華語焦點變調 / Mandarin Focal Tone Sandhi

本文旨在探討華語焦點變調,並以青年語者為主。本文分別檢驗三種不同的句型,第一類為焦點助動詞和焦點副詞,第二類為平坦結構,第三類則是其它類型的句子。在優選理論的架構下,本文分別提出韻律制約和聲調制約來詮釋華語的焦點變調。筆者透過並存音韻理論(Cophonology Theory)來說明焦點韻律結構的劃分是多個次語法的運作結果。焦點韻律結構的劃分有兩種,主要由(ALIGN-L(F, FP), ALIGN-L(FP, Ft))和(ALIGN-R(F, FP), ALIGN-R(FP, Ft))這兩組可移動的對整制約來決定,當它們在制約排序中移動到不同的位置時會形成不同的韻律結構劃分。本研究發現焦點詞組等同於語調詞組,因此提出另一個對整制約ALIGN-E(FP, IP)來解釋。排序最高的韻律制約則是[FTMIN & NON-FINALITY],目的在於避免單音節音步出現在句末。至於聲調制約,筆者採用IDENT-BOT來處理三音節音步的變調結果。此外,焦點韻律結構的劃分會造成兩個相鄰的上聲出現在不同的音步之中,OCP-L(ft)可以確保此形式的保留。簡言之,本文藉由優選理論的觀點,以及韻律制約和聲調制約的互動,對華語焦點變調提出了一個整體分析。 / This thesis examines Mandarin focal tone sandhi among Taiwan youngsters. Three types of sentences are under investigation: Type A includes the focused auxiliary verbs and adverbs in a simple sentence, Type B the flat structure, and Type C the other types of structures. Under the framework of Optimality Theory, this thesis proposes prosodic constraints and tonal constraints to account for Mandarin focal tone sandhi. This thesis adopts Cophonology Theory to explain the subgrammars of focal phrasings. There are two types of focal phrasing patterns governed by the reranking of two sets of alignment constraints (ALIGN-L(F, FP), ALIGN-L(FP, Ft)) and (ALIGN-R(F, FP), ALIGN-R(FP, Ft)). The focal phrase pertains to a special kind of intonational phrase. This thesis proposes ALIGN-E(FP, IP) to explain this condition. The undominated constraint, [FTMIN & NON-FINALITY], is proposed to ban a monosyllabic foot in sentence-final positions. IDENT-BOT is adopted to deal with the tri-tonal strings such as (σ(σσ)) and ((σσ)σ) in non-focal and focal readings. In addition, focal phrasing may force adjacent L tones to appear in different feet. OCP-L(ft) is proposed to explain this situation. To conclude, based on the constraint-based theory, and the interaction of prosodic constraints and tonal constraints, this thesis has provided a theoretical generalization of Mandarin focal tone sandhi.

Σε αυτήν την εργασία, παρουσιάζουμε τις βασικότερες κλασικές προσεγγίσεις επίλυσης Πολυ-αντικειμενικών Προβλημάτων Βελτιστοποίησης(ΠΠΒ)καθώς και ένα από τα πιο δημοφιλή λογισμικά για επίλυση ΠΠΒ, το NIMBUS. Συγκεκριμένα, δίνουμε τον ορισμό ενός ΠΠΒ, το θεωρητικό υπόβαθρο -- για την καλύτερη κατανόηση των μεθόδων που θα ακολουθήσουν - και τις διαφορές των ΠΠΒ με τα κλασσικά Μονο-αντικειμενικά προβλήματα Βελτιστοποίησης. Επιπλέον, παρουσιάζουμε τις τρεις κύριες κατηγορίες προσέγγισης των ΠΠΒ (μη-αλληλεπιδραστικές, αλληλεπιδραστικές, εξελικτικές) ο διαχωρισμός των οποίων γίνεται ανάλογα με την άμεση ή έμμεση εμπλοκή του Λήπτη Απόφασης. Η μελέτη μας εστιάζεται κυρίως στην κατηγορία των μη-αλληλεπιδραστικών προσεγγίσεων, στην οποία ο ΛΑ εμπλέκεται έμμεσα. Τέλος, ολοκληρώνουμε την μελέτη μας με την αναλυτική παρουσίαση της επίλυσης ενός ΠΠB με την χρήση του λογισμικού NIMBUS. / In this contribution, we study the classical approaches for solving Multi-objective Optimization Problems (MOOP) as well as one of the most popular software that solves MOOP, namely NIMBUS. More specifically, we present the definition and the theoretical background around MOOP and we discuss the differences between MOOP and the classical single-objective optimization problems. We also present the three main categories of approaches of solving MOOP (non-interactive, interactive, evolutionary) that are characterized by the way the Decision Maker participates in the solution. We focus on the first category by analyzing each of the non-interactive approaches. Finally, we conclude by presenting an analytic illustration of an example that solves a MOOP using the NIMBUS software.

