A Study of Scalability and Performance of Solaris Zones

<p>This thesis presents a quantitative evaluation of an operating system virtualization technology known as Solaris Containers or Solaris Zones, with a special emphasis on measuring the influence of a security technology known as Solaris Trusted Extensions. Solaris Zones is an operating system-level (OS-level) virtualization technology embedded in the Solaris OS that primarily provides containment of processes within the abstraction of a complete operating system environment. Solaris Trusted Extensions presents a specific configuration of the Solaris operating system that is designed to offer multi-level security functionality.</p><p>Firstly, we examine the scalability of the OS with respect to an increasing number of zones. Secondly, we evaluate the performance of zones in three scenarios. In the first scenario we measure - as a baseline - the performance of Solaris Zones on a 2-CPU core machine in the standard configuration that is distributed as part of the Solaris OS. In the second scenario we investigate the influence of the number of CPU cores. In the third scenario we evaluate the performance in the presence of a security configuration known as Solaris Trusted Extensions. To evaluate performance, we calculate a number of metrics using the AIM benchmark. We calculate these benchmarks for the global zone, a non-global zone, and increasing numbers of concurrently running non-global zones. We aggregate the results of the latter to compare aggregate system performance against single zone performance.</p><p>The results of this study demonstrate the scalability and performance impact of Solaris Zones in the Solaris OS. On our chosen hardware platform, Solaris Zones scales to about 110 zones within a short creation time (i.e., less than 13 minutes per zone for installation, configuration, and boot.) As the number of zones increases, the measured overhead of virtualization shows less than 2% of performance decrease for most measured benchmarks, with one exception: the benchmarks for memory and process management show that performance decreases of 5-12% (depending on the sub-benchmark) are typical. When evaluating the Trusted Extensions-based security configuration, additional small performance penalties were measured in the areas of Disk/Filesystem I/O and Inter Process Communication. Most benchmarks show that aggregate system performance is higher when distributing system load across multiple zones compared to running the same load in a single zone.</p>

Impact of Occupational Health Interventions in Indonesia

Although the Ministry of Health, Indonesia, has achieved some successful occupational health interventions, published literature on such interventions in Indonesia remains scarce. This study utilized mixed methods of qualitative and quantitative research for the years 2010 and 2011. The qualitative study covered respondents in West, Central, and East Java Provinces to gather stakeholders' perspectives on the impact, effectiveness, adoption, implementation, maintenance, and barriers of occupational health services for informal sectors in Indonesia. The quantitative portion measured the impact of occupational health training for community health officers using Reach, Efficacy, Adoption, Implementation and Maintenance (RE-AIM) dimensions. West Java, as a province with a center for occupational health referral services (Balai Kesehatan Kerja Masyarakat/BKKM), was compared to Central Java as a province without BKKM. The qualitative study showed that interventions improved knowledge of and engagement in occupational health among workers and health officers. Among other improvements, occupational health training resulted in some owners of food processing home industries switching from non-food to food-based coloring. The advocacy program improved local governments' political commitment to funding the occupational health program. The BKKM played important roles in delivering occupational health in West Java Province. The quantitative study showed the efficacy variable to have the lowest p-value (p:<.0001). Meanwhile, the reach variable showed on the second lowest p-value among RE-AIM components (p: <.0190). Moreover, education (p-value: 0.0001), job type (p-value: 0.0015), and job duration (p-value: 0.0289) were considered individual variables that could have contributed to the differences in RE-AIM scores between Central and West Java. The qualitative study confirmed that occupational health interventions in Indonesia resulted in some positive impacts related to safe and healthy work-related behaviors. The quantitative study found that West Java, a province with BKKM, had a better RE-AIM score as compared to Central Java, a province without BKKM. Some individual variables such as education, job type, and job duration could have contributed to the differences in RE-AIM scores between Central and West Java. The future direction of the occupational health-training program should consider the participants' diversity in their education, job type, and job duration.

This Master thesis was written in collaboration with the Kalmar-based consulting company Sederkvist Kommunikation. The purpose was to explore the market potential for Sederkvist Kommunikations new software Bellman Marketing. Based on these results a launch plan was created and advoice were given to Sederkvist Kommunikation as to how their new administrative tool could be introduced on the market. Data were collected through semi-structured telephone interviews. The population was Swedish so called Gazelle-companies (growth-companies listed yearly by the business newspaper Dagens Industri) and totally 27 units were examined. Analysis indicated that there was a relatively large market potential for Bellman Marketing among Swedish fast-growing companies. The market does however not perceive a need for the software at this point, thus this need has to be pointed out first by Sederkvist Kommunikation. By effective market segmentation and with messages suited for target customers, the launch of Bellman Marketing can be successful.

