Effect Of Prismatic Roughness On Hydraulic Jump In Trapezoidal Channels

Evcimen, Taylan Ulas 01 May 2012 (has links) (PDF)
A study of the hydraulic jump on a trapezoidal prismatic channel and roughened beds is presented. Extensive measurements have been made regarding the characteristics of hydraulic jumps as sequent depths, wing fluctuations, energy dissipation and jump length on artificially roughened beds for Froude numbers between 4.16 and 14.58. Three different types of prismatic roughness elements and nine different roughness patterns were installed separately on channel bottom and side walls throughout the experiments to obtain rough surfaces. Strip roughness elements were built from fiberglass sheets and implemented perpendicular to the flow direction. To avoid cavitation, roughness elements were designed in that way that the crests of the elements are not protruding into the flow. The founded properties were compared with the available data in literature and with the properties of hydraulic jump occurred on smooth bed.

Thermally Stimulated Current Observation Of Trapping Centers In Layered Thallium Dichalcogenide Semiconductors

Yuksek, Nuh Sadi 01 August 2004 (has links) (PDF)
Thermally stimulated current measurements are carried out on as-grown TlGaS2, TlGaSe2 and TlInS2 layered single crystals with the current owing perpendiclar to the c-axis in the wide temperature range of 10-300 K with various heating rates. Experimental evidence is found for the presence of three, two and one trapping centers for TlGaS2 , TlGaSe2 and TlInS2 crystals with activation energies 6, 12 and 26 / 98 and 130 / 12 meV respectively. We have determined the trap parameters using varous methods of analyis, and these agree well with each other. The retrapping process is negligible for these levels, as confirmed by good agreement between the experimental results and theoretical predictions of the model that assumes slow retrapping. Also the calculated values of the capture cross sections, attempt to escape frequencies and the concentration of the traps are reported.

One king to rule them all : identidade, legitimação e unidade na versão Alfrediana da Consolação da Filosofia (Séc. IX - X)

Pereira, Monah Nascimento January 2016 (has links)
Orientadora : Profª. Drª. Palavras-chave: Inglaterra anglo-saxônica; Alfred; Legitimação / Abstract: At the end of the ninth century what historians have named as Alfredian period begins in Anglo-Saxon England. The main characteristics of such period are built upon essential factors, including the struggle for survival of the kingdom of Wessex facing Viking invaders, and the process of cultural and spiritual revival that marked the reign of Alfred the Great (871-899). In this context, recognized works of Christian Patristic were translated from Latin to Old English, in an environment of social and cultural changes that were constructed and legitimated based on a recognized tradition. De Consolatione Philosophiae, originally written by Boethius in the sixth century, is a philosophical and literary work, in which issues such as true happiness, wisdom, free will and the mutating fate (wyrd) are discussed. The Alfredian version of it brings a number of changes and additions, which aim to update the authorized speech by Boethius, adapting it to the needs and expectations of the historical moment. Our interpretive keys to study this theme come from a historiographical line represented by researchers like David Pratt and Nicole Discenza, which seek not only to observe philosophical issues presented in the Alfredian work, but to analyze the relation between this and the context of changes in the political and cultural landscape of medieval England, which is heading towards the English unification of the tenth century. Thus, we seek to understand the work identifying it in its context, analyzing the forms of abstraction used at the time for explanation of society and, consequently, legitimation of a royal practice that is being built. Our goal is to understand how the sense of history, unity and providence in the text contributes to the creation of an identity ideal based on religion and Christian Latin tradition, which ends up strengthening the concept of unity of the kingdom, which begins to be forged from Alfred onwards. Keywords: Anglo-Saxon England; Alfred; Legitimation