Prosodie et contact de langues : le cas du système tonal du français centrafricain / Prosody and language contact : the tonal system in central african french

L’objectif de cette étude est d’apporter une contribution aux recherches portant sur les effets prosodiques du contact de langues à travers l’étude du système prosodique du français centrafricain, une variété de français ayant émergé suite au contact avec une langue africaine à densité tonale maximale, le sango. La République centrafricaine est un pays extrêmement multilingue. Entre 60 et 100 langues y sont parlées, outre les deux langues officielles que constituent le sango – lingua franca, et le français – langue principale de l’enseignement et de l’administration publique. Dans la capitale, Bangui, le sango est la langue parlée d’ordinaire dans la vie quotidienne, tandis que le français s’utilise essentiellement dans des contextes professionnels. Cette étude se base sur des enregistrements de parole spontanée de 12 locuteurs francophones de Bangui. Des analyses acoustiques montrent que l’intonation du français centrafricain partage des caractéristiques communes avec le sango. La majorité de mots ont des patrons tonals qui restent inchangés quel que soit leur place dans l’énoncé, et chaque syllabe porte un ton. Le système se distingue ainsi considérablement du système intonatif du français européen où la courbe mélodique est contrainte au niveau post-lexical et dépend entre autres de facteurs rythmiques, syntaxiques et pragmatiques. La conclusion principale de cette étude est que le français centrafricain se classifie d’un point de vue typologique comme une langue à tons lexicaux. Il ressort que le système prosodique du français centrafricain est plus proche de celui du sango et que de celui du français européen. Les faits mis au jour dans cette thèse montrent que la prosodie peut changer de façon fondamentale dans une situation de contact de langue. / This study is concerned with prosody and language contact. The fact that language contact induces change is well documented, but few studies focus on the prosodic effects of contact-induced change. The aim of this study is to provide a case study of the prosodic system of the contact variety Central African French, which has emerged from the contact between French and the African tone language, Sango.The Central African Republic is a multilingual country with between 60 to 100 different regional languages spoken within its borders in addition to two official languages, the lingua franca Sango and French. French has been the main language of education and of public administration since colonial times. In the capital Bangui, Sango is the most used language in everyday communication whereas French is spoken in professional contexts. This study is based on recordings of spontaneous speech of 12 French-speaking informants from Bangui. Acoustic analyses of the recordings show that the prosody of Central African French shares with Sango some fundamental characteristics: most words have fixed tonal patterns independently of their position in the sentence and every syllable carries a static tone. This system greatly differs from the system of European varieties of French, where the sentence melody is determined at the post-lexical level and depends on factors such as rhythm, syntax and pragmatics. The main conclusion of this study is that Central African French may be classified as a tone language and thus is endowed with a prosodic system that is closer to Sango than to European French. This finding suggests that intonation might change radically in contact situations ; the change is not only superficial but concerns the underlying system.

As consoantes geminadas do italiano : análise de sua produção por falantes italianos e por aprendizes brasileiros

