Early astronomical records of comets, supernovae, novae, sunspots and aurorae from Far Eastern dynastic histories together with records from Babylonians cuneiform tablets are compiled and analysed. The present investigation gives new insight into the three following topics in current astronomy and astrophysics.(1) Halley's Comet Past orbits of Halley's Comet since 240 BC are studied in detail using mainly early Chinese observations. The date of perihelion passages are deduced for each return. The only gap in the Chinese records, for the return of 164 BC, is now filled by the discovery of two records on Babylonian tablets. This discovery improves the date of perihelion, which is established as within one week of Nov 16 in 164 BC. We are now confident that every return of Halley's Comet from 240 BC onwards has been recorded.(2) Supernovae and Novae A catalogue of historical supernovae and novae is compiled. Descriptions regarding the position of the eight well known supemovae SN 185, 386, 393, 1006, 1054, 1181, 1572 and 1604 are re-evaluated in term of recent studies. The spurious supernova SN 1408 is discussed in detail and found that there is insufficient evidence supporting a supernova interpretation. The positions of 26 well recorded historical novae are discussed in depth and their coordinates are deduced. (3) Solar Variability Catalogues of naked-eye sunspots and aurorae are compiled from Far Eastern sources. Analysis of these records suggests an average period of about 10 years for the basic solar cycle. Observational factors such as variation with the phases of the Moon are also discussed. A comparison of these data with other proxy indicators like (^14)C and (^10)Beshows a similar trend in the behaviour of the Sun over the last two thousand years.

Στη παρούσα εργασία θα εφαρμόσουμε τρεις διαφορετικές τεχνικές που μπορούν να χρησιμοποιηθούν στην περίπτωση του καρκίνου του πνεύμονα στα πλαίσια της σύμμορφης θεραπείας. Πιο συγκεκριμένα θα γίνει σύγκριση των τεχνικών που αφορούν την εισαγωγή δύο πεδίων και τριών πεδίων. Στη περίπτωση των τριών πεδίων το τρίτο πεδίο στη μία τεχνική θα έχει μικρή βαρύτητα και στην άλλη τεχνική θα έχει μεγάλη βαρύτητα. Το σύστημα πλάνου θεραπείας που θα χρησιμοποιηθεί είναι το Εclipse. Αναλυτικότερα μετά την πραγματοποίηση των πλάνων θεραπείας για 51 ασθενείς θα μελετηθούν οι δόσεις που παίρνουν οι όγκοι καθώς επίσης και οι δόσεις που λαμβάνουν οι υγιείς ιστοί με τη βοήθεια των κατάλληλων διαγραμμάτων (DVH). Εκτός από αυτή τη παράμετρο θα αναλύσουμε το ποσοστό κάλυψης του όγκου. Τέλος θα γίνει η καταγραφή των αποτελεσμάτων και με τη βοήθεια της στατιστικής ανάλυση τους ,αλλά και αναλυτικής μελέτης των τιμών που θα προκύψουν από τα πλάνα θεραπείας των ασθενών, θα προχωρήσουμε στην διεξαγωγή των συμπερασμάτων για αυτές τις τεχνικές ακτινοβόλησης. / The aim of this study is the application of three different 3D conformal techniques which are used in the treatment of the lung cancer. Specifically, a comparison between these techniques is attempted. In the case in which three fields are used, in one case the third field has a low weight, but in the other case a high weight. The treatment planning system used for this study is the “Eclipse”. In more detail, after collecting the treatment plannings of 51 patients, a study of the doses absorbed by both the tumors and the health tissues is done through DVH. The percentage of coverage of PTV is further studied. Finally, all results, including those coming out of treatment plannings, are recorded and submitted to statistical analysis, and conclusions are reached about the efficacy of those radiation techniques.

In the early centuries of Christianity every Christian writer even from New Testament times attempted in his own way to come to terms with the apparent opposition inherent in the confrontation of Christianity and classical thought. The inspired word of God in Sacred Scripture revealed to man the way, the truth and the life of his salvation, to which he had no access except through this revelation which was to be gained only through faith. What need, then, was there that man possessing this faith should turn to pagan thought? Speculation, no matter how deeply concerned with the quest for truth, could add nothing to what God had already revealed. [...]

This study has set out to highlight and investigate the contributions, to the Afrikaans literature, by writers of ""Colour"", as marginalized writers, especially after 1990. It must be indicated that a special place in the thesis, chapter five, has been devoted to the female writer of ""Colour"", EKM Dido, and the invaluable contributions she has made to Afrikaans literature. This chapter deals exclusively with all Dido's novels to date, and includes detailed discussions and analysis of important issues and aspects in the said novels. The thesis has focused on various ""Coloured"" writers, both male and female, and their contributions. The fact that naming and terms denoted to and used for various racial groupings are such thorny in South African society, terminology used to refer to these writers of ""Colour"" in this thesis initially seemed to pose a problem, but motivating the use of certain terms, to highlight and not relegate to the margins, solved this problem I believe.
