Reading and Repetition: Individual Difference in Adult Reading Skill

<p>Within the last decade, the study of individual differences in reading skill has become an active area of investigation. Much of this research has been conducted with children, and has focused on selected processes hypothesized to underlie proficient reading skill. Relatively less attention has been directed toward evaluating the effects of experience in contributing to skill differences. The experiments reported in the thesis were designed to examine multiple dimensions of reading skill, and to evaluate the effects of repeated experience in two groups of readers selected on the basis of their comprehension skill. The results indicated that difference between skilled and less-skilled readers were apparent on all measures of reading. Despite these overall group differences, the less-skilled readers were at least able to benefit from repeated experience as were their more skilled peers. The results in the first experiment indicated that the less-skilled readers were poorer at word-level processing, particularly in processing unfamiliar lexical items. The second experiment examined whether this poorer processing reflected an inability to benefit from experience over repeated trials. The results indicated that the performance of both skilled and less-skilled readers improved with repeated experience. Moreover, similar gains were observed after repetition with text in Experiment 3. The results of Experiment 4 further indicated that, although the less-skilled readers appears less sensitive to higher-order dimensions of text structure when reading for meaning, their performance across specific transfer conditions indicated that they were able to used higher order information to facilitate comprehension. The results of these experiments suggest that investigation of the role of repeated experience in contributing to individual difference may clarify factors critical to the acquisition of proficient reading skills. The implications of these findings for models of reading and for future research are discussed.</p> / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

What Makes a Successful College or University Programming Board?: Standards of Practice for Programming Boards

The purpose of this study was to seek an understanding of the characteristics of successful college and university programming boards (CUPBs). Specifically, I explored the organization and management; human, financial, and facility resource; campus and community relationship; program; mission; assessment and self-evaluation; and leadership characteristics of CUPBs. For purposes of this study, successful programming boards were defined and identified by professionals who work in this area of student affairs administration. To obtain the sample for this study, student affairs professionals who work with college and university programming boards and are members of the National Association of Campus Activities (NACA) were contacted. Members were asked to identify successful programming boards in their NACA region. Based on the programming boards identified through this process, the most successful programming boards for each of the seven NACA regions were identified. There were 22 total programming boards included in the study's sample. An Institutional Profile (IP) form was created with items that related to the research questions posed in this study. Document analysis was conducted on texts and reports obtained from advisors of the sample's programming boards. Additional information was obtained through interviews with these advisors. Responses that were qualitative in nature were analyzed and assigned to response categories. The data that were quantitative in nature were analyzed by calculating frequency and/or range and mean scores. The data revealed significant results for each of the seven characteristics explored in the study. The findings suggest ways to structure and staff CUPBs, how to select and train student leaders, how to manage human and financial resources, how to manage facilities, and the types and numbers of programs successful CUPBs sponsor. Recommendations about the mission of successful CUPBs were identified, as were ways to assess outcomes and advise the programming board. Collectively, the results describe the elements of successful CUPBs. These elements can be used to establish standards of practice for such boards and the staff who manage them. / Master of Arts

Pretende fazer um reconhecimento dos trabalhos de vários pesquisadores que procuram uma metodologia de apoio para a elaboração ou a avaliação de projetos dos espaços da habitação, onde as atividades dos seres humanos ? usuários da habitação ? são o principal ponto de referência. Dentro da premissa apresentada, pretende-se conhecer as implicações das atividades humanas nas decisões para as soluções espaciais adotadas para os ambientes da habitação. Pretende-se identificar os aspectos ergonômicos dos espaços destinados ao uso do homemcomo moradia, apontando os requisitos básicos para o desenvolvimento das atividades diárias dos usuários. A pesquisa se inicia associando os conceitos ergonômicos aos espaços da habitação, através de uma visão geral dos estudos que influenciaram o aprimoramento das técnicas de análise ergonômica para o espaço construído. Apresenta conceitos e requisitos para a análise das tarefas e investiga uma metodologia para identificar as atividades de um determinado grupo de usuários. Apresenta como parâmetros as soluções apontadas pelas pesquisas dos conceitos do Projeto Universal, e de estudos específicos para o usuário idoso. Para uma referência de aplicação dessa metodologia, esta pesquisa enfoca o usuário enfermo no espaço da habitação. Este processo consiste em elaborar uma caracterização ergonômica que parte do reconhecimento e da análise do usuário, das funções de uso e das atividades, dos ambientes e dos espaços funcionais da habitação, do uso de mobiliário e equipamentos necessários. / It starts from the premise of recognizing the works of various researchers who search for supporting methodology in order to elaborate or evaluate the projects of habitation spaces, where the activities of human beings - users of the space - are the main points of reference. From the presented premise, its intention is to recognize the implications of human activities in the decisions for the spacial solutions adopted for those spaces. It is also intended to identify the ergonomic aspects of the spaces destined to be used as housing, pointing the basic space requirements for the development of the daily activities of the users. The research starts by associating the ergonomic concepts to the living spaces, through a general point of view of studies which influenced the improvement of ergonomic analysis techniques for built spaces. It presents concepts and requirements for the analysis of the tasks and activities of the man and investigates a methodology to identify the activities of one definitive group of users. It presents as parameters the solutions pointed by the research on the concepts of the Universal Project and of specific studies for elderly users and, as an application\'s reference of this methodology, this research focuses on medical attendance (patient) in the living spaces of the habitation. This process consists in elaborating an ergonomic characterization which stems from the recognition and analysis of the user, of the functions of use and of the activities, the environments and functional spaces of the habitation and of the use of the furniture and necessary equipment.

Predicting Network Performance for Internet Activities Using a Web Browser

Internet measurements have previously been done mostly from research labs and universities. The number of home users is growing rapidly and we need a good way to measure their network performance. This thesis focuses on building a web application that allows users to check what their network is like for online activities they are interested in. The application has minimal impediment to use by only requiring a Web browser. A list of online activities we offer users to choose from includes browsing web site categories such as news or social networks, having voice and video conferences, playing online games and other activities.