Nesta Tese, investigamos as consoantes geminadas no italiano a partir da produção dessas em dados coletados de falantes italianos e de aprendizes brasileiros, alunos das disciplinas de graduação oferecidas pelo Setor de Italiano do Instituto de Letras da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. A questão geral que norteia nossa análise acústica e fonológica é verificar se falantes brasileiros, aprendizes de italiano, adquirem essas consoantes. As geminadas são caracterizadas foneticamente como consoantes longas (Ridouane, 2010) e, fonologicamente, como portadoras de mora (McCarthy & Prince, 1986; Hayes, 1989; Morén, 1999). No italiano, esses segmentos têm função distintiva (Dardano & Trifone, 1999) quando se encontram no interior de palavras, mas não quando emergem na frase, entre palavras. Neste ambiente, a geminação consonântica é provocada pela gramática, em respeito a condições de boa formação prosódica. Com base nessas considerações, analisamos dados de realização de geminadas, especificamente coletados e analisados por meio do software PRAAT, versão 5.1.42 (Boersma & Weenink, 2010). A análise da duração das consoantes nos dados dos italianos e dos brasileiros nos possibilitou visualizar que: (1) o contexto prosódico interfere na duração dos segmentos; (2) embora o contexto prosódico interfira na duração, o contraste é preservado nos dados dos participantes italianos; (3) a princípio, os aprendizes relacionam a duração da consoante à distribuição do acento primário, mas, com o progresso no curso de italiano, os aprendizes passam a produzir, além das consoantes geminadas em ambiente tônico, geminadas em ambiente átono, embora não categoricamente. Construímos nossa análise com base nos pressupostos da Teoria da Otimidade (Prince & Smolensky, 1993/ 2004). Seguindo as predições da Teoria Mórica (Hayes, 1989) e a proposta de Morén (1999), mostramos, com base na literatura e em nossos resultados, que a aquisição de geminadas pelos aprendizes brasileiros depende do ranking alto da restrição de fidelidade MAXLINK-MORA[CON], ativa na gramática dos participantes italianos. As geminadas que ramificam sílabas tônicas são encontradas inclusive nos dados dos aprendizes brasileiros matriculados nos níveis iniciais do curso de italiano. Neste caso, o que garante sua produção é o ranking alto de WSP, que associa peso silábico a acento, em interação com as restrições de marcação FTBIN, que requer pés binários, *LONGV, que marca violação a candidatos com vogal longa, juntamente com a restrição EDGEMOST-R, que milita a favor do alinhamento do acento com a margem direita da palavra. A quantidade consonântica provocada pela gramática em favor da formação de pés harmônicos (como ocorre no caso da geminação na frase) corresponde à situação de mora por coerção (Morén, 1999). Nossa análise mostra que, nos dados dos aprendizes, a mora das consoantes geminadas que travam sílabas acentuadas é mantida pelo alto ranking das restrições de marcação que militam a favor de pés bem-formados e da limitação do acento primário à janela de três sílabas. Em relação à geminação na frase, apesar da relação entre acento e geminação, o fenômeno é opcional nos dados de um dos falantes italianos. Supomos que a posição de NOCODA/ (adaptada de Flack, 2009), sem ranking estrito em relação a WSP, justifique sua opcionalidade, apresentada também nos dados dos aprendizes brasileiros. Nossos resultados nos levam a crer que a opcionalidade de outputs com Raddoppiamento Sintattico (Nespor & Vogel, 1986) e a aquisição não categórica de geminadas lexicais indiquem que o algoritmo de aprendizagem seja gradual (Boersma, 1997; Boersma & Hayes, 2000). / In this dissertation, we investigate the geminate consonants of Italian using production data collected from Italian speakers and Brazilian learners who take undergraduate courses at the Italian Section of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). The general question that guided our acoustic and phonological analysis is whether Brazilian speakers who are learners of Italian acquire such consonants. Geminates are characterized phonetically as long consonants (Ridouane, 2010) and, phonologically, they are mora-bearing (McCarthy & Prince, 1986; Hayes, 1989; Morén, 1999). In Italian, these segments are distinctive (Dardano & Trifone, 1999) in word-internal position, but not when they emerge at the phrase level, between words. In this environment, consonant germination is created by grammar, enforcing prosodic well-formedness conditions. Based on these facts, we have analyzed production data for geminates. Specifically, the data were collected and analyzed with PRAAT (version 5.1.42) software (Boersma & Weenink, 2010). The analysis of consonant length in the Italian and Brazilian data showed that: (1) prosodic context interferes with the length of segments; (2) even though prosodic context interferes with length, contrast is preserved in the data from Italian participants; (3) initially, learners tend to associate consonant length with the placement of primary stress; however, as they advance through the course, learners start to produce, in addition to geminate consonants in stressed environments, geminates in unstressed environments, though not categorically. We have developed our analysis based on the principles of Optimality Theory (Prince & Smolensky, 1993/2004). Following the predictions of Moraic Theory (Hayes, 1989) and the proposal of Morén (1999), we show, based on the relevant literature and our own results, that the acquisition of geminates by Brazilian learners depends on a high ranking of the MAXLINK-MORA[CON] faithfulness constraint, which is active in the grammar of Italian participants. Geminates that cause branching in stressed syllables can be found even in the data from Brazilian learners enrolled in beginner-level Italian courses. In this case, what ensures their production is the high ranking of WSP, which associates syllable weight with stress, and interacts with markedness constraints FTBIN, related to foot binarity, *LONGV, which assigns a violation to candidates with long vowels, as well as EDGEMOST-R, which militates in favor of alignment of the stress with the right margin of the word. The consonant quantity enforced by the grammar in favor of the creation of harmonic feet (as in the case of phrase gemination) corresponds to the scenario of coerced moraicity (Morén, 1999). Our analysis shows that, in the data of learners, the moras of geminate consonants at the end of stressed syllables are preserved due to the high ranking of markedness constraints that militate in favor of well-formed feet and to the limitation of primary stress to the three-syllable window. Concerning phrase gemination, in spite of the relationship between stress and gemination, such a phenomenon was optional in the data from one of the Italian speakers. We assume that the position of NOCODA/ (adapted from Flack, 2009), without a strict ranking with respect to WSP, justifies its optionality, which also appears in the data of Brazilian learners. Our results lead us to believe that the optionality of outputs with Raddoppiamento Sintattico (Nespor & Vogel, 1986) and the non-categorical acquisition of lexical geminates indicate that the learning algorithm is gradual (Boersma, 1997; Boersma & Hayes, 2001).

