Watershed Scale Impacts of Floodplain Restoration on Nitrate Removal and the Practical Applications of Modeling Cumulative Floodplain Restoration HydraulicsOehler, Morgan Ashleigh 14 June 2024 (has links)
Human land use practices such as urbanization and agriculture contribute excess nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) and runoff volumes to rivers that degrade aquatic ecosystems and cause a loss of river functions such as nutrient processing and flood attenuation. Floodplain restoration increases floodplain exchange and is commonly implemented to improve water quality and reduce flood impacts at watershed scales. However, the effect of multiple restoration projects at the watershed scale is not well studied. We addressed this knowledge gap by two studies. The first study evaluated the impact of cumulative and spatially varying Stage-0 and bankfull floodplain restoration on nitrate removal in a generic 4th-order Virginia Piedmont watershed for small and sub-annual storm sizes (i.e. 2-year, 1-year, half-year, and monthly recurrence intervals). We used HEC-RAS hydraulics results from a prior study together with a nitrate removal model coded in R. Results indicated that watershed nitrate removal varied depending on the location of restoration in the watershed and where removal was evaluated. The greatest reductions in nitrate loads were observed in the same part of the river network where restoration occurred, with diminished impacts downstream. Removal also increased with increasing stream order/river size. However, removal was generally of small magnitude, with up to 1% or 19% of the watershed load removed for median or 90th-percentile removal rates, respectively. We estimated removal for our restoration scenarios under the Chesapeake Bay Program Protocols and found the removal rate to also be a critical factor in determining the efficiency of restoration project. Other controlling factors for nitrate removal were the amount of restoration and storm size. The second study entailed modeling cumulative restoration in a case study watershed to assess the impacts on nutrient removal and flood attenuation. We built a 1D HEC-RAS model of the 4th-order Gwynns Falls watershed near Baltimore MD using georeferenced HEC-RAS model geometries from the Maryland Department of the Environment and simulated unsteady stormflow hydraulics due to cumulative Stage-0 floodplain restoration for small and sub-annual storms. Restoration actually increased peak flow on the main channel (up to 0.9%) due to slowing of the flood wave on the main channel which was then better synchronized with tributary inflows. Restoration increased nitrate removal but at low levels (up to 0.12% or 2.6% removal for a median and 90th-percentile removal rate respectively) due to the small footprint of restoration in the watershed (up to 21.4% of the main channel was restored). These small and sometimes adverse outcomes occurred in response to what would be expensive restoration. Therefore, we argue for large-scale solutions to address watershed-scale water quality and flooding issues yet acknowledge re-evaluation of restoration goals against other societal priorities may be necessary. Overall, our results highlight the potential value and limitations of floodplain restoration in reducing flooding and nitrate exports at the channel network scale and provide practical insight for application of floodplain modeling at the watershed scale. / Master of Science / Human land use practices such as building cities and farms adds nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) and increase storm flows in rivers downstream. While nutrients and flows are needed for humans and wildlife, too much of either can harm aquatic organisms and endanger people and property. Floodplain restoration is a common river engineering technique that increases exchange between the river channel and low-lying areas next to rivers known as floodplains. Floodplains are natural features, but people have reduced river flows between channels and floodplains in many ways. For example, by allowing sediments to build up in floodplains or building levees that separate channels from adjacent floodplains. Increasing floodplain exchange by floodplain restoration is commonly implemented to improve water quality and reduce the impact of flooding in watersheds, which are large areas that drain to a single river. However, while the goals of restoration are often at watershed scales, the effect of multiple restoration projects at that watershed scale is not well studied. We addressed this knowledge gap by two studies. The first study evaluated the impact of multiple restoration projects and project locations in a generic (average/typical) watershed on nitrate removal. We used a nitrate removal model and the results from a prior study that modeled the stormflow behavior resulting from floodplain restoration. Results indicated that watershed nitrate removal varied depended on the location of restoration in the watershed and where removal was evaluated. The most nitrate was removed where restoration occurred, with less removal downstream in the watershed. Removal also increased with increasing river size. However, removal was generally small with up to 1% or 19% of the watershed load removed for a smaller and larger nitrate removal rate, respectively. Other factors that changed the amount of nitrate removed were the amount of restoration, nitrate removal rate in the floodplains, and storm size. The second study entailed modeling cumulative restoration in a case study watershed to assess the impacts on nitrate removal and reducing flooding. We modeled stormflow for multiple hypothetical restoration projects in the Gwynns Falls watershed and found that restoration can actually increase peak flow when placed in certain locations. Restoration increased removal but at low levels (up to 0.12% or 2.6% for a smaller and larger removal rate) due to the small amount of restoration simulated. These small and sometimes adverse outcomes occurred in response to what would be expensive restoration projects to construct. Therefore, we argue for large-scale solutions to address watershed-scale water quality and flooding issues yet acknowledge that re-evaluation of restoration goals against other societal priorities may be necessary. Overall, our results highlight the potential value and limitations of using floodplain restoration to reduce flooding and nutrient exports and provide practical insight for using our modeling techniques in managing watershed flows and pollution.

