Feeling Set Up by The Set-up : A Study on Swedish Junior High School Students’ Understanding of Phrasal Verbs

Jonsson, Agnes January 2018 (has links)
Existing research on phrasal verbs is ample due to their prevalent existence in the English language and the difficulties they bring out as a result of their lack of transparency (Liu, 2011, p. 661). However, more research is necessary to cover new generations of English learners who cross paths with phrasal verbs. This study will provide empirical information on (i) whether Swedish students in 7th -9 th grade understand frequently used phrasal verbs better than nonfrequent ones, (ii) if phrasal verbs are easier to understand in productive- or perceptive tasks, (iii) if the students’ first languages (L1) interfere with this understanding, or (iv) if there is a difference in understanding phrasal verbs which are more common in AmE or BrE. The factors of second language acquisition taken into account in the analysis are explicit and implicit exposure of English, English varieties, crosslinguistic influences and idiomaticity. Chameliec & Weiss (2008, p. 381) define a phrasal verb as “a simple verb combined with an adverb or a preposition, or sometimes both, to make a new verb with a meaning that is different from that of the simple verb, e.g., go in for, win over, blow up”. The data was elicited with a questionnaire in three parts: one part about the participants background information and two parts on phrasal verb understanding, both in contextualized examples and without context. In the analysis, factors such as the construction of the questionnaire and choice of phrasal verbs need to be considered. The results demonstrate that Swedish junior high school students understand about 50% of the tested phrasal verbs in both parts of the questionnaire. More frequent ones are easier to understand, more so the AmE PVs, and the perceptive task generated a slightly higher percentage of correct answers. The textbooks did not have explicit sections on phrasal verbs, or even formulaic expressions in general. However, the books contained vocabulary boxes with a few different phrasal verbs, which also occurred in the texts. Since no explicit teaching method has been applied in these classes, doing so might increase the general frequency of correct answers. Furthermore, no conclusive results can be made regarding crosslinguistic influences, however, hypotheses on positive transfer can be made.

DISCOVERY OF NEW ANTIMICROBIAL OPTIONS AND EVALUATION OF AMINOGLYCOSIDE RESISTANCE ENZYME-ASSOCIATED RESISTANCE EPIDEMIC

Holbrook, Selina Y. L. 01 January 2018 (has links)
The extensive and sometimes incorrect and noncompliant use of various types of antimicrobial agents has accelerated the development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). In fact, AMR has become one of the greatest global threat to human health in this era. The broad-spectrum antibiotics aminoglycosides (AGs) display excellent potency against most Gram-negative bacteria, mycobacteria, and some Gram-positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus. The AG antibiotics amikacin, gentamicin, kanamycin, and tobramycin are still commonly prescribed in the U.S.A. for the treatment of serious infections. Unfortunately, bacteria evolve to acquire resistance to AGs via four different mechanisms: i) changing in membrane permeability to resist drugs from entering, ii) upregulating efflux pumps for active removal of intracellular AGs, iii) modifying the antimicrobial target(s) to prevent drugs binding to their targets, and iv) acquiring resistance enzymes to chemically inactivate the compounds. Amongst all, the acquisition of resistance enzymes, AG-modifying enzymes (AMEs), is the most common resistance mechanism identified. Depending on the chemistry each enzyme catalyzes, AMEs can be further divided into AG N-acetyltransferases (AACs), AG O-phosphotransferases (APHs), and AG O-nucleotidyltransferases. To overcome AME-related resistance, we need to better understand these resistance enzymes and further seek ways to either escape or inhibit their actions. In this dissertation, I summarized my efforts to characterize the AAC(6') domain and its mutant enzymes from a bifunctional AME, AAC(6')-Ie/APH(2")-Ia as well as another common AME, APH(3')-IIa. I also explained my attempt to inhibit the action of various AAC enzymes using metal salts. In an effort to explore the current resistance epidemic, I evaluated the resistance against carbapenem and AG antibiotics and the correlation between the resistance profiles and the AME genes in a collection of 122 Pseudomonas aeruginosa clinical isolates obtained from the University of Kentucky Hospital System. Besides tackling the resistance mechanisms in bacteria, I have also attempted to explore a new antifungal option by repurposing an existing antipsychotic drug, bromperidol, and a panel of its derivatives into a combination therapy with the azole antifungals against a variety of pathogenic yeasts and filamentous fungi.

