Bicomponent Fiber in Sound Absorbent Production : Investigation of using bicomponent fiber as adhesive between woven and nonwoven textile and how it affects the sound absorptionLINDSTRÖM, KATARINA January 2014 (has links)
A new way of adhering woven textile to a nonwoven backing was explored, the end product in mind being a sound absorbent panel. Today a hot melt adhesive is sprayed on the nonwoven with woven decorating textile put on top before compression molding. This method results in an uneven layer of adhesive with the consequence of decorating textile detaching from the nonwoven and thereby a high number of discarded products. The report investigates the possibility of using a bicomponent fiber as the adhesive. This would guarantee an even layer of adhesive and make the manufacturing process one step shorter. A bicomponent fiber of core/sheath construction with a low melting polymer in the sheath was incorporated in the nonwoven upon fabrication. In the main bulk of the nonwoven a smaller ratio of bicomponent to normal polyester fiber was used, enough to stabilize the nonwoven. For the top layer of the nonwoven a higher ratio was chosen. As the nonwoven is then compression molded under heat together with the decorating textile, the low melting sheath of the bicomponent fiber will melt and create bonds within the nonwoven as well as to the textile. The ratio in the top layer was varied as well as the pressure in compression molding. The adhesion strength between nonwoven and decorating textile was tested, and the sound absorbing properties of the different manufactured samples were compared. The sound absorbing parameter of air flow resistance was tested and sound absorption was tested using impedance tube with transfer function method. Further, a way of testing transmission loss was developed by the manufacturing of a custom built impedance tube, which was then compared to the transfer function method. The results showed that a higher bicomponent percentage gave higher sound absorption in lower frequencies, but a lower sound absorption in higher frequencies. The thickness of the samples gave a positive effect on the sound absorption in all frequencies. The conclusion is to recommend a thicker material, and choose bicomponent according to which frequencies that should be absorbed and what adhesion strength is needed for end product. / Program: Textilteknik

The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the print performance of some of the new most promising, cost effective absorbent pigments specialised for inkjet coatings on the market in a continuous drive to find an alternative to silica. The target was a lower production cost for ArjoWiggins inkjet products, OMD 01 and OMD 02. Five absorbent pigments are being evaluated through measuring the qualities of the coating mix itself, visual evaluations of print performance and physical testing of the coated paper. Pigments 1,2 and 3, which all are said to be tailored for inkjet coatings, did not reach the print performance needed for an OMD 01 and OMD 02 equal, due to severe bleed and feathering identified especially on the Epson 950 printer. They are therefore currently not seen as viable formulations. A blend of 50% pigment 5 and 50% silica had excellent print performance as OMD 01 and OMD 02 equivalents and is therefore recommended as a potential alternative to 100% silica. It is of the company’s interest to find a more cost effective solution to their inkjet coatings, and a 50/50 blend of Pigment 5 will save the company more than 35 000 euro per year.

Mature fine tailings (MFT), as a mixture of residual bitumen, sand, silt, fine clay particles and water, are a byproduct of oil sands extraction. The large volume, and poor consolidation and water release ability of MFT have been causing significant economic and environmental concerns. Therefore, several studies have been implemented on finding innovative dewatering/disposal techniques. As a result, different methods have been introduced and tested at a laboratory or a field scale, yet very few of these are commercially used in the oil sands industries. Despite the extensive research, an optimal solution has not been found due to the lack of technical or economic feasibility.
In the present study, a novel approach that consists of the rapid dewatering of MFT by using a super absorbent polymer (SAP) to produce dense MFT is proposed. A comprehensive laboratory investigation on the geotechnical characteristics and behavior before and after treatment of MFT is conducted. The effects of SAP based dewatering and freeze/thaw cycles on the undrained shear strength of dewatered MFT by using a vane shear apparatus are studied. Furthermore, the ability of recycled SAP to dewater and densify MFT is assessed. Finally, this study provides the results of consolidation and hydraulic conductivity testing to evaluate the void ratio versus effective stress and hydraulic conductivity of MFT. The effects on the behavior and characteristics of MFT after amendment with usage of recycled SAP are also investigated.
The results indicate that SAP has the ability to significantly dewater, densify and increase the undrained shear strength of MFT. Furthermore, when subjected to freeze/thaw cycles, the MFT dewatered with SAP shows an additional increase in strength and solid content. It is also found to be possible to regenerate the polymer (still within sachets) through light thermal drying, and the regenerated SAP can still significantly dewater and thus increase the shear strength and solid content of the MFT. In addition, the obtained high solid content affects and improves the compressibility of the material, thus resulting in low initial void ratios. On the other hand, low hydraulic permeability that is derived from low initial void ratios and consolidation is improved by the freeze/thaw process due to the interconnected voids created during the freezing process.

