Design, Fabrication and Application of Polymeric Porous Media / Conception, Fabrication et Application de Milieux Poreux Polymériques

Li, Yajie 09 March 2018 (has links)
Due to the combination of the advantages of porous media and polymer materials, polymeric porous media possess the properties of controllable porous structure, easily modifiable surface properties, good chemical stability, etc., which make them applicable in a wide range of industrial fields, including adsorption, battery separator, catalyst carrier, filter, energy storage, etc. Although there exist various preparation methods, such as template technique, emulsion method, phase separation method, foaming process, electrospinning, top-down lithographic techniques, breath figure method, etc., the large-scale preparation of polymeric porous media with controllable pore structures and specified functions is still a long-term goal in this field, which is one of the core objectives of this thesis. Therefore, in the first part of the thesis, polymeric porous media are firstly designed based on the specific application requirements. Then the designed polymeric porous media are prepared by the combination of multilayer coextrusion and traditional preparation methods (template technique, phase separation method). This combined preparation method has integrated the advantages of the multilayer coextrusion (continuous process, economic pathway for large-scale fabrication, flexibility of the polymer species, and tunable layer structures) and the template/phase separation method (simple preparation process and tunable pore structure). Afterwards, the applications of the polymeric porous media in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons adsorption and lithium-ion battery separator have been investigated.More importantly, in the second part of the thesis, numerical simulations of particle transport and deposition in porous media are carried out to explore the mechanisms that form the theoretical basis for the above applications (adsorption, separation, etc.). Transport and deposition of colloidal particles in porous media are of vital important in other applications such as aquifer remediation, fouling of surfaces, and therapeutic drug delivery. Therefore, it is quite worthy to have a thorough understanding of these processes as well as the dominant mechanisms involved. In this part, the microscale simulations of colloidal particle transport and deposition in porous media are achieved by a novel colloidal particle tracking model, called 3D-PTPO (Three-Dimensional Particle Tracking model by Python® and OpenFOAM®) code. The particles are considered as a mass point during transport in the flow and their volume is reconstructed when they are deposited. The main feature of the code is to take into account the modification of the pore structure and thus the flow streamlines due to deposit. Numerical simulations were firstly carried out in a capillary tube considered as an element of an idealized porous medium composed of capillaries of circular cross sections to revisit the work of Lopez and co-authors by considering a more realistic 3D geometry and also to get the most relevant quantities by capturing the physics underlying the process. Then microscale simulation is approached by representing the elementary pore structure as a capillary tube with converging/diverging geometries (tapered pipe and venturi tube) to explore the influence of the pore geometry and the particle Péclet number (Pe) on particle deposition. Finally, the coupled effects of surface chemical heterogeneity and hydrodynamics on particle deposition in porous media were investigated in a three-dimensional capillary with periodically repeating chemically heterogeneous surfaces.

[en] VOLUME VISUALIZATION OF HORIZONS IN 3-D SEISMIC DATA / [pt] VISUALIZAÇÃO VOLUMÉTRICA DE HORIZONTES EM DADOS SÍSMICOS 3D

PEDRO MARIO CRUZ E SILVA 10 January 2005 (has links)
[en] This work presents aspects of volume visualization of seismic horizons in 3-D seismic data. We consider both the direct and indirect approaches of volume visualization. In the direct approach we investigate the problem of selecting horizons using transfer functions. We present the 2-D opacity technique, which seeks to increase the ability to select horizons for visualization. We compare the use of instantaneous phase, adjusted phase and unwrapped phase as the second dimension, while seismic amplitude is the first dimension. Also in the direct approach, we show that the seismic amplitude gradient is not a good approximation for the normal vectors in seismic horizons. We suggest the gradient of instantaneous phase as a solution to this problem. In the indirect volume visualization approach we introduce a new optimization model to overcome the seismic horizon tracking problem. We present a heuristic method based on a greedy strategy to find solutions that are good approximations of the horizon of interest, even for complex geological structures.

Residual stresses and surface integrity analysis after hard turning process of case hardened steel ABNT 8620.

Farias, Adalto de 31 March 2009 (has links)
The aim of the present work is to provide relevant information regarding the obtained surface integrity during hard turning process of mechanical components manufactured from case hardened steel ABNT 8620 (DIN 21 NiCrMo 2). The sample residual stress analysis has been experimentally conducted by the incremental Blind Hole method, in which a small hole is machined on the surface of the component and the relieved deformation is recorded through special strain gages, and by the X-ray diffraction technique. The surface was examined by parameters obtained from the surface topography three-dimensional mapping with a laser interferometer instrument. The selected roughness parameters analysis intends to have a functional characterization such as bearing capacity, fluid and lubricants retention ability and contact wear resistance. In the search for altered material layers beneath the surface, metallographic studies were carried out. The functional bearing area curve analysis parameters indicated that the resulting surface has a good area contact, good bearing capacity and reasonable ability to fluid retention as the reduced valley depth parameter did not produced negative values for all conditions tested. The hard turnig process was able to add compression residual stress condition at the surface, and no significant changes were found at the case hardened layer due to rapid heating and cooling imposed by the hard turning process.

Transmedia STEM Intervention Book in Middle School for Educational Change

Stansell, Alicia 05 1900 (has links)
The world is becoming a global place in which science, technology, engineering and mathematics hold a key to a successful future. To help secure this future it is important to engage students early with relevant curriculum that sparks interest and success in STEM fields. However, education reform occurs slowly, so this paper looked at a potential paradigm that can help to bring about change in a middle school environment that harnesses the long standing strengths of learning and education with the integration of technology to create changes in the pedagogy of learners and teachers. The study implemented a transmedia STEM book and evaluated the impact it had on student perceptions of STEM, school attitude, academic achievement, and preferred activity types, providing an example vehicle for change that can be adopted over time. The main findings showed that students who used a 3-Dimensional printer had higher math achievement and a more positive perception of math.