Tratamento AnaerÃbio do LÃquido da Casca de Coco Verde / Anaerobic treatment of Coconut Husk Liquor (CHL)utilizing UASB reactor.

Alex Miranda de AraÃjo 21 February 2008 (has links)
A razÃo AGV/alcalinidade bicarbonato ficou sempre inferior a 0,40. / With the aim of reusing the agroindustry waste and aggregating value to the productive chain of immature coconut, Embrapa AgroindÃstria Tropical (Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation, Tropical Agroindustry National Centre) has developed a system for processing this raw material. During the pressing stage, the Coconut Husk Liquor (CHL) is generated. It contains high concentration of organic matter, with Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) varying from 60 to 80 g/L, including phenolic compounds and sugars. In this work, the performance of an Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket Reactor (UASB) was evaluated for CHL treatment. The lab-scale UASB reactor (16.8 L) was operated during 222 days increasing the organic loading rate (OLR) from 2.2 kgCOD/m3.d to 10 kgCOD/m3.d. The UASB reactor performance was evaluated based on influent and effluent COD and total phenolic compounds (tannin); sludge specific methanogenic activity (SMA) and anaerobic toxicity; biogas production and composition; pH, alkalinity and volatile fatty acids (VFA). Results showed that UASB reactor can be used for pre-treatment of CHL, showing stability during the operation period, with COD removal efficiency higher than 80%, phenolics compounds removal efficiency of around 48%. The ratio AGV/alkalinity was always lower than 0,30. Biogas presented 75% of methane on its composition. Toxicity tests demonstrated that CHL was not toxic to the methanogenic consortia.

Réalisation première : puissance et réalisation dans la psychologie d'Aristote / First realization : power and realization in Aristotle's psychology

Yücefer, Hakan 14 December 2015 (has links)
Readers of Aristotle’s De anima often hold that the tenor of his account consists in the application of hylomorphism to soul-body relations. The part played by potentiality and actuality in Aristotle’s psychology has been somewhat overlooked while hylomorphic analyses prevail in the literature. The objective of our study is to assess the respective contributions of these two basic Aristotelian ontological couples to the study of animate beings. What are the scope and limitations of psychological hylomorphism? What role does the distinction between different levels of potentiality and actuality play in the DA and in the other treaties that deal with animate beings? What are the conceptual means that enable Aristotle to define the soul, to disentangle problems relative to soul-body relations and to bring together his psychological doctrine with his zoological research? Through an examination of these questions, the present study seeks to spell out how the so-called “first realization” fits in with the Aristotelian study of the soul and the animate.

Ruhlmann, Sandrine 20 December 2006 (has links) (PDF)

Gerard, Mathias 13 October 2010 (has links) (PDF)

Swedish upper secondary school teachers and their attitudes towards AmE, BrE, and Mid-Atlantic English.

Ainasoja, Heidi January 2010 (has links)

The aim of this essay is to investigate what English teachers’ attitudes are towards British English, American English and Mid-Atlantic English. What variety of English do teachers use in Swedish upper secondary schools today and what are their reasons for using that variety? Do upper secondary school teachers think it is important to expose students to several varieties of English and do they teach differences (e.g. vocabulary and spelling) between varieties? The material is based on a questionnaire, which 20 participating teachers from five different upper secondary schools in Gävleborg answered. The study showed that there is an even distribution between the varieties used and taught. British English was preferred by teachers working the longest time while both AmE and MAE seemed to be growing in popularity among the younger teachers. Of the 20 teachers, 18 considered teaching differences to students since it gives them a chance to communicate effectively with people from other English speaking countries.
