The study of fast-response and polarization independent diffraction grating by using blue phase liquid crystalsLin, Shun-Mao 27 August 2012 (has links)
In this study, the phase grating was investigated by using electro-optical characteristics of blue phase liquid crystals(BPLCs) such as fast-response and optically isotropic etc. The BPLC units was affected by distribution of periodically electric field and then changed the cubic structure into others, when applying voltage in etched electrode of grating pattern. A linearly polarized light is incident upon the sample and experience the periodic difference of index, and diffraction effect was generated. In order to find out the best conditions of these liquid crystals device, we discussed different factor such as angle of linearly polarized light, operating temperature of grating, cooling rate and electrode structure.

Taiwan-Thailand Economic Cooperation Agreement Feasibility AnalysisHsu, Lan-hsin 05 September 2012 (has links)
This thesis from a constructivist approach to explore the neoliberal interdependence theory, the structural power of nationalism theory, in constructed out of Mainland China to control the East Asian system, how restricting contact sign, Taiwan and Thailand the opportunities of Economic Cooperation Agreement (ECA).
Learned from the theory and data analysis, we know that Thailand is relatively dependent on the extent of Taiwan, and the interdependence of economic and social exchange behavior of multi-track each other. Although the basis of comparative advantage that favor positive contact Taiwan and Thailand signed the ECA and the optimum behavior of integration, limited to the new amendment to Article 190 of the Constitution of Thailand must get Congress to vote on the signing of an international agreement approved by the provisions, as well as the rise of Mainland China in East Asia caused by nationalism asymmetry interdependent the structural power constraints, resulting in consistent sign of Taiwan and Thailand ECA system failure, the phenomenon of zero, contrary to the rules of the market liberal institutionalism theory.
How to break through Mainland China in the East Asian the structural power system constructed of path dependence, reversing the international status of Taiwan disadvantage, from the analysis of the theory, competence structure and fieldwork, Taiwan and Thailand signed ECA feasibility contact program with specific practices.

Characterization of thermo-mechanical and long-term behaviors of multi-layered composite materialsNair, Aravind R. 02 June 2009 (has links)
This study presents characterization of thermo-mechanical viscoelastic and long-term
behaviors of thick-section multi-layered fiber reinforced polymer composite materials.
The studied multi-layered systems belong to a class of thermo-rheologically complex
materials, in which both stress and temperature affect the time-dependent material
response. The multi-layered composites consist of alternating layers of unidirectional
fiber (roving) and randomly oriented continuous filament mat. Isothermal creep-recovery
tests at various stresses and temperatures are performed on E-glass/vinylester and Eglass/
polyester off-axis specimens. Analytical representation of a nonlinear single
integral equation is applied to model the thermo-mechanical viscoelastic responses for
each off-axis specimen. Long-term material behaviors are then obtained through vertical
and horizontal time shifting using analytical and graphical shifting procedures. Linear
extrapolation of transient creep compliance is used to extend the material responses for
longer times. The extended long-term creep strains of the uniaxial E-glass/vinylester
specimens are verified with the long-term experimental data of Scott and Zureick (1998).
A sensitivity analyses is then conducted to examine the impact of error in material
parameter characterizations to the overall long-term material behaviors. Finally, the
calibrated long-term material parameters are used to study the long-term behavior of
multi-layered composite structures. For this purpose, an integrated micromechanical
material and finite element structural analyses is employed. Previously developed
viscoelastic micromodels of multi-layered composites are used to generate the effective
nonlinear viscoelastic responses of the studied composite systems and then implemented
as a material subroutine in Abaqus finite element code. Several long-term composite
structures are analyzed, that is; I-shaped columns and flat panels under axial compression, and a sandwich beam under the point bending and transmission tower under
lateral forces. It is shown that the integrated micromechanical-finite element model is
capable of predicting the long-term behavior of the multilayered composite structures.