Modélisation et simulation 3D de la rupture des polymères amorphes / Modelling and numerical study of 3D effect on glassy polymer fracture

Guo, Shu 08 July 2013 (has links)
We investigate 3D effect of crack tip palsticity and the influence of the thickness on 3D glassy polymer fracture. The characteristuc constitutive law with a viscoplastic yield stress followed by softening and progressive hardening is accoutne for and implemented in a UMAt routine, in abaqus. The crack tip fields are investigated and 2D plasne strain versus 3D calculations compared. Qualitatively, the palstic distribution are comparableas soon as the ratio thickness over crack tip radius is larger than 20. However, the 2D calculations over estimate the stress distribution compared to the 3D cases. We have accounted for failure by crazing that is described with a cohesive models. A parametric study sheds light on the methodology to use for the calibration of the cohesive parameters. The simulations show that for a ratio thickness over craci tip radius larger than 20, a minimum tuoghness can be observed. This results has implication on the definition of a thickness larger enough experimentally.

The enigma of appearances: photography of the third dimension

Fiveash, Tina Dale, Media Arts, College of Fine Arts, UNSW January 2007 (has links)
The Enigma of Appearances is an examination into the medium of three-dimensional photography, with particular focus on the technique of stereoscopy. Invented in the mid-Victorian era, stereoscopy was an attempt to simulate natural three-dimensional perception via a combination of optics, neurology, and a pair of dissimilar images. Whilst successful in producing a powerful illusion of spatial depth and tangibility, the illusion produced by stereoscopy is anything but ??natural??, when compared to three-dimensional perception observed with the naked eye. Rather, stereoscopic photography creates a strange and unnatural interpretation of three-dimensional reality, devoid of atmosphere, movement and sound, where figures appear frozen in mid-motion, like waxwork models, or embalmed creatures in a museum. However, it is precisely stereoscopic photography??s unique and enigmatic interpretation of three-dimensional reality, which gives it its strength, separating it from being a mere ??realistic?? recording of the natural world. This thesis examines the unique cultural position that stereoscopy has occupied since its invention in 1838, from its early role as a tool for the study of binocular vision, to its phenomenal popularity as a form of mass entertainment in the second half of the 19th century, to its emergence in contemporary fine art practice in the late 20th and 21stt centuries. Additionally, The Enigma of Appearances gives a detailed analysis of the theory of spatial depth perception; it discusses the dichotomy between naturalia versus artificialia in relation to stereoscopic vision; and finally, traces the development of experimental studio practice and research into stereoscopic photography, undertaken for this MFA between 2005 and 2007. The resulting work, Camera Mortuaria (Italian for ??Mortuary Room??), is a powerful and innovative series of anaglyptic portraits, based upon an experimental stereoscopic technique that enables the production of extreme close-up three-dimensional photography. Applying this technique to the reproduction of the human face in three-dimensional form, Camera Mortuaria presents a series of ??photo sculptures??, which hover between reality and illusion, pushing the boundaries of stills photography to the limit, and beyond.

Scalable video compression with optimized visual performance and random accessibility

Leung, Raymond, Electrical Engineering & Telecommunications, Faculty of Engineering, UNSW January 2006 (has links)
This thesis is concerned with maximizing the coding efficiency, random accessibility and visual performance of scalable compressed video. The unifying theme behind this work is the use of finely embedded localized coding structures, which govern the extent to which these goals may be jointly achieved. The first part focuses on scalable volumetric image compression. We investigate 3D transform and coding techniques which exploit inter-slice statistical redundancies without compromising slice accessibility. Our study shows that the motion-compensated temporal discrete wavelet transform (MC-TDWT) practically achieves an upper bound to the compression efficiency of slice transforms. From a video coding perspective, we find that most of the coding gain is attributed to offsetting the learning penalty in adaptive arithmetic coding through 3D code-block extension, rather than inter-frame context modelling. The second aspect of this thesis examines random accessibility. Accessibility refers to the ease with which a region of interest is accessed (subband samples needed for reconstruction are retrieved) from a compressed video bitstream, subject to spatiotemporal code-block constraints. We investigate the fundamental implications of motion compensation for random access efficiency and the compression performance of scalable interactive video. We demonstrate that inclusion of motion compensation operators within the lifting steps of a temporal subband transform incurs a random access penalty which depends on the characteristics of the motion field. The final aspect of this thesis aims to minimize the perceptual impact of visible distortion in scalable reconstructed video. We present a visual optimization strategy based on distortion scaling which raises the distortion-length slope of perceptually significant samples. This alters the codestream embedding order during post-compression rate-distortion optimization, thus allowing visually sensitive sites to be encoded with higher fidelity at a given bit-rate. For visual sensitivity analysis, we propose a contrast perception model that incorporates an adaptive masking slope. This versatile feature provides a context which models perceptual significance. It enables scene structures that otherwise suffer significant degradation to be preserved at lower bit-rates. The novelty in our approach derives from a set of "perceptual mappings" which account for quantization noise shaping effects induced by motion-compensated temporal synthesis. The proposed technique reduces wavelet compression artefacts and improves the perceptual quality of video.

Solitons optiques spatiaux Kerr et photoreactifs : propriétés fondamentales et application à l'adressage optique

Coda, V. 13 December 2006 (has links) (PDF)

Ait Aider, Omar 19 December 2002 (has links) (PDF)
