Charles Ives and a Stylistic Analysis of his Three Piano Sonatas

Harer, Carolyn Bertha 08 1900 (has links)
This thesis has been written with several goals in mind. The first purpose has been to inform the reader about the life of Charles Ives and the influences he experienced that gave him the impetus to experiment and write music of a nature thirty years ahead of its time, while the rest of the world was basking in the waning light of Romanticism. The second purpose has been to describe in a short space general characteristics that may be found throughout the entire musical output of Ives. The third purpose has been to analyze in greater detail the major portion of his contributions to piano literature, the three piano sonatas, so that the student may better understand the complexities which will face him in performance of these compositions. Perhaps the strongest motivation for the present study has been the hope that it might induce more students to be explorers themselves and become familiar with this music of Ives.

Kuhlau in the Piano Studio: A Discussion of Selected Sonatinas by Friedrich Kuhlau for Intermediate Level Piano Students

Ai, Xiaomeng 05 1900 (has links)
Friedrich Daniel Rudolf Kuhlau (1786–1832), was a German-Danish composer and pianist best known for his flute and opera works. His piano sonatinas have historically been overlooked for sonatinas of more popular composers such as Clementi, Mozart, and Beethoven. This research evaluates the technical and musical elements in Kuhlau's sonatinas and asserts that studying these works benefits intermediate level piano students, particularly in their musical and technical development. This document also provides performance practice and pedagogical discussion. Chapter 1 outlines the purpose of the dissertation and presents a brief biography of Kuhlau. Chapter 2 details the general expected achievements of the early intermediate, intermediate, and late intermediate piano levels. Chapter 3 focuses on specific Kuhlau sonatinas for each level, building on elements discussed from the previous chapter. Chapter 4 compares and contrasts the similarities and uniqueness between Kuhlau's sonatinas and those of Clementi (Op. 36, No. 3) and Beethoven (E-flat Major Sonatina). Chapter 5 discusses performance practices and related pedagogical concerns for students and teachers. Chapter 6 concludes the paper.

Amoedo Portela, Alejo 07 January 2020 (has links)
[EN] The piano in the work of Reveriano Soutullo (1880 - 1932) Abstract: Reveriano Soutullo is recognized as one of the important composers of the first third of the twentieth century in the lyrical genre. However, the repertoire where the piano is included went unnoticed; as a consequence, we set out to carry out this work with the aim of providing interpreters and scholars with a reference document of the repertoire in which the instrument is used, which is summarized in works for solo piano, chamber music for a piano sextet (composed of two violins, viola, cello, double bass and piano), for violin and piano and voice and piano. We include in the annexes the revision and edition in a score format of a representative selection of works, as well as the recording and edition in CD format, of a choice of them for solo piano. This repertoire is framed in what we can generically call «lounge music». As a result of the research work developed, we can get to know this composer better and provide new information about his life and work. Finally, the cataloged works were a total of 85, distributed in: 63 for solo piano, 5 for sextet with piano, 3 for violin and piano and 14 for voice and piano. Keywords: Reveriano Soutullo, piano, pianola, sextet with piano, lounge music. / Amoedo Portela, A. (2019).