The relationship between self-actualisation and emotional intelligence

The aim of this research is to show theoretical similarities between emotional intelligence and self-actualisation. The empirical results give evidence of the relationship between these two concepts. An assessment battery consisting of the BarOn Emotional Quotient Inventory (BarOn EQ-i), an emotional intelligence instrument and the Personal Orientation Inventory (POI), a self-actualisation instrument was used to measure the concepts of emotional intelligence and self-actualisation. A sample of 71 employees was assessed using psychometric tests and a biographical questionnaire. The data was collected over a period of four months. The statistical methods used in this research focus on quantitative measurement. Calculations are mainly done with t-tests and Pearson's product moment correlation coefficient. The empirical results of this research give partial evidence of the correlation between emotional intelligence and self-actualisation. A decision support system for multi-objective programming problems

Many concrete problems may be cast in a multi-objective optimisation framework. The redundancy of existing methods for solving multi-objective programming problems susceptible to inconsistencies, coupled with the necessity for making in- herent assumptions before using a given method, make it hard for a nonspecialist to choose a method that ¯ts the situation at hand well. Moreover, using a method blindly, as suggested by the hammer principle (when you only have a hammer, you want everything in your hand to be a nail) is an awkward approach at best and a caricatural one at worst. This brings challenges to the design, development, implementation and deployment of a Decision Support System able to choose a method that is appropriate for a given problem and to apply the chosen method to solve the problem under consideration. The choice of method should be made according to the structure of the problem and the decision maker's opinion. The aim here is to embed a sample of methods representing the main multi-objective programming techniques and to help the decision maker find the most appropriate method for his problem. / Decisions Sciences / M. Persoonlikheid is vanuit 'n behavioristiese sowel as humanistiese paradigma ondersoek en sin vir koherensie vanuit 'n salutogeniese paradigma. Die studie is uitgevoer onder middelvlak bestuurders in 'n finansiele instelling waarvan die totale populasie in 'n gegewe geografiese gebied betrek is. Twee meetinstrumente, naamlik die lewensorientasievraelys (OLQ) en die Myers-Briggs tipe indikator (MBTI) is gebruik op die populasie van 57 bestuurders. Pearson produkmoment-korrel asiekoeffisiente is bereken en 'n variansie-ontleding is gedoen. Die resultate van hierdie studie toon dat daar nie 'n beduidende verband is tussen persoonlikheidstipes en sin vir koherensie nie. Die aanname word gemaak dat 'n verwantskap tussen die twee konstrukte moontlik gevind kan word indien 'n meer geografies verspreide en heterogene proefgroep gebruik word waarin al die persoonlikheidstipes verteenwoordig is. / The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between personality types a11d a salutogenic construct, namely sense of coherence. Personality has been investigated from a behaviouristic as well as a humanistic paradigm and sense of coherence from a salutogenic paradigm. This study has been done on persons on middle management level in a financial institution of which the total population has been approached in a given geographical area. Two measuring instruments, namely the Orientation To Life Questionnaire (OLQ) and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) have been used on the population of 57 managers. Pearson product moment correlation coefficient has been calculated and a variation analysis has been done. The results of this study show that there is no significant relation between personality types and sense of coherence. It is supposed that a relationship between the two constructs might be found if a more heterogenic and geographically spread experimental group is used in such a way that all the personality types are represented. / Psychology / M.A. (Bedryfsielkunde)

