VETT. : Alternative methods of extending the life of textilesIpsen, Ebba January 2022 (has links)
In my master’s degree project in Design at Konstfack, completed and presented during the spring semester of 2022, I combine three of my competencies: Applied knowledge in industrial design, textile and pattern construction and textile materials science. The project was carried out in contact with many different actors, in the industrial design field as well as the textile field. 92% of the garments we wash, we wash unnecessarily. Many garments are washed after just one use. Washing less reduces the wear and tear of the fabric. If we extend the life of the garment by one year, we can reduce our carbon footprint by 25%. Sweat is one of the main reasons why we wash, although the whole fabric does not need to be cleaned. Based on the collected user data, the armpit was identified as one of the primary problem areas. I am developing an absorbent patch for the armpit. This product consists of circular textile materials, in symbiosis with function and shape. The product’s imprint is traceable, as well as transparent in manufacturing. With this absorbing patch, I want to contribute to a sustainable change in the fast-fashion industry by affecting design thinking, demand and consumerism. This project focuses on how we can practice washing less, by identifying behavior patterns, material research in textiles and circular design in product development. Last but not least it is a close study of a product category and how it can be developed. Hence the title: VETT. - “common sense”.

Framtagning av en A-klassificerad diskret utformad ljudväggabsorbentRagnarsson, Philip January 2022 (has links)
The following project has been carried out in collaboration with Abstracta AB (AAB), a company based in Lammhult with specialization in sound landscapes for indoor environments. The company manufactures different types of products with sound-absorbing properties where sustainability and design are in great focus. A new product idea of the company is based on developing an A-classified discreetly designed wall absorber that is considered more as a "wall" than a "wall with mounted absorbent on". The purpose of the project was to develop the following product on a conceptual level. A main research question with two underlying issues was developed that served as a support during the project. Question 1: How can an A-rated discreetly designed sound wall absorber be developed? 1.a: How can an A-rated sound wall absorber be developed? 1.b: How can a sound wall absorber achieve a discreetness in its design? The project followed a product development process where the mainly focus was on concept development and concept testing. The concept was developed based on data collected from a literature study and with the use of a sound absorption calculator. A sound absorption test and an examination form regarding the discrete modeling and design of the absorbent were performed for the final concept that the project resulted in. The project showed that an A-rated discreetly designed sound wall absorber can be developed through a process where design-critical specifications that affect the absorber's discrete design control how the object can be modeled. Via a sound absorption calculator, concepts can be designed that theoretically indicate an A-rate while the design-critical specifications are not exceeded. Based on the concept, a prototype is manufactured that can undergo a sound absorption test to determine the absorbent's actual sound absorption capacity. Finally, an examination is made to analyze whether the absorbent is considered a discrete alternative or not. Based on the project's results, the work process proved to be advantageous as the concept indicated a sound absorption capacity that exceeded the requirements of the A-rating and at the same time obtained a discreet design and modeling. This was achieved in connection with the manufacturing materials achieving their technical specifications and a square meter cost lower than expected. This was achieved in connection with the manufacturing materials achieving their technical specifications and a square meter cost lower than expected. In the further development of the final concept, a solution for how the absorbent is to be mounted on the wall must be developed as this was not focused on in the project based on its boundaries. To achieve a valid A-rate, an additional sound absorption test must also be performed where a larger object area of 10–12 m2 is tested. In future work, the concept's discrete modeling and design should also be examined based on physical treatment to review how the examination form's response results relate to this.

Effektivisering av produktionen av en ljudabsorbent i kartong / Streamlining the production of a cardboard sound absorberPanikian Aljunidi, Elias, Skoglund, Joakim January 2022 (has links)
Sontech International AB is a company that specializes in sound absorbents made of metal and foam. They have a new product that is a sound absorbent made of cardboard with cuts along the sheet of cardboard with a maximum distance between the cuts of 5 mm. This product is made with a CNC-machine and it takes 17 minutes per square meter to produce a sheet with 5 mm between each cut. To make the product viable the production time needs to come down to a minute per square meter. Sontech is are latively small company which is why they have not been able to spare the resources to develop a solution for manufacturing this product. The writers have based their thesis paper in mechanical engineering on developing and presenting a complete model of a machine as a method of production. After many sketches, prototypes and a selection between three different solutions they picked a machine that they refer to as ‘‘The rake’’. ‘’The rake’’ is powered by two pneumatic cylinders. One cylinder lifts the sheet of cardboard and either pushes or pulls ‘’the rake’’ part of the machine that is made of 199 blades. The production time is estimated to be about twenty seconds per square meter of cardboard.

