibility is overcome by controlling signal format, flow and timing and is discussed in detail. Further discussion of the issue of transmission is overcome by a technique called spread-spectrum and is used in accordance with FCC rules and regulations.

Bluetooth Communication For Remote Controlling Purpose / Bluetooth-kommunikation för fjärrstyrningsändamål

Florén, Johan, Lindberg, Daniel January 2004 (has links)

The concept of remote controlling electrical devices is not new; people of today are used to being able to control their household electronic items without making an effort to walk up to the device.

In this thesis the aim is to use Bluetooth radio signals instead of the traditional infrared light to achieve the remote control functions. As a test application a Sony Compact Disc player is modified in order to be radio controlled with a standard Ericsson T39 mobile phone used as a remote. Since the test application is rather simple without any special requirements the development of a specific radio communication system has not been considered. Instead available pre-manufactured devices were examined. A Bluetooth evaluation kit was purchased and the test project consisted of the goal of linking the evaluation board to the CD player with an AVR microcontroller and getting the whole system to communicate with the mobile phone.