Why AIM? - Educator Perspectives and Implementation of an Instructional Method for Teaching Core French as a Second Language in Ontario

Since 2003, the Canadian government has repeatedly called for research into innovative ways to teach Core French (CF) – a non-immersion program, where French as a Second Language (FSL) is taught on a daily basis, or a few times per week. This exploratory study investigates the driving forces behind the widespread popularity of a CF method called the Accelerative Integrated Method (AIM), which combines target language use with gestures, high-frequency vocabulary, and drama to accelerate the development of fluency from the onset of classroom instruction. In order to learn more about the “meaningfulness” of this growing trend (Fullan, 2007), this mixed-method inquiry attempts to shift the focus from product to process, comparing educator perspectives and AIM implementation within two Ontario contexts: (a) where AIM was mandated for elementary (Grades 4-6) FSL instruction, and (b) where AIM was an optional method for FSL teachers to use (or not). Survey and interview data were collected from and triangulated across a variety of educators from both contexts, including FSL consultants (n = 18), principals (n = 8), CF teachers (n = 9), and one Ontario Ministry of Education representative. Four semi-structured interviews and multiple observations were also conducted with those CF teachers who were using AIM (n = 8). An additional CF teacher who had attempted to use AIM, and had subsequently rejected it, was also interviewed. Findings showed that AIM implementation and educator perspectives did not vary significantly based on whether AIM was mandated or optional for CF instruction. A clear preference emerged towards using AIM and the accompanying resources during the beginning stages of CF instruction. Discussion about the growing popularity of AIM was positive; however, it also exposed a range of emotions about when and how AIM should be used. In terms of implementation, while some AIM routines, activities, and strategies were used by all, each AIM teacher exercised their agency while using the method, supplementing and adapting for different reasons. Implications include the need to reexamine the objectives of micro-level AIM policies, recognize the adaptability of AIM, and consider including detailed observations in future research linking AIM to student achievement.

The thesis brings out and analyse pedagogy approach to the education by the experience. The theoretical part characterizes basic concepts of the education and the upbringing, experience pedagogy and its parts. The thesis describes historical evolution of experience pedagogy and analyses the basement of pedagogical approach to the experience education. The thesis provides the summary of activities of experience pedagogy that can be used at school during leisure time. The practical part contains the probe of using experience pedagogy activities at schools during the leisure time. The skiing courses were selected for the probe. Teachers in all three courses used the principals of experience pedagogy but their procedures are not well processed according to unfamiliarity with experience pedagogy. The strongest weakness arose at the feedback phase. I researched that the vocational knowledge is essential for children education though positive pedagogical approach. The personality of the teacher is significant point of view because the personality of the teacher is the basement for everything else. According to my research I presume that experience pedagogy approach has great value and will be used more for the education and the upbringing of children and the youth.

The goal of the thesis is to specify the position of homeschooling in the Czech Republic and to discuss its effectiveness in the fulfilment of the common educational aims. For this reason, the theoretical part is firstly dealing with the common educational aims, and their official formulation in the Czech Republic. The thesis then continues to focus on homeschooling and its capabilities in fulfilling these aims, in which these areas are crucial: the family as an environment where learning takes place, current legislation, individualization, socialisation, and the change from home-schooling to regular schooling. The afore mentioned area is discussed in more detail in the research part of the thesis, where we find the statements of the graduates of homeschooling which were gained through a questionnaire. As a whole the thesis offers an unconventional point of view on education and provides specific tips for parents, pupils and teachers. The topic of this thesis is change management. A summary of the topic is made in the first part of this thesis so that a reader has the theoretical background to read further. In the second part, the author describes five most important change management methods. These methods are described, analyzed and compared to one another. Five hypotheses about the most influential factors to the outcome of a change project were created out of the analysis. These hypotheses cover the entire span of a typical change project and are tested in the practical part of this thesis. The practical part of the thesis relies on a thorough case studies analysis and interviews. By analyzing the case studies and the interviews, the author was able to judge the validity of set hypotheses and create a set of recommendations for future change projects. These recommendations are based on many real situations and therefore are valuable for future reference. The role of information technology in change management is also emphasized at the end of the thesis.