Skin Health Monitoring Sensor on Textiles : Incorporation of pH Responsive Dyes on Polyethylene and Polypropylene NonwovensBiswas, Tuser January 2016 (has links)
Incontinence diapers or disposable absorbent pads provide essential help to people having such a physical difficulty. However, during prolonged used of these products in daily life, the skin inside pad area may get fragile and damaged which are difficult to recover in old ages. Therefore a skin friendly sensor can be added to the inner layer of pad that would monitor the skin condition and signal any abnormalities to the wearer. Smart materials which can change color upon variation of skin pH were incorporated with synthetic nonwoven layers of the pad. Among various incorporation methods of these materials, ‘sol-gel’ coating technique was found to be successfulfor applications on optical sensor and on fewother fabric types. Thus ‘sol-gel’ method with modified recipe for different dye and chemical combinations were experimented in this project.Several developed samples showed color change (e.g. yellow to red) that can be easily detected by wearers’ eyes.Additionally, the methods and materials involved showed no adverse effect on health and environment. Thus this study succeeds to provide with a mean for skin health monitor based on nonwoven textiles by incorporation of color changing materials.

14 % brukte bleier for sikkerhets skyld. / The overall aim of this thesis was to get an overview over different dysfunction in the lower urinary tract in the elderly. Also, we wanted to describe the perceptions and barriers that influence the nursing staff`’s ability to provide appropriate incontinence care in nursing home residents. The thesis includes one quantitative study (paper I, II, III), and one qualitative study (paper IV). Paper I was a cross-sectional study. Paper II and III were a prospective surveillance with a follow-up period of 1 year. 183 residents from six Norwegian nursing homes participated. In paper I, the prevalence of urinary incontinence in Norwegian nursing home residents was evaluated. The factors possibly associated with urinary incontinence were also studied. In paper II, we investigated whether residual urine was a risk factor for developing urinary tract infections in the elderly in nursing homes. In paper III, the objective was to determine whether pads per day usage is a reliable measure of urinary incontinence in nursing home residents. Furthermore, we wanted to study the association between urinary tract infections, pads per day usage and fluid intake. In the qualitative study, the aim was to identify perceptions and barriers that influence the ability of nursing staff to provide appropriate incontinence care. Five charge nurses, five registered nurses and five certified nursing assistants participated in the focus group interviews. The analysis in paper I, showed that 122 (69 %) of the resident were incontinent for urine and 144 used absorbent pads (83 %). 14 % of residents used absorbent pads ‘just to make sure’. They did not have a history of urinary incontinence. Low ADL score, dementia and urinary tract infection were significantly associated with incontinence for urine (P = <0.01). In paper II, 93 of the residents (65.3 %) had postvoid residual urine (PVR) < 100 mL and 52 residents (34.7 %) had a PVR 100 mL. During the follow-up period, 51 residents (34.0 %) had one or more urinary tract infections (UTI). The prevalence of UTI among females was higher than among men (40.4 % versus. 19.6 %; P = 0.015). There was no significant difference in mean PVR among residents that did or did not develop UTI (79 mL versus 97mL; P = 0.26). A PVR 100 mL was not associated with an increased risk of developing UTI`s (P = 0.59).In paper III, 118 (77 %) used absorbent pads. Residents that used absorbent pads were at increased risk of developing UTIs compared to residents that did notviiiuse pads (41 % versus 11 %; P = 0.001). Daily fluid intake was not associated with UTIs (P = 0.46). The number of pad shifts had no relation with the risk of developing UTIs (P = 0.62). Residents with a given pad per day (PPD) presented a wide range of incontinence volumes. In paper IV, three topics and eight categories were identified. The first topic, Perceptions and barriers associated with residents, consisted of one category: ‘physical and cognitive problems’. The second topic, Perceptions and barriers associated with nursing staff, consisted of three categories: ‘lack of knowledge’, ‘attitudes and beliefs’ and ‘lack of accessibility’. The third topic, Perceptions and barriers associated with organizational culture, consisted of four categories: ‘rigid routines’, ‘lack of resource’, ‘lack of documentation’ and ‘lack of leadership’.The results of the thesis show that the prevalence of urinary incontinence in nursing homes is high. Absorbent products are frequently used without a history of urinary incontinence. Physical impairment, dementia and urinary tract infections are associated with urinary incontinence. is common in nursing home residents. No association between PVR and UTI was found. The use of absorbent pads is associated with an increased risk of developing UTIs. PPD and daily fluid intake are not correlated with the risk of developing UTIs. PPD is an unreliable measure of urinary incontinence in nursing home residents. The findings from the qualitative study shows that there are many barriers that might influence the possibilities of nursing staff to provide appropriate incontinence care to residents in nursing homes. However, it can nevertheless seem like opinions and the attitude of nursing staff, together with a lack of knowledge about urinary incontince, are the most important barriers to provide appropriate incontinence care.

