Pinched bellies and a hell of a fight : the battle at Brawner Farm / Battle at Brawner FarmGaff, Alan D. January 1980 (has links)
This thesis examined the movements of Rufus King's Federal division during a portion of the Second Manassas Campaign. With an emphasis on the role of John Gibbon's brigade, this study concentrated on the battle fought on the evening of August 28, 1862 near Groveton, Virginia between King's division and two Confederate divisions under Stonewall Jackson. Events leading up to file battle, poor cooperation between the Union generals and the faulty deployment by Jackson were stressed, as was the severity of the fighting.The withdrawal of King's division following the battle was portrayed as an important strategic error which allowed the two wings of the Confederate army to unite the following day. Although the Union troops fought Jackson's larger force to a draw, poor leadership by the Union generals resulted in tide loss of the advantages gained by the fighting. The Battle at Brawner Farm was an important event in the campaign, although it has generally been overlooked by historians.

INVESTIGATION OF PHANEROCHAETE CHRYSOSPORIUM AND CLOSTRIDIUM THERMOCELLUM FOR IMPROVED SACCHARIFICATION OF LIGNOCELLULOSE UNDER NONSTERILE CONDITIONSSimon, William E. 01 January 2015 (has links)
Current research efforts are directed at developing competitive processes that can utilize lignocellulose as a feedstock for biorefineries. The purpose of this study was to investigate methods of processing lignocellulosic material so that its monosacharides can be more easily accessed for fermentation, the lack of which is hindering the economics and widescale adoption of lignocellulosic biorefining. The monosaccharides are of interest because they can be used by Clostridium beijerinckii downstream of P. chrysosporium and C. thermocellum in a sequential bioprocess to produce butanol. Butanol is an attractive biofuel because it can be utilized without modifying current transportation infrastructure. Butanol is also used as a starting material in organic synthesis. In the first study, the potential for C. thermocellum' s (ATCC 27405) cellulase system to operate outside its optimal temperature range in a high-solids environments was assessed by quantification of the fermentation products lactate, acetate, and ethanol and by quantification of xylose, glucose, and cellobiose remaining. Additionally, the lignin degrading white-rot fungus Phanerochaete chrysosporium RP 78 was investigated as a potential pretreatment for lignocellulose. Elevated temperatures required for Clostridium thermocellum fermentation were examined as a means to improve poor competiveness that is characteristic of P. chrysosporium on unsterile corn stover substrate.

儒家政治正當性觀念發展研究: 從孔子到董仲舒= Confucian ideas of political legitimacy: from Confucius to Dong Zhongshu屈永剛, 12 August 2014 (has links)
一定歷史時期的正當性觀念反映了對應時期的社會價值規範。中國古代在西周之後的普遍共識是權力源自天命。本文以「天人關係」的發展為線索,以孔孟荀正當性觀念為軸,上溯西周時期「天命有德」觀念的興起,下及西漢初期董仲舒的「天人感應」理論,系統梳理了西漢初期以前儒家正當性觀念的發展。 西周之後,「血緣」與「德」成為能否享有天命的兩個影響因素。孔子在尊重世襲權力正當性的同時,通過「正名論」強調世襲君主既然享有君之名,就應該行君之實,對君主權力的道德基礎提出了要求。其對「仁」進行了重新詮釋,使得人本原存在的道德性被揭示出來,由此樹立了道德的主體性。同時通過對「仁」作為禮之質的說明,將「禮」作為一種外在制度和規範轉化為個體內在本質的實現。由此君主作為道德個體,權力的使用應該以「仁」為基礎。孟子則在孔子「仁」論的基礎上,進一步由「仁」而「仁義」並舉。通過性善論和「天人一貫」的哲學認識,將天道與人道貫通,為民意乃是天意奠定了理論基礎。君主需要以「仁義」為基礎,實行「德政」,才能獲得民心,從而享有天下。荀子不再從道德主體的價值自覺著手,而是通過對君主制的正當性論證,間接為處於君主制頂端的君主權力的正當性進行證明。董仲舒則在論證天的神聖性和道德性基礎上重新樹立了天的至高權威,通過「天人感應」來「假天以伸民」,對君主權力的道德基礎進行規範。 本文第一章介紹論文的研究主題和範圍、意義以及研究現狀,進而交待本文研究方法和論文章節安排。第二章:分析儒家天命觀的興起及其內涵。第三、四、五章則以孔孟荀為代表,來討論早期儒家的政治正當性觀念。第六章:分析「天人感應」與董仲舒的政治正當性思想。第七章:結語。對全文進行回顧和總結,檢討論文的成果。