Connecting Land Use and Transportation Toward Sustainable Development: A Case Study of Houston-Galveston Metropolitan AreaLee, Jae Su 2009 December 1900 (has links)
How do land use characteristics affect individual and household travel behavior
in a regional context? Can the investigation justify the land use policies to reduce
automobile dependence and achieve the goals of sustainable development in the
metropolitan areas? Previous research enhanced our understanding of the connections
between land use and travel behavior. It also provided implications for managing
automobile-dependent travel behavior. However, there are questions still left
unanswered about the causal connections between them, and the effectiveness of the
land use policies to manage travel demand.
To address the issues, attention is focused on the effects of land use measures on
travel behavior outcomes from different modeling perspectives. The travel demand
modeling explores the associations between land use and travel behavior. In addition, the
causal modeling helps clarify the causal connections between them. It includes the
structural equation models (SEMs) and the directed acyclic graphs (DAGs). The study focuses on six counties of the Houston-Galveston Area Council (HGAC) area. Travel
behavior outcomes contain individual mode choice, household automobile trip
generation and household total vehicle miles traveled (VMT). Three dimensions (i.e.,
density, diversity and design) of six land use measures are considered, which are
computed using quarter-mile buffers for both trip origins and destinations. Different
travel outcomes and modeling strategies are examined for different travel purposes.
The significance of land use measures in affecting travel behavior is found to be
evident, while varying to a certain degree according to trip purposes, travel outcomes
and methodologies. For individual model choice, multinomial logit (MNL) models, the
SEMs and the DAGs for different trip purposes support the hypothesis that land use
measures directly affect individual mode choice behavior when other factors are kept
constant. There is also evidence from causal models that land use factors indirectly
influence it through travel time. For household automobile trip generation, there is no
evidence to assert that land use measures at origin significantly affect household
automobile trip rates when travel cost and socioeconomic variables are controlled.
However, it is confirmed that land use measures have indirect causal connections with
automobile trips through travel costs for all trip purposes. For household total VMT, it is
found that land use patterns around residential locations are not only significantly
associated, but also causally connected with household VMT. To summarize, compact
development with high density and improved network design generally contribute to the
reduction in automobile dependent travel patterns in the HGAC region.

Use of social information for habitat selection in songbirdsFarrell, Shannon Leigh 2011 May 1900 (has links)
Habitat selection research has focused on the role of vegetative and geologic habitat characteristics or antagonistic behavioral interactions. Conspecifics can confer information about habitat quality and provide positive density-dependent effects that may result in improved fitness, resulting in positive behavioral responses to conspecifics as a habitat selection strategy. I conducted 3 replicated, manipulative experiments to investigate use of conspecific cues in habitat selection for the golden-cheeked warbler (Dendroica chrysoparia) using simulated conspecific vocalizations during pre-settlement and post-breeding periods, across a range of woodland canopy cover. I measured territory density, pairing, and fledging success in paired treatment and control units. Territory density was >2 times higher in treatment units across the range of canopy (P = 0.02). Pairing success was positively correlated with territory density (P = 0.008). Territory density response was higher for pre-settlement than post-breeding treatment (P = 0.004). I found pre-settlement and post-breeding conspecific cues influence golden-cheeked warbler habitat selection, inducing settlement in previously unoccupied areas, and producing aggregations within areas of similar vegetative characteristics. Better understanding of social information use in habitat selection can improve our understanding of species distributions, yielding more accurate predictive distribution models; improve our ability to predict impacts of habitat changes on habitat use, survival, reproduction, and ultimately fitness; and provide a potential tool for attracting individuals to restored or managed sites.

A Study on the Competitive Strategies of Taiwan IC Packaging New Entrants Based on Path Dependence TheoryChen, Yeh-shun 01 September 2004 (has links)
Taiwan¡¦s IC foundry has truly emerged as important roles in Taiwan¡¦s electronic industries, whose fast growth has successfully been in the construction of Taiwan¡¦s economic miracle. Through the differentiation strategy, TSMC, the largest and most successful dedicated IC foundry in the world, expands and develops its business from bottom to top. It also has well driven IC industries a Cluster Effect, prosperously fostering the industries in its supply chain, from IC design and manufacturing to packaging and testing, even rapid growth of Taiwan¡¦s personal computer and peripheral industries relatively.
Long-term, increasing growth for IC industries had earned many companies to invest low entry barrier factories - IC packaging that needs lower technical expertise and less capital. However, against semiconductor industrial booming and bust cycles, and the phenomenon known as the Bullwhip Effect in supply chains, most packaging factories have been confronting with the challenges in worse and more competitive environments. Those factories, even the same for the new entrants, actively adopted all different types of competitive, cooperative and integrated strategies, not only for profits but survival.
In this study, based on path dependence theory, the competitive strategies among ten new IC packaging companies were introduced to discuss, examine, and more further verify the linkages between their competitive strategies and developing paths. The conclusion indicates that competitive strategies of positive developing path may offer new entrants a successful, experienced model to copy with.
1.The advancement of Taiwan IC packaging new entrants gave evidence for developing path¡¦s model. That is to say, different competitive strategies will result in different developing paths.
2.The competitive strategies of the positively developing path¡¦s model are helpful for new entrants to develop positively. Strategic positioning helps to concentrate company¡¦s resources onto her beneficial path to develop. Innovative strategies will help to break through the limitations of path and guide the developing path to success. Competitive advantage helps the developing path come into positive cycles.
3.IC packaging companies have to review and react very often to manage their competitive strategies when the developing path is influenced by the variances of inner and outer environments.

