It is a great advantage of gaining knowledge about the environment for navigation. The environment should be measured during the employment as exactly as possible, in order to be able to react correctly. Robots are being used for different tasks at contaminated environments, places in danger or completely safe places. For robotic use, scanning capabilities of the environment are limited at the present. Adhering to the limitations of the scanning systems, the environment is scanned at a particular level and charted with appropriate software. In some cases, this scanning capability is not enough to react correctly.
Taking these needs into consideration, this thesis successfully demonstrates the design and implementation of a scanning platform for mobile robotics. A scanning platform with a laser rangefinder scanner will be addressed in a compact design with maximum field of view for quickly mapping and high resolution.
With this design, the scanning system will be provided by rotating laser rangefinder at z-axis in one dimension. Laser rangefinder will also measure the distance as the second dimension of the system. Also it rotates the laser beam at another axis which is different from the measuring distance axis and rotary z-axis. In this way, the scanning system will have the three-dimensional scanning ability. This design allows the scanning platform, continuous scanning capability at three dimensional.

The goal of this research is to better understand the gap between the consumer's actual self image versus their perceived ideal image; in which, could help an online retail company to respond more effectively and provide a better service to its target customer with an added goal of reducing the rate of returns. A two-phased mixed methods approach was applied to this research to test for participants perceived and actual ideas of themselves, as well as their attitudes towards ideals. The first phase consisted of manual measurements taken and recorded, following a semi-structured interviewed. The second phase consisted of a 3D scan (digital measurements) taken and recorded followed by a four question survey comprising of three Likert questions, and one open ended question, concluding with researcher observations noted. The results showed that while the participants were mostly congruent with regards to size, they were mostly incongruent with regards to shape, and had zero congruence between the actual and the ideal self. All participants also experienced varying levels of fit issues with several areas mentioned, though pants/bottoms being the number one fit struggle. All participants expressed interested in the 3D scanning technology, felt it was easy to use, but there was a lack of continuity between participant self-reported survey answers, and their verbal answers as well as research observations.

Digitizing objects and environments from real world has become an important part of creating realistic computer graphics. Through the use of structured lighting and laser time-of-flight measurements the capturing of geometric models is now a common process. The result are visualizations where viewers gain new possibilities for both visual and intellectual experiences. This thesis presents the reconstruction of the Parthenon temple and its environment in Athens, Greece by using a 3D laser-scanning technique. In order to reconstruct a realistic model using 3D scanning techniques there are various phases in which the acquired datasets have to be processed. The data has to be organized, registered and integrated in addition to pre and post processing. This thesis describes the development of a suitable and efficient data processing pipeline for the given data. The approach differs from previous scanning projects considering digitizing this large scale object at very high resolution. In particular the issue managing and processing huge datasets is described. Finally, the processing of the datasets in the different phases and the resulting 3D model of the Parthenon is presented and evaluated.

Optical methods for 3D-reconstruction of railway bridges : Infrared scanning, Close range photogrammetry and Terrestrial laser scanningCrabtree Gärdin, David, Jimenez, Alexander January 2018 (has links)
The forecast of the next upcoming years estimates a growth of demand in transport. As the railway sector in Europe has developed over many years, the infrastructure presents performance issues because of, among other factors, asset maintenance activities being difficult and time consuming. There are currently 4000 railway bridges in Sweden managed by Trafikverket which are submitted to inspections at least every six years. The most common survey is done visually to determine the physical and functional condition of the bridges as well as finding damages that may exist on them. Because visual inspection is a subjective evaluation technique, the results of these bridge inspections may vary from inspector to inspector. The data collection is time consuming and written in standard inspection reports which may not provide sufficient visualization of damages. The inspector also needs to move around the bridge at close distance which could lead to unsafe working conditions. 3D modelling technology is becoming more and more common. Methods such as Close Ranged Photogrammetry (CRP) and Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) are starting to be used for architecture and heritage preservation as well as engineering applications. Infrared (IR) scanning is also showing potential in creating 3D models but has yet not been used for structural analysis and inspections. A result from these methods is a point cloud, a 3D representation of a model in points that can be used for creating as-built Building Information Modeling (BIM)-models. In this study, the authors put these three methods to test to see if IR scanning and CRP are suitable ways, such as TLS is, to gather data for 3D-reconstruction of concrete railway bridges in fast, safe and non-disturbing ways. For this, the three technologies are performed on six bridges chosen by Trafikverket. The further aim is to determine if the 3D-reconstructions can be used for acquiring BIM-information to, among other things, create as-built drawings and to perform structural evaluations. As a result from the study, IR scanning and CRP show great potential as well as TLS in 3D-reconstruction of concrete railway bridges in fast, safe and non-disturbing ways. Still, there is a need of development regarding the technologies before we can start to rely on them completely.