The motif of hastening the Lord's coming: 2 Peter 3:1-13 and its alleged parallels and
background is a study of an aspect of 2 Peter's message and the problems related to that
aspect. The study consists of seven chapters. Chapter one is an orientative survey of
2 Peter research defining and describing the nature and scope of the problems which are
investigated in later chapters, as well as indicating the importance of the study and its
general outline. In chapter two, broad hermeneutical issues which influence the
investigation in chapters three, four, five and six are highlighted. Chapter three
investigates the use and meanings of a1fe 6 6 <.t> derivatives in the New Testament and finds
out that apart from 2 Peter, those concerned are generally not explicitly used in
association with Christ's Parousia. In chapter four, relevant sections of 2 Peter are
exegeted to determine this motifs role and meaning within the message of 2 Peter.
Chapter four's investigation finds out that this salient motif in 2 Peter emphasises the
Christian community's role of being God's important partner in the achievement of the
eschatological promises associated with Christ's Parousia. Chapter five then studies
alleged parallels of this motif in the New Testament outside of 2 Peter and finds out that
the ideas, which 2 Peter expressed through this motif are echoed within most of the
passages. In chapter six the religious background of 2 Peter is investigated and it is
discovered that ideas expressed through this motif in 2 Peter appear to be generally in
discontinuity with those contained in the investigated backgrounds. The final chapter
highlights the contemporary relevance of the study with reference to (i) New Testament
study in general, (ii) 2 Peter research in particular; and (iii) the calling and

Estadual Paulista, Campus de Presidente Prudente, teve por objetivo investigar quais as contribuições da Webquest “Viajando nas Obras de Arte” no ensino de formas geométricas para crianças do 2º ano do Ensino Fundamental. Assim, situa-se no bojo da Educação Matemática, e sua relevância está em contribuir para ampliar a compreensão sobre o uso do computador na aprendizagem matemática de alunos de 6 a 8 anos. Trata-se de uma pesquisa intervenção, desenvolvida com 12 alunos do 2º. ano do Ensino Fundamental, na faixa etária de 6 a 8 anos, do Colégio de Aplicação João XXIII da Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (UFJF), da cidade de Juiz de Fora (MG). Os dados, coletados por meio de observações, produções dos alunos, bem como fotos e vídeos, apontaram que somente a atividade Webquest “Viajando nas obras de Arte” não propiciou que a criança dessa faixa etária vivenciasse os quatro processos que devem estar presentes e articulados no ensino de Geometria, a saber, percepção, construção, representação e concepção. Com ela, conseguimos trabalhar a percepção e habilidades para visualizar as formas geométricas. No entanto, a Webquest não viabilizou a construção e a representação dessas formas. Contemplamos os outros processos com as demais atividades desenvolvidas, uso de material concreto, planificação, produção de desenhos e de narrativas. Com essas últimas, os alunos perceberam, construíram e representaram as formas, e iniciaram a sistematização conceitual... / This paper, developed in the context of the Practices and formative processes in Education research line, from the Pos-graduate Program in Education - Masters Degree of Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia, UNESP – Univ. Estadual Paulista, Presidente Prudente Campus, aimed at investigating which attributions of the Traveling with Works of Art Webquest in the teaching of geometric shapes for children from 2nd year of elementary school. Thus, is situated in the midst of Mathematics Education and its relevance lies in the contribution to broaden the comprehension about the use of the computer in the process of learning mathematic of students from 6 to 8 years. Is is an intervention research, which was carried out with 12 students from the 2nd year of the elementary school, aged 6 to 8 years, of the Colégio de Aplicação João XXIII, at the Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (UFJF), in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais state, Brazil. The data, collected through observation, the students' work, as well as photos and videos, pointed that the Webquest alone did not provide the kid of this age with the opportunity to experience the four processes which ought to be present and to be articulated in the teaching of Geometry, which are, perception, construction, representation and conception. Through this, we were able to work the perception and the ability to visualize geometrical shapes. However, the Webquest did not enable the construction and representation of these shapes. We have approached the other processes with the other activities carried out. The use of real materials, planification, drawings and narratives.