The Change of Constitutional System in Taiwan: The Perspectives of Old and New InstitutionalismChang, Chun-hao 02 July 2007 (has links)
In recent years, methodology of new institutionalism has gradually been the crucial feature of the researches on constitutional system. By pointing out the political actors who affect constitutional operation, the context of institution that constructs constitutional rules, and the social structure accompanied with constitutional culture, etc., the new institutionalism even replaces the old institutionalism in constitutional analysis. However, due to incompatible roots in methodology, new institutionalism has raised more and more disputes. In addition, derived from the same origin that presented historically and methodically, new institutionalism and its old counterpart share some assumptions that make it difficult to divide on institutional approach. Therefore, by the comparative viewpoint of old and new institutionalism approaches, this thesis will integrate them into the analysis of institutional change, and apply to the constitutional change in R.O.C. (1947-2007). Through this way, this thesis will base on the design and operation of the constitutional system of R.O.C. and carry on cause and effect analysis according to the historical context. By several specific time sequences of the path of institutional change, include: crucial moments and changes of the system origin, institutional structure and crisis met, interactive actors¡¦ preferences and tactics, this thesis will also plan to observe the starting point, development of the path and assess its prospect. Moreover, abide by the old and new institutionalism approaches are derived from the same origin, meanwhile, the concepts of ¡§constitution¡¨ and ¡§constitutionalism¡¨ also do combine with them, the purpose of this thesis is to confirm the dimensions of ¡§constitutional law¡¨, ¡§constitutional operation¡¨ and ¡§spirit of constitutionalism¡¨ in Taiwan¡¦s semi-presidential system. Thus, by the comparative viewpoint of old and new institutionalism approaches, this thesis will analyze three main problems of Taiwan¡¦s constitutional operations revealed by the president-premier-Legislative Yuan interactions through the perspectives of ¡§constitutional law¡¨, ¡§constitutional operation¡¨ and ¡§spirit of constitutionalism.¡¨ The concern of this thesis is to establish a new analytical framework which could find out constitutional problems effectively, and propose the solutions.

Exploring the Knowledge Sharing Intention of Business Employees with Relations Model TheoryLu, Chun-tai 16 July 2007 (has links)
With a view to achieve the ultimate goal of a permanent development, operation, and growth, to any business and enterprise, the strategy of knowledge management must be reinforced, and the sooner the better. In despite of those new and high interests shown toward the organization-embedded knowledge, not much concrete finding has been obtained regarding how and why employees are reluctant to share what they know.
In our research, we proposed to base on the Relations Model Theory to explore how different relation models, cultivated and shaped by different corporate cultures, give their influences on the willingness of knowledge sharing from employees. In the mean time, with a view to get closer to the realistic circumstance in the office, we give it a shot to include additional moderating variables, task inter-dependence, as well as time-of-cooperation, into our full research framework, aiming to see if they will disturb the influencing processes between the four principal relations and the willingness of employees to share their knowledge.
The result reflects the distinct impact from communal sharing and equality matching on the willingness of sharing, while a subtle but negative impact of market pricing on the sharing willingness. There is no clear effect of authority ranking. Furthermore, in the analysis of interaction mode including additional moderators, the result has exhibited that task inter-dependence does moderate the relationship between communal sharing / equality matching / market pricing and the notion of sharing, while time-of-cooperation also adjusts the influencing processes between communal sharing, equality matching, market pricing, and willingness of sharing.
This analysis and study grant us some clues regarding how corporate culture would eventually leverage employees¡¦ intention in sharing their knowledge, and advise the business organizations how they should correctly formulate the knowledge management strategy and activities to augment the knowledge inter-flows between employees.

The Mediating Role Of Metacognition On The Relationship Among Depression/anxiety/negative Impact Of Life Experiences And Smoking DependenceYaris, Seval 01 January 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of metacognition as a mediator of the relationship between smoking dependence and depression/anxiety/ negative impact of life experiences. A sample of 202 adult smokers completed the following questionnaires: Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), Life Experiences Survey (LES), Meta-Cognitions Questionnaire-30 (MCQ-30), and Fagerströ / m Test of Nicotine Dependence (FTND). The path analyses were used to test a mediation model in which depression, anxiety, or negative impact of life experiences was the predictor of metacognition, which in turn was a predictor of smoking dependence. Twelve mediation models were tested using total scores of metacognition, and its factors including positive beliefs about worry, negative beliefs about worry, lack of cognitive confidence, beliefs about need to control thoughts, and cognitive self-consciousness as mediator variables. The models included depression, anxiety, or negative impact of life experiences as independent variables / and smoking dependence as dependent variable. The results suggested that neither total metacognition score nor the individual metacognitive dimensions did mediate the relationship between smoking dependence and depression/anxiety/negative impact of life experiences. The results and limitations, as well as the implications of these findings, were discussed by referring to the relevant literature.
