Cardinal Bessarion and the transmission and interpretation of Plato in the fifteenth century

Malone-Lee, Michael January 2015 (has links)
Cardinal Bessarion came from his native Byzantium and settled in Rome in the mid fifteenth century. He was a Basilian monk and, at the time, a Greek Archbishop. His cultural background was in the rationalist tradition of Greek theology. As the Byzantine Empire succumbed to the invading Turks he made it his mission to preserve as much of Greek cultural heritage as possible. Part of this mission was to set out for the Italians (or Latins as he called them) the teachings of Plato of which they had only scanty knowledge. His work in Calumniatorem Platonis was intended as a defence of Plato's teachings against the criticisms of the militant Aristotelian George of Trebizond. This thesis examines Bessarion's exposition of Plato's teachings in that work on a range of philosophical questions that were litmus tests of theological orthodoxy at the time. It argues that Bessarion's exposition of Plato is heavily interpreted through a prism of later commentaries and thinkers particularly the Neo-Platonists. It shows how these interpretations and Bessarion's use of his sources is determined by his aim of showing that Plato's philosophy was closer to Christian orthodoxy than Aristotle's and, therefore, provided a firmer philosophical base than the prevailing Aristotelianism.

Le "Discours sur la royauté" de Synésios de Cyrène et l’idéologie impériale byzantine aux Ve et VIe siècles / Synesius' "De regno" and Byzantine Imperial ideology during the Vth and Vlth centuries

Alvino, Maria Consiglia 20 October 2017 (has links)
The aim of the thesis is the analysis of the influence of Synesius’ De regno on the development of political theory during the Vth and VIth centuries. Firstly, the definition of Synesius’ political ideology in the context of his neoplatonic and christian Alexandrian paideia is taken into account. In order to understand the role played by Synesius’ De regno in the transmission of ancient political topoi, an investigation on some representative proto-byzantine works on political science (Procopius Gazaeus’ Panegyricus to the Emperor Anastasius, Agapetus’ Advice to the Emperor, the anonymus Dialogue on Political Science and John the Lydian’s On powers, or, The magistracies of the Roman state) is proposed. The conclusions try to focus on the impact of Synesius’ De regno in the evolution of proto-byzantine political theories and rhetorics during the Vth century up to Justinian’s times thanks to the individuation of quotations, allusions and literary patterns of continuity in the works previously analysed.

Discours de résistance dans les persécutions antichrétiennes (IIe-IIIe siècles) : recherches sur l'ad martyras, l'ad Scapulam et le de fuga in persecutione de Tertullien / Resistant speeches in antichristian persecutions (2nd-3rd century AD) : investigations on Tertullian’s ad martyras, ad Scapulam and de fuga in persecutione

Boidron Freslon, Elina 26 November 2018 (has links)
This dissertation consists in the critical edition, French translationand commentary of Tertullian’s Ad Martyras, Ad Scapulam and De fuga in persecutione. The edition is based on a new reading of five of the main manuscripts which contain the texts, on early and modern critical editions and on the readings of lost manuscripts given by humanist sources. The three texts deal with the antichristian persecutions. In the Ad martyras, where Tertullian writes to emprisoned Christians, persecution is seen as a trial ; in the Ad Scapulam, addressed to the Carthaginian proconsul, Tertullian intends to prevent him from persecuting Christians. At last, the treatise De fuga in persecutione encourages Christians to accept persecution even if they can flee it. We paid attention to the speech Tertullian elaborates both ad extra to deter Roman authorities from persecuting and ad intra to support Christians in trial.

Utilization Of Ggbfs Blended Cement Pastes In Well Cementing

Alp, Baris 01 September 2012 (has links) (PDF)
In well cementing, the cement slurry is exposed to the conditions far different than those of ordinary Portland cement (PC) used in construction. After placement, hardened cement paste should preserve integrity and provide zonal isolation through the life of the well. American Petroleum Institute (API) Class G cement is the most common cement type used in various well conditions. Class G cement has a high degree of sulfate resistance which makes it more stable than PC when subjected to the compulsive well conditions. Ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) blended cement has a long history of use in the construction industry, but is not extensively used in well cementing applications. This study presents an experimental program to investigate the applicability of CEM I and GGBFS blended cement pastes in the well cementing industry. Class G cement and blends of CEM I and GGBFS with the proportions (80:20), (60:40), (40:60) and (20:80) are prepared with same water/cement ratio (0.44) as restricted for Class G cement in API Specification 10A to be tested. The cement pastes are cured for ages of 1 day, 7 days and 28 days at 80

Le discours "En l’honneur de Rome" d’Aelius Aristide (or. XXVI K) : histoire de la tradition et édition critique / The speech "To Rome" of Aelius Aristides (or. XXVI K) : history of tradition and critical edition

Di Franco, Matteo 28 September 2017 (has links)
The purpose of the present thesis is to perform a research on the textual tradition and the critical edition of Aelius Aristides’ speech Εἰς Ῥώμην (To Rome) (2nd century CE). Delivered in Rome in 144 CE, this speech is a praise of the Roman Empire. The first critical edition of the speech was published by B. Keil in 1898; in the 20th century, two philologists prepared editions with critical text, based on the apparatus of Keil. The thesis consists of a general introduction and two parts, followed by the bibliography, and four appendices. The first part explains the research on the textual tradition of the speech, and is structured in six chapters. The second part consists of the critical edition of the speech To Rome, with critical apparatus and the testimonies of the indirect tradition. The Greek text is followed by a complementary apparatus offering the variant readings of the minor manuscripts and some critical notes.