Methodologies to assess the fate of polar organic compounds in aquatic environmentsMagnér, Jörgen January 2010 (has links)
Polar organic compounds (POCs) are chemicals with polar functional groups in their structure. The functional groups make the compounds hydrophilic and less prone to partition with biota. However, the knowledge of their fate is limited due to difficulties associated with their measurements. Although, the persistence of POCs in the environment is generally low, they are considered to be semi-persistent compounds due to their continuous introduction to the environment via wastewater. Studies have shown that complex mixtures of POCs of different classes may have synergistic toxic effects on biota at environmental concentration levels. Therefore, it is important to develop analytical methods in order to establish the occurrence and fate of POCs in aquatic environments. In Study I, a positive correlation between the sorption of a novel poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate-co-carbon monoxide) (PEVAC) material and the theoretical logarithmic dissociation partition coefficient (Log D) for seven POCs was observed. The PEVAC material showed an enhanced sorption of the POCs compared to the silicone material. Study II, demonstrated that the PEVAC sampler assess the freely dissolved concentration of POCs in aquatic environments. The results showed that the PEVAC polymer is an attractive alternative to silicone for mimicing the biological uptake of POCs in aquatic environments. Additionally, Study II showed that total extraction is appropriate for determination of the freely dissolved concentration of uncharged POCs with Log KOW < 2.67 in natural water. In study III, a novel bag-solid phase extraction (bag-SPE) technique was compared to a conventional SPE-technique. Despite that the extraction efficiencies for POCs in wastewater were lower using the bag-SPE method, the two methods showed similar detection limits due to the lower ion-suppression experienced with the bag-SPE. In study IV the bag-SPE method was further developed with the aim of lowering the detection limits for POCs. Detection limits (LOD) below 13 ng/L showed that the bag-SPE method was suitable for determination of POCs in surface sea water. / This research was financially supported by European Union (European Commission, FP6 Contract No. 003956) “Novel Methods for Integrated Risk Assessment of Cumulative Stressors in the Environment” (NoMiracle) and by the Swedish research council Formas.

This dissertation presents a process for the absorptive CO2-separation from gas streams, which shows a lower energy requirement than established methods by using the newly developed absorption liquid GenosorbN in a postcombustion-process.
To retrofit an already existing power plant, the postcombustion-process is advantageous, because it needs the least changes in the power plant-process itself compared to the IGCC- or the Oxyfuel-process. The absorbents discussed for the CO2-separation up to now, for example MEA (mono-ethanol-amine), cause a high energy requirement mainly in the solvent regeneration, which has to be provided additionally from the power plant. The solvent GenosorbN (chemical notation: poly(methyldiglycol)amine) was developed in cooperation between the Institute of Process Engineering and Environmental Engineering of the Technical University of Dresden and the Clariant GmbH.
GenosorbN is a hybrid-absorbent and therefore it shows both physical and chemical bonding forces. Based on the solvents characteristic of solubility for CO2 and important data on chemical media (for example heat capacity and enthalpy of solution) operating parameters for an energetic advantageous technical application were identified by a lot of test series at a pilot plant.
The measurements show that the absorption process with the undiluted GenosorbN has a circa 20 - 27 % lower energy demand for the solvent regeneration compared to the MEA-process to reach a degree of separation of 90 %. Furthermore a low-value heating steam with lower temperature and therefore lower pressure level suffices because of the significant lower (40 - 50 K) regeneration temperature. An additional pressure reduction to 400 mbar absolute pressure in the regeneration column favours the solvent regeneration considerably.

Modélisation du rayonnement acoustique dans les guides traités par des matériaux absorbants à réaction localisée ou non localisée en présence d'écoulement par la méthode des éléments finis / Modeling by the finite element method of acoustic radiation in waveguides lined with locally or non locally reacting absorbent materials in the presence of flowOuedraogo, Boureima 28 September 2011 (has links)
Our concern in this work is the problem of acoustic propagation in guides lined with locally or non locally reacting materials with the presence of mean fluid flow. In several industrial systems such as aircraft jet engines, mufflers exhaust and ventilation systems, noise is mostly channeled outside by guides of more or less complex geometries. A study of waveguides makes it possible to predict and understand the physical phenomena such as refraction, convection, absorption and wave attenuation. In waveguides studies, guides are often considered infinitely long to get rid of some phenomena (reflection for example) at their ends. Solving the problem of acoustic propagation in infinite guides by finite element method requires to truncate the infinite domain by artificial boundaries on which transparent boundary conditions must be written. In this work, the transparent boundary conditions are written as a Dirichlet-to-Neumann (DtN) operators based on sound pressure decomposition on the eigenmodes basis of the studied guide by taking into account the influence of parameters such as flow and acoustic liners in the guide walls. Acoustic propagation in the guide is governed by a model based on the scalar Helmholtz equation and the used liners are locally reacting materials of local impedance Z and porous materials. In this study, we focused particularly rigid porous materials modelized by an equivalent fluid because the acoustic propagation in these materials is also governed by the Helmholtz equation as in a fluid medium. Results of studies of acoustic propagation in uniform straight lined guides with a uniform flow allowed to validate the method developed to truncate infinite domains. The study was also done successfully for non uniform lined guides with a potential mean flow.
