Processos metafônicos em adjetivos derivados em -osos(s) no português brasileiro e a dupla marcação de plural

Belando, Mariane Garin January 2017 (has links)
Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão, Programa de Pós-Graduação em Linguística, Florianópolis, 2017. / Made available in DSpace on 2018-01-23T03:18:54Z (GMT). / Abstract : This research presents a study on the double marking of plural in adjectives derived in -osos in Brazilian Portuguese, observing possible metaphonic behaviors. By metaphony proper, we share the definition of Cavacas (1920), which includes the alteration of tone of the tonic vowel induced by the postonic vowel. In this way, the characteristic timbre of the pluralized adjectives under study would be due to the analogy of the feminine forms, because the plural is a later form in the language. Based on Usage-Based Phonology (BYBEE, 2001) and on Exemplar Theory (PIERREHUMBERT, 2001), we performed a study to verify if the less frequent words would be more vulnerable to losing the plural overlap, causing the metaphonic process, due to the fact of the singular suffix tocorrespond to the most frequent pattern, according to the survey established in the "Brazilian Corpus" of the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo. Two production experiments were established, one with the adjective introduced in sentences-vehicles, and the otherwith the insertion of adjectives into real phrases. These adjectives were placed in different positions within the syntagma. Data from four female participants of the dialectal variety of the interior of São Paulo state are included in this study. The results of the experiments show that the canonical form (with a presence of the open vowel and the fricative relative to the plural morpheme -s, ie productions like [ozus]ou [ozs])), has been verified in 75.52% of the emissions analyzed. The forms that entice the metaphonic process, seen in the productions [ozus]e [ozs]), and that present a plural mark -s, were produced in 8.86% of the data. In 14.58% of the emissions, it was not possible to affirm that there was a double marking of plural, because, only from oitive, the quality of the tonic vowel, which should contain a mid-low vowel to mark thecanonical form, could not be defined. Also, depending on the control situation used in the data collection, there was a greater variability regarding the quality of this tonic vowel. In the sentences-vehicles, the metaphonic process was much more verified than in the real sentences. Were also identified, by analysis inserts, vowels with intermediate quality between low and high vowels, evidencing the gradient character in vowel production, important to Usage-Based studies. In this way, witnessed the target words produced with different timbres for the mid tonic vowel, evidencing the implicit phonetic knowledge that thespeakers have of their language, making use of such faculty. And, considering that each category would be represented in memory by a great cloud of correlated occurrences accommodated, the collected pronunciations show that there is also a great diversity of exemplars in the production. The results collected show that sound-changesphonetically motivated, such as a reduction of segment ???, as well as sound-changes without phonetic motivation, as the analogy to the most frequent type, arriving both infrequent and very frequent words. The variation observed was greater when we compared the contexts (control situations created for a data collection) in which target words were found. In the data investigated, it is noticed that the plurality is related to the mental representations, making the sentences are indeed redundant, since the vowel opening is another way of marking them.

Unlike other lexical categories such as nouns and verbs, which are, with very few contro-versial claims to the contrary, found in all languages, adjectives are quite problematic in the sense that while there are languages in which authors claim they are lacking (such as Central Alaskan Yup’ik), there are also language descriptions that identify not just one, but multiple adjective classes (in Japanese, for instance). Its syntactic properties also differ substantially across different languages, making it all the more difficult to devise a satisfactory explanation of what its properties are and what exactly it is. Having analysed the grammatical descriptions of sixty languages in a sample controlled for genetic affiliation and areal proximity, this func-tional typological survey has divided the different words labelled as adjective, or found in the attributive function when adjectives were not found, into distinct groups according to its mor-phosyntactic properties and sought correlations between them and the different properties of the languages, along with its relationship with nouns and verbs in the language. Among the results, the fact that only four of the languages analysed present more than one class of adjec-tives stands out: Cavineña (South America), Japanese (Eurasia), Manange (Southeast Asia and Oceania), and Mani (Africa). It is necessary to investigate further the properties of these languages in order to explain the isolation of this phenomenon in relation to the examined languages.