Evaluation of Impacts Resulting from Home Heating Oil Tank DischargesWeiner, Ellen Rebecca 25 July 2018 (has links)
Diesel #2 is used to heat nearly 400,000 dwellings in Virginia. Home heating oil released from leaking underground tanks located adjacent to homes and residing in unsaturated soil adjacent to houses poses a potentially serious health risk. Specifically, the migration of hazardous vapors into buildings, known as vapor intrusion, can negatively impact indoor air quality in homes and public buildings (USEPA 2015). In this look-back study, we assessed the potential for petroleum vapor intrusion by sampling soil vapor at 25 previously remediated spill sites. Residual contaminants, in particular total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) and naphthalene, were detected in approximately 1/3 of the samples. Concentration levels were correlated to site variables (building type, remediation time, physiographic region) including previous abatement measures. Spill category as assigned by the remediation contractor was investigated in conjunction with these three site variables. Remediation time was the most promising predictive site variable, with visible trends downward in DEQ Category 2 sites with increased remediation time. Higher contaminant concentrations were found near basement-style dwellings, which we hypothesize is due to the wall of the basement blocking horizontal migration of contaminants and the flow of oxygen to the release source zone. We found that many sites exceeded the sub-slab risk target threshold in naphthalene concentration, which has negative implications on previous abatement strategy efficacy. / Master of Science / Diesel is used to heat nearly 400,000 residences in Virginia. Active Fluid Borne Noise Reduction for Aviation Hydraulic PumpsWaitschat, Arne, Thielecke, Frank, Behr, Robert M., Heise, Ulrich 27 April 2016 (has links) (PDF)
The aviation environment holds challenging application constraints for efficient hydraulic system noise reduction devices. Besides strong limits on component weight and size, high safety and reliability standards demand simple solutions. Hence, basic silencers like inline expansion chambers and Helmholtz-Resonators are state-of-the-art aboard commercial aircrafts. Unfortunately, they do not meet today’s noise attenuation aims regarding passenger comfort and equipment durability. Significant attenuation performance is expected from active concepts that generate anti-phase noise. However, such concepts remain a long term approach unless related costs, e.g. due to additional power allocation and real-time control equipment can be avoided. In this paper an active fluid borne noise attenuation concept is discussed that accounts for the mentioned constraints. An aircraft hydraulic pump is considered as main noise source. The active attenuator is an in-house rotary valve design. The basic feature is a known direct shaft coupling principle of pump and rotary valve, so no speed/ frequency control of the valve and no separate power supply are required. The common-shaft principle is further simplified here and proposed as integral feature of future “smart pumps”.

It is essential for each organism to have the possibility to regulate its functions to allow its survival and improve its capacity to reproduce in different environments. With the information available, it is apparent that most organisms dedicate an important piece of their genetic material to regulating functions. We could think that certain regulating mechanisms have most likely persisted over time because they fulfilled their roles.
The first prokaryotes studies indicated that there are few regulating mechanisms that take control over genes, but it has been proven that a variety of these mechanisms are used in the regulation of genes and operons. In particular, the bacterial operons involved in the biosynthesis of amino acids, tRNA synthetase, the degradation of amino acids, the ribosomal proteins and RNA ribosomal could be controlled by transcription attenuation. This mechanism of regulation differs from others for the creation of two different structures of the mRNA where one of these structures represses the gene in 3’ and the other one allows the transcription/translation to continue.
In this work, I’m interested in the mechanism of transcription attenuation in prokaryotes where no molecule appears to act as a regulatory factor. In particular, I’m interested in the regulation of bacterial operons. The principal goal of this work is to present a new method for detecting riboswitches that combines the traditional research of these elements with the structural research by incorporating the study of mRNA folding.
This thesis is divided into four chapters. Chapter 1 is a review of the literature on RNA and an overview of the regulatory mechanism of gene expression in prokaryotes. Chapter 2 and 3 present the method developed for this work and its implementation in new software, TA-Search. Finally, Chapter 4 is dedicated to providing a discussion and conclusion for this work.