Les trois principaux phénomènes acoustiques propres au milieu forestier nécessitant d'être pris en compte sont (1) l'absorption due à la présence d'un sol multi-couche, (2) la diffusion multiple due à la présence d'obstacles tels que les troncs, (3) les effets micro-météorologiques rattachés aux variations des gradients de vitesse de vent et de température. Parmi les méthodes numériques de référence, la méthode des lignes de transmission (TLM), semble particulièrement adaptée pour la modélisation de la propagation acoustique en présence de forêt, à condition de procéder à de nouveaux développements. La première nécessité pour l'adaptation de la méthode TLM aux simulations acoustiques sur de grandes distances est la définition de couches absorbantes, permettant de tronquer efficacement le domaine d'étude, sans introduire de réflexions parasites. La formulation ainsi développée dans le cadre de la thèse est rigoureusement équivalente à l'équation de propagation des ondes amorties, et se traduit dans la méthode TLM par l'introduction et l'optimisation d'un terme de dissipation. L'étape suivante a consisté à vérifier la capacité de la méthode TLM à modéliser les phénomènes de diffusion par des cylindres. L’une des originalités introduites dans cette thèse réside dans le placement des éléments diffuseurs, à partir de lois de distribution aléatoire et de Gibbs, permettant ainsi de définir des répartitions proches de celles rencontrées en forêt. À titre d'application de la méthode développée dans le cadre de la thèse, une étude paramétrique a été réalisée afin de définir les conditions pour lesquelles une forêt peut également être considérée comme un dispositif de protection. / The prediction of sound propagation in presence of forest remains a major challenge for the outdoor sound propagation community. Reference numerical models such as the Transmission Line Matrix (TLM) method can be developed in order to accurately predict each acoustical phenomenon that takes place inside forest. The first need for the TLM method is an efficient theory-based absorbing layer formulation that enables the truncation of the numerical domain. The two proposed absorbing layer formulations are based on the approximation of the perfectly matched layer theory. The most efficient proposed formulation is shown to be equivalent to wave propagation in a lossy media, which, in the TLM method formulation, is introduced using an additional dissipation term. Then, the ability of the TLM method for the simulation of scattering is studied comparing the numerical results to both analytical solutions and measurements on scale models. Lastly, the attenuation of acoustic levels by a simplified forest is numerically studied using several arrangements of cylinders placed normal to either reflecting or absorbing ground. It is observed that randomly spaced arrangements are more inclined to attenuate acoustic waves than periodic arrangements. Moreover, the sensitivity to the density, the length of the array and the ground absorption is tested. The main trend shows that the density and the distribution are two important parameters for the attenuation. In future work, it can be interesting to look at the sensitivity of each parameter. This study could then be used to relate the morphology (i.e. distribution, density, length) of a forest to the acoustical properties of the forest.