Variação na aquisição fonológica : análise da produção da nasal velar em inglês (L2)

Esta tese investiga a aquisição fonológica variável da nasal velar em coda silábica final (como em living ‘vivendo’ e singing ‘cantando’, por exemplo) por aprendizes brasileiros de inglês como segunda língua. O estudo é motivado pela diferença de status da nasal velar em português (L1, primeira língua) e inglês (L2, segunda língua): enquanto na L1 o segmento é realização fonética resultante de assimilação de ponto de articulação (como em atum, em que a nasal bilabial assimila o traço [+dorsal] da vogal precedente realizando-se como velar), na L2 a nasal velar é fonema (como em sin ‘pecado’ x sing ‘cantar’, realizados com a nasal alveolar e velar, respectivamente). Em algumas comunidades de falantes nativos de inglês, palavras derivadas pelo sufixo {ing} (como read.ing ‘lendo’ e study.ing ‘estudando’, por exemplo) constituem um fenômeno de variação linguística estável, em que os falantes alternam a produção das nasais velar e alveolar no final das palavras. Essa variação é estrutural e socialmente condicionada (LABOV, 1994; 2001). Os dados empíricos deste estudo provêm da fala coletada através de gravações com aprendizes de inglês, que pertecem a dois níveis de proficiência: básico e pré-intermediário. São realizadas duas análises formais: uma que explica a variação sistemática na interlíngua, observável no desempenho dos aprendizes, através do software Goldvarb (SANKOFF, TAGLIAMONTE e SMITH, 2015), e outra que formaliza a organização interna dessa gramática variável, através de algoritmos de aprendizagem vinculados à Teoria da Otimidade Estocástica, o Algoritmo de Aprendizagem Gradual (GLA) (BOERSMA e HAYES, 2001) e o ORTO Ajuste Paramétrico (DORNELLES FILHO, 2014). A Análise de Regra Variável demonstrou que a interlíngua é um sistema linguístico sujeito à variação ordenada como as demais línguas naturais, condicionada por aspectos linguísticos (classe morfológica) e extralinguísticos (nível de proficiência). A variação é verificada pela produção oral dos aprendizes, examinada de oitiva, que alterna as nasais palatal (63,6%) e velar (36,4%) em coda silábica final. A análise estocástica revelou um sistema de interlíngua dominado por restrições de Marcação, cuja variação é decorrente do aumento dos valores de ponto de seleção de restrições de Fidelidade. As restrições diretamente envolvidas na aquisição fonológica variável da nasal velar são AGREEplaceVN#, que exige que a sequência Vogal+Nasal em coda final partilhem ponto de articulação, e IDENTnasal, que requer identidade de traço nasal entre as formas presentes no input e no output. As análises realizadas, que representam a língua dos aprendizes em seus aspectos interno e externo, ou, conforme a terminologia de Chomsky ([1965]1 1975), a competência e o desempenho linguísticos, comprovaram a natureza variável da interlíngua e proporcionaram uma reflexão teórica acerca da possibilidade de diálogo entre o estrutural e o social para a explicação de fenômenos linguísticos variáveis. / This thesis investigates the variable phonological acquisition of the velar nasal in final syllabic coda (such as in living ‘vivendo’ and singing ‘cantando’, for example) by Brazilian learners of English as a second language. The study is motivated by the different status of the velar nasal in Portuguese (L1, first language) and in English (L2, second language): while the segment is a phonetic realization of assimilation of place of articulation in the L1 (‘atum’, where the bilabial nasal assimilates the feature [+dorsal] of the preceding vowel, being realized as velar), the velar nasal is a phoneme in the L2 (sin ‘pecado’ x sing ‘cantar’, realized as the alveolar and velar nasal, respectively). In some native English-speaking communities, words derived from the suffix {ing} (such as read.ing ‘lendo’, study.ing ‘estudando’, for example) are in linguistic stable variation, in which the speakers alternate the production of the alveolar and velar nasal the velar nasal at the end of words. This variation is both structurally and socially conditioned (LABOV, 1994; 2001). The empirical data of this study were collected through recordings with the informants, who belong to two levels of proficiency: basic and pre-intermediate. Two formal analysis are made: one that explains the observable systematic variation in the Interlanguage, through the software Goldvarb (SANKOFF, TAGLIAMONTE and SMITH, 2015) and another that formalizes the internal organization of this variable grammar, through gradual learning algorithms associated to the Stochastic Optimality Theory, the Gradual Learning Algorithm (GLA) (BOERSMA and HAYES, 2001) and the ORTO Ajuste Paramétrico (DORNELLES FILHO, 2014). The Variable Rule Analysis has demonstrated that interlanguage is a linguistic system subject to ordered variation as in all the other natural languages, conditioned by linguistic aspects (morphological class) and extralinguistic ones (level of proficiency). The variation is verified by the oral production of the learners, examined by hearing analysis, which alternates the palatal nasal (63,6%) The stochastic analysis has revealed an Interlanguage system dominated by Markedness constraints, where variation is due to the increase on the values of selection points for Faithfulness constraints. The constraints directly involved in the variable phonological acquisition of the velar nasal are AGREEplaceVN#, which demands the sequence Vowel+Nasal in final coda to share place of articulation, and IDENTnasal, which demands feature identity [+nasal] between input and output forms. The analyses made, which represent the learners’ language in its internal and external aspects, or, according to Chomsky’s terminology ([1965] 1975), the linguistic competence and performance, have proved the variable nature of the Interlanguage and have enabled a theoretical reflection upon the possibility of dialogue between the structural and the social to the explanation of variable linguistic phenomena.