ASSOCIATION BETWEEN CONCOMITANT USE OF BISPHOSPHONATES AND SEROTONIN REUPTAKE INHIBITORS AND INCREASED RISK OF OSTEOPOROTIC-RELATED FRACTURES: AMONG COMMUNITY-DWELLING POSTMENOPAUSAL WOMENNyandege, Abner 01 January 2013 (has links)
Osteoporosis and depression are prevalent among older postmenopausal women 65 years or older. Bisphosphonates (BPs) and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) are commonly used medications to treat these conditions. Inhibitory effects of BPs on osteoclasts are responsible for the reduction in fracture risk. SSRIs, however, are associated with increased fracture risk through decreasing osteoblasts and increasing osteoclastic activity. These effects of SSRIs could attenuate the beneficial effects of BPs. This dissertation describes the concomitant use of BPs and SSRIs among postmeopausa women and reports findings from examining the association between concomitant use of BPs and SSRIs and fracture risk. Separate cross-sectional analyses were performed using data from the 2004-2008 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) and Medicare Part D prescriptions claims data (2008-2010) to examine usage patterns of BPs and SSRIs/SNRIs for women aged ≥45 years and ≥65 years, respectively. For our second objective, a nested-case control was conducted using Medicare claims data (2008-2010). Data from Medicare inpatient claims were linked to Medicare Part D data for all female BP users 65 years or older. We used Cox proportional hazards model to assess the increased risk of osteoporotic-related fractures among propensity score matched (1:1 ratio) cohorts of concomitant users of BPs and SSRIs and BP alone users. Concomitant use of BPs and SSRIs was prevalent and increased with age for each timeframe examined. Findings showed that approximately 12% (using MEPS) and 28% (using Medicare data) of women on BPs were also on SSRIs. For the second objective, 4,214 propensity score matched pairs (average age=80.4 years) of subjects were analyzed. Findings showed that concomitant use of BPs and SSRIs was associated with statistically significant increased risk for any fracture (HR=1.29, 95% CI, 1.07-1.57), but statistically non-significant increased risk for hip (HR=1.16, 95% CI, 0.92-1.47) and vertebral fractures (HR=1.55, 95% CI, 0.97-2.48). Current findings indicate that concomitant use of BPs and SSRIs is not uncommon among postmenopausal women and suggest potential attenuation of antifracture efficacy of BPs by SSRIs. Further studies are needed to understand the clinical impact of concomitant use of these medications among older postmenopausal women.

In a first part, the signals acquired with a 1-MHz axial transmission device are analyzed. A later contribution occuring after the first arriving signal is studied after the application of a wave separation procedure. This contribution is shown to be of interest for the ultrasonic characterization of cortical bone. Indeed, experiments performed in vitro on human radii show that this contribution is associated with a flexural wave guided which is dependent on the cortical thickness. In addition, this contribution has a lower frequency content than the first arriving signal and is associated with a different propagation mode. Therefore, a more thorough analysis of the ultrasonic signals enables a multi-modal/multi-frequency approach. In a second part, the ultrasonic attenuation is evaluated in an in vitro experimental study on bovine cortical bone samples. Ultrasonic attenuation is shown to be dependent on bone properties and micro-structure. Furthermore, this parameter seems to be more sensitive than the longitudinal wave velocity to bone parameters. Attenuation, in combination with ultrasonic wave velocity, is of interest and may provide a more comprehensive characterization of cortical bone

Parametry sítí FTTx - kvalita služeb / Parameters of FTTx networks - Quality of servicesWinkler, Aleš January 2012 (has links)
The main subject of this diploma thesis is to make a proposal to improve the optical access network for the transmission of Triple play services. I would here to the reader clarify method of proposal of optical network. There are described the kinds of optical access networks with parameters, for which we must look by their construction. There are described the modern methods of construction optical network too. In the theoretical part are discussed used architecture of networks too. I met here known standards, which I compared for big importance by their choice. A reason of construction of optical network are services known like Triple play. These services together with their problems and parameters are here discussed too. At the end of theoretical part I listed here measuring method for getting negative attribute distorting the led signal. In practical part the locality witch use the optical signal as the source of information is ordered. These network use unfit connections and has less possibilities than usual and this is the reason, why is the network not able to supply Triple play in requested quality. At first the analysis of ordered network was needed. Situation was complicated by the fact, that it has been prohibited entrance to me. The structure of network and network parts was known and documented by me. I made the proposals to improve this network in practical part. By the first proposal remained original kind of access network FTTB, but used new parts with higher performance. By the second proposal I made the network FTTH, by which it was possible to use the last haul optical cables with treatment and using new elements. It was needed to create solution by flat units. The resulting proposals are here evaluated, compared and cost evaluated. For rejection of access to optical network I did not make measuring, so I made simulation for variant FTTH for getting some parameters negative acting transmission.