Este trabalho relata o uso de polpa etanol /água de medula em um estudo que visa obter e caracterizar carboximetilcelulose substancialmente insolúvel, destinada a aplicação como material absorvente. Em um experimento típico a reação de carboximetilação de polpa etanol / água branqueada de medula de bagaço foi realizada em suspensão de isopropanol /água de 1: 8 (mim) a 80°C por 4 horas empregando relação molar de celulose / hidróxido de sódio / ácido monocloroacético de 1 /5.4 / 8.8. Os produtos foram caracterizados quanto à presença de grupos funcionais característicos; grau médio de substituição (DS); solubilidade em água e em solução aquosa alcalina; capacidade de retenção de água e de solução salina; morfologia e estabilidade térmica. As técnicas instrumentais empregadas nessas caracterizações incluem as espectroscopias de ressonância magnética nuclear (RMN) e de infravermelho (i.r); microscopia eletrônica de varredura (MEV); termogravimetria (ATG) e calorimetria diferencial de varredura (DSC). O material com melhores características foi obtido quando a condição acima descrita para a reação de carboximetilação foi aplicada e corresponde a um produto muito pouco solúvel (SH20 < 2%) com características absorventes superiores às da matéria-prima. Foram realizadas outras oito sínteses empregando diferentes concentrações de ácido monocloroacético e outros tempos de reação. Todos os produtos apresentam o efeito polieletrólito, mas suas capacidades de inchamento não dependem de forma simples dos graus médios de substituição. As capacidades de\' retenção de água apresentadas pelos produtos deste trabalho parecem resultar de um compromisso entre variáveis da reação, quantidade e distribuição de grupos iônicos ao longo das cadeias e grau de intercruzamento. Nossos resultados não permitem concluir se os materiais correspondem a cadeias poliméricas intercruzadas física ou covalentemente, pois a ocorrência de ligações de intercruzamento do tipo éster não pode ser descartada, mas a confirmação de sua presença por espectroscopia de infra-vermelho é prejudicada pela extensa superposição de bandas na região de interesse. Apesar do emprego de fontes convencionais de celulose em condições semelhantes de síntese resultar em produtos com características muitos superiores àquelas apresentadas pelos produtos deste trabalho, consideramos que nossos resultados são promissores. Por um lado, devem ser consideradas a disponibilidade e abundância da matéria-prima que podem significar um custo relativamente baixo quando comparado ao de fontes convencionais de celulose. Por outro lado, o emprego de polpas de bagaço em lugar de madeiras pode ter um impacto ecológico muito positivo dada a possibilidade de preservação de reservas florestais. Finalmente é necessário ressaltar que a qualidade dos produtos obtidos depende das características da matéria-prima empregada, principalmente grau de polimerização da celulose obtida por polpação. Nesse sentido, o emprego de outros processos de polpação e branqueamento que reduzam a degradação das cadeias de celulose melhorarão as características das polpas de medula e, por consequência, as propriedades absorventes da carboximetilcelulose insolúvel obtida. / This work describes the use of ethanol / water pulps of pith in a study aiming the obtention and characterization of substantially insoluble carboxymethylcellulose for application as an absorvente material. In a typical experiment the carboxymethylation reaction of bleached ethanol / water pulp occurred at 80°C for 4 hours in isopropanol/ water suspension 1 : 8 (w/w) employing a cellulose / sodium hydroxide / monochloroacetic acid molar ratio of 1.0/5.4 / 8.8. Characterizations were made through the determinations of the presence of characteristic functional groups; degree of substitution (DS); solubility in pure water and alkaline aqueous solution; water and saline aqueous solution retention capacity; morphology and thermal stability of the obtained products. Infra-red (i.r.) and nuclear magnetic ressonance (NMR) spectroscopies; scanning electronic microscopy (SEM); thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were employed for these characterizations. The material with the best absorbent characteristics was obtained through the application of the condition above described for the carboxymethylation reaction. This is a very insoluble product (S IDO < 20/0) with a much higher water retention capacity than unreacted pulp employed as raw material. Other eight products were prepared through the application of different concentrations of monochloroacetic acid and variable reactions times. AlI products manifested the polyelectrolyte effect, but their water retention capacities seem to depend on the degree of substitutions in a complex way. Water retention capacities of the products of this work seem to be the result of a compromise among the parameters of the carboxymethylation reaction, the content and distribution of ionic groups and the degree of crosslinking. From our results it cannot be concluded if the materials correspond to physically or covalently crosslinked polyffiericchains since the occurrence of ester bonds as crosslinkers can not be discarded, but its detection in the infra-red spectra is difficult as a consequence of the extensive superposition of bands in the region of interest. Although the use of conventional sources of cellulose in conditions similar to those described here result in products of superior quality we believe that pith can be a good altemative raw material for the obtention of carboxyffiethyl ceIlulose with absorbent characteristics. In Brazil it is available as a very abundant and low cost raw material derived from the industries which process sugar cane for the production of ethanol and sugar and its utilization in place of wood pulps may also represent ecological advantages as forest preservation will be favoured. Finally it is worthwhile to remember that the quality of the products also depends on the raw material characteristics, mainly the degree of polyffierization of the cellulose obtained after pulping. So the use of the other pulping and bleaching processes which minimize chain degradation wiIl certainly result in better pulps from pith and as a consequence materials with better absorbent characteristics will be prepared.