Harmonia vocálica de altura no português de Porto Alegre/RS : análise de um processo variável pela teoria da otimidade

Esta tese investiga por meio da Teoria da Otimidade Estocástica (BOERSMA; HAYES, 2001) o processo de harmonia vocálica de altura (HVA), que envolve as vogais médias pretônicas /e, o/ e as torna [i, u] quando há uma vogal alta na sílaba seguinte, como em menino~minino, fortuna~furtuna. O estudo tem como motivação o fato de que a maior parte das pesquisas realizadas sobre HV em português brasileiro no dialeto gaúcho tiveram como foco uma análise na linha Laboviana da sociolinguística quantitativa (BISOL, 1981, SCHWINDT, 1995, 2002, CASAGRANDE, 2004, FERNANDES, 2014). Os dados empíricos desta pesquisa provêm da fala coletada por meio de entrevistas sociolinguísticas utilizadas no estudo de Fernandes (2014), que fazem parte do banco de dados VARSUL – Variação Linguística no Sul do Brasil, e pertencem a amostra chamada Jovens Escolarizados, com estudantes de 16 a 23 anos, de Porto Alegre. Os dados foram metodologicamente separados em 3 diferentes categorias, correspondentes ao tipo de vocábulo, devido à possibilidade da influência de fatores morfológicos na aplicação e/ou restrição da regra de HVA: Formas Nominais Não- Derivadas (FNND), Formas Nominais Derivadas (FND), e Formas Verbais (FV). Buscamos propor restrições de marcação ou fidelidade para tratar a HV como um processo envolvendo o traço de altura [+alto], com espraiamento regressivo, a fim de explicar propriedades que bloqueiem ou permitam o alçamento das vogais, com base nas proporções de pesquisas quantitativas que foram realizadas anteriormente.O estudo visou propor uma análise da harmonia vocálica com restrições universais para poder explanar padrões em foco nos dados, como homorganicidade e heterorganicidade da vogal-alvo e vogal-gatilho A análise também tornou possível uma observação analítica e particular dos dados, diferentemente dos estudos variacionistas prévios. As restrições universais e requisitos fonotáticos foram buscados no espírito da Teoria da Otimidade Clássica (TO, PRINCE; SMOLENSKY, [1993] 2004, MCCARTHY; PRINCE, 1995). Esta análise também se apoiou em restrições e traços de pesquisas anteriores de caráter similar sobre o tema (MATZENAUER; MIRANDA, 2003, LEE; OLIVEIRA, 2003, ALVES, 2011, BOHN, 2014, BATTISTI; FERNANDES 2017). Para representar e modelar a gramática da HVA variável utilizou-se o Gradual Learning Algorithm (GLA), de Boersma e Hayes (2001). A análise da HVA com ranking contínuo demonstrou a dominância das restrições License, Agree e de fidelidade. Arestrição que exige a homorganicidade está ranqueada com valores mais baixos na escala contínua para as FNND. A variabilidade está presente em todas as formas, sendo menos presente nas FV, e representa a existência de mais de um mapeamento inputoutput. Os resultados evidenciam que os falantes do dialeto gaúcho realizam HVA com mais frequência em uma sequência vocálica heterorgânica com uma vogal alta tônica contígua para formas nominais em geral, e com mais frequência em uma sequência vocálica homorgânica com vogal alta contígua para as formas verbais. A exigência de que a vogal-alvo deve ser seguida por uma vogal alta tônica é mais importante para formas nominais do que para verbos em geral.As análises estocásticas realizadas, que representam a gramática dos falantes do dialeto em questão, atestaram a natureza variável da HV, com proporções baixas de realização. A dominância de restrições foi demonstrada no ranking contínuo da TO Estocástica. Também foi possível realizar reflexões e