Evelyn Offscreen: An Application Of Interactive Performance Methodsin Alternate Reality Gaming

Borglund, Dawn 01 January 2010 (has links)
For my thesis project for the Masters of Fine Art in Film and Digital Media, I designed and produced Evelyn Offscreen, an alternate reality game (ARG) that was facilitated by interactive performance. The goal was to create an interactive experience that allowed several players to collaboratively create story across numerous media within the field of alternate reality gaming. The approach used in Evelyn Offscreen was intended to provide a degree of creative freedom to the players that has not been demonstrated in other ARG experiences and to use digital media to capture information about the relative effectiveness of the different techniques that were employed. During the month of October 2009, Evelyn Offscreen invited players to participate in an overarching story as characters. The game existed simultaneously through several media platforms such as Ning, twitter, and blogger as well as scenes located in Central Florida where players could embody their character in a real world setting. The results revealed insights into techniques for massive collaboration of story and player reactions to this hybrid form of alternate reality gaming and interactive performance.

Playable Cases as Authentic Practice in Online Classrooms

Haws, Kevin Scott 01 April 2019 (has links)
Playable cases are a new type of mixed-reality serious game (SG), combining elements of alternative reality games (ARGs) and education simulations to offer an immersive, transmedia story. Participants advance the plot through interactive gameplay and characters with the goal of creating products and experiencing real-world business situations. This study investigates the effectiveness of the playable case Microcore as a tool specifically for online writing instruction (OWI). Fifty students in online sections of a technical communication course participated in Microcore, in which they responded to pre- and post-survey questions and prompts directed at their perceptions about writing, understanding of workplace communication, and levels of engagement. Responses to the survey were collected, coded for thematic trends, and analyzed. Results from this survey study suggest that playable cases like Microcore may be effective at countering primary OWI difficulties, including disengagement, lack of social presence and humanity, faltering self-efficacy, and unclear, unproductive perceptions about writing assignments. Students responded positively to the playable case and appeared to develop more nuanced views about workplace communication and writing through this immersive narrative and interface.

Pogliesse, Marcelo Weick 25 August 2006 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2014-12-17T14:27:23Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 MarceloWP.pdf: 1503858 bytes, checksum: a3afbdaee8ef61f150da30b7877082d6 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2006-08-25 / The present work consists of studying to diffuse control of constitutionality in Brazil, with emphasis in a procedural alternative to the evolution of that model: the incident to challenge of unconstitutionality. Starting from the discussion about the new role of constitutional jurisdiction in peripheral countries and in the globalized society, without forgetting to face inevitable doubts about its legitimacy before other powers of the State, the Brazilian control of constitutionality is revealed, under a diffuse, non-dichotomical view, through a number of inconsistencies and misunderstandings, that compromise social peace, the credibility of democratic institutions and the supremacy of juridical security. In order to achieve the goal, the study in course discussed the main difficulties of the Brazilian mixed model of constitutionality control, as well as, directing its view to the incident of challenge of unconstitutionality, which the most adequate forms to assure its appropriateness, legitimacy, processing and decisory effects are. Is was essential, in this point of view, to establish the difference between the incident of challenge of unconstitutionality conceived in article of the Brazilian Federal Constitution and the incident of challenge of unconstitutionality such as it is known in the European models. The insertion of the incident of challenge of unconstitutionality based on European models in the Brazilian control system, without jeopardizing the North-American essence the Brazilian constitutional history presents since 1981, is the hypothesis that is presented as an improvement of constitutional protection / O presente trabalho consiste-se no estudo da fiscaliza??o difusa da constitucionalidade, com enfoque em uma alternativa procedimental para a evolu??o desse m?todo de aferi??o da compatibilidade das leis e dos atos normativos frente ?

Experimental Studies On A New Class Of Combinatorial LDPC Codes

Dang, Rajdeep Singh 05 1900 (has links)
We implement a package for the construction of a new class of Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes based on a new random high girth graph construction technique, and study the performance of the codes so constructed on both the Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channel as well as the Binary Erasure Channel (BEC). Our codes are “near regular”, meaning thereby that the the left degree of any node in the Tanner graph constructed varies by at most 1 from the average left degree and so also the right degree. The simulations for rate half codes indicate that the codes perform better than both the regular Progressive Edge Growth (PEG) codes which are constructed using a similar random technique, as well as the MacKay random codes. For high rates the ARG (Almost Regular high Girth) codes perform better than the PEG codes at low to medium SNR’s but the PEG codes seem to do better at high SNR’s. We have tried to track both near codewords as well as small weight codewords for these codes to examine the performance at high rates. For the binary erasure channel the performance of the ARG codes is better than that of the PEG codes. We have also proposed a modification of the sum-product decoding algorithm, where a quantity called the “node credibility” is used to appropriately process messages to check nodes. This technique substantially reduces the error rates at signal to noise ratios of 2.5dB and beyond for the codes experimented on. The average number of iterations to achieve this improved performance is practically the same as that for the traditional sum-product algorithm.

Coalescent, recombinaisons et mutations

Salamat, Majid 14 March 2011 (has links)
This thesis is concentrated on some sub jects on population genetics. In the first part we give formulae including the expectation and variance of the height and the length of the ancestral recombination graph (ARG) and the expectation and variance of the number of recombination events and we show that the expectation of the length of the ARG is a linear combination of the expectation of the length of Kingman's coalescent and the expectation of the height of the ARG. Also we show give a relation between the expectation of the ARG and the expectation of the number of recombination events. At the end of this part we show that the ARG comes down from infinity in the sense that we can dfine it with X_0 = ∞, while X_t <∞ ; for all t and we find the speed that the ARG comes down from infinity. In the second part wfind a generalization of the the Ewens sampling formula (GESF) in the presence of recombination for sample of sizes n = 2 and n = 3. In the third part of the thesis we study the ARG along the genome and we we find the distribution of the number of mutations when we have one recombination event in the genealogy of the sample.

Auslegung eines Anodenrezirkulationsgebläses auf Basis des Medienspaltmotors

Klunker, Christoph, Nachtigal, Philipp, Kentschke, Thorge, Gößling, Sönke, Seume, Jörg 27 May 2022 (has links)