Fluffmassa är ett förnybart material bestående av cellulosafiber som utvinns under massakokning. Dessa fiber används för att tillverka olika absorberande produkter som till exempel servetter. Fluffmassa används även för att tillverka absorptionskärnor i damhygienprodukter, inkontinensprodukter och blöjor. Vissa av dessa absorptionskärnor (speciellt i ultratunna bindor) tillverkas med airlaid. Airlaid är en tillverkingsteknik som ger fiberstrukturer med slumpmässig orientering genom att applicera ett undertryck. Syftet med detta examensarbete var att utveckla metoder för att tillverka servetter och absorptionskärnor till damhygienprodukter i laboratoriemiljö genom att använda en airlaid maskin i laboratorieskala. Detta utfördes genom att analysera viktiga egenskaper som exempelvis ytvikt, tjocklek, densitet, böjlängd och förmågan att absorbera vätska i kommersiella servetter och absorptionskärnor inom damhygien. Även dragprov och SEM-analys utfördes. Resultatet från dessa analyser användes som ett riktvärde under metodutvecklingen. Två metoder utvecklades - en för att tillverka en servettstruktur och en för att tillverka en absorptionskärna för damhygien. De olika tillverkningsstegen inkluderar defibrering, formering, pressning, prägling, latexsprayning samt härdning. Båda strukturerna tillverkades, och dess egenskaper analyserades och jämfördes med de kommersiella produkterna. Analyserna visade att de utvecklade metoderna genererade struktuer vars ytvikt stämde väl överrens med de kommersialla produkterna. Strukturerna var dock tjockare och hade en lägre densitet än de kommmersiella produkterna. Den minskade densiteten påverkade förmodligen resultatet från de andra analyserna som utfördes i detta projekt. Servettstrukturen hade en lägre böjlängd än de kommersiella servetterna och damhygienstrukturen hade bättre absorption än de kommersiella produkterna. Båda strukturerna hade en ytfinish som överensstämmde väl med de kommersiella produkterna. Dock visade SEM-analysen att latex saknades i mitten av de båda tillverkade strukturerna. / Fluff pulp is a renewable material consisting of pure cellulose fibers which are obtained during pulping. These fibers are commonly used to form Airlaid-nonwoven products such as napkins and wipes. Fluff pulp is also used in absorbent cores in femcare products, incontinence products and diapers. Some of these absorbent core structures (especially in ultrathin pads) are produced through airlaid. Airlaid is a manufacturing technique which forms a randomly oriented fiber structure by using an applied suction. This degree project aimed at developing methods for producing napkins and femcare absorbent cores on a laboratory scale by using an airlaid former. Important properties such as grammage, thickness, density, bending length and absorption capacity were therefore measured on commercial napkins and femcare absorbent cores. Other analyses which were performed include tensile testing and SEM. Findings from these analyses were then used as a target reference during the method development. Two methods were developed; one for producing a napkin structure and one for producing a femcare absorbent core structure. The different manufacturing steps included fiber defiberization, sample formation, pressing, embossing, latex spraying and curing. Napkin structures and femcare absorbent core structures were produced by using the developed methods, and their properties were analyzed and compared with the commercial products. Analysis showed that the developed methods generated structures with grammages that corresponded well with the grammages in the commercial products. However, both developed structures were thicker and had lower density than the commercial products. This decreased density probably influenced the results in other analyses performed in this project. The developed napkin structure had a shorter bending length compared to the commercial napkins and the developed femcare structure had a better absorption capacity compared to the commercial femcare absorbent cores. Both developed structures obtained nice surface finish which corresponded well with the surface finish in the commercial products. However, SEM analysis indicated that no latex managed to reach the center in the developed structures.