direcionamentos para futuros estudos sobre o tema, como a influência de consoantes adjacentes à vogal alvo da harmonia. / This thesis investigates through Stochastic Optimality Theory the Height Vowel Harmony phenomenon (HVH), which raises the pretonic mid vowels /e, o/ to [i, u] when there is a high vowel in the next syllable, as in m[e]nino~minino ‘boy’, f[o]rtuna~f[u]rtuna ‘fortune’. The study is motivated by the fact that most research done on VH in Brazilian Portuguese in the Gaucho dialect focused on an analysis of the Labovian line of quantitative sociolinguistics (BISOL, 1981, SCHWINDT, 1995, 2002, CASAGRANDE, 2004, FERNANDES, 2014). The empirical data of this research are from naturally occurring speech collected through interviews used in the study of Fernandes (2014) and are part of the database VARSUL - Linguistic Variation in the South of Brazil, specifically the sample called Jovens Escolarizados, with students from 16 to 23 years old. The words of the sample were methodologically separated into 3 different categories, corresponding to the type of word, due to the possibility of the influence of morphological factors in the realization and/or restriction of the VH rule: Non-Derivational Nominal Words (NDNW), Derivational Nominal Words (DNW), Verb Class (VC). We sought to propose markedness and faithfulness constraints to treat VH as an analysis with the [+High] feature and regressive spreading, in order to explain properties that block or allow vowels to be raised or acquire the [high] feature, based on the proportions of previous quantitative researches. The objectives of the study aimed to propose an analysis of VH with universal constraints to be able to explain patterns in focus in the data, such as homorganicity and heterorganicity of the target-vowel and trigger-vowel The universal constraints and phonotatic requirements were chosen in the spirit of Classic Optimality Theory (OT, PRINCE; SMOLENSKY, 1993, 2004, MCCARTHY; PRINCE, 1995). This analysis is also based on constraints and features of previous similar studies on Brazilian Portuguese VH (MATZENAUER; MIRANDA, 2003, LEE; OLIVEIRA, 2003, ALVES, 2011, BOHN, 2014, BATTISTI; FERNANDES 2017). To represent and model the variable HVA grammar we used the Gradual Learning Algorithm (GLA), by Boersma and Hayes (2001). The HVA analysis with continuous ranking demonstrated the dominance of the License, Agree and faithfulness constraints families. The constraint that requires homorganicity is ranked with lower values in the continuous scale for the NDNW. The variability is present in all categories, being less present in the Verb Class, and represents the existence of more than one input-output mapping. The results show that speakers of the Gaucho dialect perform HVH more frequently in a heterorganic vowel sequence with a contiguous high tonic vowel for nominal words in general, and HVH is more frequent in a homorganic vowel sequence with contiguous high vowel for verbal words. The requirement that the targetvowel must be followed by a high tonic vowel is more important for nominal words than for verbs in general. The stochastic analyzes carried out, which represent the grammar of the speakers of the dialect in question, attested the variable nature of the HVH, which, with low proportions, demonstrated in the continuous ranking of the Stochastic OT the dominance of constraint families, and also provided reflections and directions for future studies on the subject, such as analysis of speech data using ultrasound and the role of consonants adjacent to the harmony target.