“Estamos muy grandes ya”. Adjetivos de edad con "ser" y "estar" en el español de México y Guatemala

Malaver, Irania 25 September 2017 (has links)
Palabras clave: sociolingüística – adjetivos de edad – cambio lingüístico – dialectología hispánica AbstractThis paper focuses on expressions of age combined with the verbs ser and estar in the Spanish of Guatemala and Mexico. It analyses the linguistic and extralinguistic factors favoring the extension of estar and the process of linguistic change involved in the expression of age in the two dialectal groups. Based on the analysis of three linguistic corpora from these communities (one from Ciudad de México and two from Guatemala), the results show, on the one hand, that estar is the most frequent copulative form, and, on the other, that some age-related adjectives favor the extension of the copulative form: chico, chiquito, grande. The paper concludes that age expressions with ser and estar are a feature of dialectal differentiation and, at the same time, an evolution ofestar at the expense of ser. Keywords: sociolinguistics – age adjectives – linguistic change – Hispanic dialectology

This study analyzes the prosody of the infant-directed speech to the Brazilian children. We investigated the presence of distinctive intonational features for the grammatical categories of name and adjectives that could highlight the position of the adjective in the complex DP. In Brazilian Portuguese, the position of the adjective is not rigid, and it can be placed, in several cases, before and after the name. Therefore, the acquisition of the adjectives could be a more complex task for the Brazilian children. The hypothesis of the Phonological Bootstrapping argues that phonological properties of the sentences could offer a set of reliable cues that could bootstrap the process of language acquisition. Recent studies indicate that the changes in the order of names and adjectives in a complex DP alter the prosody of those elements. Taking for granted that the infant-directed speech is altered on the prosodic level, we propose a prosodic analysis of the infant-directed speech to the Brazilian children in order to characterize the determinant phrase in regard to the position of the adjective: before and after the name.

Um estudo sobre os objetos cognatos e os adjetivos adverbiais no português do Brasil / A study about the cognate objects and adverbial adjectives in the Brazilian Portuguese

Leung, Renata Takllan Frauches 19 September 2007 (has links)
In this work, I analyze the phenomenon known as \"the adverbial use of adjective\" (or \"adverbial adjectives\"). Such phenomenon, common in Brazilian Portuguese (PB), occurs in sentences such as A Maria falou claro (cf. A Maria falou claramente) and raises a question about the categorial status of the modifier, since it presents adjective form, but behaves like an adverb. Some authors say that, in fact, they are adverbs: the adjectives undergo a morphological process called improper derivation or conversion, which consists of the \"shift of a word from a grammatical class to another\" (Basílio, 2006:60). Some other authors, such as Carnie (2000) and Negrão, Scher e Viotti (2003), suggest that adjectives and adverbs belong to an unique grammar category. One of the arguments used by the authors is the fact that adjectives and adverbs carry out the same role in sentence: they attribute properties to the items modified by them. These and other existing suggestions in literature have good arguments on their side. However, when we look at some language data, all these suggestions become unsatisfactory, since none of them can explain the following facts: in some contexts, both the adverbial and adjectival forms is possible (A Maria falou claro/claramente); in other contexts, only the adjectival form is possible (A Maria namora firme/*firmemente), and still in others contexts, only the adverbial form can appear in the sentence (Os soldados resistiram heroicamente/*heróico). Based on a generative model for grammar studies, it is necessary to investigate not only the categorial status of the lexical items in question, but also what there is in the subjacent structure of these sentences, that determines the context in which they can or cannot be used. In this work, I suggest that the adverbial adjectives are, in fact, adjectives, since they can modify either an implicit noun in the sentence, namely, the cognate object related to the verb, or, in Levinson (2006)\'s terms, an individual denoted by the same root as the verb\'s. In fact, the productivity contexts of these constructions with eventive cognate objects (Leung, 2006) are the same productivity contexts where one can find the adverbial adjectives. Besides, the behavior of the lexical items in question is not so adverbial as it looks: differenty from adverbs, they don\'t float in the sentence, but they are, obligatorily, adjacent to the verb. Another important factor is that, generally, they can\'t occur with a thematic object, what should be possible if these items were, in fact, adverbs.

The relevance of this research consists, besides emphasizing the use and employment of adjectives in the Death Notes, includes analysis of texts having representation and historical nature and the representatives of these writings for the Ukrainian immigrant descendants‟ community of Prudentópolis city and its region, in Paraná State. This research has theoretical contribution of Bechara (2009), Castillo (2010) and Neves (2011), among others, arguing over ante and postposition of adjective in the construction of noun phrases. The analysis on the relationship between the noun and the adjective position in being before or after to it was observed both in the Obituary announcing death news of priests and nuns. Over the nuns Death Notes is possible to identify the emphasis to postposition when described the biography of the deceased, which according to Castilho (2010), is represented as an order less marked in Portuguese. Ante position cases found in nuns Death Notes, mostly describes the works done to the church and the community. Regarding priests Death Notes adjectives appear before or after to the noun not considering his religious role or his actions as an ordinary person. Thus, it was possible to analyze the use of adjectives and how some DN are organized when describing familiar and religious facts associated and others that just mention religious aspects, i.e., the activity practiced (represented) by the deceased for the community.