Exploring Novel, Hard, Acoustically Absorbent, MaterialsRehfuss, Randall Jay 24 April 2018 (has links)
At the turn of the 20th century two contemporaries in their respective fields teamed up to develop a solution to an acoustic problem with the hard-surfaced vaulted ceilings being installed in many large spanning rooms being built at the time. In the spirit of their ingenuity, this research explores a 21st century solution to a similar problem in contemporary buildings; the desire for a durable, hard surface wall or ceiling material treatment that is more sound absorbent than other common surface treatments. To find a material answer to this desire an impedance tube was used to analyze the mid-frequency octave band absorption coefficients of various re-purposed existing materials and tiles created utilizing 3D print technology and Helmholtz resonators. Additionally, an empirical study of Helmholtz resonator geometry was performed by analyzing the sound absorption of resonant cavity shape changes. Finally, plots of the absorption coefficients for each material tested were created to provide a visual comparison against two common surface treatment materials, tectum and gypsum wall board. / Master of Architecture

L’hexafluorure d’uranium (UF6), est le seul composé utilisé à l’état gazeux dans les procédés d’enrichissement pour la production du combustible nucléaire. Pour le bon déroulement de l’étape d’enrichissement, la qualité de UF6 est primordiale. Cette étude s’est intéressée principalement aux impuretés volatiles sous forme de fluorures et oxyfluorures et leur réactivité avec des matériaux en présence ou non de l’UF6. La nature des produits adsorbés et de réactions a été identifiée. Les mécanismes physico-chimiques mis en jeux lors de la sorption ont été investigués. Les performances (capacité de sorption, sélectivité et régénération) de ces matériaux absorbants et adsorbants ont été évaluées en vue de leur utilisation comme filtre UF6 dans les usines de conversion. / Uranium hexafluoride (UF6), is the only compound used in the gaseous state in the process of enrichment to produce nuclear fuel. For the success of the enrichment step, the UF6 quality is paramount. This study is mainly concerned with volatile impurities in form of fluorides and oxyfluorides and their reactivity with the materials in presence or not of UF6. The nature of the adsorbed compounds and reactions products was identified. The physico-chemical mechanisms of sorption were investigated. The performances (sorption capacity, selectivity and regeneration) of the absorbent and adsorbent materials have been evaluated to be used as UF6 filters in conversion plants.

Poliuretanas são materiais tradicionalmente obtidos por métodos não ambientalmente amigáveis e existe uma tendência para que novas rotas venham a ser utilizadas para que exista uma redução significativa dos danos causados à natureza e seres vivos. Esses novos materiais são chamados polihidroxiuretanas e podem ser obtidas através da abertura dos anéis de carbonatos cíclicos quando reagidos com aminas primárias ou secundárias. O ciclocarbonato foi obtido a partir da reação de PDMS e utilizou-se CO2 como matéria prima, o que o torna ainda mais ambientalmente amigável. Neste caso foi utilizado como finalizador de cadeia, 4-(2-aminoethyl)benzene-1,2-diol, conhecido comercialmente como Dopamina. Esta amina foi escolhida por conter em suas extremidades, grupos catecóis que apresentam boa adesão em diferentes substratos em diferentes condições. Os resultados mostraram que o material apresentava uma boa adesão em ligas de titânio e também apresentavam alto grau de hidrofobicidade. O material desenvolvido também foi aplicado em nanotubos de titanato, afim de hidrofobizar o material e melhorar a capacidade de adsorção de compostos orgânicos, como corantes e hidrocarbonetos aromáticos policíclicos. Através de resultados de espectroscopia UV-Vis e Fluorescência Molecular, foi possível constatar a eficácia do nanocompósito para adsorver hidrocarbonetos aromáticos policíclicos e também adsorver e fotodegradar corantes. O material também quando aplicado como revestimento em ligas utilizadas em implantes médicos e odontológicos, apresentou efeito antimicrobiano para a maioria dos micro-organismos testados e quando tratados com prata, apresenta resultados bastante satisfatórios tanto em testes colorimétricos com XTT quanto para halos de inibição de micro-organismos. Desta forma a polihidroxiuretana aqui proposta se mostrou versátil e eficaz para todas as aplicações às quais foram submetidas. / Polyurethanes are materials traditionally obtained by non-environmentally friendly methods and there is a tendency for new routes to be used to significantly reduce the damage to nature and living things. These new materials are called polyhydroxyurethanes and can be obtained by opening the cyclic carbonate rings when reacted with primary or secondary amines. The carbonate cycle was obtained from the PDMS reaction and CO2 was used as feedstock, which makes it even more environmentally friendly. In this case, 4- (2-aminoethyl) benzene-1,2-diol, known commercially as dopamine, was used as the chain terminator. This amine was chosen because it contains at its ends catechol groups that have good adhesion on different substrates under different conditions. The results showed that the material had a good adhesion in titanium alloys and also showed a high degree of hydrophobicity. The material developed was also applied to titanate nanotubes in order to hydrophobize the material and to improve the adsorption capacity of organic compounds, such as dyes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Through the results of UV-Vis spectroscopy and Molecular Fluorescence, it was possible to verify the effectiveness of the nanocomposite to adsorb polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and also to adsorb and photodegradate dyes. The material also when applied as a coating in alloys used in medical and dental implants, presented antimicrobial effect for most of the microorganisms tested and when treated with silver, presents quite satisfactory results in both colorimetric tests with XTT and for micro-organisms inhibition halos. In this way the polyhydroxyurethane proposed here proved versatile and effective for all the applications to which they were submitted.