Sepetiba bay, located about 60 km west of the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro city, has undergone notable development in the last decades, with the establishment of about 400 industrial plants in its basin, basically metallurgical, which release its industrial waste either straight into the bay or through local rivers. The Sepetiba harbor also brought up a lot of industrial investment in that area. This urban and industrial expansion caused several environmental impacts, mainly due to the presence of heavy metals and other potentially toxic substances present in the effluents discharged into the bay. This work aimed to assess heavy metal (Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb e Zn) contamination and mobility in sediments from Sepetiba bay. The acid-volatile sulfides (AVS) and the concentration of simultaneously extracted metals (S[SEM) were determined in 65 sediment samples from Sepetiba bay, representing the whole area. The results obtained showed that Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn presented higher concentrations in the northeastern area (mainly in the mouth of Guandu and Canal de São Francisco rivers), while the highest concentration of Ni were observed in the western region of the bay. The comparison between SEM concentrations with the Canadian Sediment Quality Guidelines (TEL and PEL) indicated that Cd and Zn presented values which may hazard to aquatic organisms (concentration levels above PEL); the elements Cu, Pb and Ni presented concentration levels below PEL, suggesting low probability of toxicological effects to the aquatic organisms. On the other hand, the ratio S[SEM]/[AVS] was below 1 in the northeastern region, indicating that, in spite of the high concentration of the analyzed metals in this area, they are trapped in the sediment, as sulfides. The total metal concentrations in the sediments were also determined and the same distribution pattern obtained for the SEM were observed, with high concentrations in the northeastern region of the bay, classifying the area as level 2, for Zn, and as level 1, for Cd, Cu, Pb and Ni, according to the CONAMA 344/04 act. A geostatiscal approach is presented, the attenuation of concentrations model, which aims to estimate metal mobility in sediments. The proposed model showed the highest attenuation values for Zn, Cd, Cu and Pb in the northeastern region, indicating that the mobility of these metals is low in this region, suggesting low availability, which is in good agreement with the results obtained by the S[SEM]/[AVS] model. These results indicate good possibilities of applying this model in metal contamination studies in estuarine ecosystems.

Avaliação de dispositivos de proteção individual utilizados em radiologia diagnóstica / Evaluation of personal protective devices used in diagnostic radiologySoares, Fernanda Cristina Salvador 09 October 2006 (has links)
In this work protective devices of five manufacturers were evaluated according to the NBR/IEC 61331-1 and NBR/IEC 61331-3 standards. Three different methodologies (linear interpolation, Archer model and sum of exponentials) were applied for the determination of the attenuation equivalent, since the standard does not indicate how it must be determined. Moreover, the uncertainties associated to each method, and the influence of the number of measurements in the combined uncertainty were estimated. The evaluated manufacture characteristics were: accompanying document, design, materials, dimensions and label marking. For this evaluation a check list about the requirements of the NBR/IEC 61331-3 standard was elaborated. The results showed a great difference between nominal and measured attenuation equivalent values. The comparison of the results using the three methodologies showed small variations among the obtained values and among the associated uncertainties in the different methodologies. It was possible to observe that the number of measurements does not contribute significantly for the increase of the uncertainty in all three methodologies. The best methodology for the laboratory routine is the linear interpolation methodology, with five measurements for each air kerma rate value. The discrepancy between the results obtained in this work and the requirements of the applied standards show the need to adopt a compulsory certification process for protective devices, thus contributing for the increase of the radiation protection of the users.

The sense of agencyGentsch, Antje 05 September 2012 (has links)
The experience of causing and controlling one s own actions and their consequences is a major aspect of our self-awareness, which has been termed sense of agency or experience of authorship. The underlying neural and cognitive mechanisms are still not well understood. In two consecutive experiments on action awareness, the electroencephalogram (EEG) of healthy participants was recorded to measure brain activity related to the perception of visual feedback. Reduced neuronal activity (sensory attenuation) in response to self- versus externally generated feedback was taken as an implicit measure for the sense of agency. The results showed that the amount of sensory attenuation was primarily determined by the mere presence of an action and external cues independent of highly precise predictions based on specific contingency rules. Explicit judgments of agency, in contrast, were mainly determined by high degrees of contingency between action and feedback, and external cues had an influence only in ambiguous contexts where contingency information was not reliable enough. A third EEG study investigated patients suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). OCD is characterized by lacking a sense of completion and agency for action outcomes. The results of this study revealed that OCD patients fail to suppress the consequences of their own action. Embodied signals were used less by patients for making specific predictions of the action feedback. In conclusion, the present work offers validation of sensory attenuation as an implicit measure of non-conceptual agency experience, and provides evidence that the sense of agency is based on an optimal integration of multiple embodied and external, contextual cues. Moreover, the present research reveals for the first time, to our knowledge - reduced gating of extracorporeal sensory action consequences in patients suffering from OCD, which may explain aberrant feelings of action completion and agency in these patients.