X-ray Physics And Computerized Tomography Simulation Using Java And Flash

Sik, Ayhan Serkan 01 December 2003 (has links) (PDF)
For the education of X-ray imaging, having a detailed knowledge on the interaction of radiation with matter is very important. Also the generation and detection concepts of the X-ray have to be grasped well. Sometimes it is not easy to visualize the interactions and assess the scheme in quantum physics level for the medical doctors and the engineers who have not studied on the modern physics in an appropriate level. This thesis aims to visualize these interactions, X-ray generation and detection, and computerized tomographic imaging. With these simulations, the user can 1) observe and analyze which type of interaction occurs under which condition, 2) understand the interaction cross sections and interaction results, 3) visualise X-ray generation and detection features, 4) clarify the method of image reconstruction, and the features affecting the image quality in computerized tomography system. This is accomplished by changing the controllable variables of the radiation and the systems with the provided interfaces. In this thesis, JAVA/FLASH based simulation interfaces are designed to easily assess the subject. The benefits of these software are their ability to execute the programs prepared on the World Wide Web media. The interfaces are accessible from anywhere, at any time.

Songes, apparitions et images mentales : les influences de la doctorine épicurienne sur l'Enéide de Virgile / Dreams, apparitions and mental images : the impacts of epicureanism on the Vergil’s Aeneid

Monchy, Anaïs 25 October 2018 (has links)
This thesis aims to highlight links between the epicurean philosophy and Vergil’s epic. If the relations between Epicurus’ philosophy and Vergil’s work have been widely discussed, the highlighted interconnections and links mainly deal with his early works, ie. Georgics and Bucolics. On the other hand, it is possible to note that in Aeneas’ epic the footprint of epicureanism are often put on a second plan. Both as in Vergil and in Lucretius and the Epicureans, the topic dealing with the vision and the dream has an important status. This study aims to demonstrate the way the literary interpretation of the differents episodes of dreams and apparitions, that punctuate Vergil’s epic, is a mirror of the epicurean considerations that took part in the philosophical background of the young poet. The way he deals with the subject of the dreams and the apparitions through a codified epic story is compared with Epicurus’ writings and more specifically with Lucretius’ De rerum natura. Epistemological questions linked with the epicureanism, as well an analysis of the vocabulary refering to images and dreams are the main point of the study.through the epicureanism, limited to the texts dealing with dreams and apparitions, the analysis of Vergil’s verses thanks to Lucretius’ work allows us to highlight affinities in terms of the lexicon as well as the topics covered. The marks of an epicurean influence in Vergil’s epic are, as the dreams and the apparitions, of a tenuous essence, but if we look at this carefully, they are nevertheless neither intangible nor elusive.

Arthur Johnston and the fostering of Scottish letters

Farquhar, Alexander J. K. January 2014 (has links)
Traditionally, Arthur Johnston has been judged proxime accessit to George Buchanan in the world of Scottish neo-Latin poetry, and particularly in the versification of the Book of Psalms. The thesis offers a counterpoint to that theme. More of his poetry came under scrutiny at the close of the nineteenth century, when an edition of his Parerga and Epigrammata of 1632, turned scholarly attention to his secular poems. This study examines the poems written between 1599 and 1622 during Johnston’s peregrenatio academica in Europe – poems which depict him at the moment of his emergence onto the public stage, and which offer insights into his life, and the worlds he occupied, during those years. Part one of the thesis will examine his early years and his move into the academic world in Aberdeen and at Heidelberg University. Part two will consider the years he passed as a teacher of philosophy at the Huguenot Academy in Sedan, the independent principality on the northern border of France. It will look, too, at the evidence of his year spent in Padua, where he studied to become a physician. Part three will focus on the years 1619-22 when his longest secular poems were composed. He wrote and published with an eye to achieving a post in the medical circle around James VI and I. The thesis concludes by considering the retreat he made from Europe and London to his home in Aberdeen, and looks briefly at one of the small poems he wrote in 1623-24. Throughout, themes emerge of Johnston’s irenic preferences, and his response to the disturbance to intellectual life brought about by Calvinist division, and by the crisis heralded by the Bohemian Revolt.