Im Rahmen einer Diplomarbeit an der TU Bergakademie Freiberg wurden in 2014 die Grundlagen für die Auswertung von 3D-Punktwolken zur automatisierten Nachtragung des Risswerks gelegt. Um die dafür notwendigen 3D-Punktwolken möglichst wirtschaftlich zu erstellen, laufen seit 2015 Untersuchungen und Testmessungen zur Machbarkeit des untertägigen Einsatzes von mobil messenden Laserscannern. Im Folgenden werden verschiedene technische Ansätze sowie die Ergebnisse der Testmessungen und die weiteren geplanten Schritte vorgestellt. / As part of a thesis at the Technical University of Freiberg, a basis for the analysis of 3D point clouds was set for refining the mine map automatically. Since 2015 studies and test measurements have been running to create the necessary 3D point clouds as economically as possible, by using an underground mobile scanning system. Below the different technical approaches will be presented as well as the results of the test measurements and the next planned steps.

Drawing sketches is certainly one of the most important but at the same time elaborate parts of archaeological work. Currently, 3D scanning technology is affording a number of new applications, and only one of them is using virtual copies instead of the originals as the basis for documentation. Our major contribution are methods for automatically generating stylized images from 3D models. These are not only intuitive and easy to read but also more objective and accurate than traditional drawings. Besides some other useful tools we show several examples from our daily work proving that the system accelerates the whole documentation process considerably.

The proposal is based on the needs and requirements discussed and defined among group members, clients and other stakeholders. The main requirement is that the product can be programmed and controlled by acomputer. This requirement was strengthened through the execution of a pairwise comparison. A broad market research is described and methods that have been used to achieve the results. In order to better understand how much the load will affect the product, a force measurement test was performed and analyzed. Earlier reports about reverse engineering, different applications and scanning techniques provide a deeper understanding of factors that may affect the selection of the product.

This thesis deals with the design and production of wheel control holders for the right front wheel of the formula Dragon 4 of TU Brno Racing team. In the theoretical part, the Formula Student competition is described, including the steering holders themselves and description of their function and location. Later the analysis of aluminium and its alloy was made, including description of the CERTAL material of which the holders were made. The practical part includes the design of prototype holders in the Autodesk Inventor CAD software, the design and application of machining strategies in the PowerMILL CAM software. Further, the practical part includes production on milling machines at the MCV 754 QUICK and DECKEL MAHO DMU 50 machining centre. At the end, the dimensional analysis of the part is performed, manufactured holders were compared to the CAD model of the given components and the technical and economical evaluation of the production was made.

The diploma thesis pointed out the possibility of using rapid prototyping methods in the field of plastic injection, specifically to make shaped inserts into the injection mold. The universal frame of the injection mold was used and only the shaped inserts were changed. The main part of the work was the construction of an injection mold with the subsequent practical production of shaped inserts for a specified part. In the introductory part, a theoretical search was performed, about which production methods in combination with suitable materials could be theoretically used. Furthermore, the polyjet and DLP methods were chosen, which were used to produce components (core and cavity). The result of the diploma thesis was a summary of all parameters, comparison of materials and production methods. Polypropylene and polyamide 6 materials were injected into the injection mold, from which the first prototype products were made. Instructions for the production of shaped inserts with the recommended technology and material were created for the selected type, which could be used in practice.
